Fort Bend Theatre and Winnie-the-Pooh join Second Mile Mission in efforts to feed the hungry

Oh no, Eeyore has lost his tail! See Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger,

Piglet and friends assist their old pal while donating to Stafford’s underprivileged population as Fort Bend Theatre presents A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail December 3-18 Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm at 2815 North Main Street in Stafford. “We are pleased to once again raise awareness and offer assis-tance to Second Mile Mission,” states Executive Artistic Director Tarra McCain. “We applaud their efforts in feeding the hungry and as Winnie-the-Pooh reminds us when his tummy is empty, ‘there is always time for a little something.’ In this season of giv-ing, it is extremely important we remember those families less for-tunate than our own.”

Patrons are asked to bring

nonperishable food items when attending shows. “Currently 8% of Fort Bend County’s popula-tion is living in poverty, includ-ing 10% of children under the age of 16. Second Mile Mission Center provides crisis care needs for more than 22,000 of these families each year. Organizations like ours face a growing need as more families seek help during these times of economic hardship. We are thankful for the support of Fort Bend Theatre and our com-munity,” said Executive Director Sarah White.

Tickets are available online at the FBT website www.fortbend-theatre.com for $8 per person. Group rates are available. For more information, please call us at 281-208-3333.

Choose your preference on 2013-2014 proposed FBISD school calendars

Fort Bend ISD now develops the school calendar two years in advance to facilitate plan-ning for the community and staff. The Calendar Committee began working on calendar options in September for the 2013-2014 school calendar and has reached consensus on three draft calendars for review.

Please view the calendar development process presenta-tion and the three draft cal-endars. Select your preference for one of the calendars and provide any comments. To access the draft calendars, go to www.fortbendisd.com and look under “Quick Links” and click on “2013-2014 Proposed Calendars.” You may also copy and paste the following link into your browser to view the draft calendars at: http://www.fortbendisd.com/calen-dar2014/.

The Texas Legislature has mandated that all school dis-tricts start no earlier than the fourth Monday in August – no exceptions, no waiv-ers. Therefore, the first day of school for the 2013-2014 school year will be August 26, 2013.

The calendar preferences will be taken on this webpage until January 6, 2012.

Treatment of Heart Disease in DiabeticsType 2 diabetes is a common condition characterized by increased blood

sugar, resistance of the body to insulin, and decreased insulin production. Insulin normally functions to move sugar into cells. When insulin resistance occurs, blood sugar build up results. Persons diag nosed with type 2 diabetes are likely at an increased risk for cardiovascu lar conditions, such as a heart attack. High blood pressure, obesity, and smoking also increase the risk for cardiovascular conditions in persons with diabetes. Persons with diabetes may not have any symptoms to indicated that there is an increased risk for coronary heart disease.

Smokers are encouraged to quit for prevention of cardiovascular conditions. Diet and exercise also help. Persons with type 2 diabetes may be advised to take aspirin daily for prevention of cardiovascular events. Medications for high cholesterol and high blood pressure also may be prescribed to reduce the risk of heart conditions. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor medications, such as lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) and ramipril (Altace), are medications for treatment of high blood pressure. These medications may be prescribed even for persons with diabetes without elevated blood pressure, because of their benefits in prevent ing cardiovascular events. www.DiagnosticFootSpecialists.com

w w w . p r i n c i p l e d c h i r o p r a c t i c . n e t

What a mess!.... Rarely does the U.S. Supreme Count do something that so directly affects the citizens of Fort Bend. In fact, I don’t know if they have ever made a specific ruling that affected the citizens of Fort Bend like the ruling they made last Friday

that froze the redistricting maps a threejudge federal panel in San Antonio redrew.

Every 10 years after the census, redistricting occurs if necessary and since the Texas population had increased that would allow it four more Congressional seats, it has been ground zero in the redistricting wars.

So the state lines were redrawn and in Fort Bend’s case, it radically changed the lines in District 26, Charlie Howard’s district for the past umpteen years.

Howard had earlier indicated that he would not run again, throwing the election open to all sorts of challengers. He did this after the Texas legislative map effectively gerrymandered Howard’s supposed main opponent, the popular Sugar Land City Councilwoman Jacquie Chaumette, out of his district.

So Chaumette bought a house in the new district and moved, but under the San Antonio judges’ plan, Chaumette lost half her strongest voting area. The plan also caused another candidate, Sonal Bhuchar to supposedly move and former GOP county chairman Rick Miller to say he was not going to run.

