In reflecting overthis past year asyour Chapter presi-dent, I am proud ofmany great strides

that we have made. We set out with adefined strategic plan, a plan that the Boardundertook as a collective team. We imple-mented several of the tactics outlined in ourstrategic plan. Here are some of the out-standing results of everyone's hardwork:

This year we received the GoldAward, this is the highest honor for a chap-ter.

The by-laws were revisited by theboard and were modified, giving futuregrowth to our chapter in electing a dueprocess for future leaders and what thoserequirements would be.

Also put in motion was the develop-ment of committees and subcommitteeswho could give their energies to accom-plishing the tasks at hand.

The chapter administrator, ChrisStewart, received a long awaited raise and ajob description format was written to helpthe chapter define the requirements for thisimportant position.

We reached out to our communities ina pro-bono effort, with the immense supportof Gene King and his sub-committee. As aresult, the prison system will have an edu-cation program on the "how to" of basicfinancial planning. Additionally, the assis-tance of credit counseling services in ourarea with active support by our members

will aid individuals and families who needdirection on debt management, purchasinga home, etc.

We made a $5000 donation to theFoundation for Financial Planning.

The study groups, with the support ofJoe Halpin, have expanded to a studygroup in New Jersey giving us two, plus atentative one in Pennsylvania.

The membership grew from 880members to 922, and probably will expandto over 1,000 next year, thanks to DalePope and his group for their persistenceand hard work.

The leadership of Jeff Lauterbach andhis committee with Liz Donaghy and MarkRioboli led to some of the best conferencesin memory, having the most attendanceever.

We also had our first town meeting atLincoln Financial Center with JimBarnash, our current National President, and yours truly speaking on current eventsof what is going on in financial planningand Jack McCaughn giving a "best prac-tice" presentation.

The Financial Planning week present-ed by Bob Smith and Pam Townsend gaveus more recognition in the community withmore endorsements from our local offi-cials. We have also seen an interest in theUniversity of Delaware wanting to partici-pate in our internship program and alsowanting us to teach the CFP program.

As a career coach and professional resumewriter, I’m often asked “How important arecover letters to my job search?” My answer is,“It depends on how long you want to searchfor your next job.” If you are in no hurry toget interviews, then don’t worry about yourcover letter.

The fact is I’ve never met a job searcher whowants to have a painfully slow job search. Thewhole point of sending out resumes is to getmultiple interviews as quickly as possible. Butmany job seekers still unwittingly sabotagetheir efforts by using substandard cover let-ters. Instead of helping you, your cover lettermay actually be hurting your job search.

For fast job search results, make sure to avoidthese top three cover letter mistakes:

1. Not understanding the hiring motives of your audience.2. Repeating rather than introducing your resume 3. Overuse of the word “I”

1. Not understanding the hiringmotives of your audience

There are three basic audiences that a jobseeker sends his/her resume to: executivedecision-makers, resume screeners, and third-party recruiters. Each of these groups has itsown hiring motives.

Executive decision-makers are lookingfor candidates who will have a significantimpact on bottom-line initiatives, such as timesaved, income generated, revenue built, etc.

Resume screeners are searching forcandidates who directly match the lists ofqualifications in the job description.

Third-party recruiters are looking forselling points to help position you as a top can-didate.

Knowing these hiring motives will help youcraft your cover letter specifically to catch theattention of your particular hiring audience. Byappealing directly to the reader, you are creatingan immediate bond that will make you astronger candidate.

2. Repeating rather than introducingyour resume

Repeating the exact same things you wrote inyour resume is one of the most common coverletter mistakes. No one wants to read the samething twice. By the time most people have fin-ished writing their resume, they feel that theyhave run out of ideas and just cut and paste tocreate a cover letter.

Instead, the cover letter should be what sells thereader on your skills. Like the jacket-coverintroduction to a good book, the cover lettershould give the reader a taste of the great thingsto come and encourage them to read more.

If you are don’t have any idea what your topskills are and how they will help the company, neither will your reader. Take the time to craftthe right words and statements to make yourskills shine.

