Memories of a life in films Part 6, by Noel CroninFrom the quiet formality of the civil service I started at Roy Jordan’s, a freelance post production house in great Russell Street near the British Museum, above an estate agent’s office, who I believe was Roy’s uncle. The work was mostly overspill editing from the BBC, Thames, ILEA ,(the Inner London Education Authority), ITN and freelance productions – all basic fare but it paid the bills ! Another editor there was Bob Rootes, I think a grandson of Lord Rootes, famous for turning down the Volkswagen. Roy made sure that we competed for work so things were always a bit strained and the Union Act didn’t help; in my opinion that union did more harm than good to the British Film Industry – but I will move on. Roy Jordan had a good eye for business and spotted the potential of a new flat bed editing machine called a Steenbeck. He started purchasing these machines and renting them to the BBC, ITV etc and quickly built up the largest rental fleet in the UK. These machines were heavy and we all at times had to help loading and unloading from outside the estate agents downstairs and into a van. Times were getting tough for freelance editing and Roy was happy with his Steenbeck rentals so we decided that I should take over the editing side and pay him rent. The idea was good but would it work? More next month.

Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. Noel is contributing a series of memories to the newsletter over the coming months. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for The Rank Organisation and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on TPTV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades.

BOOK OFFERS – RECOMMENDED NEW RELEASE

Raising an Eyebrow My Life with Sir Roger Moore By Gareth Owen Foreword by Britt EklandFeatures original and unseen photographs and correspondence.A unique insight into life with Sir Roger Moore – written by his PA, co-author, onstage co-star, and confidant. Having taken on the role of Roger Moore’s executive assistant in 2002, Gareth Owen became the right-hand man to an icon, faithfully at Roger’s side for fifteen years until his passing in 2017. In this affectionate and amusing book, the author recounts his times with Roger Moore and gives a unique and rare insight into life with one of the world’s most beloved actors. Roger always said, ‘Gareth knows me better than I know myself.’ For all his celebrity, Roger Moore was quite reserved, preferring to tell fun tales about others, but his trusted sidekick was with him throughout his worldwide travels, his UK stage shows, his writing process and his book tours, as he received his Knighthood, and as he rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous. There were genuinely hilarious, heartfelt and extraordinary moments to be captured and Gareth Owen was there to share them all.

Spotlight on Christopher BeenyBorn: 7th July 1941 Died: 3rd January 2020

Born in London on 7 July 1941, Christopher Beeny grew up to be one of the most recognisable faces on stage, screen and television and successfully made the transition from child star to an adult acting career. He spent his formative years in Bristol. Both his parents were teachers. When he was just six years old, Beeny began his career by dancing with the leading British dance company, Ballet Rambert.

He went on to work with Dame Thora Hird for the first time in his debut film role, The Long Memory (1953). This was quickly followed with a TV made film, The Queen’s Admiral (1953), The Kidnappers (1953) and Child’s Play (1954) – taking one of the major roles in the latter, alongside fellow child star Anneke Wills (who also made the transition to an adult career) and established stars, Mona Washbourne and Dorothy Alison. When Renown Pictures restored this film in 2019, Christopher was delighted – even more so when it premièred on Talking Pictures TV.

His first big success came when he was cast as Lennie Grove, in the highly successful TV series The Grove Family (1954-57), in which he chalked up 125 episodes – sadly many lost today. The big screen version came in 1955 with It’s a Great Day, which thankfully survives in the Renown Pictures archives. The Grove Family is documented as the UK’s first ‘soap.’

He appeared in A French Mistress (1960) with Cecil Parker and James Robertson Justice but television beckoned and he soon clocked up over the next two decades a diverse and vast CV of performances including, Emergency Ward 10, Dixon of Dock Green, Taxi, Softly Softly Task Force, The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, The Regiment, The Sweeney and Armchair Theatre. In 1971 he was cast in the highly popular period drama Upstairs Downstairs as Edward and found a whole new generation of fans, playing the character in 46 episodes, until it came to an end in 1975.

Comedy came naturally to Beeny and he next teamed with Paula Wilcox in the sitcom Miss Jones and Son (1977-78) and took the role of Tony in the popular revival of The Rag Trade (1977-78). His friendship would be renewed with Thora Hird when they worked together in the television series In Loving Memory (1979-86) – although the original pilot was aired in 1969!

