    ScienceStudentsDiscoverWhatWouldHappenIf...?ByChadElwell,ScienceDepartmentChair

    InfreshmanPhysicalSciencethisyear,Ihave

    been tryinganew teachingmethod: forour

    first semester focuson chemistry, Idecided

to present the topics by having students

    study (andmemorize) the first20 elements

    ontheperiodic table. (Forthosewhodont

    havea sciencebackground, theperiodic ta

    ble isachartshowingthebuildingblocksof

    matterinorderoftheircomplexity.)

    Thus,we startedwithhydrogenand itsone

    proton,andhavebeenproceedingmostly in

    order

    as

    we

    examine

    other

    elements.

    One

    of

    themostexcitingonessofarissodiummetal

(natrium). Youcant find it innature, but it

    canbeproduced

    in the lab, and

    wehavesomeat

    school. When

    you put sodium

    metal in water,

    it reacts vio

    lently and starts

    producing burn

    inghydrogengas

    (right).

Another thing Iencourage students todo is

    toask,Whatwouldhappenif...?thats

    one

    of

    the

    fundamental

    questions

    of

    science.

So when a student recently asked, What

would happen if sodium reacted with an

egg?we tried it. Result: it bubbled and

    fizzed,andtheeggcooked(atinybit).

    Another time,when discussingwhat hap

pens to gum in your stomach,we placed

    somepartiallychewedguminhydrochloric

acid, along with several other types of

    food,tosimulatestomachconditions. The

results: about eightweeks later, the gum

    andfoodisstillbreakingdown. Whydoes

    ntittakethatlonginyourstomach?

Encourage your students to keep asking

questions in science (and in their other

    classes).
