Dear Friends, It was the spring of 2002 when I first launched Healthy Living Magazine. As scary as it was to approach my first couple of advertisers (now my friends) I dug deep within myself and fought through all the negative beliefs

and self doubts. I stuck with it, made some mistakes along the way, but I can honestly say that I am doing what I love. And now realize I am doing my life’s work! I have been blessed tremendously and I have experienced such growth and healing along the way. Not to mention the opportunity to work with such great healers like Dr. Bernie Siegel, Dr. Joan Borysenko, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Andrew Weil, Mark Mincolla and now, Alberto Villoldo. As we approach our 10th anniversary this September 2012, I think back about the wonderful resource that I created, built up from the foundation, planting seeds along the way while watching them grow. What an accomplishment. I am so proud to continually strive to provide an arena for the interchange of ideas and experiences, by which I hope to inform, nurture, and inspire each and everyone’s health and well being. Well, I’m proud to share with you the next phase of growth: Healthy Living Magazine Goes Virtual! Each month my readers will find valuable resource on health & fitness information, tips, tools, expert advice and support. We hope that HL MAG becomes your go-to guide to a healthy life style. Available right at your finger tips, we have implemented an easy to use interface that allows our readers to search for a service or practitioner and link directly from the magazine to a practitioners’ website. Check it out on-line today and subscribe to receive our monthly e-Magazine at www.myhealthylivingmagazine.com So, do what you feel, despite your fears and doubts; the end result is always something spectacular. Feel the fear and do it anyway, as they say. Let your heart make up your mind and wonderful things happen. I may not be financially rich, but I am rich with wonderful friends, personal growth opportunities, being at home with my children and helping people on the road to better heath and wellness. When you have enough nothing is lacking. Special thanks to my dear family and to Virginia Just . . . for putting up with my late nights . . . and helping me stay true to my vision.

Many Worlds Interpretation (MWI) - Quantum Mechanics is a revolutionary area of research which began in the early 20th century when scientists began to unfold the theories of electromagnetism and Newtonian physics. The father of Quantum Mechanics, Niels Bohr drastically altered the traditional scientific view of ‘reality’ by mathematically establishing the probability that there is an infinite number of ‘potential universes’ (multi-verse) representing an infinite number of possibilities that exist simultaneously. In 1957, quantum theorists further added that in MWI everything that can happen will happen in at least one universe, and ultimately overlap into a ‘multi-verse’ with an infinite number of outcomes.

Thus, quantum mechanics has posited that there are an infinite number of possibilities for reality in infinite existence. Quantum theory also reminds us that each reality requires the conscious intention of an observer. Each observer then has a choice as to which reality they wish to focus on.

Quantum Positive Thinking Exercise:

1. Clear the path – Retreat in quietude and look deep inside at all the things that block the pathway to your highest reality. Clear out all the subconscious, mental and emotional distractions between you and your highest reality. Strive to keep your focus and attention clear. Remember, attention empowers intention. Pledge to always keep a clear

pathway wide open to your highest reality!

Affirmation: “Deep within me there is always a clear, open path to my highest reality!”

2. Power up - Practice transmitting your beam of intention stronger and further than ever before. Before you begin each and every day visualize yourself sending out a powerful, positive attractor beam outward in every direction to the ends of the universe, knowing that it will reach every highest destination, returning only the manifestation of your highest reality!

Affirmation: “From deep within me a beam of intention toward my highest reality grows ever stronger.”

3. Go get your reality - With MWI theory in mind, visualize that the universe is like a ‘reality’ department store with endless departments and endless merchandise options from which to choose. Whatever reality you are waiting to enjoy is always waiting for you to pick it out. Your job is to know exactly what you want and to focus your intention on it like a child on the way to a toy store. Stop waiting for something that already exists!

Affirmation: “I joyfully choose my highest reality.”

• As a counselor and professional who works with children, adolescents and adults, Nancy Partridge (OToole) specializes in loss and life transitions. Her private practice is built around her training in Spiritual Psychology and Energy Medicine.

