Dec 2010 - WETA Magazine
description
Transcript of Dec 2010 - WETA Magazine
The holiday season has arrived, and with it come the delights and stresses of preparations, gift-giving, entertaining, travel and other activities associated with the festivities that animate the last weeks of the year. It is an enormously busy time for many of us, and in the run-up to the holidays themselves it may be that we can each use some daily inspiration to remind us of
the fellowship and joy that underpin these celebrations.
The classical offerings on Classical WETA 90.9 FM are one such source of inspiration, for this powerful music truly nourishes the spirit and enriches the soul. It can energize and sooth, move and uplift. Throughout December, in addition to the sublime musical selections airing on
Classical WETA each day, we will be adding holiday music and special seasonal programming (see below, and page 13) to the schedule.
I also invite you to enjoy engaging classical music programming on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD this month, from dynamic conductor Gustavo Dudamel leading the L.A. Philharmonic with opera superstar Juan Diego Flórez to Baroque chamber music at Lincoln Center, from brass music of the Renaissance to pianist Lang Lang performing on New Year’s Eve.
Tune in and be moved, be joyful, be inspired, be at peace. Enjoy the holidays, and thank you for your ongoing support of WETA.

John Sebastian Presents: Folk Rewindairs Saturday, December 4 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
A new music special presents a treasure trove of historical footage from the classic 1950s and 1960s era of folk music. The program — hosted by John Sebastian (left), lead singer of The Lovin’ Spoonful — focuses on the greatest singers and songwriters, spotlighting both vintage and contemporary perfor-mances. Featured are Pete Seeger and Judy Collins singing “Turn, Turn, Turn,” Harry Belafonte’s hit “Jamaica Farewell,” Trini Lopez’s rendition of “If I Had a Hammer,” Rod McKuen’s classic “Seasons in the Sun,” Bobby Darin’s heartfelt “Simple Song of Freedom,” and many other popular songs.
Doc Martin, Series III airs Saturdays, December 18 & 25 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
Completely lacking in bedside manner, Doc Martin — portrayed by Martin Clunes — continues his medical and social adventures in the quaint English seaside village of Portwenn, where he’s set up prac-tice after retreating from London. In this British comic-drama series, narcolepsy and food poisoning are among the many crises facing the blood-phobic doctor, while his clumsy attempts to pursue a relation-ship with local schoolteacher Louisa Glasson take dramatic turns. Will Doc stumble again with Louisa? Saturday episodes repeat Sunday nights, and watch for more of Doc Martin, Series III in January.

Cyberchaseairs weekdays at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the WETA Kids channel
Cyberchase is a series for school-age children that aims to spark interest in math and problem-solving. The central premise of the animated program is that the dastardly villain Hacker (voiced by actor Christopher Lloyd) is on a mad mission to take over Cyberspace with the help of his blundering henchbots, Buzz and Delete. But heroes Inez, Jackie and Matt are three curious kids determined to stop him with the help of their cyberpal, Digit (voiced by Gilbert Gottfried). Their weapon is their brain power.
Each episode takes the heroes on a thrilling adventure driven by a differ-ent math concept, and kids learn that math is everywhere and fun and prac-tical to use. In “For Real,” the live-action segment following each animated episode, youth-hosts Harry and Bianca show kids how math can help solve life’s problems in the real world.
Major funding for Cyberchase is provided by the National Science Foundation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Ernst & Young LLP, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broad-casting. Additional funding is provided by The Volckhausen Family.

The drama and excitement of productions from the nation’s premier opera company return to Classical WETA 90.9 FM as the 2010–2011 season of The Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcasts gets underway on Saturday, December 18 at 12:30 p.m. with a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlo on Classical WETA Opera House. The opera features Yong-hoon Lee in the title role, alongside Marina Poplavskaya (Elisabeth de Valois), Anna Smirnova (Princess Eboli), Simon Keenlyside (Rodrigo, Count of Posa), Ferruccio Furlanetto (King Philip II) and Eric Halfvar-son (The Grand Inquisitor). James Levine conducts.
Before the Met productions begin, the Saturday broadcasts feature productions from NPR’s World of Opera. December 11 at 1 p.m., the broadcast features a production of Massenet’s Don Quichotte from La Monnaie, Brussels, starring bass José Van Dam.
Met Operas in December
Sundays at 9 p.m. Holiday music on Classical WETA’s Sunday night broad-cast Choral Showcase has a grand start in late-November with Handel’s oratorio Messiah, and it continues in festive style through December. The program on December 5 is called Magnifi cat! and includes four very different settings of the canticle of the Virgin Mary from J.S. Bach, Herbert Howell, Claudio Monteverdi and Arvo Pärt.
On the program on December 12, we celebrate Beethoven with excerpts from both of his Mass settings, plus Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and the Choral Fantasy. On December 19, Heinrich Schütz’s Christmas Story is the centerpiece of the program (along with Britten and Poulenc), and Vaughan Williams’s Christmas cantata, Hodie — one of the composer’s last works — airs on December 26.
Furlanetto and Poplavskaya in Don Carlo
On Monday, December 20 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents the Maryland-based early-music ensemble Harmonious Blacksmith in concert at Georgetown’s historic Dumbarton Oaks Museum. Their program, called New and Olde: Christmas from Two Worlds—Noëls, Carols and Villancicos from Europe and the Americas, features both vocal and instrumental music that will delight the senses and gladden the heart. Using violin, viola da gamba, recorders, lute, guitar, harpsichord, and percussion, Harmonious Blacksmith performs music by Renaissance and
Baroque composers on both sides of the Atlantic, from the English-born Thomas Ravenscroft and French composers Michel Corrette and Nicolas Saboly, to Peruvian composer Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco and others. Also this month, Front Row Washington presents two recitals from La Maison Française: pianist François-Frédéric Guy and cellist Marc Coppe perform Beethoven’s complete piano and cello sonatas in programs airing December 6 and 13 at 9 p.m.
