So I love a good dive.

From my earliest bar-haunting days, I was happiest in the ones with the least amount of pretense and the highest number of neon beer signs. Throw in a dart board and some loud live music, and I was sold. But as I got older and replaced PBR with cabernet, I stopped spending so much time in those dives. It wasn’t necessarily an intentional evolution; it just kind of happened.

Then I met The Chalks.

You can’t spend time with Belva, Judelle and Judeen Chalk without getting in touch with your inner low-rent self. Whether you’re a teetotaler, an oenophile, or a person who suspects that anyone who uses the word “oenophile” is probably insufferably snooty, The Chalks will remind you of the best barbecue/frat party/bachelorette weekend/tailgating adventure you ever had. Because the common denominator in all those gatherings is a stone-cold determination not to take yourself or anyone around you altogether too seriously. And I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t truthfully like an opportunity to take their shoes off, their hair down, and the night off. And I definitely don’t know anyone who can put you in that frame of mind like The Chalks.

So welcome to Tubby’s-aka The Hertz-where the dive is jumping and The Chalks are singing. And I suspect they’d be singing even if they weren’t doing their court -ordered community service.

This story was going to be about the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the Chalky truth. But Judeen, Judelle and Belva Chalk never can agree on what the truth is. Who's the smart one? Judelle and Judeen both claim that title. The pretty one? Again, Judelle and Judeen jump up. Belva, well, she's more interested in alien abductions and taking care of the gentleman fans.

In reality (and hilarity), the Chalks are the living, breathing, country-singin' creations of New York-based performers Mary Brienza, Kathryn Markey and Leenya Rideout. They're actors, singers, songwriters and instrumentalists who've chalked up boatloads of credits in musical theater, sketch comedy, standup and improv. This alternate universe they're living in is the most fun they've ever had, they say.

Their characters — siblings Judeen, Judelle and Belva Chalk — were born some 19 years ago as one part of a sketch comedy show. They resonated with audiences and kept going. They've been playing music bars and comedy rooms ever since and, in 2010, moved into theaters with book shows. The first, The Chalks: An American Family in Three Chords, was workshopped and produced at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Holidays With the Chalks, their second book show, is brand-new for the Alliance Theatre. It's chock-full of Chalks favorites like "The Only Jew in Tulsa," "Wait Weight" (about the time Judelle got fat), "Prayer in Open G" and "Chalk It Up!" And it's their first in a genuine drinkin' theater.

The Chalks have a deep catalog of original music from which the numbers in the show are drawn. "It's the story line that's specific to the holidays," says Brienza. "The show is always happening in real time with the crowd that's attending that night. The audience is an essential element." Rideout's Belva sees Christmas as an important American holiday: "It's a time when Americans can show their patriotism by shopping a lot," she says.

They trio writes with one guiding principle: If it makes two Chalks laugh, it's in the show."It's been a very magical combination," Markey says. "We always have a lot of respect for each other. We're sane, talented and reliable. Solid citizens."

Until show time. Once the glitter and boots go on, all bets are off. They offer just one caveat: The more you drink, the better they'll sound.

Born 9 months apart and raised dirt poor in Boggy Depot, Oklahoma, Judeen, Judelle and Belva Chalk spent their childhood plucking on shoebox guitars, improvising bluegrass harmonies, and steering clear of their drunken daddy. They made their professional debut as the “Itty Bitty Chalk Girls” on the Christian Music Caravan. For J, J, & B, turning “professional” meant not only a first step into the big time, but that they could skip school and spend their days causing trouble. Before long, Burning Bush Records signed them to a recording contract, the “Itty Bitty” was dropped from their name, and THE CHALKS soon scored with “Nobody Loves Me 'Cept Jesus,” their first of many hits for that label.

During the Burning Bush years, Judelle and Belva got into their share of mischief and misdemeanors, but it was Judeen's infamous sado-masochistic affair with her minister of music that got The Chalks banned in perpetuity from Christian music. Still, there was one thing The Chalks knew for sure -- when the Lord closes a door, He always opens a window. So as soon as they could hot-wire a pick-up, they were off to Nashville -- a town where a past filled with shame, poverty and disgrace could only help one's career

opportunities. Before long they had turned lemons into lemonade when the incident-inspired song “Hog Wild & Hog Tied” (LP Straight Laced By Day, Black Lace By Night) put The Chalks on the Country Music map.

