Ti-Ahwaga Community Players Awarded Grant

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players

were recently awarded a $13,000 grant

from the Mildred Faulkner Truman

Foundation of Owego. The grant will be

used to replace the roof over the garage

and prop room of the Ti-Ahwaga

Performing Arts Center, located at 42

Delphine Street in Owego.

The theater group is grateful for the

Foundation's generous grant which

enables them to continue to produce live

theater for the benefit of Owego and the

surrounding communities.

Irene Graven, executive director of the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation, awards Alan Benninger, chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players, a check for $13,000 for roof repairs to the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center.

Tioga Downs Donates Turkeys Tioga Downs Casino donated fifty

frozen turkeys to Catholic Charities of

Broome County last month in an effort

to help them reach their overall goal of

3,500 turkeys for helping those in need

at Thanksgiving.

Tioga Downs became aware of an

urgent call for turkeys that Catholic

Charities needed to collect within a 48

hour time period. They quickly respond-

ed with their generous donation as part

of a greater community effort to fulfill

the needs of 2,200 local families and to

provide for other organizations putting

on Thanksgiving dinners throughout our

community.

According to Jeffrey Gural, Chief

Executive Officer for American Racing

and Entertainment, “We are very

pleased to support such a worthy cause

and help provide a Thanksgiving dinner

for needy families.”

Tioga Downs Casino is open year-

round with video gaming machines, sim-

ulcast horse racing, restaurants, a sports

bar and special entertainment events. It

is located along the north side of Route

17/ I-86, two miles west of exit 62 in

Nichols, NY.

Lucky Leprechaun Calendars Available The holidays are around the corner,

and an inexpensive gift that could bring

great returns is a St. Patrick School 2013

Lucky Leprechaun calendar.

For a $25 donation, and beginning

January 1, 2013, the calendar holder has

a chance to win 365 possible cash prizes

of $50 or $100 based on a daily, ran-

domly-generated, four-digit computer-

ized number. Each calendar is assigned a

number. If that number comes up, the

calendar holder wins $50. Win on a Sat-

urday and receive $100! Purchase the

calendar early, and be entered into an

early bird drawing for a chance to win

$100 before 2013 even begins. That

drawing is held December 15, 2012.

On Columbus Day 2013, the number

selected will win one lucky person

$1,000. In the event no one has that

number, a name will be randomly drawn

from all calendar holders.

This is the 20th year for this fundrais-

er which helps to offset the costs of edu-

cating the children of St. Patrick School.

The calendars are available by calling

the school at 687-1770, or by contacting

a school family.

“GLORY TO GOD” The labor room was a cow stall – the delivery room, the same;

The angels gazed in awe – and then the Savior came.

The angels now rejoiced and the star shone bright above;

The kings began their journey to adore God’s Gift Of Love.

The shepherds were amazed at that which they saw and heard –

Then they came and bowed before The Flesh that embodied The Word.

The young virgin smiled and wondered at all that was taking place;

Down deep in her heart she knew that the world was being visited by Grace.

The time was just right, we’re told, for all that happened back then;

And it looks quite plain to me that it’s time for His Coming Again.

Don’t look down or around – just up; keep your eyes on the eastern sky; I hear angels’ wings and battle drums – His Coming Again Is Nigh!

War and in the Civil War Section in

Historic Evergreen Cemetery. Gold Star

Mothers/Families and veterans from the

American Legion, VFW, Iraq/

Afghanistan and Vietnam Veterans of

America and Tioga County Marine

Corps League will participate.

The wreaths will honor in a very

special way those willing to sacrifice

that we might have freedom and our way

of life, remember so that their service

and sacrifice is never forgotten and

teach so that those who follow will

know and understand and make sure

past efforts were not in vain.

In Tioga and Bradford Counties, the

sixth year mission is to have church

congregations and civic organization

volunteer to place a wreath at the main

entrance to a cemetery of their choice.

Families of veterans are encouraged to

place a wreath at the headstone of their

veteran. Church pastors are encouraged

to mention the wreath laying program in

their service on Sunday December 9 or

15.