Up jumped the devil.......Then the Supreme Court decision to consider the case on January 9 puts everything on hold. Supposedly, the county chairman of both political parties are being told to not sign up any new candidates. The current deadline for signing up is December 15. The decision to hear arguments in January also means that the March primary is in jeopardy. There is even

talk about having two primariesone for those unaffected by the new lines and another later primary for those affected by the new lines.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch.....Rumor has it that a former GOP official is on the hot seat as a result of materials he took when he left his office. Nobody is talking, claiming an ongoing investigation. This has happened before when people left office, but the incoming official has never brave enough to follow through with an investigation. We’ll we watching how this plays out.

And now for something entirely different.......I had to go to the county tax assessor’s office in Sugar Land this week to take care of some license plate business. I went after lunch, hoping all those clerks would be back at their desk and working. There are seven stations at the tax office and of the seven, only four were manned the entire time I was there.

One good thing is one had to take a number when entering and when I got there the sign said they were serving number 88. I got number 08 so I figured 20 people were ahead of me.

At first I thought it was going to go fast as one clerk kept calling for people who had simple problems, like just picking up a sticker or just paying their taxes in time to get a 2011 date stamp.

That worked pretty good except for the people who tried to scam their way in early by claiming they had this simple problem. They botched up the system because they then argued with the clerk that they should get this expedited treatment and the clerk wasted minutes arguing with them. I think those scammers should have to go to the back of the line and start all over. Simply take their number away from them and make them get another number.

In the first 15 minutes I waited the clerk that was simply issuing stickers was the only one who changed customers at all. The others (slowly) worked

with their original customer the entire 15 minutes.

One clerk who had not had a customer the whole time I was first there, finally called a number. When no one answered, she got up and wandered around then sat down and talked on the telephone. She eventually called for people who simply wanted to pay their taxes for this year. She got one person who wanted to do that.

Then another clerk went on a break and someone took her place. That new person never called a number. She simply sat there because I guess Patsy Schultz, the tax assessor, has issued an edict that four clerks have to be seated at all times.

When I was finally called, my clerk handled my problem quickly and efficiently. I was there for a total of 45 minutes.

This puts me in mind of the drivers license bureau with several major differences.

First, the tax office has benches where you can sit to wait and they have that ubiquitous number system. At the drivers license, you have to stand in line and there is no numbering system.

Both offices has someone working a line that takes care of fast and simple problems,

like picking up the correct form or turning in something.

At the drivers license bureau, all stations are occupied 95% of the time. I guess they get up occasionally to get a drink or bathroom break.

Both offices are unfailing polite to their customers.

I guess in the final analysis I’m reminded of what a relative of mine who works in a drivers license bureau observed. She says: “Look, you only go every once in a while. Do you think the taxpayers want to pay staff and equip offices where you never have to wait the very few time you go there?”

My answer to that is a resounding “No!” It doesn’t hurt me to wait a while the few times a decade I visit either office where so much can now be done online. I guess my main complaint is the seven stations manned by four clerks in the Tax Assessors’ office. Those empty stations are tantalizing to those of us who are waiting.

Larry D. Purcell, 66, of Mis-souri City, Texas passed away on November 18, 2011. Larry was born February 1, 1945, in Chey-enne, Wyoming to Lawrence and Ruth Purcell. He spent his early years in Webb City, Missouri, and graduated in 1963 from Alba High School, Alba, Missouri. In 1965 he married Marilyn Sue Allen of Joplin, Missouri. They had one daughter, Nichole Pur-cell, born in 1972. Leawood, Missouri, a suburb of Joplin, hon-ored Larry by electing him mayor for two terms. The Purcells attended Byers Ave-nue Methodist Church in Joplin.

Larry worked for Gulf Oil until 1982 when he accepted a position with the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Houston, Texas. Larry, Marilyn, and Niki moved to Missouri City, Texas which became their home for 29 years. Larry went on to work for Coca Cola Enterprises as Risk Manager for the Central Division of the United States until he retired in 2001 after 22 years of service.

Larry coached his daugh-ter’s softball teams for eleven years taking the girls to State tournaments several times. His coaching began in Joplin and continued in Missouri City. He served as president of Sta-Mo Girls Soft-Ball League and on the Board of Directors.