Along with the hits (the #1 albums, the videos, the line of signature wiglets) came some misses (the three-way fitness video, the trout-themed barbeque restaurant…) and personal problems were not far behind. Judelle celebrated their newfound success with several unfortunate pharmaceutical miscalculations, which led to a long term “mentorship” with former first lady Betty Ford. Belva continued to seek true love, and left no stone (or man or cowboy or trucker) unturned in her search. And Judeen kept the act together through steely determination, a phony credit card and the knife in her boot.

Even with a string of broken marriages, empty pill bottles and tour bus crashes, The Chalks continue to play country music for fans everywhere. They are especially happy to be back at Tubby's tonight to play for the good folks in Atlanta. And they'd be here even if it wasn't part of their court-ordered community service…Chalk it up!!!

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001. Over the past 11 seasons, she has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, created

CAROL HAMMOND (Costume Designer) joined the Alliance Theatre in 1981 and has worked as the Costume Shop Manager for 31 seasons. She has costumed more than 300 productions including, pre- Broadway shows (Last Night of Ballyhoo, Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act); national tours (Noise/Funk, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) world premieres, large-scale musicals, period and contemporary shows, and children’s shows. Her proudest professional moment

came when the Alliance was awarded the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Her thanks goes out to all designers and the costume shop personnel for making her career a long and successful one.

PETE SHINN (Lighting Designer) is the Master Electrician for the Alliance Theatre. His most recent designs have been The Wizard of Oz, Broke, Honk!, Disney's Mulan, Class of 3000 LIVE, Seussical: The Musical, Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and Glengarry Glen Ross at the Alliance; Blood Knot, Keeping Watch and A Christmas Memory for Theatrical Outfit. His previous designs have been with the Alliance Theatre (Alliance Stage and Hertz Stage), Actor’s Express, Horizon Theatre, Theatre in the Square, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, George Street Playhouse and Delaware Repertory Theatre.

CLAY BENNING (Sound Designer) has been the Resident Sound Designer at the Alliance Theatre for 13 years and has designed more than 75 productions. Recent works include Next to Normal, What I Learned in Paris, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Into the Woods, God of Carnage and The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls. Associate Artist at Georgia Shakespeare with more than 20 productions. Other designs include Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Theatrical Outfit, Synchronicity Theatre. Awards: 2006, 2007 and 2009 Suzi Bass awards for Outstanding Sound Design. He is a graduate of Presbyterian College (B.A.), North Carolina School of the Arts (M.F.A.) and a member of IATSE/USA829.

JEFF WAXMAN (Musical Supervisor) arranged and served as musical director for Woody Guthrie’s American Song, a folk country musical that had a wonderful production at the Alliance Theatre, directed by Susan Booth. The show and Jeff were nominated for Drama Desk Awards. He helped to create Almost Heaven, a musical revisitation of John Denver. Recently, Jeff participated as a musical consultant for a presentation of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County in New York, which had its world premiere at the Alliance Theatre last season. His

Broadway experience includes arrangement and musical direction of Doonesbury, Gorey Stories, Into the Light, and The Cherry Orchard. In New York, he produces music and runs a recording studio, he composes music for educational projects and has earned several major awards including an Emmy, a Grammy nomination, and several acknowledgements of his work in New York’s cabaret community including a Bistro Award and MAC award.

R. LAMAR WILLIAMS (Production Stage Manager) is an Atlanta native. Rodney studied theatre at Florida A&M University’s Essential Theatre. His 12-year tenure at the Alliance has included stage managing The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, Carapace, Sammy & Me, Tennis in Nablus, The Second Ciy: Peach Drop Stop & Roll, The Second City: Miracle on 1280 Peachtree Street and Broke; and assistant stage managing What I Learned in Paris, August Wilson Full Circle: Gem of the Ocean and Radio Golf; Doubt; Jelly’s Last Jam and the world premieres of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Women of Brewster Place, Sister Act: The Musical and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. JODY FELDMAN (Associate Producer) has been the head of casting for the Alliance Theatre since 1991. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYF productions for the Alliance including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David H. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug Hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has been privileged to cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as Casting Director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and worked as Atlanta Casting Director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in Washington, D.C., and

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as Atlanta has become a leading international city. in 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. in 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. in 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, the Jennings hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.

realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National graduate Playwriting Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers.

The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include gA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade; Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.
