SOUTH Yorkshire Firefightershave scrapped the eight-daystrike that was due to start thismorning after the fire authorityagreed to refer the dispute tonational arbitration.

The Fire Brigades Union has alsotemporarily suspended all other in-dustrial action.

The dispute over changes to shiftpatterns has been referred to nationalfire service arbitration, known as theNational Joint Council Joint Secre-taries.

The two sides are now in talksagain over contractual terms of refer-ence.

Ian Murray, FBU regional secre-tary, said: "The fire authority acceptedour proposals to involve the nationalemployers and union representatives.

“Shift change and related issueswill be referred to national arbitrationand the strike action scheduled to starttomorrow will not now go ahead.

“It is important this process is fol-lowed with a commitment by bothsides to seek resolution.

“This is a real opportunity for us toreach an agreement to end this long-running dispute and in doing so avoidthe need to continue with industrialaction.”

ELDERLY residents fromShroggs Head Close, Darfield, have been receiving visits fromthe Wombwell Safer Neighbour-hood Team (SNT) to check ontheir welfare since the recentlysevere weather.

The cul-de-sac, which is made up ofaround 28 bungalows, was practicallyimpassable in areas because roads anddriveways were blocked by snow andice.

Many residents could not carry outbasic errands for several weeks.

Wombwell SNT and local Commu-nity Safety Wardens worked togetherto clear paths, making sure that areasoutside the bungalows were properlycleared and gritted.

A WOODLAND area is about tomuch bigger as work gets underway to plant more than 20,000trees.

Forestry workers are beginning the project atWombwell Wood, expanding it to the UpperWoodhead mine site and in total to 362 acres.

The new trees will include 17,500 broad leafspecimens, such as oak, wild cherry and ash, withthe woodland providing a new habitat for threat-ened species of birds such as the redstart and thewood warbler.

The trees will join the old oaks of Wombwell, which date back many centuries.

A further 2,500 shrub species made up ofblackthorn, hawthorn, field maple, hazel, spindle, wild privet and dogwood will also take root.

Together they will help add to the mosaic ofhabitats for wildlife, especially woodland birds, many of which are nationally under threat.

South Yorkshire has been identified as a key location for species like redstart and wood warbler by the Forestry Commission and theRSPB.

Andrew Powers, from the Forestry Commis-sion, said: “This planting scheme is part of ourcontinuing project to revitalise one of South York-shire’s oldest oak woodlands and a key site forwildlife.

“Forestry is a long-term business and the treeswe plant today will ensure this magical placethrives well into the future.”

This project is easy enough, and prettyenough, that you'll want to make more thanone, they are lovely Butterfly Toppers thatyou can fasten to the tops of all your pencils.Materials: Coloured thin sheets of coloured card, Paper tomake a template, Glue, Scissors, Pencils, Black pipe cleaners,Sequins, buttons or colourful decorations

Instructions:1. Take a blank piece of paper and fold it in half. On the fold, draw a heartshape without the point at the bottom (the point extends beyond thefold). Look at the picture of the template shape here to see what thisshould look like - when you open the heart shape, it should look like a butterfly!2. Once you are satisfied with the butterfly shape, use it as a template totrace on to your coloured card and cut out the butterfly shape on the card.3. Now fold the butterfly shape on the card in half, and make two small slits close together, inthe centre, as seen in the picture. This is where your pencil will fit.4. Decorate the butterfly pencil topper with your buttons, sequens and decorations.5. Insert a pencil through the two slits.6. Take a black pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Twist around the front of the pencil at the front ofthe butterfly and make a loop at the tip of the antennas.

Schoolpilotsstrikeexam

STUDENTS at a Rotherham secondaryschool are studying a pilot GCSE moduleon the 1984 Miners’ Strike and it is hopedthat others will follow suit.

Mexborough School is the first in Rotherham topilot a module dedicated to the strike and the aimis to educate young people about its significance, now and then.

The overall goal is to see every school in SouthYorkshire feature the historical event on the cur-riculum.

Roy Huggins, head of history at the school said:“We’ve been studying our current module sinceSeptember and it’s proving to be very popular withour students as it’s relevant and based upon a turn-ing point in local history.

“The Miners' Strike is an exciting, engaging sub-ject and if we can successfully role it out, we hopethat every secondary school in South Yorkshire willconsider delivering it to their students.

“We believe that the Miners Strike is central tohelping young people in the area understand whothey are, where they come from and the challengesthat their communities have had to face over thepast 25 years in order to survive the consequences.”

