As I write this article, the city’s Christmas Lightshave just been switched on, with a wonderfullantern procession of local schoolchildren and apacked Cathedral Service.Christmas is an important time for local traders

and I hope that as many of you as possible will doyour shopping in the city to support them. Parkingis free in the Station Road, St Michael’s Squareand Westgate Street car parks after 4pm on latenight shopping Thursdays (1st, 8th & 15th).We tend to create more waste over the holiday

period, so please try to recycle as much as youcan. Our crews will still be working over theChristmas break. If you’re not sure which day yourrefuse and recycling will be collected, look atwww.gloucester.gov.uk or call 01452 396396.2011 has been a busy year for Gloucester.

We’ve worked hard to deliver the savings neededto cope with a reduced government grant and tofreeze the council tax at the same time. Now we’reworking to finalise the budget for next year – andwe want to freeze the council tax again. You cantell us if we’re on the right track by logging ontoour website from mid-December onwards. We’ve also made progress with regenerating the

city – the Quays to city centre linkages project hasbeen completed, we’re close to an agreement withStanhope on the Kings Quarter development, theGreyfriars scheme on the old College site now hasplanning consent and there is a privately-fundedscheme for the Railway Triangle about to go beforethe planning committee. Gloucester Quays hasannounced a huge new investment and we’vetaken on the assets of the Regional DevelopmentAgency, including the Fleece Hotel.2012 promises to be busy too. But before all that

starts, let me wish all Local Answer readers a veryHappy Christmas.

Monday 5th December – that is D-Day forGloucester and we must all pull together to makesure the city centre stays in this constituency notthe Forest of Dean – that the identity of our singleseat city remains linked to one MP, accountableto residents for city centre regeneration and otherissues. As the first Gloucester MP both to live andhave my office in the heart of the city for at least70 years I feel particularly strongly about that. Before that date, Gloucester needs as many

people as possible to submit their opposition tothe current plans and present an alternative. Here is mine: All residents of the entire city

centre, Alney Island, Pool Meadow and StOswalds would vote for a Gloucester MP. Thebulk of the voters needed to increase the size ofthe Forest would come from the adjoiningTewkesbury parishes. It’s not perfect: Hempstedresidents would vote for an MP for the Forest. But because we can’t move the whole ofCoombe Hill from Tewkesbury and split thatconstituency in half, it remains the only viableoption that is likely to succeed.Ministers and the Boundary Commission have

confirmed that this proposal is allowed within therules if the case is strong. Ours is.This proposal is supported by the Mayor, the

Bishop, the Dean, The Citizen, The GloucesterHeritage Urban Regeneration Company, theFederation of Small Business, the WestgateAssociation, the Gloucester Conservatives andother political parties like UKIP and the Greens, and the Lib Dem proposal is identical forGloucester.United we may win: divided we’re more likely

to lose. Let us not allow the entire city centre tobe divorced for the first time in over sevenhundred years from the MP for, and accountableto, the residents of Gloucester. You can respond in one of the following ways:

Short Walks in The Cotswolds

4½miles (7.25km) ~ 2¼ hoursEasy

The River Leach is a tributary of the Thamesbut in the early part of its course it is seasonal, running above ground only when there issufficient rainfall. This walk follows a windingvalley where the elusive river disappearsunderground and emerges again beneathdeep, weed-covered pools. The countrysidehere is quiet, offering a chance to escape thecrowds and traffic.A Park in Eastleach Turville and walk through thevillage past the church to the crossroads.

1 This simple stone clapper footbridge is thephotographic focal point of the village. It isparticularly attractive in spring amid banks ofdaffodils. It is called Keble's Bridge after thefamous local rector, John Keble, who became leaderof the Oxford Movement in the Church of Englandin the early 19th century.

The two villages: Eastleach Turville and EastleachMartin sit either side of the pretty River Leach withthe parish churches of each village only a coupleof hundred yards apart linked by the clapperfootbridge.

B Turn left along the road to Holwell and continuepast the windpump to an iron bargate on the left.

C Pass through the gate and take the path throughthe meadows close to the river. Go through a gateand follow the river bank to the edge of the woodlandahead, crossing a stile along the way.D Pass through the smaller, lower gate into the woodand follow a path close to the wall and river on theleft. Where the river bears sharp left, carry straighton along the waymarked path.E With the field on your right continue ahead andthrough woodland until the path is crossed by a well-defined track.F Turn left on to the track and continue along theleft-hand edge of the fields to the road. Turn left andwalk a short way almost to the road junction.G Turn left into the bottom field and follow the valleybottom round to a gate. Pass through the gate andfollow the track to another gate by a bridge.H Pass though the gate and follow the right-handfield boundaries. At the last field before the houses, bear half-left across the field to a gate and follow thelane back into the village.

