10 tips for staying healthy during the winter months

’Tis the season for coughs, drips, sore throats, and fevers. Here’s how to prepare for—and weather—it.

1. The cold/flu ‘season’ often starts around Halloween when we start stuffing sugary treats into our bodies. Sugar lowers our immune system. And we don’t stop there we indulge at Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. No wonder our body’s rebel. Make sure to include lots of healthy, immune boosting recipes in your daily menu.

2. 70 -80 % of our immune system is in our gut. The role of the gut in our health is very important. Build the immune system with a good daily probiotic. You can find them at a natural food store near you. You can also make your own cultured foods such as kefir, sourdough, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and other natural foods. Find out more on how to find a good probiotic at www.mercola.com

3. Get outside and get fresh air. Once our children start spending more time indoors with other kids the germs have a hay day, passing back and forth. And the extra exercise will do them good.

4. The number one thing that lowers the immune system is stress. Mom’s need to lower their stress levels which in turn will lower your child’s stress. Take a deep breath; try things that help you relax during the holiday seasons. Put a plan in place to stay healthy.

5. Vitamin D supplements- cod liver oil is a great source of vitamins a & d. our grandmothers got it right when they lined the kids up and gave them a spoonful of the yucky stuff. Now a days we need to make sure your source is from a reliable company that test for low heavy metal in their products.

6. Elderberry is a powerful ally in the fight of the flu and cold. This is also great for kids who have lower immune systems. Black elderberry has been used medicinally for centuries. The berries contain high levels of antioxidant bioflavanoids and anthocyanins with natural antiviral properties, especially against the flu virus and certain strains of bacteria.

7. So you’ve done everything you can to keep healthy but you still feel the symptoms coming on. Try this great option. Make a garlic poultice: smash the garlic, mix in with a creamy coconut oil, spread on the feet, cover feet. Let it sit there for a while. When you can smell it on their breath you know it has saturated. Garlic is a great antibiotic and will help your white blood cells fight of infections.

8. Don’t forget the old standby, Chicken soup is a time-honoured remedy that is tried, tested and true. Chicken soup stops certain white blood cells (neutrophils) from congregating and causing inflammation, preventing large amounts of mucus from being produced. The hot soup also thins the mucus. Adding freshly chopped garlic to your soup gives the system a powerful boost. Spike your soup with red (chili) pepper flakes and onions to increase the broth’s decongestant power.

9. Believe it or not, those annoying symptoms you're experiencing are part of the natural healing process - evidence that the immune system is battling illness. For instance, a fever is your body's way of trying to kill viruses in a hotter-than-normal environment. Also, a fever’s hot environment makes germ-killing proteins in your blood circulate more quickly and effectively. Coughing is another productive symptom; it clears your breathing passages of thick mucus that can carry germs to your lungs and the rest of your body. Even a stuffy nose is best treated mildly or not at all. A decongestant restricts blood flow in the blood vessels in your nose and throat. But often you want the increased blood flow because it warms the infected area and helps secretions carry germs out of your body.

10. Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Try a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water, four times daily. To reduce the tickle in your throat, try an astringent gargle, such as tea, which contains tannins, to tighten the membranes. Or use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey, sage and cayenne pepper all of which are slightly antiseptic. Steep fresh sage leaves with the cayenne in 100 ml of just boiled water for 10 minutes. Add about 50 ml of honey; you can also add a pinch of salt and some cider vinegar to help loosen phlegm. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling.

THE TURKEY POPPED OUT OF THE OVEN

The Turkey popped out of the ovenand rocketed in to the air;

It knocked every plate off the tableand partly demolished a chair.

It ricocheted into a cornerand burst with a deafening boom,

Then splattered all over the kitchen, completely obscuring the room.

It stuck to the walls and the windows,it totally coated the floor,

There was turkey attached to the ceiling, where there had never been turkey before..

It blanketed every appliance,it smeared every saucer and bowl;There wasn’t a way I could stop it;

that turkey was out of control.I scraped and I scraped with displeasureand thought with chagrin as I mopped,That I would never again stuff a turkeywith popcorn that hadn’t been popped.