• Spiritual Psychology and Energy Medicine are approaches that work not only with the psyche, but with the body and the soul to shift the patterns of behavior that keep one stuck in unconscious limiting beliefs, fears, addictive habits, and anxiety or distress.

• This approach facilitates people’s healing by helping them to identify with a core self, apart from the personality and dis-identify with their wound stories. Developing a relationship to this

core aspect of self is essential to the shift from victim to self-empowerment.

• In her workshops, Nancy is passionate about teaching others the ways of energy medicine, meditation, creating sacred space through ritual, and shifting consciousness as a way of learning to care for one’s own Soul. • Nancy brings a lifetime of personal and spiritual growth to this process, and inspires in others ways to create and honor sacred moments in every day life. To this end, she shares astute insights with her clients and brings a talent for helping others transcend their woundedness and reconnect to their passion for life.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) guideline recommendations are 2-3 days of strength training to muscle fatigue/failure and at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular training most days of the week. I believe you can alter your life by altering your attitude. Food is the fuel your body needs to function and capability to exercise to the level needed to make the change in your body composition, increase lung capacity and build strength. The stronger your muscles are, the faster your metabolism runs. If your not eating healthy, your body will not be able to do the workload necessary to improve your level of fitness. Pushing your body to fatigue or failure is the key. You need to cause micro-trauma tears in the muscle fibers, they repair/recover and when that scientific process is complete, the muscle becomes stronger. If one is not eating a healthy diet, you do not have the energy/fuel to exercise to the point where it counts! One who skips meals and then eats for three in one meal . . . blood sugar levels are all

over the place, which causes cravings and results in consuming too much food and the wrong food. You know what to do. . .you have heard it before! Eating every two to three hours small meals which keeps your sugar levels consistent and keeps the “starving” sensation at bay and reduces cravings for carbs, sugary and fatty fried foods. Hydration plays an imperative role in fitness performance. Drink your water! As a fitness professional when training with clients, I know their limits and push them beyond their limits, with concentration on proper weight loads, form and technique. One component people don't seem to realize or just not want to engage in is the “progression component”, which keeps you increasing your level of fitness not just maintaining. As your body becomes stronger, the exercises/training needs to be more intense, more challenging in order to progress your level of fitness.

WORKS: Quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus (comprehensive thigh)

ExECuTION: Place the ball against the wall. Facing away from the wall, place your body against the ball at around mid-back level. Stand with feet planted firmly a little further than shoulder-width apart with toes facing directly forward. The knees are directly aligned with the toes and should track on the exercise between the first and second toe for optimal and safe knee alignment. Draw your navel to

your spine, maintain normal breathing, keep your chest high and face straight ahead. upon achieving this position, simply lower your hips to

the floor to a comfortable range of motion (no more than 90 degrees at the knee) and return to original position. Repeat for desired amount of reps.

POINTS: Plant feet firmly, particularly the back half of the feet. Descend slowly as to maximize each repetition.

Benefits of Massage!Set those endorphins free!

Endorphins are much talked about these days. They’re basically chemicals released in the brain. They are actually natural painkillers, and when released, they make us feel good over all. Other specific effects of endorphins are changes in appetite, a feeling of euphoria, and even the release of sex hormones. The bottom line is that endorphins are good for us!

So what do endorphins have to do with massages? The fact is that whenever you get a massage, the pressure exerted on the skin triggers your nervous system. In

turn, this stimulates the release of endorphins in the brain. No wonder you feel much better after a massage!

This is a gentle pose designed to stimulate and invigorate the mind and body. The Tree Pose also helps to strengthen and bring balance into one's life.

The physical body responds with tuning towards balanced hormones, a soothed nervous

system and a sense of lightness and blissfulness, and receives an incredible hip opener and leg strengthener.

The mind releasing anxiousness and worry benefits with techniques that teach us

how to work towards inner quiet and focusedness.

To begin . . . rest sole of foot on inner shin or above knee on inner thigh. Work to press knee out to the side. Lift out of waist and take arms into a wide V to represent the branches of

the tree.

