Salvation as powerful as it is surprising
Trapped! An enemy army behind them and the
sea before them. Where would this nation of
former slaves—men, women, children and
cattle—turn?
I suspect you know how the story continues: At
God’s direction Moses extended his staff and
the waters of the Red Sea parted. The people of
Israel made an impossible escape on dry land.
We worship a God of power and surprises.
Trapped! A world in darkness and sin. Behind
us the devil and his accusations and the guilt
that comes with them. Before us Judgment Day
when we will have to face our holy God. Where
to turn?
He’s still a God of powerful surprises. He
provides deliverance in the last place we’d
look—a young mother lays her newborn to rest
in a cattle shed in the little town of Bethlehem.
I suspect you know how the story continues.
The baby grows up. If we evaluated him by
earthly standards like wealth and social status
we’d say that he never went much farther than
the cattle shed. We know better. Powerful
words and deeds testify that he is more than
Mary’s son, but the Son of God himself.

The story continues with surprise after powerful
surprise: the people who should have embraced
him reject him. They twist his words of love
into the shape of a crime and have him
executed. Surprise! That was all part of God’s
plan since long before Bethlehem. Surprise! He
lives again, and still does.
We’re no longer trapped. Jesus sacrificial death
on the cross means that the devil can no longer
accuse us and guilt can no longer master us.
The final Judgment has been transformed into a
joyous welcome home party.
It’s a time of year for surprises, pilgrims. The
baby that adorns our Christmas decorations has
worked a powerful salvation for us all. In him
we have freedom to live free from guilt and
shame. We have freedom to forgive one another
and make our holiday gatherings a joy. We have
good news, and good news to share.
To us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Stewardship Verse of the Month
What other time of year do we think about giving as much as we do at Christmas? We give gifts to
mom, dad, the children, Aunt Sallie, Uncle Bob, Pastor, the Stewardship Chairman!!, and so many
others. Why this time of year? I think it is because of what happened so long ago on that most special
night that Luke talked about in his chapter two; Luke 2:1-7
"In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire
Roman world. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And
everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in
Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.
She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the
Inn."
Christians recognize the importance of this gift. We appreciate the love that God showed for all
of us by sending His son to do for us what we could not have done for ourselves. Somehow, we know
at this time of the year, we should show our love for all of the special people in our lives and we
generously give and give and give. But what we miss is that Jesus is not just a gift for the season. He
is a gift for all men for all seasons. How do we show our appreciation for what God did for us on that
special night, as well what God does for us each and every day? I submit that we try to return God's
love for us by practicing God-pleasing stewardship all year long. We manage the great gifts he gives to
us by serving others with our time, talents and treasures. May we at Pilgrim and others throughout
Christendom, always honor God with this service in all seasons.
A Blessed Christ-filled Christmas to All,
Barry Gostchock, Stewardship

―What Pilgrim Means to Me…‖
From the 5th and 6
th Grade Classroom at Pilgrim
Mikayla:
Pilgrim is like a second family and home. It teaches me that I can shine like a star. This school is the
best. For anyone who does not go here should be sad. I feel loved here. Just like I love all the teachers
and students. I will be sad at the end of 8th
grade.
Donavan:
I like Pilgrim because it teaches me about my life. It is a Christian school. If you do something bad,
people don’t bring you down. I love the teachers, the sports, and the academics. Pilgrim means a lot to
me. I like the teachers, the friends, and the classes. My favorite class is world history because of Mr.
Homan.
Maddie:
I think of Pilgrim as a loving, Christian school, even though some people can make mistakes. I have a
lot of friends here, and I love working on homework with them. School is fun. I love working on plays
with Mr. G, and the whole school! I especially love world history with Mr. Homan.
Travis:
Pilgrim is a nice place. It reminds me of my old school a lot. They teach Christianity here too. There
are lots of nice people that go to school here and nice teachers too.
Eboni:
What Pilgrim means to me is that I know I can come here and be myself. Pilgrim is a place where I can
learn and make friends, but most important is keeping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the center of
all we think, say, and do.
RaeLynne:
Pilgrim to me is a nice, loving school, and I love going here. This is the best year ever.
Elijah:
I love Pilgrim. It is awesome! My brother went here before me. It has all kinds of curriculum.
Elliott:
I like this school because it is big and nice.