3. Overuse of the word “I”

A cover letter that begins nearly every sentencewith “I” is as boring as a conversation withsomeone who only talks about himself. Thatkind of person one avoids at all costs. Is that theway you want your reader to see you?

Focusing all the attention on yourself may seemlike a good way to sell your skills. But it canalso reflect lack of interest in the company, in

the job, and in making a real contribution to thatworkplace. There’s a good balance to be drawnbetween selling yourself and selling what you cando for the company.

Creating variety in the sentences of your cover let-ter is an easy way to show your interest withoutbeing self-centered. By shifting the emphasis tothe recipient/company—and away from yourself—you can prove that your main interest is not just inwinning the job but also in doing it effectively. Tryto rewrite sentences that start with “I,” “me,” or“my,” to start with “You,” or “Your.” Show howyou can make a difference for them.

A cover letter that is poorly written may causeyour resume to be ignored. But a well-craftedcover letter will invite and encourage the reader totake a closer look at your resume. You’ll make apositive first impression before your resume iseven opened.

Rather than making your cover letter an after-thought, take the time to really consider the typeof presentation your cover letter will make. If yourresume isn’t winning you job interviews, considerhiring a professional resume writer to help. It’strue what they say: You never get a second chanceto make a good first impression.

I am very proud of these accomplishments. There are many committee members thathave given outstanding support to assist inmaking this one a banner year and that listwould be too long to mention, but I want togive them my personal, sincere "Thank You"and hope they will continue their support ofthe association. The friendships I have expe-rienced have been a pleasure for me this year, not to mention the great honor of my sonbecoming a CFP.

In having my email address in ournewsletter I have received a number of ques-tions and comments, one concern is havingmore practice management seminars of whichI will pass on to John O'Brien our nextChapter President. It is my sincere wish thatour new president John O'Brien will honorthe hard work of our colleagues and will sup-port and continue to build on the work that isnot yet finished.

The focus of the heart of financial planningentails integrity, competence and commitment ofwhat we can do for the association as our highestpriority.

In closing I would like to compliment an unseenworker who is always pleasant, helpful andunderstanding and that is Johanna Walters, whohelps us with getting our newsletter together.

In July 2005 sev-eral FPA Boardmembers and ProBono SteeringCommittee mem-bers met with NJplanners to discussthe Pro Bono pro-gram. The meet-ing quicklybecame a brain-

storming session that covered ideas forimproving our chapter and services to mem-bers. Some ideas are being implemented. Ifyou have an idea, concern, interest or justwant to vent let a Board member know.

Now back to our Pro Bono programs. Asyou may recall from previous newsletterswe have 14 members working on 12 powerpoint presentations. One is finalized andavailable for Pro Bono use. Six drafts havebeen reviewed and being revised for finalform. Three others are ready for review inmy attaché case (which could become a bot-tomless pit if I am not careful).

Equally IMPORTANT is that both the FPA

disclosure wording and generic NASDcompliance wording are now finalized. They will be added to each power pointpresentation as completed. The compli-ance wording has been submitted toNASD for their input. It may take a lit-tle time to receive the NASD OK. Moreon this as we move forward. The ProBono Volunteers Practitioner's Manualhas been revised and being reviewed forfinalization.

In September we developed a relation-ship with a community developmentorganization [501(c)(3)]. FPA plannersmay be conducting community seminars, providing individual counseling to needywith the help of CFP® candidates whocan earn work credits, and other mattersthat are in the planning process. Analliance is in process with the ConsumerCredit Counseling Services of DelawareValley (CCCSDV). Their representativeattended a recent Planners meeting. Welearned much from her.

FPA members in the Bethlehem-

Financial Planners Care ProgramA Pro Bono Service

Allentown area have formed a regional ProBono group. Another group has formed toserve Southern New Jersey. We also intend toform sub-groups in Delaware and varies coun-ties. If you are interested in jumping on thisPro Bono bandwagon, then contact us andwatch for our announcements when and whereour next meeting will be held.

