Called to Serve – Fr. Jeff Kleynjans On Sunday May 29th Fr. Jeff will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of his Ordination into the

Priesthood. There will be a gathering in the Stadium at St. Michael’s at 11.30 a.m. St. Brigid’s

community enjoys tremendous support from Fr Jeff, our Parish Priest, and we ask God to bless him

this day and every day and may his life in God’s service always be filled with joy. Happy Anniversary

Fr. Jeff.

As a Catholic School we are a community, which celebrates our Catholic Story and traditions and recognise Christ is at the centre of our lives:

I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; Whoever eats this bread with

live forever. John 6:51-52 The Gospel for the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ opens with Jesus

making the crowd welcome and talking to them about the kingdom of God. He heals those who

need to be cured and shares God’s abundant gifts (Luke 9:11-17). Jesus’ attitude to the

crowd is very different to the attitude of the disciples toward the crowd. They wanted to

send them away to find their own food but Jesus tells the disciples to feed them and in

doing so gives us a model of how we should respond to others.

Jesus took the bread, he blessed it, broke it and gave it to the disciples to share out. There

is more than enough to feed the vast crowd and twelve baskets full of food are left over.

The actions of our Eucharistic celebration are based on the actions of Jesus in the Gospel

and later at the Last Supper. God lavishes us with his love and abundant gifts so that we

share what we have received with others. When we pass on God’s gifts to others we are

participating in the coming of the kingdom.

The Eucharist, which means ‘thanks’ brings us together as a community and we express our

unity as one with Christ through the eating and drinking together of the Body and Blood of

Christ.

The challenge for us is to be a joyful, faith-filled, celebrating and caring people who use our

gifts to recognise the need in others and to share what we have. One of the virtues of St.

Brigid was her willingness to give to others. The hospitality we extend to all, no matter who

they are, is a reflection on our willingness to love God and one another.

We thank you Lord, for the chance to serve another

and to give ourselves in some small way,

to those not blessed as we are each day.

Our thanks for health, and mind and soul,

to aid us ever toward our goals.

For eyes to see the good in all

A hand to extend before a fall,

For legs to go where the need is great

Learning to love – forgetting to hate,

For ears to hear and a heart to care,

when someone’s cross is hard to bear.

A smile to show our affection

with energy to do the task.

And all we ask, dear Lord, if we may,

Our Confirmation candidates are beginning a new journey. Let us pray for them and their

families as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in June.

Celebrating Fr. Jeff’s 10th Anniversary A celebration to mark the 10th Anniversary of Fr. Jeff’s Ordination will

be held on Sunday, May 29th at 11.30 a.m. in the stadium foyer. I am sure

Fr. Jeff will be happy to see you there to celebrate with him.

If you would like to bring finger food to share, please put your name on

the sheet in the foyer of the Church.

Proposed Change to School Uniform We are gauging parent opinion on a proposed change to the girl’s school uniform to include

navy pants. This would allow for girls to feel more comfortable and be able to participate

fully in the activities on the playground without having modesty concerns and restrictions.

The proposed introduction of pants and shorts/skorts would not be a replacement, but an

alternative giving a choice for the girls to wear either their tunic or pants in winter or their

summer dress or shorts/skorts in summer.

The girl’s uniform would include:

Winter: Tunic / Navy pants with the existing blue long sleeved shirt with peter pan

collar

Summer: Summer Dress / Navy Shorts/skorts with a blue short sleeve shirt with peter

pan collar.

For the girl’s summer uniform we will also look at a combination of a short with fabric panel

like a skirt (skort) as an option.

Most Catholic primary schools have eliminated school ties from the uniform. Ties posed

choking hazards and could get caught up in playground equipment, likewise dangling necklaces,

earrings and bracelets are not to be worn as part of the school uniform. These rules are all

made taking into consideration freedom of play and safety. We encourage all children to be

active participants in play.

Could you please fill out the Parent Survey form being sent home today and return it to

school prior to Wednesday, June 1st 2016.

In order for us to investigate fully the costs and supply of this addition we would be grateful

if you could provide us with a quick response to the proposed change.

Any changes will be made in consultation with the Uniform Committee and the School Board.

Parent/Teacher Interviews –

Early Dismissal for students 1.00 p.m. Parent/Teacher Interviews will take place on Tuesday, June 21st 2016.

This is an opportunity to meet with your child’s home group teacher. We will have an early

dismissal time for students at 1.00 p.m. on this day to enable teachers to commence the

process at 1.30 p.m.

Online Bookings are not open at this stage. We will advise you when you will be able to access

the online booking system closer to the date.

Access to School Grounds during School Hours At St. Brigid’s we seek to provide an open and friendly learning environment and actively

encourage visitors to our school. In our Duty of Care to ensure a safe environment for our

students and staff we recognise the need to protect and preserve our resources.

