Sir Knight of the Month

The District Master, Richie Head has requested that each Navigator’s regularly select their Sir Knight of the Month.

It is my pleasure to select the Potomac Assembly’s Commander and District Associate Marshal Richard “Dick” Bowman as our Knight of the Month. Dick has been an Outstanding Com-mander of the Potomac Assembly! He recently coordinated our Color Corps participation at: Christopher Columbus Memorial at Union Station; Memorial Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church; the Veterans Day Mass at St. Louis Catholic Church; the Mt. Vernon Council Memorial Mass for Departed Knights as well coordinating the pancake breakfast at St. Louis School Hall

and conducting certification of another Color Corps in Woodbridge. Dick is a mentor and a role model for many of our Sir Knights. Dick and his wife, Lois, are proud parents of five children and eight grandchildren.

Dick Bowman is a native of Chicago, IL. He enlisted in the U.S. 1944 and graduated from West Point in 1949. He served as a pilot instructor and was a B-26 Flight Com-mander in the Korean War, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was on the ini-tial staff of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and later served as an Associate Professor of Political Science (PhD, Harvard). He and his family moved to Northern Virginia in 1963, when he was assigned to USAF Office of Plans and Opera-tions in the Pentagon. He represented the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, on the Se-curity Council Staff (64-66), served as Military Advisor to the US Ambassador to NATO (73-75), and then as Director, European and NATO Affairs, Office of the Secretary of Defense (75-81). He retired in 1981 with the rank of Major General. During his career, he was awarded three Distinguished Service Medals.

Dick joined the Mount Vernon Council # 5998 in 1994 and served as Grand Knight from (96-97). He subsequently served as Faithful Navigator of Potomac Assembly # 2204 from (97-98). He has served as Commander of the Assembly's Color Corps since 1997 and as As-sociate Marshal (Arlington Diocese) since 2002. In addition, he has led the Roundtable at Saint Louis Catholic Church since 1997. In that capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of school's new middle school building. Dick headed the Building Committee which, among other tasks, hired an architect and shepherded various building permits through the county. In addition, he led major renovations to the original school building, including the construction of a new library, music room, two dressing rooms for gym classes, a computer lab, and a teacher's lounge. Congratulations Dick! May God Bless You and Your Family!

SYMBOLS OF THE FOURTH DEGREE

The Cape and Chapeaux: We presented a colorfully lined black cape and a black headpiece decorated with white plumes. These are the cape and chapeaux of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Colum-bus. The Sir Knights are privileged to wear these items when participating as members of a formal guard of honor at civic and religious functions.

The cape and chapeaux each bear the symbol of the Fourth Degree. A white dove of peace, symbol of the Holy Spirit, descends, with outstretched wings over the blue sphere of our world, which was created by God the Father, against the blood red background of the Cross of Christ Jesus, the Son of God.

Thus, the colors red, white and blue have both a patriotic and a religious significance for the members of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

The Sword: The sword was presented as one of the emblems of the Fourth Degree. Although used by the Knights in the Middle Ages as a weapon in defense of their faith, the Knights of today use it as a token of honor to others, to form a canopy over honored participants in a religious procession. When the sword is held with the blade down, it takes the form of the Cross of Christ.

The Chalice: The Chalice presented at the offertory was symbolic of the Sacred Vessel presented by living members of the Fourth Degree in memory of a deceased Sir Knight at the time of his death.

The Flag of the United States of America: The flag of our country, which is the source of the colors of Red, White and Blue, are symbolic of our Patriotic Degree dedicated to love of country, love of our Church, and love of family.

The Rose: The rose is symbolic of our Order's support and involvement with the Rite of the Unborn and the Rite to Life movement.

The Rosary: The Rosary of the Knights of Columbus is symbolic of our Order's devotion to the cause of our Blessed Mother whose love has encircled all of us.

Before the Exemplification Mass, volunteers from the current Navigators served as Honor Guards and carried the symbols of the 4th Degree to a table in front of the Altar.

God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me that He has not co mmitted to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be to ld it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection betwee n persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good. I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, A preacher of truth in my own place while not inten ding it If I do but keep His commandments. Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever I am, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. If I am in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, Make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about. Therefore I shall trust Him.

I HAVE MY MISSION

--John Henry Cardinal Newman

During the Homily at the Exemplification Mass, Most Reverend Richard B. Higgins, S.T.L., D.D. the Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA quoted John Henry Cardinal Newman “I HAVE MY MISSION“.

This thought provoking quote is included for your reflection.