Work anywhere from 2-5 breaths to 2-3 minutes each side.

Please Don’t Spank Your ChildLike many of my generation, I remember being spanked as a child. What was particularly unfair was that the home of my childhood was an upside down house, in that the living space was on the second floor and my bedroom was on the first floor. So when my naughtiness factor overtaxed my mother’s patience, she would yell, tell me to go to my room, and then swat my behind as I started going down the stairs. There was no way to obey the go-to-the-room command without getting spanked.

Sometime between my childhood and the time I became a mom, the attitude about spanking changed. Time-outs were in, and hitting was way out. I can guess that most of us have slipped a time or two (I can actually only remember spanking one of my kids once and I still feel awful about it. I apologize to her every time the topic comes up but she thinks I am being ridiculous since she was three at the time and has no memory of the event. But I remember it all too well and feel really guilty). But new research supports the notion that spanking is just not an option when it comes to disciplining your child(ren).

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against spanking, and notes that children who were spanked are more likely to “become adults who are depressed,

use alcohol, have more anger, hit their own children, hit their spouses, and engage in crime and violence”. And new research from

the university of New Hampshire showed that children who were spanked during the four years of the study had lower IQ points than children who were not spanked.

To be honest, one has to be careful when interpreting data from observational studies like these. The gold standard of research is to do a randomized controlled trial. But in this case, that would mean taking a group of children, telling half the parents to use spanking and the other half never to spank, and then follow the children to

see how they do. This would obviously not be ethical or desirable in any way. So we have to rely on observational studies, and there could be some limitations on how you interpret the data. It could be that women with lower IQ’s, who are more likely to have children with lower IQ’s, tend to spank more. It could be that children with lower IQ’s act out more, thus aggravating their parents more and increasing the likelihood of spanking. Any of these possibilities exist, which made me cringe when the lead author of the uNH study was quoted as saying, “All parents want smart children. This research shows that avoiding spanking and correcting misbehavior in other ways can

by Alice D. Domar, Ph.D.

Page 16: DECEMBER 2011

14 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue December 2011

help that happen.” None of the research hasshown that in fact, avoiding spanking makessmarter kids. The research simply shows thatthe children of parents who avoid spankinghave slightly higher IQ points than the childrenof parents who spank.

But there is no advantage whatsoever ofspanking. And as someone who was trained asa child psychologist, I can tell you that if youwant to change a child’s behavior, punishingthem for bad behavior is not nearly as effectiveas is rewarding them for good behavior. Soif you see your five-year-old sneaking up onthe cookie jar a half hour before dinner, youhave two choices. You can either smack themafter they take the cookie and hope that thiswill keep them from doing it the next time(it won’t), or you can tell them that if theycarefully climb off the counter without takingthe cookie, you will give them two cookiesafter dinner.

These are exciting times –Sometimes we need a guide on the journey.

Cinnamon twig, or Gui Zhi, is a common herb you may have in your kitchen right now - and also a powerhouse of a medicinal herb in Chinese Herbal Medicine. Gui Zhi warms the meridians and disperses cold, so is excellent for achy joint pain that responds well to heat.

Because of its warming function, it can be very useful for treating cold-type menstrual cramps (sharp and stabbing cramps that are better with the application of a heating pad). Gui Zhi also has a function of unblocking qi in the chest, so can be used for mild chest pain or a feeling of

your heart fluttering in your chest.

Gui Zhi also harmonizes the interior and exterior levels of the body. This means that we use it clinically to treat cold symptoms in someone who has an underlying weakness...for example, an

elderly person, a postpartum woman, or someone who suffers from a chronic illness.

Anxiety in Pets

. . . flower remedies are used

to improve the

attitude, personality,

and mood of the patient . . .