―What Pilgrim Means to Me…‖
From the 5th and 6
th Grade Classroom at Pilgrim
Cyan:
Pilgrim means to me that I can be safe while worshipping my Lord and getting to learn things I didn’t
know before about the stories of the Bible. Pilgrim also means to me that I get to have an education and
get to learn while still making awesome and cool new Christian friends. Pilgrim also is a fun place to
be. I also think Pilgrim is and has taught me many new things I never knew. Also, I am learning new
things at a faster pace than I was at my old school. Pilgrim also has awesome sport teams where the
kids are nice and encouraging. They have good team spirit if you don’t get the volleyball over the net
or don’t make a basket they say ―good job.‖ Also, all the kids are nice and cool and they encourage you
in whatever you are doing as long as it’s a Christian action. That is what I think of Pilgrim School.
Aaron:
Pilgrim means a lot to me. My old school didn’t have sports. Pilgrim does. I play soccer and basketball.
My teachers have always been nice to me and my classmates even though it might not seem that way at
the time. I like Pilgrim.
Jakob:
I love Pilgrim. It’s the best school ever to me because it is fun, cool, and awesome. I’ve been at Pilgrim
since kindergarten. I’ve made lots of friends. Pilgrim ROCKS!
Ruby:
Pilgrim means a lot to me. I’ve been here before I could walk, and that’s why I feel close to Pilgrim.
Sometimes I have trouble with friends and homework, but it always turns out ok.
Jekylon:
Pilgrim is a good and cool school and fun. I have never been to a Christian school before, but I
believed in God for seven years. Our school theme is ―Shine Like Stars.‖ We should always shine like
stars always in the street or wherever we go….keep on shining!!!
Siaffah:
Pilgrim School is a loving place and safe environment. I have been here seven years. I have really
improved. So, I really like it here. It is cool.
Nina:
Pilgrim is a school where you learn great things. You get taught what you need to learn, and they teach
you right from wrong. They help you understand the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

FROM THE CHURCH BALCONY~
Some Anecdotes about...
George & His 'MESSIAH'
-George Frideric Handel was born in the same year as J.S. Bach in Germany 50 miles away but never met
Johann. His father was a barber-surgeon for the local Duke and his mother, the daughter of a pastor. The
Handels were good German Lutherans. His father wanted him to be a lawyer since being a musician was not
considered a credible career to embark upon. Handel's talent won the day! (HANDEL is pronounced "Handel"
not "Hondel"~)
George was a master musician playing all instruments and composing at first ITALIAN operas which were the
rage of the day.....living in Italy...and becoming world renown for opera. When he wrote music he did
it 'extremely fast' and to perfection! He was the 'rock star' of the era. Moved to LONDON where he lived the
rest of his life. Italian operas lost favor soon after since the English didn't understand Italian and thought
even less of Italy's "morals". As a result from the stress of his job in jeopardy he suffered a stroke but recovered
quickly developing a new style of music called the "oratorio" which is a "religious story set to music" with a
chorus and soloists but not staged with sets or costumes like an opera.
Handel was a music "free agent" and made ALOT of money for his music. He was beholden to no one which
was good although he also went bankrupt a number of times due to poor accounting and accountability:( Bach
on the other hand was a first rate genius who worked exclusively for the church
and poor of earthly goods but rich in talent. Mrs Bach was penniless when he died since his salary ceased.++
Messiah is called MESSIAH and not THE MESSIAH and was written later in his life. It was intended as a
THOUGHT PROVOKING work for EASTER and LENT, but became more of a Christmas time tradition.
There are THREE parts to Messiah:
1) Coming of Christ 2) The Passion 3) Affirmation of Christian faith and glimpses of Revelation. Billed as "A
Sacred Oratorio" it was first performed in Dublin, Ireland to a packed house....the gentlemen were asked NOT
to wear their swords and women NOT to wear skirt "hoops" so more people could get in. Half the audience
came more to see the soprano who was presently involved in a 'scandalous' divorce. The performances were a
SMASH! Messiah in the first 100+ years was always performed at Easter.
Handel was a confirmed bachelor. His morals were of the highest order. Messiah was written by Handel in
THREE weeks and he signed it "DSG" or Deo Soli Gloria---"to God be the glory". Charles Jennens, a rich
nobleman friend wrote the libretto(words)...much taken directly from the Bible. Messiah is widely agreed to be
the "most famous" music work in history and has never lost popularity.
His performances were performed in concert halls or theaters, not churches. George Washington was 9(in
Virginia) when Messiah was written. Handel by the way was tall, loud and wore a high white powdered wig. He
could be temperamental and quick tempered but then again he was a first rate genius of the highest order and
was in demand by royalty and the public. He was the most famous musician of the day and unlike Bach, never
fell into obscurity.
Most Messiah performances were performed for charity including in London for the "Needy and Decayed
Musicians Society"(that must've been an interesting group!) No one knows exactly why everyone stands during
the HALLELUJAH CHORUS; King George II never attended a performance.
George Frideric Handel eventually went blind at life's end. He personally conducted Messiah 13 times and died
eleven days after the 13th. He is buried at London's Westminister Abbey (3000 attended the funeral) ....the site
of many royale weddings then and now.