Giving back to those in need who really appre-ciate a hand to raise them up rather than a handout is a worthwhile effort. "Give people a fishand you feed them for a day; Teach them to fishand you feed them for a lifetime" is still anappropriate saying. Let's be the lifetime andlifestyle planners for those who can't pay us.Financial income and psychic income are bothvaluable. Have an enjoyable holiday and ahealthy and prosperous 2006.

We're fast approaching the last leg of the Financial Planning Association® MEMBER-GET-A-MEMBER Triple Crown Event.

Remember, the individual who brings in the most new members or who wins all three events of the Triple Crown receives an all-expense-paid, four-day trip to this year'sKentucky Derby May 6, 2006. This includes airfare, transportation to and from historic Churchill Downs, preferred seating on Derby Day, and lodging (breakfast included).

What's more, FPA will sponsor two additional attendees from the winning member's chapter, to be named by the chapter, to participate in FPA's Annual Leadership Conference next September in Denver. The winning chapter can send four attendees to this major event, instead of just two like other chapters.

So chapters, support this membership push! And members, mount up and get in the race to bring in the most new members before March 6 . There's plenty of time left to win if you start now. Make your contacts. Be sure to inform them of the benefits of FPA membership and that FPA will be contacting them. Then submit their names to us by clicking here. We'll provide them with membership information.

Keep the Financial Planning Association strong and viable. The larger our membership, the louder our voices in national, state and local assemblies, and the more programs, educational opportunities, and special events we can offer you.

Fly the colors of FPA as you ride hard to the finish line with your new recruits. You could be the big Kentucky Derby winner. For each race you win, you'll also receive a $100 certificate redeemable towards your annual dues, andeveryone receives $25 towards their annual dues for each recruit who becomes a member and $10 for each new student member.

See you on Derby Day!

According to Brian Hamburger, ManagingDirector of MarketCounsel and speaker atour November 17th chapter meeting, theFPA has been at the forefront of regulatoryissues affecting our profession. Promotingthe profession and distinguishing whenfinancial advisors are acting as financialplanners and subject to fiduciary responsi-bility is an important issue affecting theindustry. He mentioned that the required dis-closures for investment representatives usingfee-based accounts who are not acting in thecapacity of an RIA or RIA representativethat will be in effect next year is alreadyhaving an impact on our industry.

Financial PlanningAwareness Week(October 3rd - 9th) -To begin with, Iwould like to thankPamela Holland-Townsend for hertremendous effort indeveloping and coor-dinating the activitiesfor this event. Thiswas a great opportu-

nity to let the public and the media understandthe benefits of financial planning.

Securing proclamations from state and cityofficials and having Financial Planning Weekdisplayed on the PECO sign at the top of theirbuilding in center city Philadelphia was justthe beginning. Other activities for the weekincluded the following media interviews andevents: University of Delaware PanelPresentation, CN8 Money Matters interviewtalking about Financial Planning Week, PhillySaves Presentation/Program at the ING café,CN8 Money Matters interview talking aboutdealing with disaster, and a retirement presen-tation at Medford Leas RetirementCommunity.

While Pam's effort was instrumental in plan-ning for Financial Planning Awareness Week,it would not have been possible without themany volunteers from our chapter. In addi-tion, it is my understanding that our chapterwas a leader among all FPA chapters in thenumber and scope of activities that were per-formed for this week's event.

Web Site - Have you taken a look at thePFA-PTSA web site lately? The address iswww.fpaphilly.org. View the latest infor-mation about our chapter meetings underthe Calendar of Events. Now you can evenregister for our meetings online. Go to ourMembers section for presentation handouts,to view the newsletter, and for study groupinformation. Looking for a new employee, then post you classified ad in our JobsListing section? It's free and you enter theinformation yourself with the easy to fol-low instructions. Take the time to check itout and see how you might be able tobecome more involved in your FPA chapteractivities.