During School hours the large gates to access the car parking area of the school will be

closed and locked. Access for visitors will be via the pedestrian gate at the top end of our

school and along the footpath to the Administration Building.

As the safety and welfare of our students, staff and resources are our

highest priorities we have a Visitors Register in place. All visitors, including

parent helpers or those visiting the school during school hours are required to

report to the Administration Office prior to undertaking any activity within

the school, where they will be required to sign a ‘Visitors Book’ and will be

assigned a ‘Visitors Badge’ which they must wear at all times within the school.

At the end of their visit, Visitors are required to report to the Administration

Office to return their badge and to ‘sign out’ in the Visitors Book.

Gates will be open for parking for special activities including Mass and school assemblies. If

you are joining us for Mass at 9.00 a.m. please make your way to the Chapel after dropping

your child off to school and leave as soon as Mass is finished. The gates will be closed shortly

after the conclusion of Mass.

Please note: Visitors are defined as all people other than staff member, students and

parent/guardian involved in the task of delivering or collecting children at the start or end

of the school day.

If you are collecting your child early from school or arriving late you are required to

sign in at the school office.

School Photographs – May 30th School photographs will be taken next Monday May 30th. Please ensure your child comes to

school in their correct winter uniform, including school shoes, Runners are NOT to be worn

and hair is to be appropriately tied back with school coloured ribbons. Please see more

information further on in this newsletter.

School Assembly Our next school assembly will be held this Friday, May 27th at 2.30 p.m. in the multipurpose

room. The Senior Learning Community will be leading us at this assembly. Please come and

join us as we celebrate our learning and achievements together.

Sacred Heart of Jesus – Friday, June 3rd

St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal On Friday, June 3rd the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of

Jesus. The Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for all mankind, and our devotion to it is

an expression of our faith in His mercy.

Each year at this time we make a conscious effort to support the work of the St. Vincent de

Paul Society by asking for donations of money and/or non-perishable items with a long use by

date to help the Society provide comfort and support to people in real need, particularly

during the winter months. The donations of money is greatly appreciated to enable the St.

Vincent de Paul Society the ability to purchase or provide the type of support which it is

most needed.

Donations will be accepted throughout the month of June and will be

forwarded to our local St. Vincent de Paul representatives.

Please join us in making a remarkable difference to the lives of those who

are in need in our community.

Year 4 Camp Allambee 2016 Year 4 students and their teachers returned from their two day camp yesterday. It was

great to see the children having fun and challenging themselves, despite the cold on Monday.

They all settled well at night and we had some early risers on Tuesday morning. It was

wonderful to see the children developing their independence and building their social skills.

Many students strengthened their existing friendships and also developed new friendships

by connecting with children in a different setting away from school. Through the hands on

activities children were able to connect with the outdoors and become more aware of the

natural environment. They all seemed to have a positive and happy experience and enjoyed

their time away. Special mention to our parent support Mr. Jim Danahay and Mr. Brian

Andrews.

Many thanks for assisting us in providing this opportunity for the students to learn and

develop from. Thank you also to our teachers: Lauren Sutherland, Leanne McCall, Kyle Denton

and Simon Greely for your willingness to attend camp and to Alysha Devine for your most

welcomed assistance.

Foundation Year Enrolments 2017

Enrolments for families new to our school are well underway. If you know of someone who is

considering St. Brigid’s for their child’s primary education please encourage them to contact

the school as soon as possible.

Invitations for an Interview are sent out in May and the interviews will take place in June

2016.

FOODIE FRIDAY is back again! Forms have been sent home to families, please make

sure that they are returned to school by this Friday 27th May. If you are able to help with

collating orders, or handing out food, please get in touch with the school office as we'd

really appreciate the support.

effort. Every 5 cents raised will go towards our new senior playground.

News from P.E. Specialist– Mrs. Dianne Wilkinson

Our St. Brigid's teachers participated in a Personal Training session with Narelle who is a

qualified Personal Trainer last Monday Afternoon. Activities included Boxing, Running and

Weights. Well done to all the teachers who came and gave it their best. It's good to see

that teachers also need to be able to clear the mind and have a great work out session, a

great way to help them engage in good health practice and positive thinking. It is also a great

way to refresh at the end of the day. Well done and thanks again to all that participated.

Congratulations also to the following students who have made it through to the Southern

Metropolitan Cross Country event on June 23rd: Brodie A, Zach S, Luke R, Jessica R, Mia K,

Will M and Brodie C. We wish them all the very best.

News from the Deputy Principal/Wellbeing – Mr. Simon Greely Camps can be challenging places. There are activities that require courage, activities that

require thinking skills and activities that require a sense of adventure – some require all of

these and more! Children need to be resilient, independent, well-behaved and team-oriented.

Teachers need to be focused, attentive, strict (but flexible), encouraging and supportive.

