Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate the season of Advent, we can antici-pate that a number of people will hear an invitation to return to the faith and accept it. An important part of that return involves the celebration of Penance or Rec-onciliation on Wednesday, December 18 from 7-9 pm. The essential nature of the sacrament of Penance does not change in the instance for those approaching the sacrament after a long absence. Please tell your friends or neighbors that the priest will be sensitive to this re-ality and will help all who approach the sacrament with gentleness and compassion. Here are a few help-ful hints for the penitent who has been away: 1. You are more than welcomed and please don’t hesi-tate to ask for help. Let the priest know, and he will do all he can to make you feel at ease. Thank God that you have gotten up the courage to come back! We’ll help you with any awkwardness, and you don’t have to worry that you forgot the formula for the sacrament. 2. The priest will help you to acknowledge your sins truthfully, not laying on additional burdens nor “writing things off” as unimportant. The priest recog-nizes that you probably wouldn’t come to confession if you were not serious. The priest will meet you where you are and gently listen to you. All this is to help you move forward in hope. 3. Confession has its limits. While the priest desires to listen to you and your story, it is neither a counsel-ing session nor a time for spiritual direction. Please remember, if the priest suggests calling for an appoint-ment, he is not cutting you off but truly desires to real-ly take the time to go deeper. 4. The sacrament is about God’s forgiveness found in Christ. At the end of his conversation with the woman caught in adultery, Jesus says to her, “Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.” (John 8:11) In those words, he sends her away forgiven and also calls her to live a new way that reflects true conversion. On each Saturday, we have the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation from 11 a.m. to noon. There will be a special Advent Reconciliation Evening on Wednesday, De-cember 18, at 7 p.m., when we will celebrate the Sac-rament of Reconciliation with 15 priests from around

the area. This is a time for everyone, Polish and Eng-lish speaking parishioners, to have an opportunity for individual reconciliation. Please come and invite a friend. For those who have been away for a while, you will discover that it’s a life-changing experience. Sincerely, Father Mike Meany

Jesteś mile widziany i proś o pomoc. Dzięki Bogu, że nabrałeś odwagi, by wrócić! Kapłan spotka cię tam, gdzie jesteś, i delikatnie cię wysłucha. Wszystko po to, by pomóc ci iść naprzód w nadziei. 3.

Page 3: December 15, 2019 Third Sunday of Advent Page 1images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2852/512142121519.pdf · December 15, 2019 Third Sunday of Advent Page 1 St. John Brebeuf Church 8307 N.

Page 3 Third Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019

Przyjdź i zaproś przyjaciela. Odkryjesz, że jest to doświadczenie zmieniające życie. Ks. Mike Meany

SIMBANG GABI MASS

December 21, 5:00 pm Everyone is cordially invited to attend the Simbang Gabi Mass which will be officiated by Fr. Meany. Immediately following the mass, a reception will be held at the Parish Ministry Center.

This event is being sponsored by the Filipino-American Parishioners of SJB. For more information, call: Emilia Fernandez at 847-965-6796 or Sofie Caturan 847-208-2741.

WHAT IS SIMBANG GABI?

It is a Filipino Christmas tradition, a devotional nine-day series of Masses in honor of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary in anticipa-

tion of Christmas.

While Advent is a time of preparation for the coming

of the infant Jesus, Simbang Gabi is a time

to honor the Blessed Mother.

What a beautiful way to remember your loved ones, living or deceased, with a donation of $10 toward the pur-chase of flowers which will grace the church environment during the Christmas Season. Only one name or one family name may be listed per donation, i,e., Mr. John Smith or John Smith Family. Please place this completed form along with your donation, in an envelope marked Christmas Flowers. You may the place in in the offering basket or return it to the parish All Memorials must be received by December 31. They will be published in the bulletin in January. Two Ways to Maximize Your Charitable Gift and Minimize Your Taxes

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a withdrawal from an individual retirement account that is sent directly to a charity. You can instruct your IRA custodian to send the money to the organization you specify.

Who can do this? Anyone who is 70 1/2 or older at the time of the donation, wants to support a worthy cause, and reduce their taxes. (After you reach age 70 1/2, you are required to withdraw funds annually from your IRA and report the distributions as income on your tax return.)

Why the new interest in QCDs? A qualified charitable distribution preserves a way to donate money to chari-ty and still enjoy tax benefits under the new tax law. Traditionally, people who contribute to charity itemize their deductions; as such, they get a tax benefit for their gifts. Under the new tax law, many of these same people will be better off using the new and much larger standard deduction. But, in doing so -- in not itemiz-ing -- they get no tax benefit from donating to charity.

Or, you can give an appreciated stock and use the cash donation (you were going to donate) to re-purchase the stock -- thereby wiping out all the appreciate/capital gains liability as you do not need to rec-ognize any capital gain on a charitable gift of appreciated stock. When you ultimately sell the stock, you'll pay less taxes.

Congratulations to Christina!

Christina Curtis has recently been recognized by Marquette University for outstanding academic excellence and service of her Catholic faith by the Jesuits of her University. This is the highest award given to students by the Jesuits.

Currently, Christina is completing a double major and will receive her undergrad degree in Psychology and Health Sci-ence, May 2020. She is currently a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at the Church of the Jesu which is on the campus of Marquette University.

Prior to attending college she volunteered for over 400 hours of community service at Lutheran General Hospital.

Christina served as an altar server at St. John Brebeuf for over 5 years, and she was also a lector. In addition, she as-sisted her mother, Theresa, with religious education at SJB.

Still more suggestions of how to Keep Christ in Christmas

Turn off radios, TV and be prayerfully at peace, reflecting a renewed inner spir-itual joy to all others.

Greet people with "Merry Christmas", not "happy holidays".

Visit nursing homes, hospitals, and the home-found and bring them Christmas joys and greetings.

Sing religious Christmas carols together with family, friends: go Christmas caroling!

And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe in her womb leapt.” The first person in the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize Him in the womb of His own mother was a child, John the Baptist. How wonderful- God chose a pre-born child to recognize His Son. Let us continue to pray daily: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spir-itually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

15 grudnia: Trzecia Niedziela Adwentu W dzisiejszej Ewangelii Jezus mówi nam, że dobrą nowinę można zobaczyć, dotknąć, odczuć i usłyszeć przez życie ludu Bożego. Jesteśmy teraz

zobowiązani podjąć posługę Jezusa, ale nie możemy prosić ludzi, aby przyjęli słowo, powinniśmy to słowo pokazać, nasze działania muszą mówić za nas.

Boże Narodzenie to czas miłości i dawania prezentów, prosimy o udział w posłudze Jezusa, przekazując dar dla Bractwa św. Wincentego a Paulo, aby ubodzy mogli poznać dobrą nowinę o Jezusie.

Wincentego a Paulo? Jeśli znasz rodzinę która po-trzebuje pomocy prosze zadzwoń do naszego Stowarzyszenia St. Vincent de Paul. Razem możemy pomóc cierpiacym i potrzebującym.

December 15: Third Sunday of Advent In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that

the good news can be seen, touched, felt and heard through the lives of God’s people. We are now charged to take up the ministry of Jesus’s, but we can’t just ask people to take our word for it; our actions must speak for us.
