As the holidays approach, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for those times when you’ll be faced
with tough decisions revolving around food – and you know it will happen. All holidays are celebrated with food in our country. This can lead to some situations when
you’ll more than likely to make some decisions that will make controlling your blood sugar levels difficult. Philip Barnett, M.D., Ph.D. from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has some tips
help you navigate those family meals and holiday parties.
Regular exercise is a great way to control blood sugar. Keep up your regular exercise
routine even during the holidays. If you don’t have time to spare, try taking 10-15 minute
walks throughout the day.
Attending a dinner party sometimes means eating later than we’re used to. Try
eating a snack before leaving home to make sure you don’t get too hungry and then eat
things you should maybe avoid.
It’s ok to indulge; after all it is a holiday! Be sure to save those indulgences for special
foods and avoid overeating on every day foods like chips or crackers. Be certain to eat
small portions.
Focus on the veggie and fruit platters at parties, filling up on those things that are less
likely to spike your blood sugar.
Drink water and diet sodas. Consume alcohol in moderation and be sure to eat
something with your alcoholic drink.
Check your blood sugar regularly and never skip meals.
Keep your meals balanced and nutritious. If you have a treat you should substitute it
for something else that is normally on your plate. Ie: leave the roll and have a cookie
instead.
Finally, ―Be positive. Remember that you control your diabetes; it doesn't control you.‖
Join Dr. Heimerl with Advanced Family Chiropractic for a free Lunch & Learn on Monday, December 15th at 11:00am. Dr. Heimerl will be speaking about natural immunity.
It is not the infection that causes us to become sick, it is how our body handles it. We come in contact with viruses, bacteria and other infections on a daily basis. The condition of your
body (the soil) determines what foreign bodies (the seed) can affect you. There are natural ways to enhance your soil, come find out how!
Pre-registration is necessary and can be done by calling 652-0116. Space is limited.

Our Lakeshore Senior Pedalers completed another successful biking season starting in May and
concluding in the middle of October. We averaged 8-9 riders each time and we pedaled over 3,700
miles as a group.
Our travels took us to many points of interest, including cheese factories, historical museums, the
rolling rapids of the Lower Cato Falls, the beautiful flower beds on the Maritime Trail along Lake
Michigan, and the rambling trails following the Fox River and the Ahnapee River. We relished the picturesque farmlands, observed green beans being harvested by machinery, and faced the gusty winds and occasional rain showers. New friendships blossomed as new bikers
joined our senior group. We are looking forward to another year of biking in 2015! Watch for our organizational meeting held in April at the Senior Center!
I sincerely thank all of our senior bikers for such a great season! ~ Joyce Morrison
Lakeshore Pedalers take a break at the Friendship Trail in Brillion.
WHY Bike? For most seniors, retirement and trying to improve your health go hand in hand. One of the best
things you can do to stave off heart disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases is to hop on a bike. Bicycling
is FUN! And it doesn't have to be a chore like your average exercise program. You can do it nearly anywhere. Best of all, to boost your health benefits with a regular biking program, you don't have to become a complete
fanatic. A bike ride of decent length a few times per week will give you all the health benefits you require with-
out going to the gym! Consider joining the Lakeshore Pedalers next season! Watch in spring for more details.
Friday, December 19th @ 1:30pm

ol’ days. Please sign up by stopping at the front office or calling 686-3060.

The Annual Senior Center Holiday Fair held on November 8, 2014 turned
out to be another wonderful affair which raised nearly $2,700.00 (this amount does not include the raffle tickets still being sold). We couldn’t have done this without the efforts of all our wonderful, hard
working volunteers; from bakers, crafters, and servers, to kitchen help, cashiers and all the volunteers and members of the Senior Crafts, Weaving, Watercolor, the
Gift Shop, Library and Bake Sale. You all did a tremendous job to make our largest fundraiser another success. The Silver Memories and the Young at Heart Line Dancers did a great job
entertaining as always, and Alan James sang and played guitar and harmonica in the lobby, which all added to the festivities. Thank you all very much for your hard work and dedication to making this
event special. Thank you to all who helped spread the word either by posting posters or dis-playing yard signs! All efforts, big or small, help make the fair what it is! We could not do
this without you! ~ Penny
Looking ahead to next year, it’s never too late to volunteer. We can always use bread
bakers, volunteers to distribute posters at area grocery stores and businesses, a volunteer to head our bake sale (or maybe co-chair with someone), volunteers to help make soup and
chili and serve food the day of the event, etc. If you can help out, please contact Penny at 686-3063.

Manitowoc Senior Center is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a
leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on 12/8/2014. Five screenings will be offered
that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular
heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member
discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

WINTER WEATHER REMINDER In the event of bad weather please listen to your radio. We
will announce Closings and Cancellations for the Manitowoc Senior Center and Recreation Department on WOMT (1240 AM) and WCUB (980 AM).
In the event of inclement weather, cancellations may also be checked by calling our cancellation hotline at 686-3595.
(Please note that this line is updated when the weather is questionable and not on a daily basis). Meals on Wheels are cancelled if the Manitowoc Public Schools are closed.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET STRANDED
Staying in your vehicle when stranded is often the safest choice if winter storms create poor visibility or if roadways are ice covered. These steps will increase your safety when stranded:
Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers and raise the hood of the car (if it is not snowing) Move anything you need from the trunk into the passenger area
Wrap your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers Stay awake. You will be less vulnerable to cold-related heath problems Run the motor (and heater) for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly
to let in air. Make sure that snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe—this will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning
As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to improve your circulation and stay warmer Do not eat unmelted snow because it will lower your body
temperature Huddle with other people for warmth

The Lakeshore Red Hatters met on November 14th for our monthly tea. The hostesses were Mary
Ann Preston, JoAnn Fischer and Berdeva Fischer. They served a delicious lunch and then we played rousing games of Bingo. Winners of the Bingo games were Diane Cisler, Gloria Mankins, Terry Prigge, Bonnie Willems, Denise Beyer, Elma Castro and Dorothy Baker won blackout. I know I am missing one winner and I apologize for not knowing who it is. Let me know and I will put it in next months newsletter. The door prize winners were Marilyn Neumeyer, Bonnie Willems, Barb Zipperer, Viola Vogel, and Dorothy Baker. Congratulations ladies. We had a nice lunch at Wisco-Tech for November. We had a very nice turnout. The food was real good and the company was better. The hostesses for December are Barb Zipperer, Viola Vogel and Berdeva Fischer. They organized the Christmas Luncheon for December 12
th, at Silver Valley. We will meet at about 11:30a and we will
eat at 12:00p. The cost is $17.50 and that includes two meats, dessert, tax and tip. If you did not sign up and pay, call Barb Zipperer at 775-4800 to make arrangements. The hostess list for 2015 will be the same as 2014, with a few changes. We did not have any birth-days in November. Berdeva is going to be gone for the January and February Teas. She nominated Kathy Fischer to be her assistant queen. Congratulations Cathy.
Funny Bone Ticklers A Red Hatter was looking at pies offered by a nearby café. They had cherry, apple, berry, peach and Herman’s. She asked the waitress “What kind of pie is Herman’s?” “Apple.” She said. “Then why is it called Herman’s pie?” The waitress explained, “Because he call in to reserve it.” Have a fun Red Hat Day,
Terry