23 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue December 2011

One of the more common behavior problems for which I am consulted involves anxiety-related issues in dogs and cats. The problems range from simply being anxious when going to the doctor’s office or grooming shop, and thunderstorm phobias, all the way to severe separation anxiety. While behavior modification is very important in dealing with any type of anxiety and phobia (and should not be replaced by medications or supplements,) there are situations where various natural therapies may be helpful in dealing with these issues. While conventional tranquilizers such as acepromazine can immobilize pets, these drugs do not relieve the terrible anxiety the poor pets experience. Therefore, they really should not be used as the sole therapy for anxiety disorders in dogs and cats. This article will briefly review some of the more commonly recommended supplements for dealing with anxiety in pets.

Flower essences are alcohol extracts of various plants. Flower therapy was developed by Dr. Edward Bach during the 1930's. Dr. Bach was a conventionally trained physician who studied immunology and was involved in the development of a number of vaccines. However, he desired to find a less invasive way

of treating patients that would have the same favorable results as he saw with conventional medicine.

During his studies he learned about homeopathy and was attracted to Dr. Hahnemann's philosophy of treating the individual patient. As a result Dr. Bach began preparing homeopathic preparations of the vaccines he had created.

During this time Dr. Bach began to notice that people could be grouped based upon their emotional states. For example, he noticed that some individuals seemed lonely, some were distracted, some were fearful, and some were more outgoing. Dr. Bach further noticed that people that fell into these groupings responded best to the same type of homeopathic vaccine. By matching the homeopathic vaccine with a person's emotional "grouping," Dr. Bach achieved even better results in his patients.

Dr. Bach then began searching for harmless plant-derived materials for his vaccines (rather than relying on the bacterial products used at the time to prepare the vaccines.) He desired to find plants that would have a healing effect on what he thought were the negative emotions that were at the root of many diseases he saw

Catnip is a well known

herb used for its calming properties.

in his patients. This would allow him not just to heal the immediate illness but also heal the root cause of the disorder. By freeing the body from its negative emotional states, the body would be free to heal itself.

The system Dr. Bach discovered during his research led to the creation of the flower essences. The flower essences (flower therapy) are extracts of flowers; each essence addresses a specific trait of mind or personality type. These flower remedies are used to improve the attitude, personality, and mood of the patient, which Dr. Bach felt was the key to many disorders seen in his patients. According to Dr. Bach, “Health is our heritage . . . and is the complete and full union between the soul, mind, and body. True healing can be obtained by right replacing wrong, good replacing evil, and light replacing dark.” Dr. Bach felt that the action of the remedies was to open the patient to healing from within by replacing bad virtue (fear) with good virtue (calm.) Since mental and emotional state can determine health or disease, the flower remedies are used to achieve harmony in the patient. According to practitioners of flower essence therapy, harmonious patients are healthier as harmony precludes disease.

Rescue Remedy is the best known essence and produces a calming in many nervous pets. It is composed of the essences of 5 flowers: cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose and Star of Bethlehem.

While I prefer combination products instead of simply choosing 1 or 2 herbs for anxiety, it’s important to understand which herbs may be indicated for anxiety-related problems.

Valerian is an herb that promotes restfulness, and has not been reported to interact negatively with other medications commonly used in pets. The active ingredients in valerian bind to the same receptors in the brain as the drug diazepam. Kava is a well known anti-anxiety herb. The active

ingredients cause mild sedation, relief from anxiety, and muscle relaxation. While safe in pets, there have been a few reports of liver failure in people with preexisting severe liver disorders. In my practice, I have not seen any problems but would exercise caution in pets with liver problems. Catnip is a well known herb used for its calming properties. In some cats, it can cause excitement (similar to a mild “high” seen in some people using illegal drugs.) However, when combined with the other herbs in this formula, its sedative and calming properties predominate. Finally, L-tryptophan, being a precursor to serotonin, reduces aggression and anxiety.

Finally, keep in mind that your pet can pick up on your own stress level. Whenever I remove a pet from its owner during the examination, and bring it to our treatment area to perform a procedure, I notice that most pets calm down since they are not sensing the stress the owner also experiences during the visit. And don’t forget the importance of a strong immune system. using antioxidants, feeding the pet a

healthy natural diet, and reducing the amount of vaccines given, can relieve extra stress on the pet’s immune system.