An active member of South-minster Presbyterian Church in Missouri City Larry served as deacon, elder, and Stephen Min-

ister. He initiated and led the Al-pha Program, was a Christ Care small group leader, and served faithfully on many committees at the church. He also served as a substitute teacher at Southmin-ster School. His dedicated ser-vice came from the conviction of his words, “You may be the only Bible people read today.”

Larry’s literary career began after retirement. Inspired by

his granddaughters, Danielle and Victoria Hertel, he wrote the “Lady Bug” series. He published three books entitled “Two Little Lady Bugs,” “Lady Bug Picnic,” and “The Lady Bug and The Talking Stone.” A fourth book is in publication

called “Lady Bugs are Siblings Too.” As well as his writing ability Larry was gifted and enjoyed drawing, painting, and stained glass.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of 46 years, his daughter, Nichole Hertel, two granddaughters, Danni and Tori, of Missouri City, Texas, a brother and wife, Ron and Beverly Purcell of Webb City, Missouri, and many family members and faithful friends.

A Memorial Service was held at Southminster Presbyterian Church, November 26, 2011, to honor his life, his accomplish-ments, and his faithfulness.

Contributions in memory of Larry Purcell may be made to Southminster School, 4200 Cartwright Road, Missouri City, Texas 77459.

SHOCK TREATMENT

If your vehicle bounces over bumps, the problem likely stems from worn shock absorbers. These suspension components are designed to dampen or eliminate oscillation by the springs once they compress over bumps in the road. Without shock absorbers, the springs would continue to bounce before the energy within their coils dissipates. Therefore, not only is it important that shock absorbers work to keep the wheels firmly planted on the road, they play a critical role in bringing your vehicle to a stop. Even on flat pavement, aggressive braking tends to lift the tires, which reduces grip and stopping ability. For these reasons alone, as pistons and seals in shock absorbers begin to fail, it is imperative that they be replaced.

You know your car better than anyone else because you drive it every day. When something is not right with your car, it sends you a signal. If your car bounces, please call AUTO CENTRAL us at 281-499-9684 to schedule an appointment. One of our ASE Certified Master Technicians can inspect the various components of the vehicle, including the shock absorbers. We are located at 2526 5th St., Stafford. Do you have a car care question? Visit our discussion board on Facebook-Auto Central. Autocentralautomotive.com.

Have Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

HINT: A “strut” is a shock absorber that is encased in a housing that acts as a structural component that supports the entire wheel assembly and the spring.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital achieves exceptional compliance in national patient care standards

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) has been rec-ognized for outstanding perfor-mance in achieving 100 percent compliance in all of its 26 core measures for third quarter, 2011. Core measures are national stan-dards that compare the quality of care that hospitals give patients.

MSLH is committed to consistently delivering qual-ity health care using proven therapies. It follows core mea-sures developed by The Joint Commission, the country’s pri-mary accrediting body in health care. These measures have been shown to improve outcomes of patient care in four catego-ries: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care improvement.

Its 100 percent compliance rate means all 294 patients with-in these categories received 100

percent of the recommended treatments known to get the best results for patients with certain medical conditions, or surgical procedures.

Chief Nursing Officer Janet Leatherwood said it’s rare for a large hospital like MSLH to achieve 100 percent compliance in core measures. However, MSLH’s Quality Management

Department identifies patients early in their hospital stay, and continuously monitors their progress to ensure they are receiving the best care with its Daily Quality Rounds pro-gram. “We work diligently with nurses, case managers, thera-pists and other care providers to review every patient, every day,” Leatherwood said.

For more than 40 years, the Richmond State Supported

This is the newest display created and donated by Joshua Alderman in 2011 for his Eagle Scout project.

Living Center (RSSLC), for-merly named Richmond State School, 2100 Preston, Richmond, has been delighting visitors of all ages with Project Noel, a collec-tion of Christmas displays featur-ing holiday favorites from Santa Claus to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Children who first saw the

project blossom in the early 1970’s now bring their children and grandchildren to see the more than 40 holiday scenes that light up and decorate the 241-acre campus. When adults bring their children through, it reminds them of the storybook characters they grew up with.

It really brings a family together because it lends itself to passing on stories from their childhood and the first time they drove through campus in its entire holiday splendor. The continued success of Project Noel is because of the sup-port of the community and the nostalgia that accompanies the endeavor.