Mr Huggins said that because of a lack of schooltext books on the subject, research and interviewswith people associated with the strike had played avital role in the students’ studies.

Dave Douglas, who co-ordinated the FlyingPickets in Doncaster for the NUM, has already vis-ited the school to talk about his experiences andartist, Rachel Horne, delivered a workshop on theimpact of the Miners’ Strike on the lives of localwomen.

“There is no denying that there were some nega-tive aspects to the strike,” added Mr Huggins, “butyou can not but admire the brave stand that the min-ers took to protect their jobs and communities.

“We can all learn a lot today from the communityspirit and the collectivism that united the minersand their families.”

The school is asking anyone with photographs orwilling to share their stories about the strike to e-mail [email protected].

THESE pictures showhow a stream and thegarden of an emptybuilding have beenturned into a unsightlydumping ground.

Horrified resident JudithRosser contacted the Weekenderto draw attention to the rubbish-strewn stretch of water in Swin-ton and demand that RotherhamBorough Council clean it up andpunish the dumpers.

The council said this weekthat it was already aware of theproblem and hard at work onsprucing up the neglected spot, known locally as The Brecks.

CCTV could also be installedto catch flytippers and deter lit-terbugs, they said.

Mrs Rosser said that the gar-den of a building on nearbyLawrence Drive was a “dis-grace” after more than a dozenblack big bags were left stackedagainst the side of the buildingand strewn across the lawn.

Tyres, bottles, cans and otherwaste littered the stream nearFitzwilliam Street and the sur-rounding grassed banks thisweek.

Mrs Rosser, of Rix Road,Kilnhurst, said: “It’s just terrible.Last week, we saw a couple ofmen from Streetpride came byand had a look of it but nothinghas happened since.

“The area is a disgrace, as isthe state of the garden.

“When I called the Streetpridenumber, they did not seem inter-ested and I was referred to thehousing department.“I felt like Iwas being fobbed off.”

But Swinton councillor KenWyatt insisted that the spot wasa known littering spot and wasregularly cleaned up.

“There is another major clean-up planned for that area and wehave funding to instal CCTV,” hesaid.

“This is a popular area forwalkers and children playing and

it is not acceptable that it is inthis state.

“People throw even three-piece suites in the stream andleave dog mess there.

“It is an important issue andit’s vital that the people ofKilnhurst and Swinton take re-sponsibility for where they liveas well.”

A 2010 Rotherham spokes-woman said: "We have removedrubbish from the grounds of thisproperty on several occasionsfollowing repeated flytipping.“The property is currently under-going construction work to re-solve damp and fire-damageissues. Several bags of rubbishwill be cleared this week.

“2010 Rotherham is alsoworking alongside the boroughcouncil, South Yorkshire Policeand local councillors as part of aspecial group set up to resolverepeated problems of flytippingin this area.”

This week is dominated by the change of the month and a potent Full Moon. You mayalso find yourself involved in some feisty exchanges - especially if you find yourselfunsure of whom to spend your leisure time with. If you are looking to move in a newcircle, an existing friend can feel pushed out. Or is it a partner who will try to dominateyour time? Call now for your love scope in full…

There may be someone you have to deal with on an everyday basis who is set to be athorn in your side. If you are in a supervisory or management role, it may be an unco-operative colleague or at home, an awkward offspring or partner. Or perhaps you’llfind someone rather overbearing. Yet solace comes from a surprise thread, which candelight. Call me now for your in-depth forecast…

An overbearing attitude can disguise just how unsure you really are. Try to avoid gettingsnared up in politics, instead surf the dynamic energy of Jupiter and Pluto. They en-courage you to dismantle the barricades and become more availing to the to and fro ofconversation. This may leave you vulnerable, but you will also gain plenty. Why notrisk it? Call now for your in-depth forecast…

There may be elements of your world that you want to change. If you are single, andhave no outstanding obligations, why not? Yet if you have other people in the equation, this may prove much trickier. The trick will be to stay calm. To quietly explain whatyou want to do. If there is not instant agreement, don’t fret. It may be a compromisecan yet be reached. Call me now for more news…

As you reach the end of the first month of 2010, do you feel satisfied with how you’rebalancing up your in and outgoings? If so, you may feel that you deserve a little treatto celebrate. But just recheck your thoughts and your paperwork. Are you sure thereare no bills or costs about to come out of the proverbial woodwork? Be prepared Capri-corn. Call me now for your financial forecast in full…

