Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Dear Friends,It always feels peculiar writing this letter in early November to talk aboutChristmas – even though the shops are reminding us how many days thereare until 25 December!

When I was 11 years old, I was introduced to Charles Dickens’ book, AChristmas Carol. It tells the story of Scrooge and his tormenting spirits.Ebenezer Scrooge is a mean and intimidating character, who lives to makemoney, has a “thing” about time and very little else. He certainly has no usefor religion or sentimentality. The spirits who visit him disturb him greatly, pointing out all the things he has done wrong in his life. The last spirit takeshim into the future, where he sees a man who has died in his sleep and adiscussion going on as to whether this man should even have a funeralservice because no one would come to it. This dead man was Scrooge.Scrooge wakes up from these visions of the spirits and understands thatit’s now or never. Is it possible for him to mend his ways and alter hisdestiny? Scrooge realises that he’s been given a reprieve. He has anotheropportunity to be more human.

Many of us will recognise Scrooge’s struggles. He lived in a prison of hisown making, the doors sealed with a bitterness he wouldn’t let go. The goodnews is that we can learn from the past, changing now so that we can createa better future. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and loves usenough to help us to change.

If you are still making a Christmas list, think of some of these timeless giftsthat won’t cost you anything, except perhaps a little pride; mend a quarrel;release a grudge; apologise; forgive someone who has treated you wrongly;write an over-due thank you note; tell someone you love them; givesomething away.

At Christmas, we remember God’s gift to us of Jesus. Jesus came to us asa human being to enable us to become the human beings that God createdus to be. Focusing on Jesus rather than on ourselves will give us the sortof life that is worth living.

Happy Christmas!

With love and prayers,

Mother’s UnionOn Monday November 5thThe Wotton DeaneryMother’s Union met in theChurch Hall. We had a short, interestingtalk on the history of the Book of CommonPrayer which has a complicated historyand was developed over the Tudor Periodinto the book we all love today. It wasstarted by Archbishop Thomas Cranmerand was finalised in 1662 under James Iwho also authorised the King James Biblein English. Everyone enjoyed the tea weprovided and we all got to know each otherbetter. The raffle and a Bring and Buy saleraised over £120 for MU funds. On Monday November 12 at our Branchmeeting Mrs Eastwood spoke about theReformation and the troubled times overthe reigns’ of the Tudors. The country wentfrom catholic to protestant and back againand many people on both sides were burntat the stake. In Elizabeth’s reign thingsbegan to calm down. We also heard aboutthe position of clergy wives during thisperiod, which had sparked MrsEastwood’s original interest, being aclergy wife herself. Our next meeting will be the Christmaslunch on December 10th at 12.30 in thechurch centre. Tickets from Jenny Evans.

Prayer Help NeededThe Street Pastors go out as a team offour to care for and chat to those leavingthe pubs in the High Street in ChippingSodbury from 11.00pm to 2.30am eachSaturday. And yes, it would be good tohave more trained people from the localchurches to be joining them once a month, but this request is for more people to pray. Each Saturday 4 or 5 people have agreedto pray for the Pastors. It is fantastic whensome turn up to pray at our Hall throughuntil 2.30am. The team have mobiles andcan phone through with a request, if a fightbreaks out or there is a needy person intears, for example. It is also great if some come to pray at theHall from 10.30pm to 11.00pm. Are youever on your way home from a meal outor cinema trip at that time? The front Halldoor is open for that half hour. You’d beso welcome if you just popped in till theygo out onto the street. Parking is generallyeasy and there are very few people aboutby the Clock. The other way to support is being at homeand praying. All prayers are answered insome way. Please speak to one of theteam, or call Jenny and Peter Llewellynon 01454 318442. for more information.Thank You

NEW SCHOOL LOGO

St John’s MeadPrimary School

has made a new school logo, ashooting star.

On the star it has a cross andchildren.

This is what it means.

The cross on the star representsthat we are a Christian school;

The two children represent that weget along with each other

And

The star represents our honesty, friendship, respect and love to

others.

Courage, giving, equality andforgiveness are a few more of our

values. We chose the shooting starbecause it shows that our school is

aiming high.

