Martha _Wilma Duell was born at Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin, March 16, 1871, all'd came to Dayton with her parents as a very young girl. She was married to Wm. Weir in 1888, and to this union was born

I' one son, Wm. L. · Weir, who survives. Mr. Weir died in 1902, and in 1907 she was married to Josh Ford. For a number of years the Fords lived at Huntsville, but Mrs. Ford moved back to· Dayton after the death of her husband about 15 years: ag~ ,

land for building roads into the area.

The Act under which Covello was homesteaded was passed

in 1878 . It stipulated that the government would grant a

patent on one hundred and sixty acres of land provided the

applicant had lived on it 60 days per year the past three years,

had made certain speci.fied improveme nts, and had shown evidence

of farming intent. The homesteader paid the modest s um of

$1.25 per acre when he got his pate nt.

Thomas w. Wh etstone on the westermost borde r of the

the Whetstone . Mrs. Edna Gwinn (nee Fullerton) and Dwight

Fullerton are two of the few Whetstone descendents still living

and agriculturally interested in the Covello of today.

It would seem that so many wanting to buy farms would

create a land boom and shoot prices up. To some extent that

was true. However , there were many of the homest eaders who

had endure d the privations and hardships until they proved up

on their claims who were only too happy to casl1 in and go back

"home 11. Many young fellows hatl left sweethearts behind and

could h ardly wait to go back. A homesick wife or husband or

both meant a likely deal for a n ewcomer .

When the stagecoaches and freight wagons rumbled through Southeastern Washington enroute from Lewiston to Wallula, one of the primary stops was the Whetstone ranch and store.

The coaches came over the Hardstock Grade out of the Tucannon and into country settled by Thomas Whetstone.

Two ancient ledger books, belonging to Dwight Fullerton, contain much of the history of the Whetstone and Fullerton families.

The Thomas Whetstone family came to this country in 1860 and settled in the hollow that now bears the Whetstone name.

George C. Fullerton arrived about 1890. Mr. Fullerton was one of the most prominent

~iversified farmers in the area, and was the owner of . _ ~ne of the most highly developed farms in the

Northwest, known as the Clover Lawn Farm. In 1892, he married Alice C. Whetstone, daughter of

Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Whetstone. The Whetstone Ranch ledger starts in 1869 and

contains the entries from the store, stage stop, hotel and farm. There are entries for hay for horses two nights at $2 and five meals and two beds for the traveler at $3. Another entry shows the amount of the bill on the down trip was $2.50 and the total was $8.50. A note in the margin said it was "settled by cash."

A man named William Freeman purchased some item from the ranch and it amounted to $16. An entry said it was settled "by cash, legal tender."

G.E. Weber had four horses to keep for nine nights and it cost him $9.

Another man had 11 days lodging and purchased 44.3 pounds of oats for his horses at a total cost of $24.29.

The ledger shows that men were paid $2.50 for 1 ¼ days of harvesting and another man received an advance of $1 on what was to be six days of work. H. Teel was paid $10 for cutting 12 acres of wheat.

Some men purchased overalls, shirts and tobacco and two plugs of tobacco cost $1.25.

A Dr. P. Welch stopped at the ranch in April, 1871 and paid part of his bill in medical aid which was valued at $60.

The Whetstone Ranch ledger continued through 1876. After that, the pages were labeled Columbia County. William Stewart was paid $2 for a team and driver for one day. Another man's account was settled by $40 in cash and labor in harvest with a team for 29 days at $2.50 a day.

The last page of this ledger is labeled New Year, 1878. T. W. Whetstone's day book and one of the final entries shows purchase of flour from S.M. Wait, who had a flour mill in what is now Waitsburg.

The second book, is the account book of George C. Fullerton and shows his earnings in 1893. The items range from driving a team to Pullman for $1.55 to selling 1 ½ dozen eggs for 25 cents .

Sawing wood seemed to be one of the tasks of the Fullerton ranch in 1894. One entry listed as wood sawing for the Chicago store (believed to be in Waitsburg). And he charged a whole dollar to make a blackboard for the Zigler school. On March 8, he sawed $6 worth of wood for the First National Bank which may have been in Waitsburg or Walla Walla.

His expense account for the same year showed a variety of items. On January 1, he purchased a magazine, the Delineator, for 15 cents. Then he subscribed to the magazine for $1.03 for the year; and he rented a post office box for 60 cents for three months.

They purchased three pair of socks, one spool of silk thread and three yards of dress lining, all for 50 cents, at the Chicago store.

A railroad ticket to Kendrick was purchased for $2.20. Kendrick was probably in what is now Idaho.

Another entry read: 11Had Edna's picture taken, $3." Two teeth were filled by a D. W. Holman for $2 and 25

cents was contributed to a missionary collection. The family rented another house at the rate of $3 a month.

Living expenses in 1893 were different than now. Twenty cents would buy steak or a beef roast.
