Robotics and the ‘Need for Speed’ The Robotics option class finished their first task ‘the
need for speed’ this week. The objective was to get their group robot to five metres ahead of the competition.
Stability and acceleration being the difference in the end at five metres.
The sprint off was a bit noisy as the students do get a little excited and passers-by were well aware that some-thing exciting was happening. Thanks to Daniel T, the
robots are all now faster. He introduced gearing to increase the speed; so much so that we now need to
have a minder to catch the robots before they impact and self-destruct. Team 4 was the winning team and
comprised AJ, Rudolph, Tom and James. The next task is to win at 10metres, then we go cross
country!

Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN On Friday 8
th September School closes for a Jumbo Day in
Dunedin. This is to facilitate all the teachers in our Southern Area Schools Community of Learning (COL) getting togeth-er and sharing good practice. This marks an important step for our COL, or Kahui Ako, as up until now it has been the work of managers such as Gary Pascoe of Roxburgh, (our across schools principal, with assistance from all our schools principals); Mrs Nelson, our across school teacher, and Miss Francis, our within school teacher. We have settled on im-proving writing as our first COL goal, and have contracted professional learning advisers in writing to work with our teachers. Mrs Nelson and the adviser will be travelling to other schools next week. Friday the 8
th will be the first time all of our teach-
ers meet face to face. This is important as we aim for teach-ers across the schools to collaborate in groups relevant to them, such as Year 1-2 or Science teachers to improve learn-ing for all the children in our classes. Teachers who have met and talked face to face are more likely to collaborate effectively on line later, and we expect the majority of our collaboration to happen online.
The Science Fair showed a range of interesting exhibits, from rotting milk to does PE improve your reflexes? Ms Arkless is in Fairlie today with some of the better exhibits, and is helping with the Mackenzie Schools Science Fair. We await the results with interest.
Maths: Carol Butel, our maths adviser, spent a couple of days at the start of the week working with teachers in class, and then with maths curriculum managers on rewriting the Twizel curriculum to reflect new knowledge.
We have four students sitting their Level 1 Ski Instructors qualification this week. Actually less sitting, more performing skiing drills or demonstrations of how to teach. This is one of the many ways STAR and Gateway funding is used to support our students to get advanced qualifications.
Basketball: The boys came within three points of competition leaders Firehunters on Tuesday night, despite a couple of them having tired legs from skiing all day. They will head into the finals this weekend with renewed energy. The girls were also beaten, but are in the playoffs this weekend for 5
th place.
Netball: The senior girls (the Volts) are in the Division 1, 5 final in Oamaru this weekend, playing at 11am. Good Luck! Rugby wrapped up with prizegiving last weekend, and I have-n’t heard much yet except that Sue Ozaki was the Colonial Motel best player; Quinn Pratt was Player of the Year for the Twizel Turbos, and Ben Rogers Player of the Year for the Twizel Torpedoes! Football season is also coming to a close. Skiing: The Aoraki Secondary Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships were postponed before we left Twizel on Sunday, with bad weather at Mt Dobson. The new date is set for this Sunday. The Ohau Snow Club hosted an Interfield race event for nearly sixty children on Sunday, with Jenna Evans and Holly Skinner getting first and second respectively in the U14 girls, and Jessie Evans third in the U10 girls. This weekend we are hosting a National Points Race up at Ohau, with the Giant Slalom on Saturday and the Slalom on Sunday. Next Week: The North Otago Cross Country postponed from last Monday is scheduled for this Monday, the 28
th August.
Rooms 7 and
13 are going ice-skating the same day. On Tuesday 29
th Rm 4 are going skiing at Ohau, and on
Wednesday Room 9 head to Roundhill. On Friday we have a
team of Junior skiers heading to the Roundhill Ski Race Day.
Please Note: School photos day is
now Friday 22nd September.
