Dear Pupils, Parents and Carers,
Here are the challenges for Summer 2, Week 4.
This week we sent out a link to the application Seesaw. This app will be used as a
way for pupils to share their work with their teachers. This will be used in place
of the home learning email.
Please contact the school or your child’s teacher via the home learning email if
you have not received any notice regarding the Seesaw application.
Looking forward to seeing many of you on the 25th and 26th of June!

English Challenges:
Challenge 1: Vocabulary
Read the following Greek Myth. Underline any of the vocabulary that are new to you. Look up the
words in a dictionary and write the definition below.
A Greek Myth – Apollo and the Chimera
Long ago in Ancient Greece there was a strong and handsome soldier called
Apollo. Apollo had a beautiful wife called Athena, who had been kidnapped by an
old king called Minos. Apollo was devastated and vowed to rescue Athena. He
knew that the king would have taken her to his palace in Crete but a monster
called the Chimera fortified this palace.
The Chimera was a ferocious monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat
and a long serpent as a tail. Many intrepid men had travelled to his cave and
tried to beat the Chimera but had been burnt to death by his fiery flame
breath. Although Apollo was a brave man, he did not know how to kill this
enormous monster. His father told him to go to Mount Olympus and ask the
great God Zeus for advice.
Apollo set off immediately and soon reached the great mountain, where the
twelve gods lived. Apollo called for Zeus and begged for his advice. Zeus
appeared before him and explained that although the Chimera was fierce and
strong, his heart was full of poisoned blood. If Apollo could pierce his heart, the
blood would leak into his body and the monster would die an agonising death.
Zeus then gave Apollo a shield to keep the Chimera’s flames away, a sharp sword
to pierce the evil heart and a pair of shoes. These shoes were shoes of
swiftness that made the wearer faster than the speed of light. Apollo thanked
Zeus and set off on the long journey to Crete.
Apollo walked on dry roads, climbed mountains and sailed the great sea until at
last he reached the palace of King Minos. He entered the cave that was home to
the monster and could hear his blood-chilling roar. Apollo crept through the
tunnels and edged closer to the monster’s lair. When he was close enough to
hear the serpents hissing, he put on the shoes of swiftness and got his sword
and shield ready. With a deep breath he ran towards the Chimera with his sword
in the air.
The Chimera roared and flames surrounded Apollo. He held up his shield and ran
in every direction trying to confuse the monster. The serpent hissed, the lion’s
head roared and the flames soared into the air. He kept darting around and soon
the Chimera was dizzy. Apollo ran forward and plunged his sword into the
monster’s heart. The Chimera let out a furious roar and fell to the floor. The
monster was dead at last.
Apollo ran past the body and found his way to the tower where Athena was being
held. He knocked down the door and saw his beautiful wife chained up. Quickly,
he cut the chains and with the help of the shoes of swiftness, Apollo whisked
Athena off to his kingdom and there they lived together happily for the rest of
their lives.

Challenge 3: Mythical monster description
Below are illustrations of Greek myth monsters.
1) Read the character description below and work out who they are describing.
2) Choose a different mythical monster and write a character description for them.
Remember: to make your description interesting, use adjectives and adverbs.
This hissing and spitting creature with hypnotic eyes is
Medusa! Underneath the cold, scaly skin is a woman who
once was breathtakingly beautiful. However, this deathly
creature has hair that is a nest of real venomous snakes and
slippery, sickly skin the shade of watery jade. One glance at
her terrifyingly hideous serpent wig freezes victims into stone
for eternity, which is a spell that can never be broken. This
slithering serpent is highly dangerous- be very careful!
Challenge 4: Subordinating conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions link a main (independent) clause with a subordinate
(dependent) clause (a clause which does not make sense on its own). A
subordinate clause can go at the start, middle (relative) or end of a sentence.
Subordinate clauses DO have verbs as they are a clause.
Example: When we got home, we were hungry.
'When we got home' would not make sense without the main clause 'we were
hungry'.
We were hungry because we hadn’t eaten all day.
Other subordinating connectives include: if, while, after, when, as, until,
before, although, provided that, rather than, even though, since, unless,
before, though...
For each sentence chose the best conjunction:
1. Take the cake out of the oven as soon as/since the timer goes off.
2. Cut the paper in half before/until you decorate it.
3. Don’t cross the road on a sharp bend while/because it is dangerous.
4. Put you socks on before/unless you put your shoes on.
5. Take the cake out of the oven __________________ the timer goes off.
6. Cut the paper in half ________________ you decorate it.
7. Don’t cross the road on a sharp bend ___________________ it is
dangerous.
8. Keep the baked potatoes in the oven for _______________ they need to
cook properly.
9. Keep your hand on the wound ______________ the nurse asks you to take
it off.
10. Only use the apples ___________ they are in date.
Write two sentences of your own using a conjunction at the start. Make sure
they are instructions.

Your next challenge is to write a poem using the same features. Your poem will include:
-Sentences that don’t rhyme
-Interesting vocabulary
-Alliterations
-An image or shape for you to write your poem inside!
