Volume 56, No. 05
Monthly Newsletter of Solbakken Lodge 6-64, Sons of Norway.
Dear Solbakken Members:
Happy Syttende Mai! The observance of 17th of May has often
been compared to the Fourth of July in the US as a celebration
of independence. More correctly, Syttende Mai commemo-
rates the anniversary date of the Constitution of Norway adopt-
ed in 1814. Please attend our Lodge Social on May 3rd
to cel-
ebrate this anniversary with Polse- Viking Dogs!
Our lodge anniversary dinner will be June 7th with payments
being taken at the door. See inside for more information. We will have a Historian re-
port and select a nominating committee for 2018 Officers and committee Chairs. I
know several members attended and enjoyed the Scandinavian Festival at Cal Lu-
theran in early April- they did a wonderful job!
I also wanted to thank Ken Zwick for bringing Bob Meade, Marina high school’s wood-
working teacher to speak to us in April
about the 2 year student project: a
working replica of a 30 foot knarr Viking
ship – VALHALLA.

The April 5, 2017 Lodge Meeting was called to order by President KATHLEEN HARKNESS at 7:42 p.m. There were
28 lodge members (including Bob Meade (our cultural program speaker, who had recently joined the LONG BEACH
Lodge),) and 6 guests present. Membership Chair JUDY IMMEL introduced the guests as Shad Severson, Laurel
Parker, Stephanie Kleinerman, Arla Donahue, Donna Jaecker, and Bob Meade’s mother Georgia Meade. Thank
you to JANET AND DENNIS MAY for acting as Greeters.
KATHLEEN circulated the Meeting Agenda. The Lodge recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the American and
Norwegian National Anthems. The Canadian flag was also flown.
Secretary MARYANN CAZZELL took the Officer Roll Call. In addition to KATHLEEN, JUDY, & herself, the Officers &
Committee Chairs present included Treasurer PETE ANDERSON, Assistant Membership Secretary SIGRID ORTEGA,
Social Chair JANICE STOCZ, Cultural Director ARNE RUSTUNG, Youth & Sports Director and Scholarship Chair KEN
ZWICK, Tubfrim and Publicity Chairs HOWARD AND IRENE BERGH, & Musician BERNICE GUNDERSON. MARYANN
stated that there had been no new correspondence over the past month & that the Minutes of the March 1, 2017
Lodge Meeting were in the Breezes. KEN moved to approve those Minutes, IRENE seconded the motion, and they
were approved as written. The May Breezes deadline is April 14th.
Dinner centered around a baked potato bar. KATHLEEN thanked JUDY IMMEL for substituting in for Committee
Member JUDY HENDERSON. The Committee Chair was PATTI KESSLER (PATTI’s co-Chair ADDIE NINA LISS had been
ill and was unable to attend.) JUDY thanked PATTI and the other Members of her Committee: JANET, DENNIS,
and ED GROVE.
KEN acted as Cultural Chair for this month, and introduced speaker BOB MEADE, who is a “Shop” Teacher at Mari-
na High School in Huntington Beach. BOB presented a power-point presentation and some video of the Norwe-
gian replica ship that he had built along with many of his students. It had received notable press and was launched
in the Huntington Beach Harbor, even later competing in the Christmas Boating Parade.
JUDY presented the Longevity Awards. ARNE received a 50-year membership pin and has also become a Golden Member. Another 50
-year member/Golden member award goes to IRENE McGILL who lives somewhere in the Inyo/Kern Central California area. Efforts are
being made to verify her address and perhaps mail her the pin. JOE LISS earned a 40 year pin but was not present to pick it up. MARGA-
RET WALL also earned a 40-year pin but was not present to collect it, but SHARON LARSON accepted it for her. JIM AND CAROL WEB-
STER each earned 35 year pins but were not present to claim them. PEGGY KENNEDY earned a 15-year pin and collected it. JOHN
HOMME was another 15-year pin winner but was not present. HOWARD, IRENE, KATHLEEN, and LINDA HENKE were all present to
collect the 5-year pins that each had earned. MAGGIE FLYNN had earned a 5-year pin but was not there to receive it. DAVE ENDO and
PAT KING had also earned 5-year pins, but were not present. However JUDY accepted DAVE’s pin and PEGGY KENNEDY accepted the
pin on behalf of PAT.
KEN presented the Sports Awards for 2016. ED was awarded an enamel sykkelmerke. DAVE received all four of
the sykkelmerke pins; since he was not present JUDY accepted them for him. KATHLEEN received bronze, silver
and gold idrettsmerke pins. KEN received enamel idrettsmerke and gang pins. JUDY received gold and enamel
gang pins.

