Universal transfer gripper GANGLOFF-SCOMA has been supplying for many years already full neck transfer technology for the PET bottles on its monoblocs for still water.

This neck handling technology allows fre-quent and easy changes in bottles sizes, without any equipment changeover.

Such versatility of the equipment is beco-ming increasingly important in the wine filling sector as well. More and more wine bottlers want their equipment to fill se-veral formats and sizes of bottles, PET or glass-made, without having to stop or slow-down their production.

In order to meet this versatility requirement, GANGLOFF-SCOMA has developed two key compo-nents now equipping its mono-blocs for wines and liquors.

The first one is the universal constant level nozzle (see article below) which can fill all types of PET or glass bottles, regardless of their formats and sizes.

The second component is a universal transferring gripper capable of han-dling PET and glass bottles of various sizes and shapes, empty or filled.

This universal gripper consists of a stainless steel, heavy-duty gripper cove-red by a specific rubber skin, which holds smoothly but firmly the bottle. The posi-tion and size of the gripping contact onto the bottle is assuring a smooth transfer of all conventional bottles for wines and li-quors, PET or glass-based.

GANGLOFF-SCOMA has introduced this universal transfer gripper at SI-MEI and SITEVI tradeshows in Italy and France by end November 2011.

Trial runs with your bottle designs are pos-sible on our demo fillers in our workshop in Lyon, France.

Simple is better !GANGLOFF-SCOMA has a long history in wines & liquors filling units, with many French and European top brands operating its filling monoblocs (see on page 4).

Based on this strong expertise and aware of the new requirements from the wines & liquors markets, GANGLOFF-SCOMA is introducing a new generation of constant-level filling nozzle.

The main characteristics of this new filling nozzle for wines and liquors are:

• Simplicity: no contact between the bottle and the nozzle; no moving / sliding compo-nents inside the of nozzle (no joint, no membrane); no return circuit of air or liquid into the product tank.

• Efficiency: the bottom filling upward and the adjustment of the filling speed (high and low speeds) allow a “gentle”, foamless yet fast filling of even the most delicate liquids. Bottle deareation and nitrogen feeding before and after filling are features readily incor-porated into the nozzle design.

• Flexibility: the automatic height adjustment of the bottle lifters combined to a unique multi-format level sensor allowing the control of three independent levels make it pos-sible to operate short production runs with different bottle formats and sizes, without any equipment changeover. This universal constant level sensor equally works with glass or PET bottles.

GANGLOFF-SCOMA has introduced this new generation filling nozzle at SIMEI and SITEVI tradeshows in Italy and France by end November 2011. Figure 1: universal transfer gripper, for glass or PET bottles. The gripper holds most conventional shapes and sizes of bottles and guarantees a smooth transfer of empty or full bottles along the filling monobloc. No transfer screws are required.

Figure 1: bottom filling upward. Initiating the filling right from the bottom of the bottle upward allows a smooth and foamless filling of the liquid, with no degradation of the liquid. The filling speed can be adjusted in 2 modes (high-speed and low-speed), hence further optimizing the filling performance and its adequacy to the liquid.

Figure 2: nitrogen feeding before filling and before capping: the GANGLOFF-SCOMA filling nozzle for wines and liquors incorporates a bottle deareation system. Just before the filling, an inert gas is injected in the bottle from the bottom upward forcing a natural exhaust of the air via the neck of the bottle. A similar gas feeding occurs after the bottle is filled to its targeted constant level, feeding the bottle’s neck with inert gas, before the transfer to the capper.

Figure 3: automatic changes of bottle formats: no equipment changeover is required when filling different formats of bottles. The constant level nozzle features a multi-format sensor able of controlling up to 3 different levels. At the same time, the bottle lifters are adjustable in height (by the PLC), hence allowing a universal adjustment of the filling level to nearly all conventional bottle sizes and formats.

Universal level sensor: the same filling nozzle can control 3 different levels of filling.

Manufacturing capabilities : All our monoblocs are designed in-house and manufactured within a 50 km radius from our main assembling workshop in Lyon, France. The assem-bling and dry-testing of our equipment is performed in our workshop by a team ave-raging 15 years of per head experience in the beverage bottling industry.

Full neck handling at 66,000 BPH !Entering the area of high production speeds in excess of 40,000 BPH leads to several challenges in production efficiency.

One of these challenges is to guarantee a trouble-free transfer by the neck of both the empty and full bottles.

PET bottles are getting lighter and ligh-ter in weight while production speeds are increasing.

As a result, the ability to transfer the bottles by the neck within the monobloc has become critical. GANGLOFF-SCOMA has a long experience in monoblocs ope-rating in excess of 40,000 BPH. It has developed a proven and reliable neck transfer clipper currently operating on several GANGLOFF-SCOMA monoblocs running over 60,000 BPH.

This clipper was designed to transfer ultra-light PET bottles featuring a very tight neck area, hence with a very narrow gripping surface at the neck.

Furthermore, the limited body rigidity of such ultra-light bottles makes them prone to twist or torsion at high rotation speeds.

The solution developed by GAN-GLOFF-SCOMA is a life-lubrica-ted gripper with an heavy-duty closing/opening mechanism that firmly hold the empty or full bottles along the monobloc.

The gripping area at the neck being very narrow, the perfect alignment of all the transfer wheels within the monobloc is a must.

The mechanism of the closing/opening sys-tem does not create any visible scratches on the neck. No specific maintenance is required and many grippers on several monoblocs are operating trouble-free at high speed for seve-ral years already.

For high output filling units over 20,000 BPH, our flowmeter filling nozzle fea-tures a heavy-duty double-valve actuator allowing a very accurate control of the filling volume (filling accuracy < 0.2%). This actuator enables two adjustable filling speeds for optimum filling versa-tility and it is suitable for hot fill. The lifetime of the valves is exceeding 7 million cycles. The position of the valves as well as the inner shape of the

nozzle head maintain the flow laminar down to the neck of the bottle.

For lower output filling units, GAN-GLOFF-SCOMA is providing a flowmeter filling nozzle incorporating a tubular closing valve instead of the double-valve actuator. This special tubular valve combines superior mechanical per-formances with nearly no mainte-nance requirements.

Flowmeter technologies !Back in the early 2000s, GANGLOFF-SCOMA was one of the first suppliers of monoblocs to incorporate the flowmeter filling technology for non-car-bonated drinks. Today, we offer several flowmeter solutions each adapted to specific filling requirements.

Sanitation in Bottling !Our monoblocs are built on a heavy-duty full stainless steel frame (40 mm thick) designed for a long-life and vibration-free operation even at high production speeds in excess of 60,000 BPH.

The horizontal frame will host the seve-ral turrets (rinser, filler, capper) and the transfer wheels. The upper section (the filling side) is integrally separated from the lower driving section (by belt driven or brushless).

A 6 mm thick stainless steel sloped skin is entirely covering the frame, with a shape designed to avoid any retention of liquid. The welding technology used to link this inclined skin to the rest of the monobloc is critical in order to eliminate any dead points. The shape, angles and orientation of this sloped table are customized to fit the requirements of each of our custo-mers.

Adjustable spraying nozzles located along the monobloc ensure an in-depth and uni-form sanitation of the filling side of the monobloc.

For specific applications, the sloped table receives a liquid repellant coating to fur-ther improve the sanitation performance.

Performances by GANGLOFF-SCOMA !Several of our recent monoblocs (for still water) operating in the USA and in Europe are reaching the above mentioned performances. Efficiency and accuracy even at high output (over 60,000 BPH) are achieved through a massive & robust mechanical engineering combi-ned with the use of high-end precision components.