American Legion and VFW

members in Nichols, Waverly, Sayre,

Spencer Van Etten and Candor will hold

ceremonies at veterans memorials in

their communities.

It is surprising to see the number of

veterans who are buried in our local

cemeteries. It is worth one's time to

drive through, get out and walk through

the entire cemetery. There are veterans

of the Civil War, Union as well as

Confederate, The Spanish-American

War, World War I, World War II,

Korea, Vietnam and Iraq.

Remember Pearl Harbor Dec. 7

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is

Friday, December 7. Those who

remember December 7th first hand are

asked for their reflections.

Five from Tioga County were there

that Sunday morning. Owego and Tioga

County's first casualty is Seaman

Delmer D. Sibley still aboard the sunken

USS Arizona.

Four survived. Two are living - Bill

Kennedy of Owego and Richard

Hopkins of Berkshire - and two are

deceased - Army Cook Don Stocks of

Owego and Marine Buster Dunham of

Owego.

The American flag is flown at half

staff to honor those who died in the

attack on Pearl Harbor.

The first annual Deck the Hearth

Wreath Event, a fundraiser to benefit

Traci's Hope, will take place on Friday,

December 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, at

The Hearth at Castle Gardens, 1715 Cas-

tle Gardens Road in Vestal.

The Hearth at Castle Gardens donat-

ed over 60 wreaths to local businesses

and community members. They didn't

give them any guidelines or price limits.

They simply said "have fun"! The

wreaths range from classic traditional, to

contemporary, to pure whimsy.

The wreaths are displayed throughout

the Castle Gardens community which

welcomes you to come see them and bid

on them at the silent auction.

While you place your bids on your

favorite wreaths, you can enjoy the sea-

bar.

Silent auction winners will be sure to

walk away with some truly unique and

lovely wreaths, perfect for your own

home or to give as gifts.

All proceeds of the silent auction

McDonald's Re-Opens in Owego

The McDonald’s restaurant at

Hickories Park Road in Owego

celebrated its Grand Re-Opening at

11:00 am on Thursday, November

15, marking the completion of a full

rebuild.

Originally opened in 1976, the

restaurant recently completed

construction after damages from last

year’s flooding forced the restaurant

to close.

A variety of activities celebrated

the re-opening, including a contest

where every 10th car through the new

double drive-thru lanes won a $10.00

Arch Card gift card, culminating with

the 100th car winning $100 cash. A

live radio broadcast by WHWK took

place from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 pm to

join in on the celebration as well.

On December 8, there will be a

Family Day full of fun activities

including breakfast with Santa from

9:00 to 11:00 am, a live radio

broadcast with WMRV from 3:00 to

5:00 pm, craft time from 4:00 to 6:00

pm, and a meet and greet with the

one and only Ronald McDonald from

5:00 to 7:00 pm.

“This re-opening not only

represents a major reinvestment in

this store, but also in this community,

and this is our way of thanking all of

our customers for their past

patronage.” said Beth Dibble, who

owns and operates six McDonald’s

restaurants in the Southern Tier in

addition to Owego. “We greatly value

our customer’s patience and are very

excited about all of the improvements

to the store and how they will

enhance our customers’ overall

experience here.”

The new restaurant includes a

modern design with a fireplace and

TV that creates a sleek and

sophisticated dining experience. The

simple, neutral finishes allow the

sculptural and architectural pieces to

stand out among modern, clean lines.

The new double drive-thru lanes will

offer faster service and will be open

24 hours.

The Town of Owego Fire District

has received a generous donation by the

Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation.

The foundation has awarded $15,000 in

funding for the district to install a two-

way radio system that will help improve

communications capabilities for fire-

fighters and emergency medical re-

sponders.

The system will link the districts

two departments, and reduce radio trans-

missions over the county 911 system to

allow for increased and improved com-

munication between responders across

town, freeing up airwaves that are cur-

rently shared countywide. The system

will also provide more localized cover-

age, eliminating certain areas where cur-

rent radios are ineffective. The radio

system is currently in the design phase,

and is expected to be completed within a

year.

