Preliminary Festival Registration Due: October 15, 2021 by 1 pm

Final Entry Deadline Monday November 5 by 1 pm

Payment DUE –On or BEFORE the Festival Date. We can prepare invoices if

needed for bookkeepers. Check is preferred but cash the day of is also

fine!

*Drops after October 27th will not receive a refund (meaning if you have

students sign up and we have them registered, you are responsible for their

entry fees even if they drop the event. This is due to having to schedule

enough judges to cover all events. If you have questions regarding this

please let me know!

Please complete the attached registration form (EXCEL form sent to you via

email.) Right click to open in Excel and save it where you want to save it.

Put an X under the individual events in which a student is entered. If the

student is entered in 5 events, put an X in the five star trophy column. For

each group event entry, assign a Letter or Number to each group and type

the appropriate Letter or Number under that category for each student in

DEADLINES AND FEES

The deadline for entering the festival is October 15, 2021. Registrations

will be accepted until November 1, 2021. All fees must be paid by/on

Festival Date. Drops made after that date will result in a loss of entry fee.

Entry fees are $30 per school plus

$5.00 per person per event. (Students entering 5 events will get a $5

discount, making their maximum $20)

Checks can be made payable to Pearland Theatre for all fees.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND RULES

1. Refreshments will be served to the directors and bus drivers in the Black Box.

2. A concession stand will be available in the cafeteria during the festival. (Please

do not take food or drinks out of the cafeteria. Students doing so could cause

their school to be disqualified.)

3. Students will be asked to remain quiet in the commons area as they travel to

their events. There will be a “warm up room” available for groups to prepare for

their events. Warming up and/or practicing in the commons will not be allowed.

4. Drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking on our campus will result in the entire

school being disqualified. Pearland ISD has a policy of no smoking by anyone on

school property.

5. Vandalizing the school will result in the entire school being disqualified.

6. Contestants must be on time to all rounds. Students not participating in an

event will be expected to remain in the cafeteria or observe a round.

7. Do not enter or leave a contest room while a contestant is speaking. Do not

disturb a contestant in any way while he or she is speaking. All contestants and

observers should stay in the competition room until all performances have been

presented. The judge will dismiss the group.

8. Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their students. Please see that they

do not loiter in the halls or cause a disturbance of any contest in progress.

9. Cross entry is allowed if approved by schools director and PHS. Students who

are cross entered must send a representative to the other room to check in and

hold the student’s spot. It is up to the school’s director to allow students to

cross enter.

(This is a form you can use for the kids so that they understand what they

can and can’t have for each event. Feel Free to use it or change it.)

DRAMA FESTIVAL EVENTS & RULES

PROSE INTERPRETATION –

The same rules apply here as in POETRY INTERPRETATION, except that the

selection may be any fiction or non-fiction work other than poetry or a play.

Chapters from literature, essays, and letters are appropriate for this event. The

time limit is 5 minutes maximum with no minimum.

Folder/binder required (Prose is read with flare; not memorized)

Only movement from the waist up is permitted

Memorized Introduction

STORYTELLING –

The contestant may use a published or an original story that is suitable for

children 6 years of age or younger. The time limit is 7 minutes maximum with no

minimum.

Must be familiar with story

Props and costumes, if used, should be kept to a minimum

GROUP IMPROVISATION –

Each group will draw three acting prompts and choose one to perform within 60

seconds. Immediately after choosing the topic, an additional 60 seconds will be

given to prepare for the performance. The scenes may be humorous or dramatic in

nature. Each topic will be used only once. The time limit is 5 minutes maximum

with no minimum.

Introduction should include actor’s name, school, & grade level

3 or more Actors

PREPARED AUDITIONING –

The time limit is 2 minutes maximum for both selections with no minimum.

The contestant must perform two selections: ONE humorous & ONE

dramatic

This event consists of reading and interpreting orally, a poetry selection that has

been prepared before-hand by the contestant. It may be one poem, a cutting from

a longer poem, or a series of poems on a related theme (i.e. Friendship, sports,

courage, etc.) The time limit is 5 minutes maximum with no minimum.

The contestant will present a memorized selection, which is dramatic in

GROUP MIME (a.k.a. GROUP PANTOMIME) –

humorous or dramatic in nature. Only the intro may be spoken. Makeup and

costumes may be used but are not required. The time limit is 5 minutes

maximum with no minimum.

You must provide your own ipod/device & any adapters needed. CD’s

not allowed

Props and costumes are permitted but are a secondary consideration

to the performance

Choreography must be kept appropriate for school

GROUP ACTING –

A group of contestants will present a scene from a play, short story, or novel.

Original scenes are permitted. The time limit is 10 minutes maximum with no

minimum.

Drama Festival Behavior Contract

I, ________________________ agree to the following rules and regulations for

my participation at the PHS Theatre Festival. I realize that if I break one or more

of these rules, I will suffer the consequences of my actions. I am representing my

school and community and as such, I will follow all the rules that have been clearly

laid out for me according to my school honor code and company honor code.

I will be respectful to all performers during performances no matter what

school they’re from.

I will applaud appropriately

I will not make or take phone calls or text messages during

performance sessions.

I will not run in the hallways

If I need assistance from “fill in the blank,” I will approach them

Calmly and wait to see if either is speaking (or listening to another speak)

before I begin talking

I will be patient if I need to get help from “fill in the blank” because I

realize that they are only ONE person and will help me as quickly as possible

I will not enter or exit a classroom until the judge tells us we are permitted

to enter or exit

I will watch performances if I am not participating in an event.

I will not yell, scream or raise my voice

I will not be rude to students, parents or teachers

I will be helpful to my fellow students and to others at the festival

(i.e. pushing chairs in, cleaning up the classrooms after sessions, etc.)

I will CLEAN UP after myself in the commons. I won’t expect someone

else to throw my trash and/or drink away. If someone reminds me to clean

up, I won’t be rude to them, I will appreciate that they’re trying to help keep

our area nice and clean
