Dear Parents, In preparation for first grade, the children are asked to practice reading sight words over the summer. Sight words (also referred to as Dolch words, high frequency words, or popcorn words) are a collection of words that children should learn to recognize without sounding out. Attached are flash cards of pre-primer and primer sight words. Being familiar with sight words provides an excellent foundation for early reading development. Working on a few sight words at a time, the children may wish to play memory games using copies of the attached flash cards, write the sight words in chalk on the sidewalk, play sight word games on the website ABCYa!, and/or build the sight words with magnetic letters. There are many other resources and ideas for practicing sight words on the Internet. Our goal is for your child to be able to identify all pre-primer sight words by the beginning of first grade and to be able to identify all of the primer sight words by the middle of first grade. The children are also required to read 3 books over the summer. Books may be read by, to, or with your children. Books should be chosen from the Diocesan Reading List for First and Second Grades. For each book, the children should draw a picture of their favorite character and write one sentence describing their favorite character. A form for this assignment is included. This assignment should be turned in the first week of school. Thank you for your support! We are eager to meet the children in August! Happy Reading! Mrs. Hutton and Mrs. van Doorn

Dear Parents,

In preparation for first grade, the children are asked to practice

reading sight words over the summer. Sight words (also referred to as

Dolch words, high frequency words, or popcorn words) are a

collection of words that children should learn to recognize without

sounding out. Attached are flash cards of pre-primer and primer

sight words. Being familiar with sight words provides an excellent

foundation for early reading development. Working on a few sight

words at a time, the children may wish to play memory games using

copies of the attached flash cards, write the sight words in chalk on

the sidewalk, play sight word games on the website ABCYa!, and/or

build the sight words with magnetic letters. There are many other

resources and ideas for practicing sight words on the Internet. Our

goal is for your child to be able to identify all pre-primer sight words

by the beginning of first grade and to be able to identify all of the

primer sight words by the middle of first grade.

The children are also required to read 3 books over the summer.

Books may be read by, to, or with your children. Books should be

chosen from the Diocesan Reading List for First and Second Grades.

For each book, the children should draw a picture of their favorite

character and write one sentence describing their favorite

character. A form for this assignment is included. This assignment

should be turned in the first week of school.

Thank you for your support! We are eager to meet the children in

August!

Happy Reading!