LOST AND FOUND
Lost and found items are in a basket by the tracts in the narthex (1st Avenue entrance) of the church.
Call the church office at 612-825-5375 to inquire about lost and found items.
Lock doors and turn off lights
Pilgrim Church highly encourages the use of our facilities by groups: Pioneers, Ladies Guild, Bible
Study, etc. We ask for each group, upon leaving, to verify all lights are turned off and doors are
shut tight. Doors need to be checked by pulling on them as they may not lock unless forced shut.
Numerous times staff members have arrived to find the doors not locked and lights left on. Not
checking the doors puts our property in danger of vandalism, theft and a host of other issues.
Leaving lights on causes additional funds to be sent to Xcel Energy that could have been used to
spread the Gospel.

Automated external defibrillators (aed)
We are in the process of ordering two AED units to have readily available for our Church building
and Stevens school building. AED stands for Automated External Defibrillators.
These simple-to-use units are based on computer technology which is designed to analyze the heart
rhythm and then advise the user whether a shock is required. They are designed to be used by lay
persons, or bystanders who require little or no training to operate them correctly.
It is fortunate that Pilgrim has not witnessed the need for an AED machine and hopefully we may
never need to utilize one for emergency heart failure. However, going forward, being prepared for
medical emergencies when they should arise will put us in a position to do all we can to help
someone in need, until first responders can arrive.
Survival rates of over 50% have been achieved where easily organized AED programs have been
established. Some of us may have personal experiences when the availability of an AED unit saved
someone where without one, would not have. Every responsible household has an easily accessible
fire extinguisher. In many ways, it is appropriate to think of an AED as a medical fire
extinguisher!
An Automated External Defibrillator unit is very affordable when considering saving a life. They
run about $1500 per unit. We are taking donations to defray the cost of these units. Please
consider participating and making an impact in this important cause. Thank you! Mike Denn

which has brought us three students. Joe is 17 years old and is a senior at West Lutheran High School. He
looks forward to continuing his college education in the U.S. Joe stays with the Pickett family who are
members of Cross of Christ. He is enjoying helping out with Sunday School and studying the Bible – both at
school and at church. Joe is a very positive, outgoing young man who embraces new experiences in the U.S.
Q: Why did you decide to do a foreign exchange program? A: I wanted to see a different education system and continue my college education in the U.S.
Q: What was your first impression of the U.S. and West Lutheran High School? A: It is a more relaxed atmosphere.
Q: What is the biggest adjustment you had to make when you came here? A: Everything is very different – the lifestyle, the food, the school system. I am still learning.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the U.S.? A: Too early to decide – I enjoy many things.
Q: What is your least favorite thing about the U.S.? A: In Minnesota: the climate.
Q: What do you miss the most from home? A: My family – but I am able to Skype and that helps.
Q: What is a major difference between your home country and the U.S.? A: Everything is so different – it is hard to name one major difference.
Q: What is a major difference between your home school and West Lutheran High School? A: We study so much more. Our school begins Sunday evening and ends Saturday afternoon. Classes go
from early morning into the evening. We break for meals only. There are not very many school holidays
either.
Q: What are you most looking forward to during you stay in the U.S.? A: I look forward to all new experiences and seeing new things – I want to try everything.