Beeny’s stage successes have included musicals such as Stop the World I Want to Get Off, Oliver! and Crazy for You as well to farces including Boeing Boeing, Run for Your Wife and Bedroom Farce. He returned to films in 1984 when he starred with Roger Daltrey in the Children’s Film Foundation film, Pop Pirates, while in recent years, viewers have seen him in the TV series: Emmerdale, Sense and Sensibility, Last of the Summer Wine (2001-2010) and Honest, among others. In 2011-12 he also appeared in pantomime at the Assembly Hall in Tunbridge Wells.

In 2016, Christopher appeared with Brian Murphy and Derek Fowlds at the 2nd Renown Festival of Film. People were thrilled to see the actor, who was happy to meet some of his many fans. Thanks to television and film we are grateful that his work will not be forgotten.

His début album Adam was released on 4 November 1960 to critical acclaim for the inventiveness of Barry’s arrangements and Faith’s own performances. Still 20 and living with his parents, he bought a house in Hampton Court for £6,000, where he moved with his family from Acton. In December 1960, he became the first pop artist to appear on the TV interview series Face to Face with John Freeman. In 1961, Faith appeared in the film What a Whopper, with Sid James, Spike Milligan, Wilfrid Brambell and Carole Lesley. It was written by Terry Nation, and had music by John Barry; Faith sang the title song, “The Time Has Come”. He also appeared in films such as Beat Girl (1960), Never Let Go (1960) and the television drama No Hiding Place. From the British Film Institute Shadows of Progress Year: 1951-1977 | 4 discs Colour: black & whiteRunning time: 830 minutesThis landmark collection brings together over 14 hours of film material preserved in the BFI National Archive, telling the previously untold story of British documentary film-making through the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

As Britain emerged from the second world war, new social and political challenges brought about inevitable change. This created a need to look at, and engage with, the country’s people and places, values and industries.

Until now, the films and filmmakers in this collection have been overlooked and under-appreciated. The films presented here – commissioned by private industry, commercial sponsors, Government departments and independent charities – are every bit as inspired, ground-breaking and indispensable as anything produced by the Free Cinema or British Documentary movements.

Spotlight on Derek FowldsBorn: 2nd September 1937 Died: 17th January 2020

We were very sad to hear the news of the recent death of Derek Fowlds. He was a prolific actor who could effortlessly entertain his audience, whether on children’s television, as a film character, in a dramatic or comedy role for television.

Born on 2nd September 1937 in London, he was educated at Ashlyns School in Hertfordshire. In his youth he wanted to be a footballer, (he was a lifelong Chelsea fan), and merely tried

acting in school plays, thinking it was nothing more than a “bit of a lark.” However as he matured, he decided to try out for an acting career and began training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. His first professional debut was on stage at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Colwyn Bay in 1958, whilst on holiday from his studies at RADA. Upon completion of his RADA training he graduated with an Honours Degree. His London debut was in 1961, appearing in The Miracle Worker, at the Wyndham Theatre.

His first film role came in 1962 in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, where he played the uncredited role of a borstal inmate. He received his first screen credit later the same year in We Joined the Navy (1962). He continued to pop up throughout the sixties in such films as Tamahine (1963), Doctor in Distress (1963), Hot Enough for June (1964), Hotel Paradiso (1966) and was particularly outstanding in Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) for Hammer Films.

However it was in television that he would make his biggest impact, appearing in many of the most popular series and plays of the sixties, including; Gideon’s Way, Z-Cars, The Protectors, Armchair Theatre, Dr Finlay’s Casebook, Playhouse Theatre and Fraud Squad. In 1969, Fowlds became ‘Mr Derek’ to the inimitable Basil Brush, staying in the role for eight series’ of The Basil Brush Show. He replaced Rodney Bewes, Basil’s previous side-kick and became an instant hit with a new generation, leaving in 1973. His new-found recognition resulted in further television roles, giving him the opportunity to demonstrate his ability in both drama and comedy. Some of this later work included roles in Edward the Seventh, The Liver Birds, Clayhanger, Comedy Playhouse, Cribb, Minder, Robin’s Nest and Triangle. In 1979, he accepted the role of Bernard Woolley in Yes, Minister, a brilliant TV satire series that lasted until 1984. The series was so popular with viewers that in 1986, a sequel series, Yes, Prime Minister, aired, lasting for a further two years.

