Research and Development TMA and Research and Development To continue to promote our drive to raise the profile of Research and Development across the Alliance here is some information about the latest research from the Sutton Trust . What makes great teaching? The Sutton Trust have just completed a review of what makes great teaching using over 200 pieces of re-search to identify how best to improve attainment. Interestingly some of our common practices have no grounding in research. Common practices that are not supported by evidence include: Use praise lavishly Allow students to discover key ideas by themselves

Group by ability Teaching according to learning styles However, the two factors that have the strongest evidence of improving pupil attainment are not surprising to anyone in education: Teachers’ knowledge, including their ability to understand how students

think about a subject and common misunderstandings. Quality of teaching including strategies such as effective questioning and use of assessment. For the full report go to http://www.suttontrust.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/What-makes-great-teaching-FINAL-4.11.14.pdf How do we improve the learning of teachers? How often do we think about how teachers learn and what are we doing to help them to teach well? Our focus on the students sometimes leads us to forget that biggest impact on students is the quality of teaching and in order to help teachers teach better there needs to be continual reflection and learning. The problem is a lack of time to do quality learning for teachers. Research shows that the best way for teachers to learn is working alongside other teachers focusing on practice in the classroom. Lee Elliot Major who is the Direct of Development and Policy at the Sutton Trust has just posted a blog outlining the most important things that teachers should know from the Sutton Trust research. His summary can be found - http://www.suttontrust.com/newsarchive/improving-the-learning-of-teachers/

There is huge pressure on schools and colleges to improve the quality of teaching and create better learn-ing outcomes for young people. Research shows that the most effective way to achieve these goals, while also improving staff morale and engagement, is through high quality professional development. However, while this is easy to accept, it is very hard to implement. The National Teacher Enquiry Network has been created to support organisations that are facing up to these challenges. It is a collaborative partnership of schools and colleges focused on innovation and im-provement through highly effective and evidence-based staff professional development and learning. It has been developed alongside schools, in consultation with experts, through a series of pilots supported by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and the National Union of Teachers. NTEM members shape and develop the work and are committed to the principle of peer-to-peer support. Read more about the National Teacher Enquiry Network

Post-ITT SKE (Subject Knowledge Enhancement)

Courses 2015

The Background

For the past two years, NCTL has funded universities to deliver post-ITT SKE courses. These courses were

designed to increase the knowledge of in-service teachers that did not train in the subject they teach.

This funding stopped at the end of financial year 2013-14, and for the financial year 2014-15, NCTL is run-

ning a grant-funded test and learn project with a small group of Teaching School Alliances to develop and

deliver a range of post-ITT SKE provision in shortage subjects, aimed at meeting local and regional capaci-

ty needs.

The Millais Alliance, in collaboration with the University of Brighton, has developed three courses in

Maths, Physics and Computer Science. These were the areas where we saw greatest need.

The Outline

Each course will be a blended-learning programme of four face-to-face intensive training days on Fridays

and Saturdays, interspersed with specifically written online modules. These modules will be designed to

focus on the content which specialist teachers have the most difficulty in teaching. The online modules

will be accessed through the University VLE which the participants will be enrolled on. In addition, they

will have access to university resource materials and library facilities to support their learning.

Initially the Post-ITT SKE courses will not be officially accredited by the university but, looking ahead, we

would seek to achieve this as an end goal.

The CPD

Delegates will:

Develop competence and confidence in the subject area to enable them to teach the subject effec-

tively at KS3 & 4, or move from KS3 to KS4

Develop awareness of learners’ needs in the subject area including common misconceptions and

difficulties

CPD

Page 5: Dec 2014 update - The Millais Alliance · Teachmeet feedback. 2. Research and Development. ... GoodPDGuide, launched in January 2012, is a free database of high-quality professional

5

The Detail

The course will cost £250 for maintained schools, £500 for academies and independent schools.

Schools will be expected to fund supply and travel costs.

Delegates are not expected to be teaching in the subject they wish to train in, but their school must

expect to provide access to lesson observations in that subject for the duration of the course.

There will be 12 hours of self-supported study between face-to-face days which may include some

observations of lessons taught by experienced colleagues. This equates to roughly two hours a

week, and is intended to complement the course material and face-to-face sessions.