He’s been viewed as one of GloucesterRugby’s best young prospects for quitesome time now but Jonny May is in nomood to hang around quite literally. The Rugby World Cup period has

allowed a number of players to stake a claimfor more game time and May has beenletting his rugby do the talking for him.Two tries in the first two Aviva

Premiership fixtures saw himmake his markearly but still one nagging question persistsand it’s a chance to put the record straight.Who is quicker? Him or Charlie Sharples?(Laughs) “He’ll probably be angry at me

for saying this but I beat him over 40metreslast season so I’m going to say it’s me! Over40 metres I’d back myself.”Pace isn’t everything of course but

May has beenquick out of the blocks in 2011-12.Havingmade six Premiership starts in totallast season, he’s almost at that total already.Prior to this season, the 21 year old had

featured mainly at outside centre or on thewing. However, he’s also turned out at 12in this campaign. How is his role differing?“It depends. When I’m playing alongside

Les (Lesley Vainikolo), I’m playing atraditional 13 role. However, when I’mplaying alongside Trinds (Henry Trinder), wetend to mix it up and change positions fromtime to time.”“On those occasions, it’s not that

different for me from playing a normal 13role and not too difficult for me to adjust.”He may only be 21 with hopefully many

games in the Gloucester shirt ahead of himbut the Swindon born flyer is alreadythinking ahead and working hard away fromthe playing field.“I’mpretty busy at themoment. I’ve resumedmy studies atUWEHartpury. I didmy first yeara coupleof years agobut then rugby tookovercompletely for a bit. However, I’m nowlooking to finishmy degree in Sports BusinessManagement. It’s good. I don’t have to traveltoo far for the lectures and I like to havesomething else to occupy my mind. And,hopefully, it will open up opportunities awayfrom rugby.”

ADott Ash is a 19 year old rapper from Gloucestershire whoreleased his first album in November of this year. He is also aresident at Bramah House in Cheltenham, one of CountyCommunity Projects’ (CCP) high support assessment centres forhomeless young people aged 16 to 25, and his real name is Ash.CCP, with its Head Office at 15 Royal Crescent, Cheltenham, is

one of Gloucestershire’s leading charities working with thevulnerable, and reaches out to youngpeople like Ash (left) using innovativemethods and helped along by a ‘cando’ ethos that permeates theorganisation.Ash has had a difficult upbringing,

spending several years living inhostels. It is his life experiences thathave served as the inspiration for hismusic which makes it so compelling. His debut album – “I’ll BeSomething” – reflects his determin-

ation to turn his life around and make something of himself. Ash tellsus: “I don’t like to talk too much about my upbringing. My music ispersonal, and when I write about the issues in my life they’re nolonger a burden to me. If you want to know how my life has beenthen just listen to the lyrics of my songs. I like to keep movingforward and not look back.”Ash is clearly a talented musician but his career has undoubtedly

been helped by CCP who know that music is a powerful tool forengaging with the disaffected young people in our communities.Over the last eighteen months Ash has been honing his talent in

CCP’s own fully equipped recording and practice studio in itsEducation Centre complex at 340 High Street, Cheltenham. Lastmonth, thanks to sponsorship from the Midcounties Co-operativeand support from the Fairgame Theatre, he produced a criticallyacclaimed album that is on sale in Coopstores, HMV, iTunes and Amazon.Cordell Ray (right), CCP’s Chief

Executive, said: “We are proud of Ash,of the progress he is making on both aprofessional and personal basis. Accessto the recording studio isn’t the onlysupport we have given Ash and otherresidents. Residents are given apersonalised support plan aimed atgaining them independence which mayinclude a variety of measures such as lifeskills coaching, emotional wellbeingcounselling, and help with drug or alcohol addiction. Our aim issimply to give them some stability, optimism and real life prospects.”While CCP, founded in 1989 by local businessman Michael

Ratcliffe to help young homeless people in Cheltenham, has alwayskept at its core the notion of transforming the lives of younghomeless people, over the years its remit has expanded anddeveloped to include improving the lives of children, families andvulnerable adults across Gloucestershire. Never is this moreapparent than each year in the run up to Christmas, when CCP

staff, volunteers and residents like Ash, all pull together to make itsHamper Scamper Christmas Giving Scheme a bigger and bettersuccess than before.Christmas is always seen as a special time of year, but this isn’t

always the case for everyone. The expense and expectation canplace a real strain on any family, but particularly those with lowincomes and difficult family situations. There are also many lonelyand vulnerable adults whosimply have nobody to bewith at this time of year.CCP’s Hamper ScamperScheme, which relies on thegenerosity of donors andvolunteers, provides hamp-ers and gifts to those whoneed them. It’s not too late to get

involved and there are anumber of ways to help. Weneed donations of gifts forchildren, and food such asluxury boxes of chocolatesand biscuits, food staplessuch as pasta, cereal, rice, and tea bags, and tinnedgoods such as tuna, soup, and meat. We also need help with sorting, wrapping and packingand delivering, as well as financial contributions. To get involved, contact Cordell Ray on 01242 228999 ext 111,

at [email protected] or www.ccprojects.org.uk.To catch up with Ash, visit http://www.facebook.com/adottashmusicor http://twitter.com/#!/ADottAsh.For more information about using CCP’s Musical Youth Studio, please contact Malaki Patterson at 01242 228999 ext 405 or [email protected].