Fowlds continued to find success throughout the 80s and 90s, with roles in Chancer, Van der Valk, The Darling Buds of May, The Detectives, Casualty and The Royal. The most successful role of his later career began in 1992, lasting until 2009. Playing Sergeant Blaketon in Heartbeat introduced him to another generation and he became a household name once again. His last appearance was on the daytime drama, Doctors in 2017.

He published his best-selling autobiography in 2015 and joined Brian Murphy, Christopher Beeny, Vera Day and Patricia Dainton at the 2nd Renown Pictures Festival of Film in 2016, genuinely delighted at the attention he was given from fans in attendance. He was a familiar face on stage and screen and a character actor of great diversity, a charming man and a consummate professional who won’t be forgotten.

Remembering the Picture Palaces & Flea Pits The Majestic Picture House

Daulby Street, LiverpoolAs with most of the cinemas which underwent stages of change and redevelopment over the years, the picture house in Daulby Street was no exception. The Majestic Picture House was opened on the 11th of June, 1914. It was constructed on the east of the inner city, on a plot between Daulby Street and Boundary Place near the outskirts of the city. When its doors first opened, the Majestic held 870 patrons, which was later expanded to 1,109 seats. Films screened from 2:00pm to 10:30pm with prices at 3d, 6d, 9d and 1/-.

During the 1920s the Majestic was advertised as a ‘super cinema’ because of the large programmes and musical accompaniment which lifted the venue to a higher status. The symphony orchestra at the Majestic was led by C.V. Roche who went on to lead the Liverpool City Orchestra at the Palais de Luxe.

In the 1920s cinema-going in Liverpool soared, as did music-hall and theatre attendance, but it was also a time of competition from other cinemas popping up around the city, such as the new Trocadero, which claimed to be the largest cinema in Liverpool when it opened in 1922. By the mid-1930s, further additions like the Paramount (now an Odeon multiplex) and The Forum – owned by ABC but not officially named as an ABC until 1971 – began to overshadow the Majestic. Something needed to be done if it was to continue to be an ongoing concern.

In 1937 the proprietors, Majestic Picture House Ltd, applied to the city of Liverpool for permission to demolish the existing theatre to make way for a brand new 1,800 seat super cinema. The plans were accepted and the process began immediately after the last screening, which occurred on the 3rd of April 1937. Just under six months later, on the 2nd of October, the new Majestic opened its doors. This was a remarkable feat – certainly something no building company with all their red tape and regulations, could ever replicate today. The renovations, expansions, and technological updates had reputedly cost between £30,000 and £40,000 – the equivalent to around £540,000 in today’s money. The new cinema opened with a Hollywood double-bill, Bing Crosby and Shirley Ross in Waikiki Wedding (1937) and an American detective mystery with Karen Morley, called The Girl From Scotland Yard (1937).

The New Majestic Picture Palace featured a 75ft tower with the theatre’s name on the outside and a large canopy over the three pairs of doors which made up the main entrance. The auditorium included marble and ornate plaster work and a large proscenium with a silver satin curtain over the screen and crimson side curtains. The auditorium seated 1,162 in the stalls and 632 in the circle. It was equipped with a Western Electric (WE) sound system. The new Picture Palace was a hugely successful venue and received regular patronage for over a decade, but by the 1950’s it had become a ‘second run’ theatre once again. Television was beginning to steal the audience. Music Halls were closing fast. Despite the odds The Majestic kept going – even upgrading to CinemaScope in 1954 – and ran continuously through the remaining decade and the 1960’s.

During the seventies, the film industry in Britain was in a state of flux. Cinemas were converting their large screens into smaller auditoriums as the beginning of the multiple screen buildings that would become large scale multiplexes over the next 30 years. The Majestic finally closed on the 27th of June, 1970. The last films screened there were re-issues of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, which had been running with The Day of the Triffids with Howard Keel. Not long after the Majestic closed the building was sched-uled for demolition. The sturdy construction of the cinema meant it was no easy task, but eventually it was cleared and is now part of the grounds housing the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