Face-to-face sessions will take place at the School of Education, UOB, based at Falmer.

The last contact date will be Friday 24th July; this will also be the final submission date for any course assignments

Pre-course reading will also be issued.

Dates will be:

There are still places available but the early spring term start date means that we must confirm num-

bers. Book now for a place by contacting Caroline Carroll [email protected]

Sussex Science Learning Centre

We started this year with a scientific boost by hosting a very successful launch event in

September, which incorporated free Primary and Secondary CPD sessions on the new cur-

riculum. In addition to raising the profile of the Sussex SLP and explaining how it evolved,

it gave us the opportunity to ask attendees what they were looking for in terms of effective

science CPD, and at what times of day.

The Spring courses are, we hope, a reflection of that expressed need, but please do feed-

back if there is a CPD subject we are not addressing.

Teacher-Presenters needed

The SLP model is to offer subject-specific Science CPD that is presented by teachers for

teachers. Our next step is to build a bank of teacher-presenters to fulfil that model –

those teachers who have already delivered for us have said that delegates place great val-

ue on the fact that their presenter is still in the classroom.

If you are interested in presenting, please contact Caroline Carroll for further details. We

are especially short of Primary presenters in both East and West Sussex.

Caroline Carroll is able to give fur-

ther details on bookings and any-

thing else SLP. Please contact her

on [email protected]

or 01403 267890.

PRIMARY COURSES

Science continuous professional development bursaries Bursaries (known as Impact Awards and Enthuse Awards) are available to science teachers and techni-cians for continuous professional development (CPD) activities delivered by the National Science Learn-ing Network. This includes regional science learning centres and Science Learning Partnerships. The bur-saries can be used to contribute to covering the cost of CPD fees, or in any other way that your school believes will help to improve the teaching of science. The bursaries aim to support teachers and technicians to enhance their professional skills and help to inspire pupils by providing a more stimulating and exciting science education. In order to receive an award, teachers or technicians need to be working in a state funded school or college, including main-tained schools, academies and free schools. Impact Awards currently attract a bursary equivalent to 50% of the CPD fee paid while the value of the Enthuse Award varies per course. In order to apply you must submit an impact follow-up form from between 6 to 16 weeks after your CPD activity. Awards are limited and funding is subject to availability. Anyone is eligible to apply for an Impact Award when they sign up to an SLP course – you pay the full price initially, and then complete an impact evaluation six weeks after the course has run in order to trigger this award .

SEND—COMPASS HUB Update

COMPASS Hub has had a busy term. Following on from the findings of our pilot stage and supported by some DfE development funding from the Millais Alliance, our focus has been on training and staff development.

The audit we carried out earlier in the year indicated that the primary areas of need for the Horsham schools (and other SEND Hubs report similar findings) are: Social Com-munication & Autistic Spectrum Condition; Specific Learn-ing Difficulties; Speech, Language and Communication Needs; and Social, Emotional, Behavioural needs (including mental health).

Our aim is to develop a training programme to offer essential training to staff in schools and settings in-cluding: an introductory stage training for these four areas in the Autumn Term and an intermediate stage ‘Further Strategies to Support…..’ in the spring term that can be repeated annually. We have also included a Disability Awareness course offered by Enable Me, a Littlehampton based charity and a Team Teach training Day. It is hoped there will be a first aid course, administering medicines, and a child pro-tection one in due course to complete the package.

As well as the ‘essential training for all staff in SEND’ series we are hosting additional events and short courses includ-ing: Aspects of Autism, (Lego Therapy, Sensory Sensitivi-ties); Anti-Bullying (Anti-Bullying week event and cyber bullying), Supporting Children through Bereavement, Anxi-ety Issues and IT resources to support learners with SpLDs.

All the courses are in and around Horsham, but not exclu-sively for Horsham schools. They will be advertised through eP-D, but can be booked independently too if you contact the office. We are experimenting with timings. We have held twilight sessions to support learners with ASC and SLCNs and some courses during the day with sessions for TAs in the mornings and for Teachers in the afternoons. We acknowledge the tensions between needing a skilled workforce and being able to release staff from their roles in sup-porting children who need them to be in school – any feedback on this welcome.