Each pet is different, and there is no cookie-cutter approach that works on every case. For owners interested in avoiding conventional medications (which are usually expensive and often have the potential for undesirable side effects,) I encourage readers to consider these safe natural options before resorting to stronger conventional medications. Make sure to work with your veterinarian before using herbs, as even these natural “medicines” can have side effects in certain pets.

What are some ways to calm an anxious person with dementia? All behavior is meaningful, expressing what the person cannot express in words. Look beyond the words spoken and the behavior; they most likely are expressing feeling lost, insecure or frustrated.

It is important to understand what causes people with dementia to be anxious. They are afraid of anything new or unexpected; frustrated when they are not understood; frustrated and perhaps ashamed trying something that is too difficult and failing or being scolded or rushed by a tired, irritated care partner! They may simply need things slowed down or need reassurance that they are valued and safe.

Calming an

Anxious Person

with Dementia

by Beverly L. Moore, RN, CS

• Get and maintain eye contact, speak slowly, reassure.• Take a breath; slow your pace to match theirs.• Apologize for rushing or scolding. Apology does wonders to calm a person with dementia.• Stop what you are doing that is causing the anxiety. Start again with a new approach; one that will promote success and create a positive atmosphere.

My family member is very anxious and fretful whenever I drive her home after dark. She flails her hands and cries, “Where are we going?” “I don’t want to go!”, “Take me home!” My response is NOT to answer her questions, but to ask her if she feels safe with me. I take her hand and simply say, “You are always safe with me.” I often hold and stroke her hand all the way home. Home is a place of safety and comfort. We can create a safe feeling by our behavior.

Beverly Moore of StillMee has developed a blog site to give families a forum for telling their stories and connecting with others caring for some with Alzheimer's or related dementia. Click here to visit Beverly's blog site.http://stilmeecoach.blogspot.com

Children benefit from an active lifestyle and participating in any sport. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that partaking in organized sports provides a chance for young people to increase their activity and develop socially and physically.

Gym.Net adds that gymnastics is one of the most comprehensive lifestyle exercise programs available to children, incorporating strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power, and discipline. Whether they are involved in recreational gymnastics or with a competition squad, skills learned in gymnastics can benefit a child's overall development.

General HealthParticipation in gymnastics helps children become physically active, and stay fit and healthy. Taking part in any exercise significantly reduces the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes in adulthood. As of 2010, one in three children in the united States was overweight, and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports states that "encouraging moderate and vigorous physical activity among youth is important," as the habits learned as a child are

often carried through to adulthood. Regular participation in gymnastics can teach children how to live a healthy lifestyle, and remain involved in the sport as they grow up.

Social BenefitsPartaking in gymnastics can help children sleep better, and equip them with skills to better handle physical and emotional challenges in life. Attending a regular gymnastics class provides young children with the opportunity to communicate with people their own age, work within a team, and engage with adults. The Gymnastics Academy of Boston also believes that gymnastics gives children an opportunity to learn about social skills like listening, following directions, taking turns, being quiet, and respecting others. Children also have fun, meet new friends, and learn independence.

Commitment and DisciplineThe challenging nature of gymnastics requires commitment and concentration. The structure

of gymnastics lessons teaches children how hard work and dedication pays off. Positive experiences in gymnastics can build confidence through achievement, and illustrates to children that commitment to sport benefits them. Rules and codes of conduct in gymnastics help children learn the importance of rules for safety, and teach respect toward others.Motor Skills, Coordination and BalanceGymnastics helps children build a range of motor and coordination skills, and assists in developing a good sense of body awareness. A young gymnast will learn how to use different parts of her body in difference ways. English Gymnastics claims that participation in gymnastics develops body awareness, control, and coordination, which can be beneficial to other physical activities, sports, and in everyday life.

StrengthGymnasts are renowned for their excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Taking part in gymnastics at a young age can help build the foundations of good all-around muscle strength, endurance, and power. According to the International Gymnastics School, gymnasts get stronger through regular training, which aids in the development of lean, toned muscles, improved balance, and better posture.

