Course Description: College Preparatory Course (P). This is a pre-advance math placement class that is required to take in Mickey Leland Preparatory Academy necessary to meet graduation requirements for math. Students will graph and interpret sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, cosecant and its inverse functions; solve the trigonometric functions using rational and irrational values, learn how to use the unit circle and how to prove the identity of trigonometric functions and will learn how to use double and half angle trigonometric equations as defined by the Previous Texas State Standards for Pre-Calculus and the Current State Standards. Additionally, content on the will be integrated throughout the curriculum.

Textbook: Pearson online text book which they can access through HUB.

Supplies/Materials Needed: Students are expected to bring a pencil every day. Work in pen will not be accepted. Students will also need a binder or notebook to place notes, classwork and homework in. Students will occasionally need computer and online access for homework.

Performance Standards: Instruction in Pre-Calculus will be presented through multiple instructional strategies which include direct instruction, whole class and group dialogue (both verbal and written), and differentiated lessons created to support students in their mathematical development of the “Big Ideas” of Pre-Calculus at all levels.

Successful students will: Demonstrate understanding of major Pre-Calculus concepts Use cognitive skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration

daily Use educational technologies as tools for learning when appropriate, i.e.: online text,

student notebook computers, Google environments, computer assisted learning, and graphing calculators

Academic Grading System: Student evaluation will be based on performance in the following categories. All grades are calculated using the following percentage breakdowns. Each category is described briefly on the following page.

A 99– 100 Test/Projects 50% B 80 – 89 Quizzes (continuous) 20% C 75 – 79 Homework (continuous) 10% D 70 – 74 Assignments (continuous) 20%F below 69

Instructional Activities: We will cover approximately four to six units per semester. The teacher will monitor progress in this course by discussion of the homework and evaluation of individual unit exams; while students will work collaboratively, incorporate the latest technology, explain thinking in written form, and apply skills to real world problems in the form of projects when possible.

Tests: tests will be given in the middle of the cycle and at the end of the cycle over units that were taught in class and are based on the standards outlined by the state of Texas for Pre-Calculus. Students are only allowed to retake test if they are absent the day of the test. Students may re-take tests that they missed at lunch and after school on Wednesday to make up.

Projects and Assignments: Homework is assigned once to twice a week and checked weekly. Students will also be given 3 major projects/papers to do during the semester.

Notebook Policy: It is extremely important that students organize a useful notebook. This notebook should consist of written notes of important concepts and vocabulary learned in the class in the form of warm-ups, explorations, and lectures.

Class Rules and Consequences: The school's policy regarding academic honesty, tardiness, truancy, behavior, use of electronic devices, eligibility for athletics and co-curricular activities, and dress code, as defined in the Student Handbook, will be followed.

Class will be following district and school guidelines for attendance and tardiness. If a student reports to the class up to 7 minutes after the bell without an excuse it will be treated as a tardy, and after 7 minutes it will be treated an absence. Electronic devices such as cell phones, listening devices, and gaming devices are not allowed during class time. Such devices being used in class will be confiscated immediately by the instructor and turned into administration during that school day. Parents will be required to come to the school and pay $15 in order for phones or personal electronics to be returned. Parents

assume all risks associated with students bringing cell phones and other electronics on campus. All personal electronic devices including, but not limited to: iPad’s, iPod’s, tablets, notebooks, and DS are only allowable during breakfast and lunch, not during instructional time. If students need to contact their parents, they should get permission from their teacher or an administrator and use the phone at the front office. This action aligns with the district policy stated in the Student Handbook. Students are not allowed to eat or drink during class. Water and documented medical situations are the only exceptions.

Late Work Policy: At times, students will complete assignments at individually determined paces. However, there will be times when homework will be assigned to all students. These assignments are due the following day to the best of the student’s ability for full credit. Students will only have 3 days to turn in late after the date it is due, after that is will be marked as a zero. If the student was absent, is the responsibility of the student to get with teacher get the homework or can also find the homework on the hub, the student will still have only 3 days after the day he is absent to turn in the assignment before it is marked as a zero.

Attendance: Students with an absence will be allowed to make up a missed exam on the day that the student returns to class.

Academic Integrity: Cheating and Plagiarism of any kind WILL NOT be tolerated in any classes. It is a Level 2 offense and will be handled accordingly by the designated administrator.

Additionally, students will participate in weekly mathematical discussions in which they will solve problems, explain answers, ask and answer questions, and reflect or respond to the posts made by other students. Students will also be using TI-83 graphing calculators in class to assist their learning periodically.

Online Grade Access: Parents and students are expected to monitor course grades and attendance information via the Internet, I update grades on a weekly basis.