Some SEND Hubs are being funded by subscription from the schools in their locality, but in Horsham there are already successful locality groups working together to provide support for their schools and so COMPASS@QE11 is funded by the training we can offer or through being commissioned for specific piec-es of work or on-going services by negotiation. We aim to work collaboratively with the localities to avoid repetition or competition and schools, SALT, OT, Horsham Nursery and parents are represented on the steering Group that meets termly. There is a development officer who works for the Hub one-two days a week (as needed) and co-ordinates the training programme, (Jane Cross) Jane is happy to attend meetings or visit schools to discuss our work further on request. We can be contacted through QE11school or by e-mail: [email protected] Jane Cross COMPASS@QE11 @compasshub Development Officer

School Direct—TMA update School Direct is growing year on year and is being heavily promoted by the Department of Education, es-pecially in shortage subjects. Bursaries for Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science Training places have risen to £25,000 this year for those with a 2.1 or above; schools with Salaried places in the same subjects had a £6000 uplift option available this year enabling them to offer a higher starting salary of £21,000. UCAS opened on time on 28th October, and applications are coming in fast. PE and Salaried English are the subjects attracting the largest number of applicants. Universities and schools are starting to interview and the first offer has been made, pleasingly, to an excellent Maths candidate, proving that they are not the mythical beings many think them to be. Parent Power One of the materials issued to schools in the NCTL marketing pack was a pre-formulated letter to parents entitled Routes into Teaching. It was issued at Millais via Parentmail and produced an avalanche of replies and enquiries. I ran a morning and evening information ses-sion as a result for about 30 parents, and have answered as many emails and telephone calls. They are still coming in. My colleague Sally Tottman also sent the letter to Im-berhorne School parents and she is still answering queries. To date, Millais has one parent finishing 10 days SEP and about to apply via UCAS, and several others gaining school experience to determine wheth-er teaching is for them, and to gain experience of current teaching practice. If you would like a copy of the letter to send your parents, please email Caroline Carroll on caro-

Research and Development at Millais School I started the part time MA Ed Research Leader’s course at the University of Sussex in October this year and I am finding it the most rewarding learning experience that I have had since qualifying as a teacher some twenty years ago! I attend sessions on educational theory and practise and research methods at the University twice a month, and benefit from having a ‘critical friend’ in Colleen McLaughlin, a leading light in current educational research. Her role is to be a sounding board for my reflection on my teaching and also for planning for the school research project. Speaking with her helps me to formulate my views on my teaching and the research project and she also supports me by suggesting reading in journals and articles. Working this way has been a refreshing and very enriching experience and it has opened my mind to the infinite possibilities and methods for improving my own practise and therefore the experiences of the students in the school too. At the same time I am looking forward to leading a research project at Millais focussed on the School Development Plan. By the end of the two year course Millais will have a research leader/champion with the skills for qualitative, quan-titative and mixed methods of research. We will also have the results and analysis of the school based research project for moving teaching and learning forward in our school for the future. Ultimately the research work will be published at the University of Sussex along with that of other schools linked

into the research partnership with a view to sharing the findings as widely as possible.

