Principal’s Message Dear Parents:
I hope this newsletter finds everyone doing well and preparing for the many events coming up over the next few weeks. As we go into the various holidays com-ing up I hope everyone has an opportunity to do some-thing special with family and friends and also finds the time for some relaxation. Our semester exams will be held on January 21-24. January 26th is a holiday and our second semester starts on the 27th and is an “A” day. Congratulations to our ladies Volleyball team who captured their 6th state Championship in the last 7 years. They remained undefeated this year and take a 49 match winning streak into next year. Their record over the past eight years is 222-11. Four of the seniors have signed scholarship letters to continue their volley-ball careers in college. Our annual musical, Annie, will be held on Decem-ber 5, 6, and 7 at 7 PM. It looks as though the show will be fantastic and tickets are selling fast. Advanced sale tickets are available on our website. Other events coming up include: Financial Aid Workshop, 7 PM on 12/10; Interims distributed on 12/11; and Fine Arts assemblies on 12/20 at 9:15 and 10:45. The public is invited to attend the Fine Arts as-semblies. Please be sure to come to the main entrance and sign in and we will be sure you get to the assembly. As always, please feel free to contact any member of the staff should you every have any questions or need assistance. Sincerely, Bill Oblas

Counseling News
WelcomeWelcomeWelcomeWelcome
A s we start to close out the calendar year, please make sure that
you continue to check the counseling department’s website for
up to date activities that will help promote your student’s edu-
cation. In the upcoming months, we will be working with sen-
iors on college applications and financial aid. For underclassmen there are
opportunities for governor’s school and information about Monroe Tech-
nology center. PSAT results will be returned before the winter break and
most juniors should consider planning on taking the SAT in the spring.
Please continue to contact the counseling department with questions or
concerns.
For those of you unfamiliar with this pro-
gram, it is a web-based service de-signed for educational planning, which we use extensively with stu-dents beginning in the ninth grade. It is a comprehensive website that you and your child can use to help in mak-ing decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. It is linked with Counse-lors’ Office, a service that we use to track and analyze data about college and career plans. It also allows us to share information with you and your student about up-coming college rep. visits and events, local scholarship
opportunities, and other web resources for college and career information. In addition, the site includes a link that can be used to send us an e-mail mes-sage. Those who have logged on pre-viously and need assistance, or who wish to register with the site for the first time, should contact Mr. Lang-ston West, our Career Center Repre-sentative, on 571-252-2012 or email [email protected]. Beginning this month, counselors will hold even-ing workshops for parents to introduce them to this very important program. Please visit the LCHS Counseling website for more information.

Return of PSAT Scores Cards
PSAT scores will be returned to the students Dec 16 & 17th. The information returned on this day is one of the best education-
al tools the students will receive throughout this year. In addi-tion to their results, students will receive a copy of the test, a copy of their answers, and strategies on how to improve their test taking skills. Please go to our website and learn more about how to use the PSAT results through Score Report Plus and My Col-lege QuickStart.
NCAA Clearinghouse
In order to participate in NCAA athletics in college, stu-dents must register with the NCAA during their senior year in high school. Students are encouraged to register on-line at www.ncaa.org. A “Request for Transcript” form must also be filled out and turned into the guidance office as part of the filing process. Students should also meet with their counselors to review NCAA approved core courses.
Financial Aid Seminar
A Financial Aid seminar will be held in the Auditorium at LCHS on Tuesday December 10th @ 7:00. Eric Stegner of Apple Federal Credit Union will present information related to applying for finan-cial aid. We recommend all parents of seniors at-tend this program – please bring any questions that you might have about scholarships, completing the FAFSA, or other financial aid concerns.

In contrast to the SAT, which was designed to assess students by aptitude for college-level work, the ACT is more oriented toward specific course areas, and it measures mastery of English, reading, mathematics, and science.

This December is shaping up to be the most festive yet for the Loudoun County SCA! The month includes several classic events:
• Our 8th Annual Canned Food Drive.
The SCA’s food drive benefits Loudoun Interfaith Relief
The Drive runs this year from November 20th to December 17th. Students are
asked to bring in nonperishable food items and place in their designated card-
board boxes, which were placed in each raider rally. We are hoping to exceed
our previous weight of 1 ton of canned goods! The winners of the drive will
receive a pizza party, with the runners up getting cupcakes, and the third place
raider rally will be given candy.
• The 7th Annual Holiday Door Decorating.
All Raider Rallies can be decorated in a Holiday. First prize winners win hot choc-
olate and cookies, second place receives cookies and third prize wins candy canes!
•••• The Winter Pep Rally
All students enjoy seeing their winter sports teams featured, as well as classic
SCA festivities: including the eggnog drinking contest!
•••• Tacky Sweater Day
Friday, December 20th. Celebrate the season with your
tacky holiday sweater. The SCA will be handing out
candy canes to the ones we see.
The LCHS SCA thanks everyone for their overwhelm-ing support during this holiday season!
SUPER SATURDAY

Attendance
Research shows that academic achievement is directly
related to attendance and in an effort to improve our
school’s overall attendance, Loudoun County High
School will be implementing attendance procedures to
monitor each student’s attendance, particularly unex-
cused absences. All students will be assigned an advo-
cate (either an administrator or a guidance counselor)
who will chart their students’ attendance and develop
strategies to assist him/her in
keeping individual absence rates
below 15%. The county atten-
dance officer assigned to Lou-
doun County High School will
assist with this initiative.
The Science NHS will be offering tutoring in all science
classes every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
in Room 240.
Congratulations to the newest members of the Loudoun County Chapter of the National Honor Socie-ty! Our next meet-ing is Monday, 12/9 at 8:15 in the auditorium.
AVID Visits George Mason University
AVID students visited the campus of George Mason University on October 31st. Stu-dents attended an informational session, where they each received a GMU backpack pouch. Then students had a guided tour of the campus, given by two GMU students. One of the stops was at the seven foot tall statue of George Mason, presenting his handwritten first draft of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Legend has it that rubbing George Mason's toe before an exam will give students good luck.
Many AVID students agreed that GMU has a lot to offer with its variety of academic,
recreational, and arts programs, along with an expanding campus.

On December 3rd-6th, during all lunch shifts, we will be selling cookie grams to students and teachers that want to help donate to this cause and buy a cookie for a friend in the pro-cess! We are also accepting separate donations that can be brought to room 103. See Mrs. Petrella for more information.

Thank you to all the volunteers and students who supported the Halloween teacher appreciation event.
LCHS PTSA November 18, 2013 Meeting Highlights
STUDENT’S REPORT • Junior class president, Thomas Flynn, reported that the food drive is currently underway.
• The sophomore class would like to hold a dance but is in need of funding to do so. They are considering Great Gatsby as a theme.
PTSA PRESIDENT’S REPORT • The teacher appreciation group is doing a great job. The teacher appreciate breakfast was held on Friday the 22nd and
there will be a staff luncheon on December 11th with cookies, soup and salad.
• Constant Contact Communications: October’s newsletter went out using the constant contact system. We have also used the new system for monthly reminders of upcoming events and to encourage parents and students to go out for spirit night at Chick-fil-A to maximize the fundraising efforts.
• Just a reminder, there will not be a PTSA meeting in December. The next meeting is scheduled for January 13, 2014 in the LCHS Library.