LISA Jamieson set up Bentham Beauty three yearsago – providing an extensive range of beauty andmassage treatments – and she’s just completeda beautiful ‘make over’ of the business premises, further enhancing the experience for her clients.

Based at Witcombe, Bentham Beauty is readilyaccessible and has ample free parking. Therefurbishment has resulted in two wonderfultreatment rooms with décor, facilities andfurnishings designed to cater for your needs ina relaxing environment. There is also a SprayTanning room, w.c. and reception.

Lisa’s services include facials, massage, bodyscrubs, waxing, spray tanning, manicures, pedicures, lash and brow tints and perms, eyelash extensions and make-up – with tips oncolours and applications for both ‘day to day’ andspecial occasion requirements.

Fabulous deals! Her standard prices are great – call Lisa or visit

her website (details below) for actual rates – andnew customers enjoy a 20% discount on theirfirst appointment. Existing clients are not left outeither – see Lisa’s offer of £3 off any treatmentin the top right corner. For an even better deal, both new and existing customers can takeadvantage of monthly offers – in celebration ofthe refurbishment being completed, Lisa has threefantastic offers for December, details on the right.

As you’d expect with any professional salon,Lisa uses top quality equipment and products suchas Sienna X for tanning and Novalash extensions. However, it’s Lisa herself who makes a visit toBentham Beauty an experience customers liketo repeat. Her warm, friendly and consideratemanner are terrific natural attributes that

complement her desire to deliver the bestpossible treatments for visitors.

With plenty of time allowed betweenappointments, customers are never rushed.Lisa says: “Whatever service I’m delivering, it’simportant people are at ease. Having twotreatment rooms helps enormously – aftermany sessions, particularly a massage, peopleenjoy a little time on their own to furtherunwind or maybe freshen up. I can simply leavethem to relax, whilst inviting my next client intothe other room.” Lisa also operates a LoyaltyCard Scheme and various other packages, including party bookings for spray tanning.

Not just for the ladies!Bentham Beauty isn’t exclusively for ladies –

many men take advantage of the superb facilities(and prices!). With Christmas almost upon us, it’svery easy to treat a loved one – him or her – toa bit of pampering. You can ring up and pay overthe phone for a Gift Voucher (which can becollected or posted to you) – a great presentwhich allows the recipient to choose thetreatment they’d prefer!

Can you believe that December is here already?! As Iwrite this article it is unseasonably mild and the thoughtof crisp, cold weather is actually very appealing. Thegood side of this mild weather is that it extends thewindow of planting so things can be chopped andchanged in the border and work can carry on – actuallythat could also be the bad side, especially if you arelooking forward to hanging up the spade for a few weeksand sitting cosily indoors leafing idly through seedcatalogues!

Why not try making a ʻrusticʼ wreath this year? Youcan use some bare stems of ʻold manʼs beardʼ (clematisvitalba) from the hedgerows, or some Clematis Montana. You can wrap them round an old wire coat hanger pulledinto shape if you want something regular, or I just makea heart-shape with the stems, adding a bit of ivy andanything else you can find. Finish it off with a tartanribbon, and there you have it – very ̒ Country livingʼ andeven better FREE.

Now the question of Christmas presents for gardeners.A lovely present for someone who is a regular gardeneris a pair of Felco secateurs – the brand used byprofessionals and amateurs alike. They come in a rangeof weights and sizes so you can get a nice light pair thatsuit ladies and more meaty ones for the large rugbyplaying types (probably men). If you go to the gardencentre they usually have a display so you can handlethe different types.

Books I have really enjoyed and found useful includethe RHS ʻPropagating Plantsʼ by Alan Toogood – easyto read and lovely clear illustrations on how to get plantsfor nothing! The Well- Tended Perennial Garden by TracyDisabato-Aust is also very informative with plenty ofadvice and tips. There is also the added interest of seeinghow glamorous this woman is, and she runs her ownbusiness and she is a mother and she does loads oftriathalons etc (actually on second thoughts donʼt readit – it is too depressing). Stocking fillers for the gardener– well, labels, and twine never come amiss. Of courseif you really want to show how much you love your otherhalf why not buy them a garden replanting design, ormakeover? This could ensure that your garden is easymaintenance in the future (and thus cut down on yourworkload – think about it!) See my website for details.Right that is my plug over with, just to say I wish you alla Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in the garden.