FPA-PTSA Media Participation Team -Our chapter's association with Perception,Inc., a public relations firm, is helping uspromote the value of working with an advi-sor and creating more visibility for theFPA-PTSA and the CFP® license. Duringthe past few months members of the teamhave had several television appearancesand contributed to newspaper and internetarticles.

Since this is the last issue of the newsletterwhile I am V.P. of Public Awareness and amember of the Board, I personally wouldlike to thank every member of the MediaParticipation Team for their commitment tomaking the weekly story pitches to themedia so effective. Your professionalismand thoughtfulness made this new process asuccess. Of all of the FPA chapters thatPerception, Inc. works with, Christen has

told me that our chapter continually makesa very good impression with the media dueto our professionalism, knowledge, respon-siveness, and friendly personalities.

While some of us have questioned theresults of our weekly efforts, we were ableto generate numerous media opportunitieson television and in the printed and elec-tronic media. As far a lessons learned fromthis year's public relations effort: maybeweekly is too frequent; maybe we shouldfocus more of our efforts on targeting thelocal media of the Media ParticipationTeam member who submitted the storypitch; and trying to focus the story pitcheson events in the news, on local issues, andtargeted to the general populations and notnecessarily our target markets will proba-bly improve results.

Finally, it has been a pleasure serving asV.P. of Public Awareness and on the Board.Pamela Holland-Townsend will be servingas V.P. of Public Awareness in 2006 and hasbeen a member of the committee for sever-al years. Knowing Pam, I am confident thatthe Public Awareness activities of our chap-ter will grow and enhance the public andmedia's awareness and perception of ourprofession.

The holidays areupon us, whichmeans that all thefolks involved in pro-viding great educa-tion for our chapterare well along withplanning for 2006.Dates have been setfor quarterly meet-ings and the sympo-

sium and speaker selection is well along.

There are two changes in the quarterly meet-ings. First, acceding to member requests wewill try out a longer format in January andone of the later meetings (probably July). Also, we're moving the locations aroundmore than we have in past years. To giveyou a flavor, at our first quarterly meeting onJanuary 25th at Dave and Buster's downtownon the waterfront, we will begin at 2:00 witha speaker on distribution planning, then aspeaker from our program sponsor, then net-working from 4 to 5 and then our keynoter,Domingo Such, a partner at McDermott Will& Emery in Chicago and a tremendousspeaker, will cover advanced estate planningtopics and bring us up to date on whatevermight have gone on in Washington.Altogether the program offers 4 hours of CEcredit PLUS networking with your peers andgreat food. Mark your calendars and plan tobe there. Liz Donaghy and her sub-commit-tee have the planning for these events well inhand. The rest of the dates for 2006: March23 at Radnor, July 20 Penn's Landing,November 14 Plymouth Meeting.

The Symposium will be back at Villanova onMay 23rd. Paul LaViola, who did such agreat job on the Fall Retreat (the most atten-dees ever!!) has stepped up as co-chair, butnot without recruiting Burt Hutchison to joinhim. Volunteers are always needed so let usknow if you'd like to devote some time tothe symposium.

Continued success,

Congratulations Steve Wetzel, CFP®

Steve was in the local newspaper for FinancialPlanning week. He worked with Boy ScoutTroop 230 in Yardley, PA to earn their meritbadge for Personal Management. It is one ofthe more difficult badges for the boys to earn.

Steve spent a lot of time helping them learn thebasics of personal financial management.

Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter’s FPA Job Shadowing program to be held throughout the month

of January 2006. Please sign up today and host a CFP® Student to visit your office!

Job Shadowing is an exciting program which gives CFP® students a first-hand look at financial

and University of Delaware have shown interest in placing their students in real world situations.

Soon, we expect to create internship and job placement opportunities for Members and Students!

Just a few hours are all it may take to open doors and opportunities for you. Thank you

in advance for participating in this exciting initiative. My door and phone line are open to any

of you who wish to talk or have ideas for improvement to better serve all who participate.

Again, please sign up today and host a CFP® Student to visit your office!