At Tumblefun Gymnastics we strive to individualize each child's TumbleFun experience according to age, learning ability, and skill sets, so goals can be met and, hopefully, expectations exceeded. It is important for children to develop self-confidence, an enthusiasm for physical fitness and good social skills. We find most children are natural participants.

Surprise Gifts by Andrea S. Cohen M.Ed., CFPC

of the Season During this season of holidays, gift giving, and end of year celebrations, we draw on a great deal of our resources focusing on the central people in our lives. We spend time visiting friends, money buying gifts, and energy fulfilling the countless commitments we have agreed to take part in. Many of us, regardless of religious affiliation, subscribe to the idea that this time of year represents benevolence and generosity. We aim enthusiastically to create an atmosphere of peace and goodwill; well, at least we do our best to generate feelings of kindness. Digging a little deeper, however, an interested person can see that something fundamental is missing. When we spend all (or even most) of our valuable energy outside of ourselves, we diminish our ability to invoke

our own vigorous health and

wellness.

This tendency is commonly embodied through our relationship with food.

What does this mean? One of the deep seated precepts of mind body nutrition challenges the notion of immediately fixing or curing symptoms. Many of us accept the notion that when something is awry in our bodies, we should immediately ease or better yet eradicate the condition. For years I disregarded my own acid reflux diagnosis with the unsympathetic belief that my body would figure it out. I knew that I was bogged down with anxiety but I refused to take the time to make a connection between my stress level and my digestion. I eventually came to a realization, after years of developing my gut wisdom that yoga helped heal my digestion

more than any chalky tablets or pink liquid ever could.

If we sacrifice our own needs based on a cultural notion of endless giving with very little receiving, we can miss crucial signals that our bodies are urgently communicating. Call them

signs, symptoms, or clues; they are magnificent gifts, but only when we have the compassion and courage to receive them.

Certainly this is a very different kind of gift than

those advertised on television or haggled for on online auctions. This is not a new Kevlar coated phone

or a robot vacuum to clean your home, but

it is gift, genuine and given freely. When we

33 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue December 2011

take the time to listen, understand, and act on our body’s wisdom, we find answers that lead us to love our relationship with food and create lasting health and vital energy.

There exists throughout our diverse traditions an implied responsibility to socialize with food and drink along with a pressure to use foodstuff to show love and loyalty. This dynamic generates an impulse to disregard our own innate knowledge and give in to the perceived needs of others. This pressure is visible any time someone says, “But I made your favorite brownies!” and we eat them, not because we feel hungry but because we feel guilty. Eating out of obligation is a far cry from loving your relationship with food. When we discount any internal sensations of conflict we degrade the value of our brilliant instinct.

Whether it is a vague sense, an evident pain, or something in between, receiving these gifts from our bodies will assist us to create a balanced relationship with food as well as light the path toward optimal health. When you honor your gut wisdom and make decisions based on that insight, you honor the voice of your body. These surprise gifts are just waiting to be unwrapped!

Andrea S. Cohen’s passionate and dedicated food journey began over twenty years ago while reading the bestselling 1971 book, Diet for a Small Planet. While learning about the global food industry, she became aware that food was so much greater than just calories, taste, or even family tradition. As she began to comprehend the social, political, and economic significance of food production and distribution, Andrea felt compelled to make vast changes in her life that continue to resonate deep into her personal and professional life today.

Karen Paolino Correia turns 50!Over the years I really haven't focused on my age and quite often someone would ask me, "How old are you?" and I would have to stop and think, "How old am I?". This week is a major milestone birthday, 50 years old.

My last milestone birthday at the age of forty, I was getting separated and it was the most challenging time of my life. I was confused, sad and I have to say it was a "midlife" or you can say a major life crisis. Now, its 10 years later and I am living in love, abundance, fulfillment and I feel grateful and blessed for every aspect of my life.