The beauty of camp is that children can be involved up to their level of ability, confidence or

comfort zone. If they are willing to have a go and try something new every child can achieve

something whilst on camp.

A successful camper doesn’t have to be the fittest or strongest child in the cohort. In my

experience, the most successful campers are the ones who show empathy towards others,

the ones who encourage others and then celebrate small achievements with them, or the

ones who put the team first in group activities or in duty groups. They are the students who

often get the most out of a camp experience.

At St. Brigid’s we are trying to provide a holistic education for our students. Not only do we

focus on Religious Education, English and Mathematics we offer these extra-curricular

opportunities like camps, Harmony in Officer, Cross Country, Interschool Sports, etc.

Hopefully, your child is able to make the most of these opportunities as they make their way

through their school years at St. Brigid’s.

P.S. – Thank you to the MLC teaching staff who were extremely well organized and made sure

every student had the best possible chance to enjoy their Grade 4 camp experience. They

were not paid any extra for their overnight stay and Ken and I are very grateful for their

commitment and wonderful work over the last two days.

Leader of Learning and Teaching - Inquiry and Innovation – Mr Nathan Larkins Mathematics

As I’m sure every parent would realise, School Reports are coming out in the next few weeks.

One of the biggest questions that comes out of reports and the Parent-Teacher Interviews

that follow is ‘What can I do at home to help with Mathematics’.

Some different suggestions that you can do to practise Maths include…

Encourage use of sites such as Matheletics and Studyladder to practise quick recall skills (for all 4 operations)

Use Fractions in cooking, discussing the fraction used when baking items.

Don’t be afraid to ask your child to read the time on digital and analogue clocks.

Challenge your child to answer questions telling the time naming times quarter to the hour and quarter past the hour.

Encourage your child to add, subtract and multiply basic addition facts.

Encouraging your child to do tallying when counting numbers.

Especially in groups of 10 to consider place value knowledge.

Include opportunities to skip count by tens from different numbers.

Include opportunities to skip count from a variety of numbers.

Practise instant recall of multiplication tables.

Include opportunities to talk about numbers, especially place values.

Eg. How many 10’s are in 45, 100’s in 234 etc...

Encourage use of mental maths strategies in adding numbers together shopping.

Eg. How much do the pants and t-shirt cost together.

Discuss how long events take. If possible, even ask your child how long it took to complete.

Helping your child in maths doesn’t have to be formal lessons and/or tutoring. It can be

simple questions

Learning

By now many classes have begun to work on projects and ask for research projects. We

focused on research skills in the last newsletter. Now I’d like to consider the importance of

applying learnt skills.

Leonardo Di Vinci said…

“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply.

Being willing is not enough; we must do.”

― Leonardo da Vinci

Learning involves being able to apply and reuse those skills without teacher support. It is

great to know some information, but being able to use it is another more important skill.

Knowing 2+2 is wonderful in the classroom, but not being able to use it at the shops makes it

useless.

We have all come across a doctor, electrician etc… who know things well, but what happens if

they can not use these skills?

What do we need to do to have students apply their skills? What does it look like?

To truly see a child apply their knowledge, a true open-ended task has them consider and use

the information they know. They should not simply need to retell the information again.

Applying learning for the student may include…

Building and constructing specific things to model what they know (as long as they can

explain the purpose for what they are doing)

Doing Problem solving - giving a context to the work they are undertaking

Designing a play or performance to that they’ve found out (as long as they are putting

their understandings forward in their own words)

Explaining or developing a different use for …..

Putting together a timeline for the uses of …. (to order and explain how things have

developed)

Discussing changes they would make to…. (using knowledge and giving reasons why)

Sometimes applying learning may be challenging, especially when problem solving. Problem

solving involves making mistakes and learning from them because as some wiser people than

me have said…

.... Woops wrong one….

So don’t be afraid if your child comes home wanting to build a model, retell a story or start a

play. They simply want to apply their learning

ST BRIGID’S START AND

FINISH TIMES

School classes commence at 8.45 a.m. and finish at 3.15 p.m. Students should arrive prior to this, but not before 8.30 a.m. The first bell goes at 8.35 a.m. when students may enter their classroom. Students will be supervised from 8.30 a.m. in the morning and until 3.30 p.m. in the afternoon. Please be mindful that staff are committed to meetings and classroom planning outside of these hours and supervision becomes difficult.

As supervision does not commence until 8.30 a.m. Students are not be dropped off unsupervised before 8.30 a.m.

For families who require their child to be at school earlier or later than this, before and after school care is available at St. Brigid’s through Camp Australia. They can be contacted on 1300 105 343 or via their website www.campaustralia.com.au for further information.

We understand that there will be days when for one reason or another, you may be running late in the afternoon. Please contact the school office prior to 3.15 p.m. if you think this will be the case so that a message can be sent to your child/ren and they can be supervised in the office.