You might come up against a major challenge or test, but that doesn’t mean that youare going to fail, it just means you need to be very sure of how you handle any kind ofcontentious issue. The best tact is to listen. You can be good at this, realising that evenif people are unhappy, it’s better for them to get it off their chests and so it can prove.Call your special prediction line for more news…

Is someone being truly genuine? If they're not, the revelation of this can prove upsetting. But then it may be you who is finding you want to flow in a new direction, and someoneelse will find this difficult. However, being evasive might, in the short term, save faceor feelings, but when the truth eventually outs, it will just prove far more uncomfortable.Call now for more news and advice…

Think back to the middle of last month. Then you may have had a very clear idea ofwhere you were heading. Now fast-forwards to now. Are things still the same Libra?Umm, maybe not! The reason for this is that for all your hustle and bustle and the un-doubted highlights of the year so far, you may find yourself having second thoughts, but if you do, just go with it. Call for more news and advice…

If you love a good debate, you can be in your element this week, but then a pub quizcould see you sparkle too. Yet there's a fine line between harmless banter and gettinginto heated encounters which will do little for your blood pressure. Maybe you willhave to stand up for yourself, and rightly, but disagreeing over trivial stuff, just isn’tworth the hassle Gemini. Call me for more astral advice…

An unusual person can have a profound affect. This doesn’t need to be in a romanticcontext either it could be someone with dazzling business ideas. You could find yourselfdrawn to them like a moth to a flame but equally you can feel the need to suddenlyseparate yourself from someone else, whose company you are no longer enjoying. Callyour special Cancer prediction line for more advice…

This can be a crunch week for relationships, as Mars in Leo and a Full Moon in yoursign, combine to stir some mischief. How? Someone you’ve recently met may no longerseem so enticing, or you may want to raise your dissatisfaction with a long standingpartner. Yet if you are solo, an extra slice of confidence and devilment can draw some-one spicy to you. Call now for your love scope in full…

Prevention is better than cure, so if one of your health resolutions has gone by the way-side, this is an opportune time to get a grip on things. If you feel under par, but can’tquite figure out why, don’t discount a psychological factor. In fact, the more you holdin any concerns, the more they’ll fester. If need be, arrange an appointment with yourGP for a chat. Call me for more news and astral advice…

EVERY Febru-ary, across thecountry, choco-lates, flowers andgifts are ex-changed betweenloved ones, all inthe name of StValentine.

But who is this mys-terious saint and whydo we celebrate thisholiday?

The history ofValentine’s Day and itspatron saint isshrouded in mystery.

But we do know thatFebruary has longbeen a month of ro-mance.

So, who was SaintValentine and how didhe become associatedwith this ancient rite?Today, the CatholicChurch recognises at

least three differentsaints named Valentineor Valentinus, all ofwhom were martyred.

One legend statesthat Valentine was apriest who served dur-ing the third century inRome.

When EmperorClaudius II decidedthat single men madebetter soldiers thanthose with wives and

families, he outlawedmarriage for youngmen.

Valentine, realisingthe injustice, defiedClaudius and contin-ued to perform mar-riages for young loversin secret. When Valen-tine’s actions were dis-covered, Claudiusordered that he be putto death.

Other stories suggest

that Valentine mayhave been killed for at-tempting to help Chris-tians escape harshprisons.

According to onelegend, Valentine actu-ally sent the firstvalentine greeting him-self. While in prison, itis believed that Valen-tine fell in love with ayoung girl who visitedhim during his con-

finement. Before his death, it

is alleged that he wroteher a letter, which hesigned, “From yourValentine”—an ex-pression that is still inuse today.

Although the truthbehind the Valentinelegend is murky, thestories certainly em-phasise his appeal as asympathetic, heroic,

and, most importantly,romantic figure.

It’s no surprise thatby the Middle Ages,Valentine was one ofthe most popular saintsin England and France.

Some believe thatValentine’s Day is cel-ebrated in the middleof February to com-memorate the anniver-sary of Valentine’sdeath or burial, which

probably occurredaround 270 AD.

In ancient Rome,February was the offi-cial beginning ofspring and was consid-ered a time for purifi-cation. Houses wereritually cleansed bysweeping them out andthen sprinkling saltand a type of wheatcalled spelt throughouttheir interiors.