I believe this transformation happened when I decided over 10 years ago to be courageous and to live my authentic life. To be true to who I really am and to stop trying to be the person I thought I was suppose to be and what I perceived everyone wanted me to be. I can't say this rebirth into my authentic self was easy but as I look back and I reflect on who I am now and what my life feels like, it was all worth it and I have no regrets. My affirmations as I step gracefully into my 50's and the next half of my life is "I am fabulous at fifty and beyond!" I choose to live my life to its fullest and to live in gratitude and appreciation. I look forward to living in love with my husband, my children, my

family, my friends, clients, students and all those I connect with. I choose to experience a deeper connection and oneness with the

divine and to be of service for the highest and greatest good of all. I am living and sharing my authentic divine magnificence and it continues to bring me great love, freedom, joy, happiness, fulfillment and miracles. I am open and willing to experience all of this and more, better than I could ever imagine. And so it is!

I encourage you to bless every birthday as an opportunity to be authentic and to choose to live your life to its fullest. I have always said, birthdays bring an opportunity for re-birth. Choose to create from your divine magnificence and decide who you are going to be and what you desire to experience in every aspect of your life.

With blessings, love and gratitude to all of you for being who you are!

Holidays, as wonderful and magical as they may be, can also be filled with high expectations, anxiety and intense emotions, feelings of being overwhelmed, overscheduled and time crunched, with too much food and drink! All of these factors can create a recipe that may compromise your health.

How can we enjoy the holidays this season and also wake up in January feeling healthy and energized? The good news is we can change what hasn’t worked for us in the past and have a new experience this year!

Perhaps we can take a lesson from successful business people during a busy holiday season. Positive business leaders learn to maintain their cool under pressure, remain courteous and be of high quality service, all of which can result in great rewards.

How do we accomplish such a positive mind-set and behaviors?

A successful holiday season DOES require extra energy and conscious effort. This is true for business people, employees, organizations, families, and individuals alike. There is a need for all of us to literally pause, breathe, reflect and plan ahead.

It is vital to focus on what is really important to us, what we personally wish to experience in the holiday season.

And we need to have coping strategies ready-to-go, to take care of body, mind, spirit and emotions.

The following suggestions can help you have a less stressful, more enjoyable holiday season:

Set an intention to really enjoy the season this year and envision what you want.

Rehearse your intention or vision statement often.

Be realistic about what you really need to spend, and indulge in, to have a good holiday.

Make “game plans” to navigate busy days.

Allow time to plan and prepare for events.

Choose to eat healthy food 90% of the time.

Limit sugar and fats, and processed foods. But don’t deny yourself a treat that is special to you.

Include plenty of green vegetables every day.

Enjoy a warm beverage. According to Yale university researchers—warm hands are linked to warm hearts by way of the Insula in the brain—which helps process both physical temperature and emotions.

Try some cleansing dandelion tea or milk thistle tea if you have had too much holiday cheer.

Foods that detox include: broccoli, cabbage, beets, artichoke, brussel sprouts, leeks, kale, onion, garlic, and fruits high in vitamin C.

Stay physically active. Mild exercise like a brisk daily walk (or a yoga class) can help you de-stress, improve circulation, and stimulate

the immune system. If you live in a snow belt area: try sledding, skiing or ice skating and enjoy the fresh air. Wear a helmet as necessary. ––NOTE: High intensity work-outs elevate your metabolism and allow you to burn more calories around the clock 24 -48 hours after you’ve done the work-out.––

Make time for relaxation, reflection, meditation, “quiet time.” Just 20 minutes each day can have powerful effects.

GET ENOuGH SLEEP! Sleeping (soundly) 7.5 hours a night for 3 straight nights guarantees you’ll get through at least 5 full sleep cycles per night---which will make you feel more rested, plus bolster immunity. If you are traveling and taking prescription medications, you will need to have your medications with you, and not pack them away. All prescriptions should be clearly labeled. Make a list with your name, name of each medication and its purpose, and check in advance if you will need a physician’s letter to accompany your possession of medication.

Pick a day and make it an “errand-free day.”Watch your favorite show or movie. Or read a good book.