Subject Network meetings The CPD Strategic Team has been absolutely delighted with the increasing success and recognition that the subject network meetings have been receiving. As these become more and more established numbers of colleagues attend-ing are increasing, resulting in some fantastic collaboration , sharing of ideas and expertise – as well as development of resources to improve students’ learning and progress in our schools. 14 schools and local sixth forms now have representation at the meetings and this is continuing to grow. What’s more there are 6 new subject network meetings outlined below which have set up this term and the Link Facilitators of these would be very pleased to wel-come new colleagues to join them: NEW Social Science Subject Network The Social Science subject network had its inaugural meeting in early December. The new A level specifications were discussed as well as progression from key stage four to A levels in Social Sciences and priorities for our future collab-oration. Those priorities include further development of how we will tackle the new A levels as well as the beginning to address the issues of sharing good practice, differentiation and collaborating on enrichment experiences for our students. We would be delighted to welcome new colleagues to our next meeting on 5th March 3.30 at Holy Trinity School. Link Facilitator for the group: Nicola Yeates - Holy Trinity School, Crawley Email: [email protected] NEW Examinations and Data Network The Examinations Office has been a turbulent place with changes in the last few years, and now following the termi-nation of AQA Network meetings, The Horsham Exams and Data Network will be restarting with a more comprehen-sive program to support those in roles with Data or Examinations responsibility. The group will meet bi-annually in Horsham to discuss developments in this area, update on Awarding Organisations’ policies, share best practice and provide local support in the changing examinations climate. Additionally this network group will also invite Data Managers and those in data- related roles, to meet in order to adapt and develop systems and to ensure that data and performance processes are fit for purpose offering effective support to students and staff in centres. The format of meetings will follow attendee need and additionally provide CPD opportunities with guest speakers, co-produced documents and strategy development. This new network will embrace and build on the existing skills and experience of the local examinations officers community. The first scheduled meeting for this group is 10th March- 9:30am – 11:30am, at Mitex Training facility, Millais School, Hors-ham. All those with an interest in Examination and Data Processes within schools are welcome to attend, including those from outside of the immediate region or those seeking to create their own local network. Light refreshments will be provided. Link Facilitator for the group: Elizabeth Hall – Examinations Officer Millais School Horsham Email: [email protected]

NEW The Learning Resource Centre Network

The LRC network meetings provide all school library staff with the opportunity for continued professional development. They offer a forum through which practitioners can share ideas and best practice to help en-sure the best possible provision in their own school libraries and LRCs. These meetings are aimed at those who work in school libraries but are open to anyone who works in schools and would like to develop a greater knowledge of how they can support students’ reading and literacy skills. Link Facilitator for the group: Ben Baker - Tanbridge House School Horsham Email: [email protected]

NEW Business Studies Subject Network Our aim for the Business Studies subject network meeting is to allow colleagues to share best practice, resources, ideas and also to provide general peer support. Our main aim is to offer and deliver opportunities to develop our practice within this subject, in order to improve our delivery for students in our classrooms. Link Facilitator for the group: Claire Champ – Forest School Horsham Email: [email protected]

NEW Health and Social Care Subject Network Our first meeting last month was well attended with 10 colleagues joining us from a variety of schools as well as 2 OCR representatives. At this meeting attendees were given a compre-hensive run down on how to deliver A911 (Controlled Assessment unit) for Single award HSC and all felt that they had gained a far greater understanding of what is expected of students to produce work of a higher standard as a result. Topics to be discussed / covered at future meetings include: Human Behaviour, Care Prac-tice& Provision and Promoting Quality Care. This was based on an audit of the needs of those present , so come along and help shape the agenda of future meetings to suit your own needs too. Our next meeting will be an A level meeting – January 2015 facilitated by Kelly Banbury at Hazlewick School in Crawley. Link Facilitator for the group: Suzanne Collyer – Imberhorne School East Grinstead Email: [email protected] NEW PE Subject Network The PE subject network meetings are held to share good practice and discuss various topics that are important to all PE departments. Visions for the new KS3 national curriculum have already been discussed, as well as engaging alternative games taught at KS4. Our next meeting is a perfect opportunity to do some standardisation for GCSE practical marking for both examining boards Edexcel and AQA. Forgot the biscuits last time so promise to bring some to future meetings! Do join us at our next meeting on Tuesday 3rd March 2015. Link Facilitator for the group: Dave Tidman – Tanbridge House School Email: [email protected]

In addition to the above new and recent networks, The CPD Strategic Team is extremely appreciative of the work of all our Link Facilitators old and new – who invest time and energy in communicating with the team and facili-tating and developing networks across a very wide range of subjects and support staff groups. To provide a flavour of how the networks develop and the impact these have please find below an update from Jane Bowen Melfi from The Forest School who is the Link Facilitator for Music and Performing Arts and who provides a sense of the value of this work over time: EXISTING AND DEVELOPING : Music / Performing Arts Network Meetings During the last academic year the Music / Performing Arts Network Meetings have focused on a number of issues raised by music/performing arts delegates. As a result of the meetings a pilot musical transition project has been started for year 6 pupils in local primary schools and Victoria Judd from Millais has hosted a successful music tech-nology workshop. This year we are focusing on a number of pressing issues: 'Life in Music after Levels', 'How to maintain our musicians learning instruments into KS3 and 4' 'What qualifications to offer for Performing Arts at KS4?' and 'Becoming an outstanding teacher in Music'. We are also looking to sharing best practice for units in both Music and Performing Arts and are planning joint moderation/sharing sessions. The meetings are available to teachers and middle leaders and give opportunities for us all to share ideas, worries, best practice and cake!! Thank you to everyone who has attended this year and for their fantastic contributions! Email: Jane Bowen-Melfi [email protected]