The Town of Owego Fire District is

responsible for fire protection serving

the southwest, and northeast quarters of

the Town of Owego. The fire district is

responsible for providing equipment,

administering the annual operating

budgets, determining fire district taxa-

tion rate, compliance with safety stand-

ards and governance of the district. The

district includes the Campville Fire De-

partment on Route 17C and the

Southside Fire Company on Waits Road

which provide the fire stations and vol-

unteer emergency responders to fulfill

the needs of the community.

The Mildred Faulkner Truman

Foundation's mission is to practice re-

sponsible stewardship of the charitable

trust of its benefactress, Mildred Faulk-

ner Truman, by providing worthwhile

grants to organizations that enhance and

benefit the residents of Tioga County,

New York. The Foundation wishes to

accomplish this mission by encouraging

grant requests for critical needs, capital

projects and seed money for new and

special projects or programs. It is the

Foundation's intent that through atten-

tion to such requests, the grants awarded

will address the community's challenges

and make a significant difference.

HOLIDAY MAGIC 2012 Saturday December 8th

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! One and all! Holiday Magic is returning to Newark Val-ley once again this December—Saturday, December 8, 2012, to be exact. The magic begins at 4:00pm and comes to a sad but satisfying end at 8:00pm. The jolly old man in white beard and red suit will land at the vil-lage green at 4:00. Children can visit with him—sugarplums dancing in their heads—at the gazebo until about 5:00. Right off the green, from the Rollie Noble Room beside the post office, holiday music will spill out into the fresh, crisp air, along with that distinc-tive aroma of gingerbread. Let that aroma, mixed with that of hot cocoa, coffee and popcorn, lure you in so you can indulge in Giblin’s Kids' Candy Shop (homemade candies offered by fifth graders at NVMS) or Cake Crea-tions (delicious homemade cakes) or Peppermint Perfection Pink Pigs (from Family and Consumer classes at NVMS). Newark Valley United Methodist Church will also offer homemade soup, bread and pies. Spend your time marveling at all the creatively designed gingerbread houses with a backdrop of holiday greenery and sparkling lights. New this year will be even larger cash prizes for gingerbread house entries judged on visual appeal, use of materials and originality in five categories: adult (16 and up), youth (11-15), youngster (10 and under), group/family and peo-ple’s choice (to be voted on during the festival). To enter please call JoAnn Byrne at 642-3906 or E-mail [email protected]. Entries will be accepted on Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the Noble Room. Before you head to the Depot, take your chance on an array of terrific raffle items/baskets including a free raffle for boy's bike and a girl's bike. The Depot, located off Whig Street, will be dressed to the nines with more than 20 decorated Christmas trees and 16 beautifully arrayed wreaths made up by local artists. The wreaths will be offered up for bid in a silent auction. A new addition this year for the young—and not so young alike—will be two model trains on a dioramic layout in the waiting room. Grassanova with Tom Quigley will serenade you with bluegrass-flavored holiday music throughout the evening. Of course it wouldn’t be the Depot without oodles of delectable food—pulled pork sandwiches, chili, sloppy joes, hot dogs with the works, and luscious desserts. Warm your tummy with hot chocolate or mulled cider. And Santa—you remember, that jolly old man with the big heart—will descend upon the Depot at 5:30 to add to his list all the Christmas wishes the wonder-eyed children have to offer. Children can also write letters to Santa and mail them in “Santa’s Mailbox.” While they wait for Santa’s arrival, there will be holiday crafts and cookie decorating—and of course, cookie eating. Horse and wagon rides will run between the village green and the depot throughout the evening. So don your warmest mittens and festive hat and come join in the holiday fun at Newark Valley’s seventh annual Holiday Magic Festival.

Happy Holidays

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players

will present Philip Grecian's adaptation

of Jean Shepherd's 'A Christmas Story'

for the eleventh year in a row on Decem-

ber 6, 8, 9, and December 14, 15, 16, at

the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center,

42 Delphine Street in Owego.

"'A Christmas Story' somehow draws

me in year after year," director Kathy

Harris said. "I thought I knew the show,

having played the mother four times.

