Dearne Valley Dental Emergency Service

General informationThe Dearne Valley Dental Access Centre offers two different NHS services:l The Daytime service offers an emergency Dental

Service to those patients who do not have a dentist of their own and have a dental problem.

l The Dearne Valley Dental Emergency Service offers an emergency service out of normal office hours for patients with acute problems and cannot wait until the next daytime service.

Access to both services is by telephone only.

Telephone appointments onlyPlease note this is not a walk in centre and for security reasons patients without an appointment will not be allowed access into the building.

Daytime serviceThe Dental Access Centre phone line is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 9.30pm to provide emergency treatment. We operate on an appointment basis avoiding the need to wait a long time for your turn. Appointments are released daily on a first come first served basis and are made by telephone only. Due to the overwhelming demand for emergency treatment we ask that patients phone for an appointment as soon after 9.00am as possible.

Out of Hours service The Dearne Valley Dental Emergency Service offers an out of hour’s telephone service to patients in the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham areas. The service offers advice to patients with a dental emergency. In addition to the weekday hours of 9.00am to 9.30pm, the phone line is also open 12.30pm to 5.00pm at weekends and on Bank Holidays. Patients with a dental condition that cannot wait to be treated during normal office hours may be invited to attend for a consultation.

Paying for NHS treatmentAll NHS dental treatment carries a charge which is determined by the government. If you are not exempt from these charges, you will be asked to pay for your treatment. This can either be cash, debit or credit card (excluding American Express). We normally ask you to bring £47.00 with you on the first visit to cover all eventualities. If you do not have to pay for dental treatment it is now necessary to bring proof of your exemption to your appointment. We also ask you to bring the details of any medication or tablets you are currently taking along to your appointment.

Dental studentsStudents work at the Dearne Valley Dental Access Centre as part of the Sheffield University Outreach teaching program. The students are supervised at all times by experienced dentists from the local community. You will always be informed when treatment will be provided by a student, and your consent must be given before an appointment is made. Patients are free to refuse or discontinue treatment at any time while being seen by a student. Normal NHS charges apply.

Finding a DentistYou will still need to find a local dentist once treatment at the centre has finished. The Dearne Valley Dental Access Centre cannot register you or provide long term care. We are here to provide emergency care only. If you ask at the reception we may be able to find a local dentist, for you and your family.
