patternsA grateful thank-you for your support

By Debbie Hamlett, Director of Development

“A treasured community resource.” That’s the common thread to the comments I’ve received since starting my position with Illinois Public Media and the WILL stations six months ago. I’ve learned about the many ways our organization serves you across central Illinois, and I am very grateful for your generosity. As one of 13,120 individual annual contributors or more than 431 businesses, you have chosen to help give a voice to the local arts, education, new ideas and innovation that we bring to your communities. This partnership is what allows us to bring you the best in television and radio programs, as well as outreach efforts that benefit central Illinois residents.

You’ve helped us showcase Champaign’s 150 years of history with an original series celebrating the community and its leaders, plus take a local look at Prohibition in our area and explore the stories along Route 150. We’re bringing you reports on the complex issues of feeding the hungry, along with the progress in breaking down barriers for those with disabilities. We’ve held open discussions on a variety of domestic and international issues brought forward in the films of our Community Cinema series. Together, we celebrated 30 years of insightful Focus programs, took an expanded regional approach to Mid-American Gardener and, with our partner organizations, made strides on the goals of C-U Fit Families.

We know you have choices in what you support, and all of us are thankful that you’ve placed your trust and your financial contributions with WILL. Some of you selected payroll deduction; others made an annual gift by credit card. Still other friends have provided for gifts in their estate plans or have discovered the benefits of funding a Charitable Gift Annuity. Some have donated vehicles. Whatever the method, your gift makes a very real difference in the quality of projects and programs we bring to you.

Now I ask you to consider making an additional gift before the year’s end and to ask a friend to join with you. You have our word that we will continue to be the best stewards of the funding you provide. On behalf of everyone at WILL, I send you our best wishes for a healthy, happy holiday season and bright, prosperous new year!

Get ready for the second season of

Downton Abbey

Many east central Illinois nursing homes rated below average

Numerous nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in east central Illinois are imperiling patients by failing to meet basic standards of care, according to reporting by CU-CitizenAccess.org.

Forty percent of the 74 facilities that serve more than 7,200 Medicare and Medicaid patients in east central Illinois have been repeatedly rated below average by inspectors.

On Monday, Dec. 5, CU-CitizenAccess.org will present Bed Check: The Condition of East Central Illinois Nursing Homes, a report on why so many homes are found wanting and what can be done about it. Listen to the report during Morning Edition and All Things Considered on WILL-AM 580 and FM 90.9 and online at will.illinois.edu. Then at 11 am on Tuesday, Dec. 6, join the conversation about nursing home quality and what can be done

to improve it. Your calls with questions and comments are welcome during an interactive Focus discussion on WILL-AM, with live video on will.illinois.edu.

CU-CitizenAccess.org reporters found that four of the seven nursing homes in Champaign County have been rated below average. The overall federal score is a combination of the ratings for health inspection, staffing and quality measures.

The CU-CitizenAccess.org nursing home reporting is based on the initial work of Sabrina Santucci, a former journalism student in University of Illinois journalism professor Brant Houston’s class, with

further reporting by Dan Petrella and Pam Dempsey. Houston is Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting. CU-CitizenAccess.org is a community online news and information project that is overseen by Houston and U of I journalism department chair Rich Martin.

Masterpiece Classic’s Downton Abbey, winner of six Emmy Awards, including the honor for outstanding miniseries or movie, is back for its second season beginning Sunday, Jan. 8, on WILL-TV.

Seven new episodes will continue the stories of the noble Crawley family and the staff who serve them in their Edwardian country house.

The cast—including Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Siobhan Finneran and many others—returns as the new season picks up in the middle of World War I.

WILL-TV will air the first two episodes of the first season beginning at 7 pm Sunday, Dec. 18, and the third episode at 8 pm Sunday, Dec. 25. If you missed it last season, this is an opportunity to see why The New York Times called the series “an instant classic.”

Get a preview of the second season, along with cast interviews, at www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/downtonabbey/.

Listen on Monday, Dec. 12, for her story about the school, which won a gold med-al for its anti-obesity efforts, becoming the first elementary school in the country to receive the award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation to reduce childhood obesity.