But directing gives you a whole new

perspective. My challenge is to keep it

the same warm, wonderful play people

have grown to love, yet add enough of

my own tweaks and touches to make it

fresh and fun."

This classic, which is now a Christ-

mas tradition for many families in the

region, portrays the riotous trials and

travails of young Ralphie Parker on his

quest for the one thing he wants for

Christmas: a Red Ryder BB gun. His

requests for the gun keep getting re-

proved with a "you'll shoot your eye

out" by his parents and even his teacher

so he's not real sure he's going to get it.

On top of that, his skirmishes with his

brother and the school bully leave him

wondering if he'll ever make it to Christ-

mas at all.

The cast includes Jamie Cornell as

Ralph (the narrator), Doug Benish as the

Old Man, Heather Tinker as Mother,

Jonathan Langton as Ralphie, Dylan

Agan as Randy, Brendan Gillette as

Scut, Camden Dyer-DeCator as Flick,

Thad Robertson as Schwartz, Sierra

Agan as Esther Jane, Kennedy Dyer-

DeCator as Helen, and Meg Barker as

Miss Shields.

Shows start at 8:00 pm on Thursday,

Friday and Saturday, and at 2:00 pm on

Sunday. The Thursday show this year

prevents a conflict with Owego's 'Lights

on the River Festival.' General admis-

sion is $18 for adults and $10 for chil-

dren 12 and under. Friday admission for

students with ID cards is $10. Sunday

admission for seniors 60 and over is $15.

Fine wines and beers, in addition to

snacks, are available to enjoy at your

table during the show, and there isn't a

bad seat in the house.

The show is underwritten in part by

Keith A. Nichols MD, PLLC; D. Chris-

tian Aumock, D.D.S.; and Katie’s Krea-

tions. It's produced through special ar-

rangement with The Dramatic Publish-

ing Company of Woodstock, Ill. To re-

serve seats, call the Ti-Ahwaga Perform-

ing Arts Center at 687-2130 and log on

to www.tiahwaga.com for more infor-

mation about the theater.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor,

In a recent local newspaper there was

an article concerning the Owego Ele-

mentary school building project. One

statement that really stood out for me

was “having administrative offices at-

tached to the new school are instead now

leaning toward building a separate struc-

ture”. It has been stated that having a

separate building will not be covered by

the State. Meaning, if any repairs are

needed, the State will not cover them.

Of course we’ll hear there shouldn’t be

any repairs because it will be a new

building. But what about ‘down the

road’? Why should there be a burden

placed on future taxpayers if it can be

prevented today? I believe a few square

feet can be carved out of the new Ele-

mentary school to house the District

offices. Eliminate the Board room idea,

for the District office, and use a confer-

ence room. Eliminate the Auditorium

idea, for the elementary school, and use

the gym. If there is a dead line, like the

Superintendent keeps saying, why are

there any discussions concerning chang-

es? How large is this new school going

to be? What is the proposed square foot-

age? I can’t seem to find the answers on

the school’s website. It’s been men-

tioned that an additional cleaning person

will have to hired, so how many square

feet are we talking about?

Sincerely,

Candy Sweppenheiser

Castellucci's 16th Annual Blood Drive Town of Owego Supervisor Donald

Castellucci, Jr. will be sponsoring his

16th Annual Memorial Blood Drive in

honor of his parents, Donald and Grace

Castellucci, Sr. The drive will be held

from 1:30 to 6:30 pm on December 27 at

the Owego Elks Club. Appointments can

be made by calling 1-800-redcross or

visiting www.redcrossblood.org.

Each year since his father’s death on

December 25, 1997, Castellucci has

sponsored a blood drive in his memory.

In 2010, Castellucci lost his mother to

cancer as well, and added her memory to

the blood drive.

"During their illness, blood and plate-

lets were needed to extend their life,"

Castellucci explained. "We try to give

something back to help others. We have

recruited over 500 donors helping 1500

patients to date. We thank all who have

joined us in helping others."