So to any colleagues who wish to attend – we extend a warm welcome to everyone to come along and take part in developmental work to impact on practice and pupils. Inter-ested? Just sign up through e-PD or by contacting the Link Facilitators directly. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Productive New Year! The CPD Strategic Team.

Teachmeet We are delighted to announce that our second Millais Alliance Teachmeet earlier this month was once again a huge success. This was organised by Forest and Millais colleagues jointly and welcomed 55 colleagues to The Forest School for an evening of CPD, networking, great prizes in our prize draw as well as good cheer and a finger buffet. Faye Hatchard has sent the following mes-sage to those who attended – but please do put the dates in your diary for our forthcoming Lead Meet in February and Teach Meet in July. We hope to see you there! “It was excellent to see so many schools represented and judging by your evaluation forms you will be implementing many of the ideas discussed. It would be really useful, if you have time, to feedback how this is received. As promised please find all of the presentations from the evening attached, thank you once again to all who contributed. In particular thank you to Jenny Smith, Head teacher at Fredrick Bremer, (TV Series: Educating The East End) for taking the time out of her busy sched-ule to travel down to present such a motivating mes-sage. May I take this opportunity to promote our next events in the Spring and Summer Term. There will be a Lead Meet on 11th Feb 2015, specifically designed for senior leaders and a Teach Meet on 9th July 2015, open to all teachers. Presentations can be found on the resources section of e-PD and a couple of feedback comments should whet your appetite. “I enjoyed this even more than the first one The range of presentations was spot on and all were deliv-ered in an engaging way. It was good to see that no-one was “monkied” for not sticking to time!!” “Fascinating to hear Jenny Smith talk about taking on the leadership of a school in such different circum-stances to those we work in.” Anyone interested in presenting at future Teach Meet conferences should contact either: Sue Kelly - [email protected] Scott Swift - [email protected] or Faye Hatchard - [email protected]

Leadership—Talented Leaders Could you lead the school that needs you most? There are areas in England, outside metropolitan hubs, that struggle to recruit great headteachers. As a result many students are not doing well enough, espe-cially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Talented Leaders programme matches exceptional and committed leaders to these areas of need, giving them the funds, coaching and support they need to drive sustainable change. The Future Leaders Trust are inviting applications from current or former headteachers looking for a new challenge. For further details go to http://www.future-leaders.org.uk/programmes/talented-leaders/

School to School Support Support for schools in the locality….. Specialist Leaders of Education If you are an experienced middle or senior leader who is interested in supporting leaders in other schools, you might want to apply to be a specialist leader of education (SLE). There are currently just un-der 5,000 SLEs. As a Teaching Schools we are responsible for the selection and placement of SLEs. This is one part of the government’s plan to give schools a central role in developing a self-improving and sus-tainable school-led system. Although the October recruitment round has now closed, details of future rounds in the new year will be confirmed shortly. We will be advertising when the next recruitment phase begins.

Who can apply To become an SLE, you need to have been in a leadership role below the headteacher for at least 2 years. Your headteacher will be asked to confirm that you are in an appropriate role. Higher level teaching as-sistants are not eligible to apply. You can be from any type or phase of school. You don’t need to be in an outstanding school or a school that is part of a teaching school alliance, as long as your school has the capacity to release you to work in other schools. You must have at least one specialism from our areas of expertise, which are based on the 4 areas of focus for Ofsted. Leadership and management Pupil achievement Quality of teaching Behaviour and safety We are particularly keen to recruit more Primary SLEs and also to increase our number of subject special-ists to help support Pupil Achievement.
