INTRODUCTION:

Thank you for your interest in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program at Doña Ana Community College-New Mexico State University. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound) is a medical field that utilizes sound waves to obtain information and produce images of internal structures/functions of the body. Applicants and interested parties must be aware that sonographers scan patients, which involves direct contact of exposed skin, which includes the chest, abdomen, and pelvic and genital organs as well as the neck and extremities. Training also involves the use of intra-cavity transducers and guidance for biopsy or other interventional procedures.

The program provides students with the academic coursework and clinical internship experience necessary to apply for the national certification examinations in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. There are 2 pathways to qualify for this program; depending on your previous educational background:

• Certificate Program for those applicants who have either a 2-year allied health degree(such as radiologic technology) OR a bachelor’s degree in a medically related science (seeprerequisite and admission requirements for specific content). This format isapproximately 21 months in length (5 semesters).

• Associate Degree Program for those applicants whose background does not qualify themfor the certificate track. This format is approximately 25 months in length (1 semesterminimum of required prerequisite courses & 5 semesters of sonography courses).

Students seeking admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program are required to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the prerequisite coursework and overall GPA. The prerequisite courses must be completed or “in progress” at the time of application to the DMS program. There are restrictions on repeating coursework. Contact the program director for specific criteria.

All DMS courses must be taken in sequence with a grade of “C” or better to remain in the program. Completion of the entire program is required for a student to be eligible to apply for Abdominal and OB/GYN sonography national registry examinations through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).

Please visit our website at http://dacc.nmsu.edu/dms/ for additional information.

The program curriculum will encompass classroom instruction, laboratory training, and hands-on experience.

Program Accreditation: The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program has been awarded continuing programmatic accreditation by the Commission of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP). All CAAHEP accredited programs must go through a rigorous process to assess the quality of the program and its compliance with the Standards. https://www.caahep.org/

Program Goals and Learning Outcomes: The primary goal of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography education program is to prepare competent entry-level general sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Fulfillment of the program’s mission is assessed by the degree to which the program achieves the following student learning outcomes:

Goal 1 Students will be knowledgeable in their field: o Students will have the general and sonographic knowledge to function as a

member of the healthcare team in a variety of healthcare settingso Students will be able to collect and interpret data from charts and patients and use

sound judgment to perform appropriate diagnostic proceduresGoal 2 Students will be clinically proficient:

Program effectiveness is assessed by measuring the following: course pass rate, adequate preparation for clinics, clinical competency, program completion, national certification pass rate, employment rate, and graduate and employer satisfaction on follow-up surveys.

Specific information regarding the program’s national certification rate (credentialing), employment rate, and program completion can be found at: http://dacc.nmsu.edu/dms/program-outcomes-assessment-reports/

Background Checks and Drug Screens: Students who do not pass required drug screens or background checks may be excluded from the selection process and/or ineligible to progress in the program.

Misdemeanor / Felony Information: Students convicted of a misdemeanor or felony may be ineligible to take national certification examinations through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Certification is required to work in the state of New Mexico and may be required in other states. It is the students’ responsibility to petition the agencies for registry eligibility and to meet the regulations set forth by the ARDMS and the ARRT. Contact the program director for additional information.

Application Process: Refer to our website at http://dacc.nmsu.edu/dms/ for Application and Admission Information

To guarantee consideration for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, applications from qualified applicants must be submitted by the deadline date which is April 1st of each year. The program begins in the Fall Semester. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Student Selection Process: This is a limited entry program selecting 10-12 students per year. Selection for the program is based on a point system as well as a comprehensive evaluation of the student’s overall strengths related to the essential qualifications, competencies and functions of the professional diagnostic medical sonographer. See detailed information about the Student Selection Process under the Application and Admission Information tab. http://dacc.nmsu.edu/dms/student-selection-process/

Graduation Requirements & Certification Information: Graduation from the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program requires satisfactory completion of all program requirements, an overall grade point average of “C” or higher, payment of all fees, and no clinical or academic probations.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) as a general learning concentration program. Upon successful completion of this program, students may apply for national certification examinations given by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Abdominal and OB/GYN sonography.

NOTE: Students convicted of a misdemeanor or felony may be ineligible to sit for national certification exams. See the Program Director for additional information.

Fees: Tuition varies depending on residency. Information can be found in the DACC catalog at https://dacc.nmsu.edu/catalogs/ . Additional program fees include:

• Uniforms, name tag & appropriate shoes for your clinical internship• Textbooks/on-line access – this varies since many students purchase extra books

throughout the program, but the required texts are expected to be at least $800 for theentire program. Textbooks can be obtained at the DACC Bookstore.

• A $200.00 fee is assessed to each Clinical Internship course.• Clinical clearance testing. All students must satisfy the clearance criteria for their

assigned clinical site. This may include any/all of the following: current CPR andimmunizations, titers, background check, finger printing, and drug screening. All of theclearance requirements are the personal responsibility and expense of the student.

Clinical Site Internships & Assignments: The clinical experience is extremely important in providing students with the appropriate skills and consequently comprises a large portion of the program curriculum. Each student is assigned to a clinical facility or (facilities) where they will stay for the duration of the clinical internship portion of the program. In some instances, rotation into other facilities may be necessary during this internship for additional experience with certain exams or re-assignment may be necessary due to unforeseen circumstances. Assignments and rotations are to be determined by the program faculty.

Applicants are given the opportunity to indicate their first 5 choices of clinical sites at the time of application. Consideration will be given, when possible, to the student’s preference as well as the needs of each clinical affiliate during the clinical site assignment process. On occasions when more students choose a site than can be accommodated, the clinical site assignment will be done by the program faculty.