Project Noel is funded by the non-profit organization, the

Volunteer Services Council (VSC) of the Richmond State Supported Living Center. If you or your group would like to adopt an existing display for refurbishing or to create a new one, please contact the Community Relations office at RSSLC, 281/344-4525.

Project Noel runs from 6 – 9:00 p.m. each night which began December 1 and will be available through December 31.

Santa and his elves will visit with children from 6 – 9 p.m. on December 16, 17, 18. Take a picture with Santa for $ 3 each or bring your own camera. The tour of displays and Santa’s visit are free. A box is set up at the end of the tour if you would like to make a donation. All pro-

ceeds go towards programs and services that directly benefit the residents of the Richmond State Supported Living Center.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

FOOT ISSUES FOR THE ELDERLYDisabilities in the elderly are often caused by foot problems. Ingrown

toenails, calluses, corns, fungal infections, and other problems can cause pain and result in foot deformities. Many of the foot problems experi-enced by seniors are the result of inadequate foot care, which can result in an improper gait and increase the chances of falling. Foot health for the elderly can be promoted by diligent daily care. Feet should be cleaned and thoroughly dried. Toenails should be trimmed straight across, and lotion should be applied to the feet and massaged in to prevent dryness. Proper footwear should be worn to avoid slipping and foot injuries. Seniors should maintain regularly scheduled visits with their podiatrists.

For comprehensive foot care for everyone in your family, we wel-come you to call us today. Foot problems come from many sources—improper shoes, muscular imbalances, disease, neglect, trauma, heredity, too much physical exertion, even too little movement. If your feet are cramping your lifestyle, professional care is in order. We know that good foot health can enhance your daily existence and improve your quality of life. Our approach is conservative, gentle, and caring at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. We welcome your call for family foot care at 281-980-3668. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

Missouri City tag line may be paired with sidewalk repairs and bond fundsBy Elsa Maxey

If the taxpayers in Missouri City say it’s okay, the city will be

forging forward by tackling what its mayor refers to as a $33 mil-lion problem. “If we’re going to fix sidewalks, then we’re going to do it all over the city,” said Mayor Allen Owen. Isolating the repairs to only one area with tree root problems that damage sidewalks, he recently explained, is not a plan for their repair.

But letting the voters decide on financing the repairs throughout the city with bond money may be the most feasible route for the city to take.

For one, it will do away with resident perceptions of favorit-ism often cited by some about

the implementation of the city’s sidewalk maintenance policy. The policy has also been limited on the number of sidewalks the city can repair in a year due to a finan-cial cap, $150,000, and it also has spelled out sidewalk eligibil-ity to determine which sidewalks

would be repaired and who would pay for the repairs—some by the city and others not.

Last week, the city coun-cil approved a sidewalk policy, updating the one that has been in use since 2007. It includes a pro-vision that states property owners should mitigate the roots of trees/landscaping prior to city sidewalk repair. Also adopted is the city’s position of no longer pursuing citations or liens against property owners to secure mitigation of root problems. Due to the current economy, this turned out to be a contentious requirement to many facing fines.

The city reports that the newly adopted sidewalk policy states that if roots are not mitigated within 30 days of owner notifi-cation, the sidewalk should be replaced in order of priority based on the severity of the problem. Council asked city staff to include the option in the policy that in cases of tree root mitigation, if the

property owners agree to indem-nify the city for any loss, staff will mitigate the root problem and repair the sidewalk, states a city report.

Recently, after the city council said it would go to the voters when it heard a sidewalk com-mittee report, it was stated that a bond issue could be specifi-cally targeted on sidewalk repairs. This upcoming year, Missouri City will probably be focused on including this sidewalk repair issue in the next bond committee cycle which it reports will also include root mitigation as part of the proposed bond issue.

So for the Show Me City if it gets voter approval of a sidewalk repair bond, in the near future it may be showcasing hazard free, safe sidewalks throughout all its neighborhoods. Show me side-walk repairs and show me bond money may just be paring that will tackle the city’s persistent sidewalk problems.

Richmond IBC bank robbed yesterdayBy LeaAnne Klentzman

The International Bank of Commerce (IBC) in the 5200 block of FM 1640 in Richmond was robbed Tuesday morning.

Richmond public information officer Master Sergeant Lowell Neinast said, “Officers from the Richmond Police Department are working a bank robbery case that occurred at 10:00 am today, 12/13/2011, at the IBC Bank located at 5250 FM 1640 in Richmond.”

