Be Strategic:Assessment Tips by Gloria Rogers
Is the data collected aligned with the College-wide outcomes that you want to assess? Measurements must be consistent with your outcome definition.
How many data points? More is not necessarily better.
How often? Data does not need to be collected from every student on every outcome every year by every faculty.
How used? If the use of the data is not known, don’t collect it.
Start with your curriculum mapMap the College outcomes to the courses
Prepare your syllabus
Prepare instrument and activity and collect data
Some assessment activities ideas: Essay, Exam, Homework, Project, Quiz, Portfolio, Oral Presentation, Lab Experiment, etc.
Prepare for your assessment activity: one or two. Keep it SIMPLE!!!
Design the instrument that you will use to measure the outcome:
Grades are NOT GOOD
Rubrics are excellent instruments
Example: Cultural Competence: Ethics in
Engineering
Document, document…
Prepare a draft report with the results of your measurements.
Meet with faculty in your program.
Discuss a realistic action plan to improve the program based on your assessment findings.
Document your action plans in your report.
Follow up on your action plan.
