Husky Nation,
It is beginning to look a lot like, a much-needed break for all! The month of
November was a long month with few breaks, besides the weekends. The first term
is completed and report cards were sent home. Well done to the students who met
their academic goals and everyone who put their best effort into their studies
should be proud, not to mention all their supports as well. I hope that everyone
works hard to make the latter half of semester one a success.
Husky athletics is busy. The volleyball season recently came to a conclusion. The
FNSS Girls Huskies did not travel to tournaments, but practiced hard the past
months. They were able to end their season with games in front of the school. The
highlight? Taking on the FNSS staff team. If you were lucky to watch, there was
some great action. The scores were close, with the staff edging the teams. Well done
to the students and coaches, Ms. Gardam and Ms. Forsyth, on their season! Athletes
remember to hit up the beaches (get your shovels out) over the off season to keep
them skills sharp! Before we know it, the FNSS Track and Field team will be
The FNSS Boys and Girls basketball teams’ season started in mid-November. There
is a home tournament scheduled for the weekend of December 14th and 15th. Come
on out to cheer on our Huskies! Keep your eyes out for more information about a
3on3 basketball fundraiser scheduled for December 8th.
The next weeks will go by quickly. The Friends of Rachel Group with the guidance
from Ms. Reddy, will be collecting non-perishable items as part of their annual food
drive. Staff and students are encouraged to bring items that will be collected during
block C between December 3rd to 14th.
The FNSS band program will be performing holidays classics and other songs
during the evening of Wednesday, December 5th at 7pm at The Phoenix Theatre. I
hope to hear the delightful song, Hot Cross Buns.
Last day of school is Wednesday, December 19th. Everyone returns on Monday,
January 7th, 2019. The FNSS community wants to wish everyone a great holiday and
hope it is full of great memories.

The Grade 8 classes were also trying their hands at
First Nation art with beading. One class of 8's worked
on bead looming; many turned their pieces into
braclets by sewing it onto stroud. The other class did
beading on moose hide coloured stroud to create
beautiful nature inspired images. Students struggled
through the process but many were very happy with
the end result!
The Grade 9 Art class got a lesson on one of the many
traditional BC First Nations groups: the Haida. Stu-
dents learned the basic shapes before creating masks
out of plaster cast material and then painting them
with acrylic paint. Students were really excited to get
there hands dirty and try a new technique they had
never done before.
The Grade 10-12 Art Class focused their inquiry pro-
ject on, "What makes art great?" With the help of Ms.
Larson in the library, they were able to pick out an
artist that stood out to them and had the opportunity
to recreate that piece. Art pieces ranged from street
artists to master painters. All the students spent quali-
ty time on their art and it shows!!

The Foods 9/10 class has been busy this
past month. After recuperating from the
Cupcake Wars, the students did a unit
on Indigenous foods. The end result
was a feast that was created with
consultation from a local Elder, Mrs.
Sutherland. It turned out amazing.
As the holidays draw near, the class is
getting into the spirt by making
gingerbread houses. Using templates for
the houses, the students made their own
dough from scratch as well as the icing.
They look and smell delicious!

Foods 11/12
The Foods 11/12 class has been busy as
well. Not to be out done by the Cupcake
Wars, the class held Cake Wars. They all
looked amazing!
Grade 11 and 12 students also had a feast of
their own. Under the guidance of Kanta
Reddy, the students made a Traditional
Indian Feast. All of our chefs in training will
have no problem cooking for themselves
once they venture out on their own.

Student Opportunities
Would you describe any number of your students as leaders,
achievers, or innovators? Do they have limitless drive, ambition, and
determination? If so, you should know there’s an exciting opportunity
for them to receive a $25,000 prize towards their post-secondary
education!
Founded in 2016, the STEAM Horizon Awards invite Canada’s youth to promote positive changes throughout their
community using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).
Five Canadian students will be awarded $25,000 each, to attend a Canadian university or college to study in a STEAM field.
Two of these awards will be given to Indigenous students. The winners will be invited to Ottawa and recognized at an award
ceremony in April 2019.
More information about the prize program and how to apply can be found at steamhorizonawards.ca. The deadline for
applications is January 16, 2019 – share this opportunity with your students today!