Lisa’s report will be the first in a periodic series of reports, most done by Illinois Public Media News reporter Sean Pow-ers, focused on health and wellness in central Illinois. Beginning this month, Sean will produce at least 11 feature sto-ries through June 2012, with additional online content. You can hear all of them on WILL Radio’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and online at will.illinois.edu.

At 11 am Tuesday, Dec. 13, Northeast Elementary principal Cheryl McIntire and educators from other schools join Focus host David Inge to talk about what schools are doing to combat obesity. Call in with questions and comments to join the discussion on WILL-AM, with live video on will.illinois.edu.

The health and wellness reporting is be-ing funded by a $20,000 grant from the

Lumpkin Foundation to Illinois Public Media for an anti-obesity community engagement and media messaging cam-paign.

Sean said that in his role as the station’s health and wellness reporter, he’s inter-ested in exploring some of the barriers that may prevent adults and children from being healthier. “Whether it’s obesi-ty, mental health or even a lack of public support for critical programs, it’s impor-tant for me to connect the community with the resources people can use to lead healthier lives,” he said.

As part of the initiative, Illinois Public Media has produced a public awareness video encouraging recipients of SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) to use their benefits at the Urbana farmers’ market. The video will be shown in a waiting room of the C-U Public Health District and other agencies. Additional videos are planned to promote SNAP use at other farmers’ markets.

Health and wellness reports begin this month

By Jack Brighton, Director of Innovation and New Media

Do you know how many important his-torical moments have been captured by WILL since its founding in 1922? Neither do we. Changes in staff, technology and focus over the decades have resulted in a fragmented collection of media archives spread over many locations with no mas-ter index. WILL produced many thou-sands of broadcasts documenting the 20th century and its people, events and stories. But like broadcasters everywhere, we don’t fully know what we’ve got.

A new $81,000 grant from the Corpora-tion for Public Broadcasting will enable us to fill that gap by creating a complete inventory of every media asset in our disparate collections. The American Ar-chive Content Inventory Project awarded Illinois Public Media funding for four full-time catalogers through early 2012. These catalogers are pouring through the thousands of analog and digital me-dia items stored in our tape library, hard drives, closets and desk drawers. We’re creating a master digital “card catalog” which will reveal the full extent and value

of WILL productions over decades. And it will help us secure funding in the next round of American Archive grants, when we hope to digitize, preserve and make accessible much of this content.

In the age of the Internet with access to just about everything, it’s easy to forget how much of our history remains locked up in older analog media formats like film and magnetic tape. Those formats are now reaching the end of their physi-cal lifespan, and the historical records they contain are in grave danger of be-ing lost forever. Meanwhile, born-digital media is like a fire hose of new content every day. In truth, it simply isn’t pos-sible to save everything forever. But if you don’t even know what you’ve got, you can’t make good decisions about preser-vation priorities.

Ultimately, this work will enable us to fully manage our media collections, pre-serve their value for the future and make these important stories and historical moments accessible to all citizens.

Be tax-savvy about year-end gifts

Gaining control of our history with the American Archive

Page 22: December 2011 Patterns

The film goes beyond the girls’ prison experience to show what their daily lives are like, offering a sobering but hopeful look at the struggles faced by the more than 1.5 million American children who have a parent behind bars.

A free screening of the film from Inde-pendent Lens and a discussion of the issues it raises will take place at 6 pm Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Robeson Rooms A & B of the Champaign Public Library (200 W. Green St.). Illinois Public Media and the library are partners in presenting the 10-film Community Cinema series for 2011-2012. The film will be shown with closed captions for the hearing impaired and an English sign language interpreter will sign the discussion.

That means great programs for our stations, plus a year-end tax deduction for you.

At Hilltop Prison in Gatesville, Texas, a unique Girl Scout troop unites daughters with mothers who are serving time for serious crimes, giving them a chance to rebuild their broken bonds. Facing long sentences from the courts, the mothers struggle to mend their fractured rela-tionships with their daughters.

Troop 1500 follows five young Girl Scouts—sisters Caitlin and Mikaela, Jas-mine, Jessica, and Naomi—whose moth-ers are serving time. Once inside the prison, the girls of Troop 1500 fall into the arms of the mothers they seldom see—Kenya, Melissa, Ida, and Susan—crying and laughing while pulling out report cards and pictures and passing along hellos from grandparents and ab-sent brothers.
