Our CJHS DECA

team performed

exceptionally once

again this

year! Our students

showed

professionalism,

enthusiasm and

poise as they went

up against other

North Suburban

schools in the

annual regional

conference. Among

the 20 students on

our team, eight

finished with

medals (awarded for top 3 scores in each

event), and CJHS earned 17 medals overall--

one more than last year! Team coach Mr.

Baumstark reports, "We had nice

representation across all the classes, which

was great to see. There is no doubt in my

mind that our school by far had the most medals ' per capita' of any school there.

Building Bridges

For the

first

time in

years,

CJHS

sent two

bridges

to the

Chicago

Regional

Bridge

Building

competit

ion at

IIT!

Junior

champio

n Seth

Wein

produce

d a very

tall and slender bridge with a middle deck

which eschewed horizontal crossbars to

reduce weight and improve efficiency; his

structure supported 133 times its own weight

before breaking a strut. Senior champions

Ruli Warner-Rosen and Jacob Erlichman

went for the lightest of lightweight designs;

their bridge made the short list and placed

33rd in the North Suburban finals! Many

congratulations to master builder Ruli and all

our finalists; congrats to our line buddies Jeff

Kroll of Illiana Christian High School, who

placed 34th in the South Suburban division

and to Elizabeth Khouri of Mother McAuley,

who placed 6th in the city division!

Senior Interns

With our seniors

back in residence,

we also welcome

back our stateside

interns! While Ruli

Warner-Rosen was

hard at work on his

architecture project,

senior Sari Mishell

spent three weeks

working for the JNF,

while Gavi

Schankerman

interned at the

corporate Walgreens

office right here in

Northbrook. Back in

school, Gavi

explains, "I can

better understand how such a very large

company works, as well as get perspective on

what I want to focus on in the future career-

wise."

This Week in Jewish Studies

Rabbi Belgrad's sophomore Bible class is in

the midst of a lively discussion: is a mitzva

more powerful or meaningful if you know the

reason behind it? Overwhelming opinion in

the

class

respond

s that it

is,

citing

that a

mitzva

perform

ed by a

person

who

knows

the

reason they are doing it is done with more

sincerity and intention and thus is more

meaningful! Detractors of this view question

Page 6: Deca competes

humanity's right to demand reasons from

God--or to understand them sufficiently when

given. Another voice in the exchange is the

classical midrash, noting that King Solomon

himself was too confident in his own

understanding of God's reasons, allowing

himself a bit too much leeway to behave

exactly as he pleased to the detriment of the

entire kingdom!

Mr. Goldstein's freshman Talmud class is

engaged in a similar conversation about the

av melachot for Shabbat: what can't one do

on Shabbat and why? When is refraining

from certain actions restful and when are the

restrictions more tiresome than the

work? When does one's personal desire to

rest cause more work to others? Stay tuned for the 39 Talmudic results!

This Week in Sports

The Tigers are

back in

business! Despit

e basketball

clinics in Israel

with international

superstar Tamir

Goodman, our

varsity team is

having a rough

start to the

semester, with

tough losses to

Hinckley-Big Rock and the Skokie

Yeshiva. The sophomores lost by 11 points

to Hinckley on Wednseday. Coach Fiol

reports, "We had the lead going into 4th

quarter, and Hinckley had a nice run. Felix

Rosen and Adam Gilman have been playing

very well, with Gilman leading the team in

rebounding and Rosen leading in steals!"

Page 7: Deca competes

The Lady Tigers have

had a busy week,

with three games

virtually back to back

to back. They played

Sunday at Christ the

King and held their

own, despite having

only six players on

the court. Even the

opposing coach

noticed thier

improvement! Back

on the home court on

Tuesday, Emily

Reisler and Arielle

Saxton led the

Tigers to victory against Ellison, 32-21.

Wednesday night, the team hit the road to

take on St. Benedict. Coach Forde reports,

"As our season nears the end one thing you

can't help but to notice is the girls are getting

better! Our conference tournament starts

Monday, when we rematch against Christ the

King! This time will have more than six

players, and you'd better believe we will fight

till the end!" Go Tigers!

At the JV level, E-News heartily apologizes to

freshman correspondent Alan Sydel for

misspelling his name in last week's edition!

The Ten-Pin Tigers are closing out their

season! Join everyone next Thursday,

February 5 at Brunswick Zone in Deerfield

from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. to bowl a few rounds

in our annual Family/Staff bowling

invitational! RSVP to Dr. Auslander so he can

make sure to have enough donuts.

Discussion

Second Person Singular, by

Sayed Kashua. A Palestinian

who writes in Hebrew, Sayed

Kashua defies classification

Singular is a gripping tale of

love and betrayal, honesty

and artifice, which asks

whether it is possible to truly

reinvent ourselves, to shed

our old skin and start anew.

Wednesday, March 18, doors open at

7:00 p.m.

Join us for a baking

demonstration and

tasting by renowned

cookbook author,

Paula Shoyer. The

Alumni Trivia

Josh Perry

('12) is

majoring in

film at

Northweste

rn

University, where his first film is now in post-

production. Josh wrote, directed, edited, and

produced Speed-waiting (a comedy about a

guy who sees his ex-girlfriend at a speed-

dating event), with help from his trusty

assistant producer Yadid Licht ('14). The

film was shot right here in Evanston; look

closely in the background when the film is

done in February, and you'll see J.P's

dedicated extras Alec Cohen ('12), Jeff

Budweg ('12), senior Josh Kaplinsky, and

senior Elan Karroll!

Page 12: Deca competes

Seasoned alumni trivia buffs may also have

fond memories of Film Gone Wrong, written

and produced by Daniel Bier ('06) and

starring Renana Fox ('06). Dan is now a

contractor at Raytheon Missile Defense

Systems in Boston, while Renana is an

educational theater specialist at Kaiser

Permanente in Washington D.C. and the

critics' darling on stage and in the director's

chair at various D.C. theaters.

A Taste of Torah: BeShalach

The race is on! Once again, Pharaoh has released the Israelites from bondage. And once again,

Pharaoh has changed his mind. Yet at the beginning of this week's Parashat BeShalach, in

the midst of fleeing an oppressor that will certainly kill him and his

Page 13: Deca competes

people, Moshe stops along the way to

fulfill a promise that his ancestors left unfulfilled several

generations prior. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Moshe diverts his route to gather the bones of Yoseph to take them

to bury in the Land of Israel.... ...This week, we commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. As educators, we continually think about what it means to take the bones of our ancestors with us into the future. We celebrate both individual lives

and the lives of communities. During this week's nexus of our parasha and Jewish history, may we carry the legacy of the lost European communities to our modern communities, and may the fire of Torah that existed there continue to crackle in new ways in our lives as Americans.
