What adds to this uneasiness is that, when he tries to make himself less than man, he becomes ridiculous, which an animal never does. Man alone has the power of self-mutilation and self-destruction, but, as with the mosaic image of Christ in the dome of St. Sophia, which could never be completely effaced, he who was meant to scale mountains can also dig caves, but he still retains the Divine Image. On the positive side, man wants to be more than he is; he attains his true self only when he gets beyond self. When he rebels against God, man makes himself a god. To be a man, one must be a superman. When he refuses to ascend and to realize the deep cravings of his soul for truth and beauty and love without satiety, his failures all immediately register themselves in his conscience and even in his subconscious. Anxieties, rationalizations, excuses psychoses, neuroses, and dread all these are so many compensations for the refusal to be more than he is. Dear Parishioners,

Since I can’t be with you, and therefore, can’t write my

pastoral letters, I thought it might be nice for you to hear

from someone whose prose and preaching are beyond compare –

something mine are definitely not.

I remember seeing and hearing this man on “live TV,” way back in the

late 1950s. This man, by his intelligence, charisma and his supernatural

faith, gripped the attention of the nation we now see as corrupt,

atheistic, degraded, betrayed, persecuted and torn apart by evil political

forces and deserted by the silent majority capable of helping her. I refer,

of course, to Archbishop Sheen. This is an excerpt from is book of

essays called On Being Human.

The Absence of God

The only creature in the universe that is not satisfied with himself is

man. He wants to be more than man, as every market tends to become a

supermarket. What adds to this uneasiness is that, when he tries to make

himself less than man, he becomes ridiculous, which an animal never

does. We say to man in his stupid deeds, “Don’t act like a monkey.”

But, when we see a monkey doing crazy things, we never say, “Don’t

act like a thistle.” The higher the reaches of which one is capable, the

greater the depths to which one can fall. Man alone has the power of

self-mutilation and self-destruction, but, as with the mosaic image of

Christ in the dome of St. Sophia, which could never be completely

effaced, he who was meant to scale mountains can also dig caves, but

he still retains the Divine Image.

On the positive side, man wants to be more than he is; he attains his true

self only when he gets beyond self. When he rebels against God, man

makes himself a god. To be a man, one must be a superman. When he

refuses to ascend and to realize the deep cravings of his soul for truth

and beauty and love without satiety, his failures all immediately register

themselves in his conscience and even in his subconscious. Anxieties,

rationalizations, excuses psychoses, neuroses, and dread – all these are

so many compensations for the refusal to be more than he is.

Dressing for Church

Yes, it’s quite hot. Yes, it’s summer. Still, there is a certain amount

of decorum that should be observed when entering God’s House and

worshipping Him at Mass. These are not the times to sport your

favorite beach-wear, regardless of how cool and fashionable it is.

Nor should shorts and flip-flops rule the day. Our church is very

nicely air-conditioned so, it’s not too much to dress modestly and,

yes, tastefully, for God. Gents should make every effort to wear

dress slacks and, at least, a sport shirt. Ladies are always at their

most beautiful in a tasteful dress or skirt and blouse. Should ladies

choose slacks, remember looser is always more comfortable than

tighter. Think Betty White rather than Kim Kardashian.

Mass Intentions Mass Intention envelopes are available in the back of church. Please

PRINT and completely fill out the front of the envelope. We will do

our best to accommodate your request. Mass Intentions are filled on

a first come, first served basis. Our Mass intention dates are

completely filled for 2020 and 2021 are quickly filling up. The Mass

Intention Envelope MUST be completely filled out in order to take

your request. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to

call the rectory. Thank you very much!
