Dear Padre May 10, 2020 Are there models I can use to help me better understand what a mother is to do or be? A great model for mothers is the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Catechism of the Catholic Church uses the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix when speaking of Mary (CCC 969). These titles are important in explaining Mary’s special relationship to us, her children. We can also use these titles to show how mothers today can relate to their children and spouses. Mary encourages us in our efforts to follow Christ. So it is the duty of all mothers to be a guiding presence to their children as they begin to pray and learn to follow the Lord. As Advocate and Helper, Mary assists us by her own prayer and example. Mary prays for us, and we only have to read Scripture to understand Mary’s example of listening to God. Today’s mothers share the task of praying for their children and spouses. A mother’s example of listening for God can teach her children the importance of seeking God’s will. As Benefactress, Mary is a patron and invites us to receive the graces that only her Son can bestow. In today’s family, a mother offers a constant stream of love and encouragement to her spouse and children. She is the patron of love, a refuge from the harshness that life can bring. As Mediatrix, Mary brings people together to be coworkers with Christ in the work of salvation. Also, a mother is a mediator, a coworker with Christ, helping her children and spouse on their journeys toward salvation. Her family is a little church where heaven and salvation are proclaimed. With great difficulty they were finding their way through thorns and bushes, and ups and downs, and twists and turns, and the man got very tired. He then asked the native fellow, “Are you sure this is the way?” The native fellow looked at him, and in broken English he said, “There is no way. I am the way. In these days it sometimes seems as if things will never get back to “normal.” But the best way we can cope is to trust in the Lord. Just as he promises, he is the way; the way to hope, the way to confidence, the way to trusting once more that we have life. And the life to which he leads is eternal life. Our God has shown that he will spare nothing, even His own Son, to save us. Let us continue to trust in Him. MORNING MASS TIME Summer hours for Morning Mass at St. Lawrence will

On Receiving Communion in the Hand From Bishop Kagan

Father Wayne Sattler has written a helpful explanation of why, for the time being, I have restricted the reception of Holy Communion to the hand. As an addition to Fr. Wayne's statement, I want to offer a bit of canonical background to the issue. While in all things liturgical, Canon Law defers to liturgical law; liturgical law does not supercede Canon Law, but is a compliment to it as the general discipline of our Church. It is correct that communicants have the right to choose one of two ways to receive Holy Communion, just as penitents have the right to choose one of two ways of confessing sins. In both cases, the right is neither absolute nor is it exclusive. The minister of these two sacraments has an equal right not to distribute Holy Communion on the tongue or in the hand, and not to hear a person's confession either anonymously or face-to-face. The general principle of Church law, which includes liturgical law, is that Church law always admits exceptions unless the proper authority (pope or bishop) makes it explicit that there is no exception to it. Let us also keep in mind those who are now making an issue of a certain form and discipline have missed what is essential altogether. It is not our physical posture that determines our moral and spiritual worthiness to receive Holy Communion, it is the state of our souls.

(Fr. Sattler’s explanation can be found at bismarckdiocese.com)