Give some time, money, energy, or blood to someone. Research suggests that the act of giving may release natural opiates, such as endorphins, into our system. Acts of giving stimulate the “mesolimbic pathway in the brain,” by which natural dopamine is released, leaving us feeling euphoric. This is referred to as “helper’s high.”

Switch things around a day– Mix things up. Eat breakfast for dinner, take an alternative route, try a new exercise class.

If you have a hot tub, take advantage and “chill out” there a few minutes!

Make a point to PAuSE and BREATHE. Do this at work, or home, while driving in crazy traffic.

Drink plenty of water, 6-8 8 oz. glasses per day. Stay well hydrated.

Limit alcohol to 3-5 servings per week. 1 serving = 5 oz. wine, a 12 oz. beer or 1.5 oz. (1 jigger) of alcohol. Drink 8 oz. of water for each alcoholic beverage.

Try inhaling the scent of peppermint under your nose every 2 hours. Researchers have found that it can reduce hunger levels and cravings.

When faced with multiple demands and invitations, be choosy about which events you’ll attend. Stay only as long as it feels good to you.

Find something beautiful to observe every day – for example holiday lights, wreaths and their fragrant scent, the bright colors of wrapping paper and ribbons.

Star-gaze! “Concentrating is very meditative” (says Alice Domar, PhD—Boston Psychologist). “And you really have to focus to see things in the sky . . . The Milky Way doesn’t have a sign on it.”

Plan in fun, creative events . . . whatever that is for you.

Attend a free concert or a special dance performance.

Sing like no one is listening! Sing in a caroling group, or sing alone while decorating the house!

Start a new family tradition that incorporates a sense of magic or reverence.

Be kind to yourself and others. Be courteous in stressful, crowded situations.

Buy fresh flowers if you don’t have allergies.

Seek professional help if you find you can’t shake holiday blues or depression.

Maintain a sense of gratitude, despite possible stressors and challenges.

Grin, laugh, and smile frequently even if you have to fake it . . . and most importantly enjoy the holiday season.

Remember that the holiday season is really about Love and connectedness. Be safe and choose your indulgences wisely!

Getting news and information into our NEW online E-Mag often requires writing a press release.

Here are some tips for doing that well :

Provide the basics:Every press release should answer the Five W’s – Who, What, When, Where and Why.

Be specific:For events, tell exactly what is planned and who is invited. For announcements, tell what happened and when, to whom and why it is important.

Be complete:Don’t forget to include the time, date, place and directions, and cost, if applicable. Try to include everything the reader needs to know.

Be concise:If possible, keep the press release to 100 words. If we need more information - we will call you.

Be factual:Provide information, but don’t embellish or offer opinions.

Be timely:To publicize an event, send the press release to us before the 1st of the month for our deadline on the 15th at least two weeks in advance. For an announcement or similar type of news, send the press release when the news has just happened, not weeks or months later.

I’m sure you have questions. All schools claim to be the best but what is the reality? The only way to know is to visit the schools, talk to the students (a must) and also talk to employers

if you can. These are

the people who really understand the quality of the programs. As for me, I have loved this field for over 35 years. There is nothing like the feeling of helping people to feel and look better. As a profession that allows flexibility to raise children or follow additional interests, it supports life long learning and a

deep sense of satisfaction. And if you are good, it provides prosperity that’s in harmony with who you are. I personally invite you to visit the school to learn more. I look forward to meeting you.

Our graduates say it best:“I want you to know that everywhere I have interviewed, the Spa Tech diploma makes all the difference – to the point where people have said they won’t consider anyone from certain local schools. Feel free to use this email as a testimony. You guys are the best! Even at State Boards you know exactly who was from Spa Tech because they were completely prepared.” ~ Jessica (Class of 2006)

You deserve an education that honors who you are and who you are becoming. A great education is spiritually transforming: you overcome your limitations and realize your highest potential, at the same time you learn the foundation and skills to succeed. The next step to fulfilling your future is to call for a no obligation, information interview with our Career Advisor at 800-262-8530. We look forward to meeting you and learning about your future.
