The Altar Flowers that will be offered at our Eucharistic Celebrations for this week are in memory of Edward Paul Sowa. This is a gift from Bill & Tammy Pocilujko.

I hope all had a good Thanksgiving. I visited my son’s family in Virginia. The granddaughters are doing well and all excited about a new addition — a puppy. It’s going to take some time to get used to each other and have peace restored but in the meantime there’s a lot for which to be thankful. What does that mean for us “to be thankful”? I read the story of a CEO of a start-up who, after two years called for a mandatory 3 hour meeting. “This wasn’t a party, an operational review or hackathon. The only item on the boss’s agenda that morning was to oversee a collective expression of gratitude, or as he termed it, ‘thanksgiving.’” The CEO was William Bradford who led the Pilgrim enterprise in Plymouth Colony in 1623. (WSJ Nov 25, 2018). The question arises, to whom do we give thanks? The secular culture says just to “be thankful” but they don’t say who the object of thanksgiving is: to whom does one direct the thanks? Gratitude has no meaning unless it has an object. What is the object of our gratitude? Over the years my family hosted people from different countries on Thanksgiving: countries from Asia, to South America and Europe. This is purely an American holiday, it’s found nowhere else. Yet, as with my family’s first Thanksgiving in 1961, when they are introduced to this holiday our guests realize the wisdom in taking account of all the gifts we have been given and to thank God for his good favor. It reminds us also of the importance of the domus ecclesia, the domestic church. Even those families who never pray together will say a prayer before dinner on Thanksgiving Day. I thank the Lord for my family here at St James the Less.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week is in loving memory of Barbara, Robert & Linda Narsavage. This is a gift from Tom Narsavage & family.
