At state he had to win 1st place out of the 34 competitors to be selected to serve as an officer.

The competition consisted of four parts: an objective test over DECA facts, a written press release, a 1-minute self-introduction, and a interview from a panel of judges from business and industry.

Hariket will be attending training throughout the school year and will represent Fostoria and the state of Ohio by presiding and participating in the State and National Conferences.

For the second year in a row, we are proud to have a Fostoria DECA member representing us as a state officer. Hariket Bilodia was selected to serve as the Public Relations officer for Ohio DECA.

So, how does one earn the right to serve in this capacity? First Hariket competed at the District level at Bowling Green State University. After many positive comments from judges, and a first place spot, Hariket decided to advance to the state competition to compete among each of the 11 districts’ top competitors.

Bilodia Earns Public Relations State Officer Position

On Thursday, November 19th, 10 Fostoria DECA members boarded a charter bus, along with students from other area DECA chapters (Lima, Vanguard, and Port Clinton).

After about 9 hours of getting to know each other and several movies later, students were ready to embark on a great experience. Since we arrived late, students got checked in and basically went to bed so that they were

ready for a morning of site seeing before the conference began.

Early the next morning students were ready to visit the Money Museum, World War I Museum (the only one in the country) and the Hallmark Visitor’s Center. At the money museum students observed currency throughout history and even got to make money with their face on it. The museum was an awesome display and description of the

events leading up to and during and after World War I. They didn’t really know they would get a history lesson on the trip, but we snuck it in. Finally the Hallmark Visitor’s Center offered a glimpse into how an American company became successful.

Following the tours, students got ready for the conference to begin later that evening. They would listen to very engaging speakers and participate in educational workshops of their choosing. Students could also visit vendors of fundraising items and local and national college tables throughout the conference.

It wasn’t long after returning that students were asking when our next trip would be. Thank you to all of our sponsors that supported our students as some would not be able to attend without their support.

Students Travel to Kansas City for Leadership Conference

The Red Zone, owned and operated by DECA members, began in the 2005-06 school year. The store opened with $76 and a strong desire to be successful. The business was created to allow marketing students to apply what they learn in the classroom and to provide the student body with school supplies and spirit apparel. The Red Zone stocks tee shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts, pants, lanyards, wristbands, and many other spirited items.

This year the Red Zone received a small face lift as the students freshened up the store with new paint. In addition students expanded

their target customer by promoting to the other buildings within Fostoria City Schools. Students sold over 100 Fostoria tie-dyed tees to students, staff, and community members.

Another way that the Red Zone obtains more customers is by attending all home football and basketball games and by setting up shop at parent-teacher conferences and other school events.

Students have been very involved in the promotional process as they have developed fliers, posters, public address announcements, and a catalog. They have also made decisions about product styles, colors, and prices. Not only does the Red Zone serve as a fundraiser, but it provides a great deal of hands on learning. Students get to see marketing concepts and strategies in action.