A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST

The dawn of the railways in the Victorianera gave families an unprecedentedopportunity to travel and explorefaraway places for the first time. Train

companies werequick to recognisethe growing marketin tourism and indoing so promotedholiday destinationsin Britain visitedby train.

They did thisby commissioningartists to paintpicturesque scenes

of the countryside, seaside resorts andother places of interest. These werethen made into posters and billboarded up and down the country to

encourage travelby train.

Until recentlymany of theseposters werediscarded ordestroyed as newforms of travelbecame availableand marketingcompanies foundmore creativeways to sell travel.

That was until the likes of RichardFurness saw the value of these historicposters and began to list and categorisethe posters in existence. Richard, anauthor and keen enthusiast of steamtrain travel, is writing a series of bookscovering the length and breadth ofBritain. The books are titled Poster toPoster and can be found on his websitewww.postertoposter.co.uk

In celebration of the completion ofbook four, Pure Offices in Gloucester, where Richard’s business ‘JDFPublishing’ is located, agreed to host anexhibition of posters from Richard’spersonal collection.

The exhibition displayed a total of40 posters and gave visitors a rareopportunity to enjoy the beauty andthe nostalgia of a bygone era. Many afond memory was rekindled by visitorsto the exhibition.

Over 200 visitors came to KestrelCourt in Waterwells Business Parkwhich opened its doors to the public,on Wednesday 16th November.Special guests included Sir WilliamMcAlpine, a keen collector of steammemorabilia, who can boast to havinghis own full size train set at his home.

Also Richard Graham MP forGloucester described his admiration atthe reception, where he praised localbusinesses for working together toshowcase events such as theexhibition, helping to attract tourismand business to the city.

The exhibition closed on Saturday19th November, but don’t worry if youmissed it, there is a bigger exhibitiontaking place at Pure Offices at Portisheadin March. Due to the success, PureOffices in Gloucester are hoping to hosta similar exhibition, focusing on Canals

in Britain in the New Year, supportingthe Cotswold Canals Trust and theopening of The Stroud WaterwayCanal. For more information visitwww.pureoffices.co.uk

Steve Preston, manager at PureOffices said “in today’s difficult times itis important for businesses to workclosely together. For this reason wehave tried to create a businesscommunity within our businesscentres, providing the opportunity forcompanies to network and promotetheir business. Organising an exhibitionof this size takes a lot of hard work andeffort, but is always worthwhile ifappreciated by the community. Thankyou to all our guests who have left kindcomments about the event.”

Christmas is finally here andwith it come a number ofenjoyable events in the Citysuch as the switching on ofthe lights, the Victorianmarket and of course latenight shopping. This is alsoa busy time for the localpolicing team who aim tomake sure that everyonecan enjoy the festivities, whether attending theChristmas events orenjoying the night timeeconomy. There willtherefore be an increasednumber of officers on duty over the Christmas period tokeep people safe from harm and ensure the occasion isan enjoyable one.

However please also remember that the usual rulesapply to crime prevention. Don’t leave your valuables inunattended vehicles when out enjoying Christmas parties, shopping or going to the various events. Make sure youkeep on top of your home security when you are out overthe festive season. Don’t make it easy for burglars and don'tlet them spoil Christmas for you.

This time of year is also a good time to look back overthe last twelve months, which has certainly been veryeventful for the local policing team here in Gloucester. Theyear began with considerable work to ensure the Forcerestructure occurred as seamlessly as possible and with aslittle change as possible in the service seen by thecommunity. The restructure itself took place in April andwas quite a challenge for us, especially with the addedpressure of achieving £18million of savings, to beincorporated into the plan over the next couple of years.

Throughout the Spring the team were involved in a varietyof events, aimed at consulting and engaging with local peopleto identify priorities at the heart of local communities. Thenin August came a true test of the team and the Constabulary, when Gloucester was sadly affected by the disorderssweeping the Country. However this produced unexpectedpositives in the overwhelming support local police receivedfrom the community in tackling these offenders.

In September we saw how well the City had movedon, with the Gloucester day celebrations and theGloucester Youth showcase. And in November I was veryproud to attend the Remembrance service at the WarMemorial in Gloucester and see how well attended thisservice was, demonstrating the strong sense of communitywe have here in Gloucester.

Looking ahead into the New Year, the team willcontinue to make themselves available to you, to raiseconcerns and tell us what matters most to you. I wish youall a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