Neinast said bank employees said the suspect walked into the bank lobby at 10:00 a.m. and went straight to a teller and hand-ed over a note stating that he was robbing the bank. As a result of the note, the teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect who said “thanks“ then ran from the bank. Neinast said no weapon was displayed.

The suspect was described as a white male approximately 5’ 6” to 5’10”, 150 to 160 pounds. He was wearing a royal blue hoody shirt, a dark neoprene mask covering his mouth, dark colored (blue or black) gloves, and sunglasses. The suspect left the bank and ran to his car that was parked at the nearby Valero convenience store located at 1212 FM 2218. He was last seen leaving the Valero park-ing lot in a newer model gray or silver Toyota, either a Camry or

Corolla, heading west bound on FM 1640.

Missouri City takes proactive steps to curb crime during the holidaysTaking proactive steps to curb

crime in Missouri City, the Police Department will be utilizing the newly-formed Burglary and Auto

Theft or “BAT” Team during the holiday season. The group, which was formed in September, specifi-cally focuses on those crimes.

Missouri City’s Burglary and Auto Theft Team is working to curb crime during the holidays. The team has four veteran police officers, from left: Det. Caleb Rule, Det. Marcus Montemayor, Officer Jazton Heard, and Officer Matt Schlosser. Their faces are partially blocked for security reasons.

“Since the formation of the BAT Team, auto thefts have decreased 20 percent over the previous year, and auto break-ins have declined 20 percent,” Asst. Police Chief Mike Berezin said. “Eleven stolen vehicles have been recovered, 10 auto theft sus-pects have been arrested and over $113,000 in stolen property has been recovered.”

Missouri City Police officers are partnering with their law-enforcement counterparts in nearby cities to ensure holiday shoppers enjoy the festive sea-son safely. Officers in Missouri City, Sugar Land and Stafford aim to reduce car burglar-ies through the use of targeted patrols, surveillance operations and educational opportuni-ties. Shopping areas and health club parking lots are common spots for these types of crimes. Officers will make the areas a priority as they patrol the cities during the holiday season.

To make sure your holiday shopping experience is memo-rable, here are some safety tips:

• Stay alert to your surround-ings and the people around you.

• If you must carry a purse, do not wrap the straps around your arms or shoulders. Instead, carry a clutch purse under your arm.

• If you return to your vehicle to unload packages and continue shopping, place your purchases in the trunk.

• Have your car keys ready and in your hand before leaving the store.

• Watch purchases while eating in mall food courts; bags as well as purses can be easily switched or taken.

The Austin Angels are truly AngelsEach year, the Austin Angels

Dance Team helps families who are in crisis, enjoy a special holiday. The Angels rallied to contribute their fashion sense, knack for fun, and love for shop-ping to gather the items need to make this a special holiday for these families. This is the eighth holiday season the Angels have adopted a families. This year the Angels decided to adopt two Austin High School families that have both been faced with the loss of their homes. This is their way to give back to those who are in dyer need especially during this holiday season.

Mrs. Elizabeth Heathcock (director of the Austin Angels Dance Team) said, “Not only were we able to meet and exceed

our adopted families wish list, we also had a great time build-ing stronger relationships within our team by putting all the items together during our holiday cel-ebration.”

Through this program, the girls are afforded the opportu-nity to engage in a “hands-on” project to provide assistance to families in need. By sponsor-ing a family, they help make the holiday’s truly blessed and spread cheer to others. The Austin Angels also volunteer in the community by volunteering their time for such activities as the Austin Angels Junior Clinic (April 28, 2012) and fundrais-ing for a cause, like the Tracie Hester / Life Donor Scholarship Walk.

Shown is the Austin Angels Dance Team with the donated items.

Imagine! Lo and behold, the following week when they returned, someone had liberated their joyful noise. Not to worry, lack of instruments did not stop their joy nor their sound, BUT, it begs the question did the penance the crooks got for those instru-ments make a dent in the Penance they will need for steal’n from the church?

Think we could get some of these mullets to call, say, Matagorda County local?

The city’s state-of-the-art traf-fic technology is part of an over-all traffic system upgrade. When fully operational, the system will provide integrated monitor-ing and management of traffic through a central operating sys-tem for traffic signals throughout Missouri City.