As in the past, a rigatoni and meatball

dinner will be served to all donors. The

family also asks that a food item be

brought to be donated to Tioga County

Rural Ministry. Cash donations in the

Castelluccis’ memory are also accepted

and sent to the Rural Ministry as well.

"Many sponsors over the years have

made this event successful; Roma’s Bak-

ery, The Dugout Sports Bar, The Sports

Page, The Vestal Dollar Store, The Ale

House, Weis/Giant Markets and the

Owego Elks to name a few," Castelluci

said. "Of course the donors are what

make the event most successful.

"During the Christmas holiday we are

blessed with family get-togethers,

friends, and gifts. On December 27, we

all can give the most important gift of

the season: the gift of life! Thank you

for all of the past support and we hope to

see you on the 27th. May all of you have

a blessed Christmas and holiday season."

Homeowners Save Money and Energy State financing program can help lower utility bills As the winter months approach and

the weather grows colder, many

homeowners, especially those living in

drafty houses, begin feeling the pinch of

high home heating prices. Fortunately, a

new program from the New York State

Energy Research Development

Authority (NYSERDA) can help people

increase the energy efficiency of their

houses and save money on their utility

bills.

The Home Performance Energy

Efficiency Program offers free energy

assessments of homes by accredited

contractors. After the assessment, the

program helps homeowners through the

process of financing their home

improvements with grants (up to $5,000

that eligible homeowners do not have to

pay back), or low-interest loans.

“We can help people make their

homes cooler in the summer and warmer

in the winter, while saving money on

their utility bills,” said Euphemia

Martin, the program’s Regional

Outreach Coordinator for the Southern

Tier. “And people often find that their

health improves after an energy retrofit,

because ventilation problems, gas leaks,

mold and mildew are also taken care of

in the process.”

For more information or to sign up

for a free energy assessment, contact

Euphemia Martin at (607) 723-0110,

10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through

Friday, or email [email protected].

St. Patrick School has served students in Tioga and Broome counties for over 150 years. Our philosophy is that each child is an important member of God’s family. Our goal is to create a community that encourages each and every child to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically so that they will love and value themselves and other people. Our objective for each child is high academic achievement, positive self esteem, creation of a sense of responsibility towards others and reinforcement of the Christian and family values that are taught at home.

Vestal Writer Releases First Book Dave Elder, a Vestal writer and

a graduate from the class of 1969,

recently released his first book,

called "Expecting the Broken Brain

to Do Mental Pushups -- a Personal

Journey to Understanding Schizo-

phrenia and Depression."

The cover of the book features a

picture of Dave's mother Gerald-

ine, who was also a Vestal gradu-

ate, but from the class of 1942.

She taught him a lot about schizo-

phrenia, without meaning to do so,

and he accompanied her on more

than one trip to the New York State

Hospital in Binghamton while

growing up in Ross Corners.

Why a book about schizophre-

nia and depression? Dave feels that

taking the reader along on his jour-

ney to get to a basic understanding

of these mental issues could possi-

bly help others reach their own

point of understanding sooner than

they might otherwise, and that

someone who, like him, finds

themselves in the role of caregiver for a

family member or friend with these is-

sues, truly needs to get to that point of

understanding as soon as possible. The

caregiver's perspective also sets Dave's

story apart from the majority of books

on the subject, as most of the previous

writing related to this topic has come

from either the sufferers, such as Sylvia

Plath's The Bell Jar, or from the profes-

sional who treat them, such as Dr. Nan-

cy C. Andreasen's The Broken Brain.

Ideally, Dave would like his book to

play a role in demystifying these issues

for the general public because he be-

lieves our society as a whole will benefit

from a better overall understanding of

psychiatric problems and the people who

suffer from them.

You can find a copy at Books I

Should Have Read in Endicott and River

Read in Binghamton, and the book is

also available from Amazon.com in

print form and as a kindle download. To

find out more, visit MentalPushups.com.
