(*Please stand, as you are able) Processional Hymn: This lively text was written by Herbert Frederick Brokering, for the 90 th Anniversary of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Echoing Psalm 98, it is a prime example of a 20 th - century hymn style based on phrases rather than complete sentences. The exuberant tune, composed by David N. Johnson, was created expressly for this text. Choral Introit: These two stanzas are drawn from a much longer hymn created for the processional at an English choir festival in 1865. The original text lacked the refrain which imparts so much energy to this hymn text. The composer of the tune, Richard Wayne Dirksen (d. 2003), an American church musician and composer, served as Choirmaster and Organist of Washington National Cathedral. Hymn God of theSparrow: Though a lackof punctuation makesthis text appearfreeform and theflowing tune enhances asense of movement, each stanza is firmlyanchored by a finalsignificant word (praise, save, thanks, life, peacehome), a sign of God’spresence in an ever-changing world.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Declaration of Faith) Dr. Perzavia PraylowGod created and rules in love. God created all the worlds that are and upholds

and rules everything. We affirm that the universe exists by the power of God’sWord and Spirit. God has chosen to give it reality out of the love we have come toknow in Christ.

God still works through the processes that shape and change the earth and theliving things upon it. We acknowledge God’s care and control in the regularity ofthe universe as well as in apparently random happenings. There is no event fromwhich God is absent and his ultimate purpose in all events is just and loving. Thatpurpose embraces our choices and will surely be accomplished. The Creator worksin all things toward the new creation that is promised in Christ. Amen.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP Dr. Praylow(Please sign and pass the Ritual of Friendship Register at this time

so that we might know your concerns and keep you informedabout the life and ministry of this community of faith.)

The text is byFrancis Kinmelwershe(c. 1540 – c. 1580)about whom little isknown.

Processional Hymn: Inthe course of manyrevisions, the originaleucharistic emphasis ofthis text has shifted to ahymn of thanksgivingfor a wide range ofhuman experience. It isset to the tune that iscustomary in NorthAmerica, though notelsewhere. The text isaltered from FolliottSandford Pierpoint, andthe tune composed byConrad Kocher, asharmonized in TheEnglish Hymnal.

Is your church a rowboat church or a sailboat church? Rowboat churches depend largely on human effort. When church budgets and membership numbersstagnate, rowboat churches frantically row harderagainst a current, often frustrated and disappointed attheir efforts. Sailboat churches, on the other hand, takeup the oars, hoist sails, and rely on the Holy Spirit to guidethem.Arguing that churches should be "sailboats," Joan S. Grayencourages readers to shift concern from the many daily, practical concerns of their local church to fresh ideas thatcan be found using the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thebook includes forty days of sailing prayers, quotes fromScripture, brief reflection questions, and an extensivebibliography that is arranged by theme. Perfect forgroups to read together, this book will help leaders re-frame their church's mission and practice with the HolySpirit as their guide.