Ultimately, the system will help achieve increased transporta-tion system efficiency, enhanced mobility, improved safety and offer fuel efficiencies for motor-ists.

4, 2007 with a bank robbery and ended with the arrest of six of the nine men on September 16, 2011.

During their rein of terror the gang would case the tar-geted lending intuition, leave running vehicles with doors open near-by then hit in the morning hours, all across the Houston metro area. They would enter the banks terror-izing the staff and patrons with shotguns, assault-style weap-ons and semi-automatic pistols. According to federal authori-ties, the group stole more than $350,000 over all.

Others charged in the con-spiracy to interfere with com-

merce have been identified as Marcus Rosemond Tarpley, 30; Anthony Demonde Nowlin, 22; Alonzo Horace Harris, 35; Hakim Ibn Ahmad, 29; Reginald Mosley, 35; Mark Eric Simpson, 28; Shelton McGowen, 22; and Derrick Williams, 26.

By the end of November, eight of the nine suspects were in custody leaving only Simmons on the run. During his time on the lam, Simmons was the target of a vast array of publicity from digital bill-boards to wanted flyers.

Last week, Simmons suc-cumbed to the pressure and turned himself in.

FBISD bus driver and 12 year old fightBUS DRIVER, continued from page 1

Dec. 5, after students were let out and a female bus driver and the student from the mid-dle school “were involved in an altercation on a bus at the school,” confirms Porter.

Reports indicate that there were onlookers that witnessed the fight, about 12 students on the bus, and a video clip taken afterwards shows the agitated 12-year old talking to an adult identified as a school admin-istrator. They are both outside

the bus which is in front of the school. The bus driver aboard the bus is seen attentively look-ing at what seems to be the two of them.

Should an arrest follow? An interview with the girl’s mother calls attention to a double stan-dard in which she maintains that a similar incident involving her would have had the police called on her, and she would have been jailed immediately for what her daughter endured.

Bus driver/student alterca-tions are not isolated incidents. Situations in other parts of the country depending on the grav-ity of an incident result in fel-ony and misdemeanor assault charges with possible jail time for either or both parties. Porter said student safety is their high-est priority, and that FBISD is fully cooperating in the investi-gation. “We will continue to do everything possible to maintain a safe learning environment for our students,” she said.

Stafford concerned about 60 day termination noticeTERMINATION, continued from page 1

which could cost more money for coming up with facility plans and other arrangements to house the city’s stray animals.

Councilmember Wen Guerra told councilmembers that Missouri City will be annexing Sienna Plantation in the near future and that could mean the animal shelter would end up over-loaded and may not be able to accommodate Stafford’s needs.

City Attorney Art Pertle said that if Missouri City needs more room in the animal shelter, Stafford would probably know well in advance in addition to the 60 days. Upon termination of the agreement, Stafford would be repaid by Missouri City on a pro rata basis. Stafford’s $100,000 payment to Missouri City will be made in a lump sum and come out of a $4 million plus account that Stafford city officials are guarding not to have go under $4 million.

Councilmember Robert Sorbet said it would “behoove the city” to start planning in the near future for the next contingency given the likelihood that “Missouri City will outgrow a facility that Stafford is helping pay for.”

A 17-acre school prop-erty was mentioned as a pos-sibility and even what could turn out to be a missed opportunity. Councilmember Cecil Willis said Fort Bend County has been look-ing at the possibility of an animal facility on the east side of the county, and other local govern-ment entities that include Stafford and possibly Meadows Place could factor into a joint effort.

The approval of the arrange-ment with Missouri City at this time was referred to as a place holder that will still allow the city to look into future alternatives. For now, the city would not like to be “left out on a limb” two to three or five years from now. It will soon begin plans for other alternatives.

Today in Texas politics; can’t wait for tomorrow! TODAY, continued from page 1

Texas Senate and Texas’s con-gressional districts, until further order by the three-judge panel in San Antonio or the U.S. Supreme Court.” Thus political party chairs across the state have been told to stop accepting candidate filings.

This is yet another fly in the ointment for the new electoral districts drawn based on the 2010 census. Right now, Redistricting voter lines in Texas is a tangled mess. For example, there are areas in the county that have been changed from one state repre-sentative district to another by virtue of each different map. At last count, some Richmond/

Rosenberg residents have been in three different state rep districts based on the three maps prof-fered.