MARYANN received bronze and silver gang pins. ARNE received more gang pins but was not present to receive
them. Editor’s Note: At the end of the meeting HOWARD and IRENE told KEN that they had not received their pins.
KEN apologized for this oversight and promised to award them at the May Lodge meeting.
Under the Committee Reports, JUDY said that she had received no new applications for membership. Since PETE
had already left, KATHLEEN gave the Financial Report for him. The Freya account had been closed and its funds
moved to the Scholarship account. The five scholarships for 2017 had been distributed. About $5,000 had been
transferred from the corporate account to the general account to cover regular Solbakken expenses.
Financial Counselor PAT KELLY handed a $342 check to the Lodge that represented our “profit-sharing” portion of
the earnings from new financial member products sold to us 2016. PAT spoke about the excellent financial standing
and security of the Sons of Norway Bank. Per KATHLEEN the financial pages of the SON website are very clear and
are an excellent resource to anyone wanting to research this financial information.
Under Empathy/Sunshine, RICHARD PARKER was welcomed back. ADDIE NINA is not feeling well.
JANICE called for the recognition of April birthdays and anniversaries. The Lodge sang Happy Birthday in English and
Norwegian to April birthday girls JANET and ARDYTHE WEIGANDT. HOWARD and IRENE were congratulated on cele-
brating their 52 year wedding anniversary this month. JANET won the Opportunity Drawing and donated the $10 to
the Scholarship Fund.
Under Unfinished Business the Lodge discussed the scheduling problems for the Lutefisk Dinner. Committee Chair
CAROLE CARLSON was not present to answer questions. In her stead KATHLEEN reported that the Round Table
would not be available to us for this Dinner until 2018, and the Fullerton Assistance League also was not available
for the November 11th date that CAROLE had wanted. We will need to consider alternate dates.
Under New Business, on April 1st six Solbakken members had attended the Scan Fest at Cal Lutheran University in
Thousand Oaks. No one from our Lodge had attended the Temecula Lodge’s March 26, 2017 Dinner that featured a
performance by the Stoughton Norwegian dancers from Wisconsin.
The meeting adjourned at 8:51 p.m. The next Board Meeting will be April 18, 2017 at ARNE RUSTUNG’s home in
Yorba Linda. The next Lodge Meeting will be May 3, 2017 at the Placentia Round Table. ARNE is the Chairperson
and it is expected that the menu will include Norwegian poulso and other traditional fare for Syttende Mai. Com-
mittee members bring desserts; other members should bring a salad or side dish for eight.
Respectfully Submitted,
Maryann Cazzell
Lodge Secretary

When the Nazi army invaded Norway on April 9, 1940 one of their desired goals was to capture the production of heavy water (deuterium oxide = 2 H2O, an important ingredient to create an atomic bomb) from the Norsk Hy-dro power plant at Vemork (to the east of Rjukan).
The location was easy for the Nazis to defend and near impossible to infiltrate. However, we all know how re-sourceful Norwegians are!
In Operation Grouse, the British Special Operations Exec-utive (SOE) successfully placed four Norwegian nationals as an advance team in the region of the Hardanger Plateau above the plant in October 1942. The unsuccesful Operation Freshman was mounted the following month by British paratroopers; they were to rendezvous with the Norwe-gians of Operation Grouse and proceed to Vemork. This attempt failed when the military glid-ers crashed short of their destination, as did one of the tugs, a Handley Page Halifax bomber. The other Halifax returned to base, but all the other participants were killed in the crashes or captured, interrogated, and executed by the Gestapo.
In February 1943, a team of SOE-trained Norwegian commandos succeeded in destroying the pro-duction facility with a second attempt, Operation Gunnerside. Operation Gunnerside was later evaluated by SOE as the most successful act of sabotage in all of World War II
Thereafter, the Nazis decided to cut their losses and move the remaining heavy water out of Nor-way and take it to Germany. They were able to move the heavy water from Vemork to Rjukan, and then onto a ferry to cross Lake Tinnsjå.
The resistance was able to sink the ferry & the heavy water now sits 1,410 feet deep in the lake. Milorg crippled the Nazi goal of an atomic bomb, but 14 Norwegians died with the heavy water.
The heavy water plant was closed in 1971, and in 1988 the power station became the Norwegian Industrial Work-ers Museum.

CAN YOU MATCH THESE FAMOUS NORWEGIAN LANDMARK?
B. TROLLTUNGA —A permanent fixture of
Mountain Skjeggedal located in Odda.
C. FROGNER PARK — a beautiful urban park in Oslo
Norway where the world-famous Vigelandsparken is
situated. The park contains amazing fountains and
sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland that are inte-
grated in a beautiful setting.
D. URNES STAVE CHURCH — blends several archi-tectural styles into a medieval church that is still standing after 900 years. What is remarkable about this church, however, is that it is made en-tirely of wood.
A. ROROS — a popular copper mining town. Copper
mining started there in the 17th century and contin-
ued for more than 300 years.
E. STEGASTEIN VIEWPOINT — BREATHTAKING view-point 30 meters out from the side of the mountain, 650 meters above the Aurland fjord.

Janice Stocz, Social Director and Judy Immel, Counselor have
been going over committees for each lodge meeting in
preparation for the 2017 year book.
We have realized that each monthly lodge meeting has a
total of one host/hostess & 1 committee member. That is
not enough to serve a full dinner at each lodge meeting.
We need at least 2 more members each month. There-
fore, if we cannot get more volunteers from the lodge
meetings , we will no longer be able to serve full din-
ners. WE WILL HAVE A DESSERT BAR ONLY.
We would like to continue having a full dinner each
month but don't feel we can continue without additional
volunteers.