WATH St James' impressiveseason continued as they trav-elled to high-flying Pontefract inthe U17 Premier Division of theCharles Rice League.

In atrocious conditions, the hometeam gained the upper hand and wentahead with a deflected goal.

Wath remained calm and forced sev-eral corners with Kieron Hirst goingclose with a fine strike which brushedthe woodwork.

Saints levelled when Joe Formbyscored from a spectacular overhead kick

to level before Pontefract went aheadwith a disputed penalty.

That enraged the visitors and fromthe restart they pressed for an equaliser. It came as Saints’ pressure proved toomuch as Rowe back heeled into spacefor Nial Cairns to pick out Hirst whodribbled the ball past a mesmerised de-fence into the net to level.

In the second half, the home teamcould have taken all three points in timeadded on from a free kick on the edgeof the box but Jones pulled of a finesave to ensure both teams shared thespoils.

JOSH Wale finallymakes his eagerly antic-ipated ring returntonight as he faces theexperienced MarcCallaghan at the Bella-houston Sports Centrein Glasgow.

In his first ring appearancesince losing to Matthew Marsh forthe vacant English Super Ban-tamweight title, Wale now be-lieves he can put four months ofbitter disappointment behind him.

Since that defeat, the Bramptonace has endured a torrid time inand outside the ring, finding it al-most impossible to find any will-ing opponents and having towithdraw just days before oneproposed bout due to father andtrainer Mick falling ill.

With all that now behind him,

the self-styled 'Outlaw' is nowready to get back to winningways,

He said: “I can't wait to get inthere and get back on track, then, hopefully, I can start looking to-wards title shots”

However, Callaghan, tenyears Wales’ senior, should pro-vide a stern test, having foughtfor numerous domestic titles andshared the ring with some themost talented and gifted boxerson the domestic scene.

Wale will not only face a disad-vantage in terms of experience butalso in size, having initiallymoved down from super ban-tamweight following the loss toMarsh, only to switch back to thedivision because he couldn’t findan opponent.

Wale is under no illusionsabout the task at hand, but re-mains supremely confident.

“The Marsh fight was a wakeup call really. I just wasn't bigenough for the weight and I wasgiving too much weight away tomy opponents,” he said.

“I moved down to ban-tamweight but no-one would fightme, so I've had to move up againfor this one.

“I'm definitely not looking pastthis fight. Callaghan has been inthere with some top names.

“I only found out that fight hadbeen made on Tuesday, which isreally short notice. But I've beenin the gym since my last fight andright through Christmas, so Ijumped at the chance.

“I'm in top condition and veryconfident, I'm just dying to getback in there.”

A LAST-GASP penaltyfrom fly-half Joe Thompsonsnatched victory for Wath inan enthralling home winover Baildon in YorkshireThree.

Thompson was on hand to land thethree-pointer after a good run from pacywinger Paul Hutchinson forced Baildoninto conceding a penalty.

Wath went ahead with two early triesfrom full-back Anthony Barratt and cen-

tre Steve Mason, but could only forcethemselves into a 10-8 lead at half-timeafter Thompson failed to convert eitherscore.

A second try from Barratt stretchedtheir lead to 15-8 before Baildon piledon the pressure to pull it back to 15-13.Thompson kicked a penalty to land hisfirst points of the match but Wath’s joywas short-lived as a converted try fromBaildon saw them take a 20-18 leadwith just four minutes left on the clockbefore Thompson struck.

DEARNE ValleyBulldogs carried ontheir superb formwith a convincing44-10 victory overMorley Borough. The result keepsthem joint secondin the Pennine Am-ateur RugbyLeague Second Di-vision, within apoint of leadersNewsome Panthers.

A competitive first 20minutes saw neither sideput points on the board, butan intelligent Morley trywas converted to make it 6-0 in favour of the visitors. However, a gap in the Mor-ley defence left a clear pathopen for David Johnson toscore his first try of thematch and level proceed-ings.

Man of the match KarlClayton crashed over theline shortly afterwards toincrease their lead; the firstof four tries for the enig-matic no.6.

Morley didn’t give uphope after Clayton’s burstand looked to get back intothe game before a typicallypowerful touchdown fromGaz Phillips effectivelyended the game.

David Johnson baggedhis second just momentslater, before the excellentDanny Cribbis crashed overthe line to make it 44-10.

The Bulldogs play fifthdivision side Silisden ParkRangers away in the Pen-nine Supplementary Cuptomorrow.