Every decade, based on the latest census, government must assess and realign voter lines to best represent their constituents. It is 2011 and the 2010 census has been confirmed, so, new voter lines were drawn from the pre-cinct level to the state and finally to the federal level. Those new electoral districts were sent to the Department of Justice for approv-al, as Texas has a history of violat-ing the 1964 Voter’s Right’s Act.

When the maps made it to the Federal system for approval, they failed. The line were redrawn,

lawsuits were filed and today the issue is still being fought in the courts. So in an effort to get some clarity, Abbott asked that all state and federal candidate filings be stopped and the deadline, which is Thursday, be either postponed or moved.

No matter how this plays out, it appears that there is no way for all the races to take place dur-ing the scheduled March Primary. Which means either all races will be moved to a later date (maybe May) or there will be two sets of primaries; one for the county races in March and another for the state and federal races in May.

Which begs yet another ques-tion, What if there is a runoff in March? Those races will have to be completed in May, meaning the electronic voting machines will be tied until after the runoff, so then what?

As of Friday the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments for and against the Texas re-dis-tricting maps. Only problem is: the hearing will not take place until January 9, 2012.

Cutting to the chase since the politicians can’t seem to get along, in the end, it is just going to cost more money as multiple elections are expensive.

Stoppers, Inc. will pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the apprehension and convic-tion of a suspect, who attacked a clerk while trying to rob the store.

Monday, December 5, 2011, about 9:40 p.m., Fort Bend deputies were called to a rob-bery at the Timewise (Shell) Convenience Store, located in the 3500 block of FM 762, just outside Richmond.

When deputies arrived on the scene they were told by the clerk that a very aggressive man entered the store wielding a pis-tol demanding cash. According to the sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel, before the clerk could respond to the suspect‘s orders, the suspect began to hit the clerk in the head with his pistol. Haenel went on to say, “The clerk said he raised his arms and

rushed toward the bandit, who turned and exited the store.” That clerk was treated at the scene by EMS and later taken to the hospital by private vehicle, said Haenel.

A second store clerk who had been outside during the melee told deputies that she had seen the suspect run across FM 762 and into the parking lot of the nearby shopping center where Petco and Marshall’s were locat-ed. A perimeter was set and a search of the area was conducted yielding no results.

The suspect was described as a white male about 30 to 35 years of age with shortly trimmed gray hair; wearing a red hoodie.

for Fort Bend

Decision pending about mapsDECISION, continued from page 1

the constitution reserves for the legislature.

“The U.S. Supreme Court order should affect only State Representative, State Senate and Congressional candidates in Texas,” maintains Gillen. Fort Bend County's precinct lines at this point are probably not affect-ed. There were local hearings leading to the approved maps for the four precincts submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice. The maps were modified somewhat due to population changes over the last 10 years. But a potential problem could arise if the precinct lines need to be redrawn before the primaries to correspond with and accommodate new map lines. But, this is not likely.

This we know--no maps are in effect for House, Senate and

congressional districts and on Jan. 9, the U.S. Supreme Court begins a review of Texas’ redistricting maps to determine which will be used in next year’s election.

A decision from the highest court could delay the primaries or there may be more than one. “I would hope we do not ultimately have two primaries, one for the offices under the Supreme Court ‘Stay’ and another for everyone else, but that could happen,” said Gillen.

Splitting elections? That too, has been tossed around as a possi-bility. Keep the presidential, State Board of Education and other statewide primaries in place on March 6…maybe, but move the congressional and legislative pri-maries to a later date, May 22…or just move all the elections to a later date with runoffs in the summer.

Gillen said that while this will

create confusion, this is an impor-tant “states rights” issue.

After the 2010 census numbers were released, population growth to Fort Bend County gained it a new state legislative seat and statewide with an increase of 4.3 million people, four congressio-nal district seats were garnered raising its current 32 member del-egation to 36.

“We must ask ourselves if we want our legislative districts drawn by people we elect,” asks Gillen referring to the legislature. The alternative, he said, is to have federal judges rather than the Texas Legislature, which Gillen prefers to draw districts and not someone in Washington, D.C.

Due to its history of racial dis-crimination, Texas is one of nine states included in the 1965 Voting Rights Act that requires federal approval before changing district maps or voting laws.

A Richmond man has been arrested for his part in a Rosenberg aggravated robbery.

