Finally, The Gauchos Get The BananaUCSBs win at the University of San Diego on Tuesday night came by the score of 65-61. Thegame was actually closer than that...sort of. Orlando Johnson was fouled intentionally with 0.6seconds left and made both free throws for the nal margin. The win was the Gauchos rst

close-call victory of the year and it came on the heels of consecutive heart-breaking losses whenthey were close, but didnt seize the banana. On Nov. 26, UCSB lost a 76-75 overtime gameto visiting San Diego State. On Nov. 30, UCSB lost to then-No. 18 UNLV in two overtimes94-88. The game against the Runnin Rebels was just the third multi-overtime game that a Bob

Williams-coached Santa Barbara team has played and the rst since an 89-80 win at Pepperdineon Nov. 21, 2006. On Dec. 6, 2000, UCSB defeated San Diego State in three overtimes, 80-67That game was the longest in school histor y. Others have seemed longer, but that one trulywas.

First Blowouts, Then Close CallsUCSB won its rst four games (Chapman, Santa Clara, Westmont and Portland) by a combined94 points, 23.5 per game. The last three games have been a different story. The largest marginof the three a 94-88 loss to UNLV came in double overtime. Overall, in the last three, thecombined margins of victory (two wins by the opponents and one by the Gauchos) was 11points, an average of 3.7 per game.

    Playing The Percentages

UCSB had a better eld goal percentage in each of its rst four games this season. In games veand six, however, the Gauchos made just a total of 54 out of 135 shots from the oor, 40.0%and were outshot by San Diego State and UNLV. On Tuesday, they turned that stat back into aplus by making 24-of-48 shots, 50.0%, while the University of San Diego hit just 21-of-57, 36.8%.It was the fth time in seven games that UCSB has made at least 47.3% of its shots and, perhapsmore importantly, it was the fth time in seven contests that an opponent has been below the40.0% mark. In the other two games, Gaucho opponents made 40.5% and 45.8%.

Let Freedom RingThe Gauchos are making a season-high 71.3% of their free throws this season. In Tuesdays atSan Diego, they made 12-of-14 shots from the line for a season-best 85.7%. After making 76out of 111 free throw attempts in the rst four games, UCSB has taken it up a notch in the last

three games as it has made 51 out of 67 attempts, 76.1%. In 2010-11, free throw shooting wasone of the teams real strengths as it made 459-of-610, 75.2%, a single-season gure that ranks

tied for fth in school history.

The OpponentsUCSB and Washington have played just twice and theHuskies won both games. The teams met on Dec. 17,1981 in Santa Barbara and the score was 71-62 and

then again in Seattle on Dec. 21, 1982 and the nalwas 76-55. The Gauchos and Cal have played sevengames since 1948 with the Golden Bears winningall seven. The last time the teams met was in thechampionship game of the Golden Bear Classic onDec. 29, 2009 and Cal won that one, 87-66.

The Gauchos On The RoadThe Gauchos opened their road schedule on Dec.13 with a 65-61 win at the University of San Diegoand are now, prepare yourself, 1-0 on the road thisseason. In 2010-11, they were 5-8 in true road gamesand 9-10 in all games away from the Thunderdome.UCSB lost its last three true road games last season, dropping decisions at Long Beach State, Cal StateNorthridge and UC Irvine.

BlockheadsThrough seven games, UCSB has 45 blocked shots,

an average of 6.4 per. Senior Greg Somogyi , who isverging on the No. 2 spot on the schools all-timecareer list, leads the way with 17, 2.4 per game. Infact, Somogyi has 17 in just 86 minutes this season. After four games, the Gauchos had 17 blocked shots,4.2 per game, but in the last three games they have

turned away 28 opponent attempts, 9.3 per game. They recorded a season-high 11 blocked shots in

two of the last three games, Nov. 26 vs. San DiegoState and Dec. 13 at the University of San Diego. The 11 blocks rank as the sixth most in UCSB histo-ry. In the game at USD, Jaim Serna tied his career-high with ve blocks. In 2010-11, The Gauchos seta school record with 133 swats, an average of 4.1per game. Currently, they are on pace to surpass

    that mark.

A Historical Margin For WilliamsUCSBs 89-56 win over Santa Clara on Dec. 15 set astandard for a Bob Williams-coached Gaucho team. The 33-point margin of victory was the widest since

Williams arrived in Santa Barbara for the 1998-99season. Prior to the 33-point win over the Broncos,

the largest margin in the last 13 seasons -plus was32 in an 88-56 win at Montana State on Nov. 13,2006. The last time any UCSB team had a margin aslarge as 33 was on Dec. 6, 1997 in a 92-50 win overSan Francisco State, a Division II program. Againsta Division I opponent it goes back to Feb. 11, 1993when the Gauchos beat Nevada, 93-60. That sameseason, on Dec. 19, 1992, they blasted St. Marys on

    the road, 79-37.