Bishop John’s ChristmasLetterWhen our children were very young andmore recently with grandchildren thewrapping paper of Christmas presentssometimes appeared to be as exciting aswhatever was wrapped up inside. One yearthe church used a slogan “Christmasunwrapped” to encourage people to engagewith Christmas. In spite of hard financialtimes, for most Christmas will include goodfood, Christmas decorations, presents, timewith family and friends. But there is more. However exciting outer wrapping may be,once we take time to unwrap the gift inside, the gift at the heart of Christmas, there issomething to be even more excited about.Christmas is the great unwrapping of Godhimself. God chooses to come and live asone of us, a fully human life. We witness thevulnerability of a new born baby born inunhygienic surroundings. Early on there isan attempt on his life by a power-crazy localruler. Jesus and his parents become arefugee family in Egypt. Jesus is God’slove-gift to the world. He entered a worldwith plenty of confusion, insecurity, pain, suffering and violence. He was known asthe Prince of Peace. During his three yearsof ministry he constantly released God’s loveand healing power into broken, bruised anddamaged lives. The world hasn’t changedmuch. Jesus is still God’s love-gift to aneedy world, God’s love-gift to individualswho long for security, a deeper meaning andpurpose in life. We mustn’t mistake thewrapping for the gift. The gift needs to beunwrapped.I hope you may take time this Christmas tovisit a church near you, to enjoy the carols, hear afresh the Christmas message, putyourself in the way of God’s love unwrappedin the birth, life, death on a cross andresurrection of Jesus – there is no greatergift. A very happy Christmas to you all.The Bishop of Tewkesbury,Rt Revd John Went

Growing a Singing ChurchThe aim of the day was to help all churchmembers participate more fully in thesinging which enlivens our worship andbinds our community together. We began with tea, coffee and biscuits torefresh the body, then a morning prayerservice to refresh the spirit. The day was led by Ian Yemm whoexplained how we should breathe and whybreathing is the most important lesson ofthe day. After many different exercises weall began to lose our tenseness. We started with a psalm and continued

learningworkswhichwe couldsingbothtogetherand in around.Wedined inthe

church centre on four varieties of soup anda mind boggling selection of puddingsprovided by Dorothy Downing and ChristineStephens. In the afternoon we sang both in a circle inthe lady chapel and in the pews, it wasobvious how much better the sound waswhen we sat in circle and could hear oneanother’s voices rather than in the pewswhen only one or two other voices could beheard. The poor acoustics in the differentparts of the church were also ablydemonstrated by Graham Newman whoplayed both organ and Clavinova for the day.The day was rounded off by a short eveningprayer service where we sang some of themusic which we had learned during the day. Many thanks to Ian and Graham and thethirty odd choristers who attended whatturned out to be a Fantastic Day. Watch outfor the next group singing day!Bob and Sue Alcock

Bishop Michael’s visitFebruary 2013Bishop Michael will be visiting thisBenefice on Sunday 10 February andspending the whole of the followingweekend (15-17 February) with us all.On 10 February, he will be confirming(and possibly baptising) some (or all!) ofthe people who are currently on the Ex-ploring Christianity Course. This servicewill be at

9.30 am St John’s, Chipping Sodbury

10th February 2013.In between now and then, please remem-ber, in your prayers, the people who areattending this course. They are mostly intheir 20s and 30s, some who have beenmarried recently, or who will be marryingnext year and some are parents of thechildren who have been baptised recent-ly. Others are slightly older. So far, 13people have been coming to the course –and it’s really enjoyable and exciting! The following weekend is a unique eventfor us. Whilst Bishop Michael has beenour Diocesan Bishop, he has been con-ducting “teaching weekends” around thediocese. He has not done such a week-end in this Benefice so far, so it’s good tobe able to welcome him. One of the rolesof a Bishop is to be a teacher of the faithand Bishop Michael is indeed a bornteacher and it’s exciting that he will becoming to our Benefice next February. The theme will be on the Eucharist (HolyCommunion). Full details of this weekendhave yet to be worked out, but please dobook that weekend in your 2013 diary.JK

The Foodbank is 1 year old

I think our first year can be summed up asa full measure of blessings, tears andlaughter in equal parts. The blessings are almost too numerous tomention. In previous updates I havereported the significant items which havebeen financial, food, volunteer time andfacilities gifts. These have brought us tothe end of our first year without debt, adistribution operation at The Candle, astorage area, more than 5 tonnes of foodin stock and a volunteer pool of more than60 people. We have been astounded bythe generosity of local people andorganisations in all of these provisions. For example, there have been 27 localharvest festivals which have providedalmost 2 tonnes of food. (I must admit that50 kgs was out of date and the record wasset by a box of tea which went out of datein October 1991 – Happy 21st Birthday!!!)As you are aware, the food parcels wegive are only part of the service. This iswhere the measure of tears I mentionedin the opening lines comes in. While theparcels are prepared, we talk to the clientsto try to understand the circumstancesthey face and guide them to help. Thereare many tears during these chats – bothfrom the clients and from us.I close with a huge thank you to everyonewho has helped to support the schemethroughout the last year and hope that youwill continue to keep us in mind throughthe coming monthsRobert Vernon.