Public Information Officer Lieutenant Colin Davidson announced the details on the arrest of Jerry Suniga. According to Davidson, Sungia, 45, of

Dunn. Through their efforts, Jerry Sungia was identified as the sus-pect and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The following Saturday, Sungia was arrested and taken into custody on Random Dyer Road in west Fort Bend County. He is currently in the Fort Bend

Elkins baseball players do more than play ballElkins Knights participat-

ed in the 2nd Annual Food Drive early Friday morning – 50 players contributed to the overall goal of “A Ton of Food” as they loaded up four trucks to head to Terry HS for drop off at Second Mile Mission. “The boys real-ly engaged in the process of helping others, we want to be a team that gives back to the community”, said head coach Richard Thistlethwaite.

“Thanks so much for your generous donations of food and toys for the families we serve at Second Mile Mission Center. Your donations will make it possible for the Mission to help an increased number of fami-lies during the holiday season.

Recently we had ninety one families come to Second Mile

for help in one day. That’s more families than most days on record outside of hurricane relief periods.

Also, many children will have Christmas toys this year because of your donations.

Please know that your gen-erosity will put smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts. Thanks again for stepping up with your contributions to share with families in distress in our community.”

Rev. Kent Landry

On Sunday, December 18, at 7:00PM, Southminster Chancel Choir will present its annual Christmas Concert.

This year's concert will feature two major works: Ottorino Respighi's "Laud to the Nativity" and K. Lee Scott's "Sing the Songs of Bethlehem."

Both works will be accom-panied by a professional orchestra.

"Laud to the Nativity" is a gem of a Christmas cantata, rarely performed by church choirs because of its technical challenges. Respighi, who was

largely an instrumental com-poser, mixes Italian, French, and Russian styles of music into this 25-minute musical set-ting of the Nativity story. The result is a wonderfully eclectic mix of Romantic styles and a lush, moving musical experi-ence.

"Sing the Songs of Bethlehem" is a collection of mostly traditional Christmas carols in a "Lessons and Carols" sort of format, scored for adult choir, childrens choir, handbells, orchestra, and con-gregation.

Southminster presents musical celebration December 18

You don't want to miss this beautiful Christmas musical celebration, so mark your cal-endars for Sun., Dec.18.

Foster’s Addison Marshall a finalist for Rudy Awardwas featured along with the other 11 finalists in the December 11 edition of Parade Magazine.

The Rudy Awards celebrates inspirational young athletes who embody the values of character, courage, contribution and commitment through the sport of football. ists, who will also receive an autographed Rudy #45 jersey. A national selection committee, along with a fan vote, chooses the scholarship recipients and final Rudy Award Winner. The nation's most inspirational player will receive a $7,500 scholarship.

Austin High School Thespians win big at competitionAustin High School perform-

ers made a name for themselves as they snagged several spots at the Texas Thespian State Festival and will go on to compete at nationals this summer. The Texas Thespian Festival 2011 the event

was held December 1- 3 at George R. Brown Convention Center.

These students qualified for Nationals from this event: Ben Rauls -Duet Acting, Courtney Russell-Duet Acting, Kara

Crawford -Duet Musical, David Herrera -Duet Musical, and Erin Lavespere -Costume Design. One AHS student received the highest honor of being cast in the All-State Show, Coram Boy, directed by Luis Munos: Bradley Smith.

In pursuit of a career beyond high school, Rachel Kossar and Nora Hunt auditioned and received call backs and scholar-ship offers from more than 20 colleges, which is well above average.

Mrs. Jennifer J. Minor, the-ater teacher at AHS said. “The Thespians at Austin High School flexed their talent at the state festival. We are so proud of each and every one of them and we’d like you to know who to con-gratulate for rising above and continuing the tradition of excel-lence in our department.”

“These kinds of opportuni-ties, such as the Thespian State

Festival provide opportunities for life-long learning,” Brad Cummons, also a theater teach-er at Austin High School, said. “Even if they’re not majoring in theater, students are able to benefit from the preparation techniques and the rigor of the performance.”

The national competition will take place in June in Lincoln, Nebraska. The students will have their talents evaluated once again, but on a larger scale as they go head to head with others across the country and abroad. But you do not need to wait till then to see these amaz-ing thespians; Austin Fine Arts Department presents the longest running show Off-Broadway - The Fantasticks! - January 20, 21, 27 & 28 at 7 pm.
