Dear Members and SupportersThis week we welcome Caldy back to Volac Park. Caldy are “the friendly club” and last year’s away trip was one of the highlights of the season. An old fashioned clubhouse set in lovely countryside with views towards Wales in the distance. This year their performances have been outstanding and I’m pleased to see them keeping rugby strong in the north west of England.

Round 1 of the Heineken cup last week resulted in questions about the strength of premiership rugby with Leinster smashing Wasps 52–3 in Pool 1. With a strong national team presence it looks good for Irish rugby but that does not reflect well on England. The advantage for the Irish is that with large concentrations of the national squad in just a few teams playing top flight European rugby they are on a permanent warm up for the Six Nations. But would we want an Irish rugby life without a proper league? Not in National 1 we wouldn’t. Anyway Newcastle’s

26 points to 25 away win against Toulon shows that when its a non-national team against another non-national team anything can happen.

Thursday night saw the first open evening at Volac Park for our new Academy. SCL our education provider went through the curriculum of the BTEC course and Simon Leader set the scene for the practical side following which everyone was then invited to watch the first team going through their training regime in readiness for the Caldy game. This was the first of 3 open evenings and with 2 more to follow towards Christmas and Easter.

Back to today and let’s hope we leave the Blackheath game firmly behind us today and get back on track.

match reportvs blackheath

Cambridge loss after two straight wins a “major wakeup call”...

Cambridge 24 Blackheath 43

The Blood and Sand lost out to Blackheath at Volac park after two straight wins over Plymouth Albion and Ampthill, with Head coach Richie Williams saying it provides a “major wakeup call” to his side.

“We were clearly second best, we didn’t start particularly well. Putting the result aside we’ve started the season pretty well. We can take massive learning points from today and take the biggest point which is if we don’t approach the game with the same mindset as normally, then we will come unstuck.”

That was the assessment of Cambridge Rugby Head coach Richie Williams, after watching his side fall to a 43–24 defeat to Blackheath on Saturday afternoon.

The game started with Cambridge on the backfoot, as they would remain all afternoon, with James Shanahan’s men showing their experience and pragmatism, aided by former Blood and Sand captain Stef Liebenberg, orchestrating proceedings.

The set-piece was also a big factor, with the Blackheath pack constantly on the front foot, allowing the Cambridge forwards no wiggle room at scrum time.

The first points of the game came via the boot of Mark Cooke, 10 minutes in, with the Blackheath fly-half taking the 3 points option after his forwards were rewarded for their dominance at the scrum.

Lawrence Rayner replied for the Blood and Sand, levelling the scores with 3 points of his own.

Blackheath then began to break away, with Jake Lloyd scoring a brace, before Jake McCloud was able to reply with his first of two tries for the afternoon for the Blood and Sand, following a Mike Ayrton break in midfield.

“I thought Jake McCloud was his usual self, he scored two tries and was easily our best player out there today.”, Williams added, “I think the players have got to learn quickly from that if we don’t have the same attacking and defensive intent week in week out, we’re going to have a really long, hard season.”

The Blood and Sand will in some ways feel hard done by, with 3 of their players, captain Mike Ayrton, hooker Alex Rayment and replacement back-row forward Wade Schoeman all spending time in the sin bin, the former for an awkward collision under the high-ball.

Williams recognised however that in every case the referee has to follow to how he sees it and the letter of the law.

“You’re not going to win a game with three players in the sin bin, so that was 50 minutes that we were with 14 players, against a well drilled Blackheath, coached well by Shanners”

Further tries from Nilsson, Cooke and Foster, before and after the halftime break, took Blackheath to the bonus point required.

A further try, their sixth of the afternoon, from another former Blood and Sand player, Jack Daly, was sandwiched in between two scores in the last 20 minutes from Blood and Sand player’s Mike Ayrton and Jake McCloud.

Williams, despite the disappointment of defeat, quickly turned his attention to this week’s fixture against Caldy “I think Caldy are another side that pride themselves on their scrummaging, so that is probably good for us, going into training in the next with the mindset that our scrum will have to be 100 times better than it was last week”.

Best Served Cold...

Ouch. Losing last week and two columns in two weeks is pain. I should tell you that I tend to type these with two thumbs on the notes page on my mobile. Two increasingly arthritic thumbs as it goes – the legacy of two and a half decades of contact sports and over a decade getting wet and frozen at various rugby clubs up and down the country. They don’t make recovery shakes for opposable thumbs. Still, I suppose that’s what pockets are for.

Pockets are also for protecting scrum halves and popping over a drop goal. The second of those is a rarity these days. The first is usually preventable. Last week, for whatever reason, our former skipper sat in an armchair in a comfortable pocket on a familiar pitch and did his job with ease. It cost us dearly. It’s another lesson because last week’s performance for the most part was a long way removed from that at Ampthill – one of the best I’ve ever seen from a team in Blood & Sand. It’ll be put in perspective at the end of the season when Club finish in the top three, but we have to aspire to more than being beaten by a masterclass.

We can do it, too. Plymouth and Ampthill proved that. And I know for a fact that last week hurt players

and coaches alike. They’ll strive to learn from it and redouble their already considerable efforts. We’re a way away from the finished article but tries like the Mike Ayrton/Jake McCloud combination from last week are our stock-in trade. And we’re good at it. Really good. This side will, spectacularly, come of age, and soon.

Shameless plug time – if you haven’t already heard it, this week’s Tuesday Night Sport was pretty decent. You can listen again on the iPlayer or via, er, Listen Again on the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire website. We’ll be back between 7 and 10 pm on Tuesday week and you’ll be able to hear, among other things, reaction to our trip to Cinderford. Today, though, we welcome Caldy to Grantchester Road. They’ve done a fantastic job since promotion to National League One. In the nicest possible way, let’s hope they don’t enjoy the long trip down from the Wirral too much today. So please, let’s get the 16th man back in full voice this afternoon!

The U11s continue to build on their previous seasons outstanding match performances and remain a keen, determined and brave group of boys.

This season has seen the introduction of kicking (both starting/re-starts and in open play) and competitive hooking of the ball at the scrum.

The focus of our training remains very much on teaching and improving core skills of running hard and straight with ball in hand, passing, and strong aggressive tackling. The entire squad of boys continues to improve and develop these core skills.

We are consistently able to field strong teams which give any opposition (home or away) a tough battle. The squad demonstrated this ability at the recent Cambridge festival, hosted by Shelford RC, where we came away with eights wins, two draws and one loss.

The coaching and management team have a strong one-squad inclusive ethos with the aim of developing each boy as an individual in order to create an

mini&youthsectionsponsored by

aggressive, determined yet selfless team. In the fore front of all our minds when coaching the team are the RFU core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Thanks should go to the coaching team who turn out every week for training and matches. Currently the boys receive excellent coaching support from Manuel Valenzuela, Simon Parrish and Rob Gardiner. We are also very lucky to have an active and engaged management team of Ryan Bridger, Keith Martin and Philip Perkins. A lot of tireless mid-week work goes into ensuing match days work smoothly and on match days the management team take control of pitch monitoring, match reports and match photos.

In conclusion, we have a happy group of boys, growing in numbers, who come to our club because they enjoy every aspect of the game of rugby.