I took my five year old daughter

to buy tickets for an ice show

version of her favorite fairy tale,

“Beauty and The Beast” for a

Christmas gift. I picked her up

so she could look in the ticket

window. “Excuse me” she asked

the woman inside the booth, “but will the man turn into a

beast?” “They always do honey!” the ticket agent said

with a laugh.

------------------------------------------------------As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual,

“And what would you like for Christmas?”The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a

minute, then gasped: “Didn’t you get my e-mail?”

RUDOLF TO BLITZEN

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the

summer each year (the only members of the deer family,

Cervidae, to have females do so). Male reindeer drop their antlers

at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid December.

Female reindeer, however, retain their antlers till

after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer,

every single one of them, from Rudolf to Blitzen.... had to be a female.

THE THREE WISE WOMEN

You do know what would have happened if it had been three wise WOMEN instead of men, don’t you? They

would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole,

and brought disposable diapers as gifts!

Desparate Measures

Little Johnny went to his mother demanding a new bicycle. His mother decided that he should take a look at himself and the way he acts. She said, “Well Johnny, it isn’t

Christmas and we don’t have the money to just go out and buy you anything you want. So why don’t you write a letter to Jesus and pray for one instead.” After his

temper tantrum his mother sent him to his room. He finally sat down to write a letter to Jesus.

Dear Jesus, I’ve been a good boy this year and would appreciate a new bicycle.

Your Friend, Little Johnny

Now Little Johnny knew that Jesus really knew what kind of boy he was (Brat).

So, he ripped up the letter and decided to give it another try.

Dear Jesus, I’ve been an OK boy this year and I want a new bicycle.

Yours Truly, Little Johnny

Well, Little Johnny knew this wasn’t totally honest so he tore it up and tried again.

Dear Jesus, I’ve thought about being a good boy this year and can I have a new bicycle?

Signed, Little Johnny

Well, Little Johnny looked deep down in his heart, which by the way was what his mother was really wanting. He crumpled up the letter and threw it in the trash can and went running outside.

He aimlessly wandered about; depressed because of the way he treated his

parents and really considering his actions. He finally found himself in front of a Catholic Church.

Little Johnny went inside and knelt down, looking around not knowing what he should really do. Little Johnny finally got up and began to walk out the door and was looking at all the statues. All of a sudden he grabbed a small one and ran out the door. He went home hid it under his bed

and wrote this letter.

Jesus, I’ve broken most of the Ten Commandments; shot spit wads in school, tore up my sister’s Barbie doll and lots more. I’m desperate. I’ve got your mama. If you ever want to see her

again, give me a bike.

Signed, You know who

THOUGHTS ON CHRISTMAS

Sometimes I get the feeling that if Christmas, Father’s Day and birthdays did not exist, then

aftershave too, would not exist.

Christmas: The time when everyone gets Santamental.

I know. I know. I know that people say “It’s the thought that counts, not the gift”, but couldn’t

people think a little bigger!

Santa Claus is a Jolly fellow! Imagine all that driv-ing and still being able to say “Ho! Ho! Ho!

Father to three-year old: “No a reindeer is not a horse with TV antenna.

Every year, Christmas becomes less a birthday and more a Clearance Sale.

Christmas is in my heart twelve months a year and thanks to credit cards, it’s on my Visa Card

Statement twelve months a year also.

Some of these new toys are so creative and inventive. This year they have a Neurotic Doll. It’s

wound up already.

I bought my friend some gift-wrap for Christmas. I took it to the gift-wrap counter and told them to wrap it, but in different paper, so he’d know when

to stop unwrapping.

When I was young we were poor. We didn’t have a Christmas tree, we had a Christmas stump.

Christmas is a time when people get emotional over family ties, particularly if they have to

wear them.

It was so cold on Christmas Eve at the North Pole that Santa had to jump-start three of his reindeer.
