Dear Friends,There is an urgent need for the voices of the artists of our 56th Season to be shared.

Throughout the season the histories and narratives of marginalized voices in America and around the world are explored.

I have been inspired by the writings of American philosopher Richard Rorty, who I learned about while working on the upcoming Great Jones Rep/Motus collaboration. In Rorty’s utopia, personal narratives build solidarity “by increasing our sensitivity to the particular details of the pain and humiliation of other, unfamiliar sorts of people.”

Storytelling is powerful. Reality is often too complicated and stories give us a way to process, question, and shape how we think about each other.

I hope that you will join us at La MaMa as we bear witness to these stories.

About The CoverOur 56th Season celebrates the creative and collective histories of La MaMa with the publication of Ellen Stewart Presents: Fifty Years of La MaMa Experimental Theatre by Cindy Rosenthal which traces the evolution of La MaMa through its poster art. Throughout the season we will be investigating this history by creating new designs inspired by La MaMa’s past.

Lu! Lu! Lu! Lu! An Evening Celebrating Spiderwoman Theater’s 40 Years Come help celebrate 40 years of a beloved stalwart of New York’s downtown scene. A gala theatrical evening of tributes by stellar admirers internationally honors Spiderwoman’s contributions to Native, feminist, and avant-garde theatre. Samples of the collective’s unforgettable “story weaving” will manifest the magical spell that can be summoned, with everything culminating in a rousing dance party by First Nations electronic group - A Tribe Called Red. Alessandro Sciarroni creates visceral, visual, high-endurance work, that defies categorization by combining dance, performance art, and ritual. Taking simple, repetitive choreography to its extremes, he pushes dancers to their physical limits to uncover obsession, fear, and vulnerability. Sciarroni’s works have been performed in his native Italy and at festivals and venues all over the world.

Kingdom Of Earth deals poignantly with ownership of land, racial discrimination and familial dysfunction — themes that resonate deeply in a South African context. This award-winning production played to standing ovations at the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival and was lauded by Williams’ aficionados as one of the finest productions of this savage, sexy and darkly-comic play.

Where do you belong when your government suppresses your basic right to expression? What do you do when your government imprisons you for making art? How would you survive one of the most brutal prison systems in the world? Belarus Free Theatre combines forces with Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina, who makes her New York stage debut, in a searing performance on how art persists under oppression. Through the prism of persecuted artists who will not be silenced, Burning Doors reveals how artists living under dictatorships illuminate the knife-edge of complacency in democratic societies, reminding us of the true cost of freedom and dangers of inertia.

Belarus Free Theatre, the leading refugee-led theatre company in the UK and the only theatre in Europe banned by its own government on political grounds, draws on its own experience of political oppression and continues its campaign to stand up for artistic freedom and human rights across the globe.

ALAXSXA | ALASKA is a theatrical collage of multimedia, puppetry, and Central Yup’ik drum and dance, illuminating striking moments of cross-cultural encounter in the epic, changing landscapes of Alaska. Directed by Ping Chong and Ryan Conarro, ALAXSXA | ALASKA features Conarro and Gary Upay’aq Beaver (Central Yup’ik), along with puppeteer Justin Perkins. The three performers use movement and puppetry to reveal a series of little-known historical narratives of collisions between people and cultures in Alaska. These histories—at times humorous, at times tragic—juxtapose against Beaver and Conarro’s own personal memories as “insider” and “outsider” in the Last Frontier.

Ping Chong + Company produces theatrical works addressing the important cultural and civic issues of our times, striving to reach the widest audiences with the greatest level of artistic innovation and social integrity. In 2015, Ping Chong was honored with the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the United States government, presented to him by President Barack Obama.

Halloween Unleashed: Dancing Bones, Tasting Darkness and the Skeleton Inside, created by Punk Ballerina, Karole Armitage and her company, Armitage Gone! Dance, is a subversive comedy designed to spook families and adults alike in a live action rendition of Disney’s 1929 animated masterpiece, The Skeleton Dance. Combined with images from the wild, capricious street theatre of Haitian carnival, Halloween offers punk attitude and visual high-jinxes: bones dance alone; shoes fly off feet; skeletons turn into musical instruments. Over the past 30 years, Armitage and her dancers have shaped the evolution of contemporary dance through the creation and performance of new works. The most recent incarnation of the company, Armitage Gone! Dance (AG!D), was launched in 2004 when Armitage returned to the U.S. after 15 years of working abroad. The core of the company’s work centers on a series of dance “dreamscapes” that take the viewer on a poetic journey to evoke mysterious landscapes of reverie, dream, and altered consciousness.

Conquest Of The Universe Or When Queens CollideWritten by Charles Ludlam Directed by Everett Quinton

On the 50th Anniversary of The Ridiculous Theatrical Company and 30 years since Ludlam’s death, La MaMa celebrates the artistry of Charles Ludlam. A fully produced revival of Ludlam’s early masterwork Conquest of the Universe or When Queens Collide, directed by Everett Quinton, is the centerpiece of the Ludlam celebration. Conquest is an epic collage inspired by Marlowe’s Tamburlaine the Great that is as outrageous and timely today as when first performed in 1967. In addition to Conquest, readings, panels, and other special events will be presented in association with Howl Arts.

Charles Ludlam was an American actor, director, and playwright. Ludlam joined John Vaccaro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous and after a falling out became founder of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company in New York City in 1967. He won six Obie Awards, the Rosamund Gilder Award for distinguished achievement in the theater in 1986, and in 2009, Ludlam was inducted posthumously into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Everett Quinton, is an actor, director and playwright and was a longtime member of Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company collaborating in over 75 of productions as actor, director and costume designer.

In the era of “alternative truth”, it is timely to revisit three 1960s national traumas: the assassinations of President Kennedy, his brother, and Reverend Martin Luther King, exploring the shrouded, dense cobwebs of multiple conspiracy theories that attempt to justify these senseless acts. The main protagonists, guided by fate as marionettes are powered by their strings, inexorably approach the Grassy Knoll.

The Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre (CAMT) is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional and not-so-traditional puppetry. Since founding the company in 1990, they have created over 20 original productions and garnered accolades from the press and dedicated audiences aged 5 to 105.

Upside Down narrates the story of a young, able-bodied woman accidentally entering a world populated by people who dress, act, and move in the opposite way: a world that contradicts “normality.” Performed by a cast of actors with disabilities, this production upends the concept of daily life, social-norms, and diversity.

Teatro Patologico was founded by Dario D’Ambrosi, one of Italy’s most distinguished theatre artists, who has made a career of productions about people with psychiatric disabilities, devising productions that portray their unique perspective on life. Zco/Danceproject was founded in 2014 by esteemed dancer, actress, and model Zazel-Chavah O’Garra. The company is a dynamic, physically integrated dance company, which consists of dancers “dancing beyond disability.”

Presenting a humorous look on a bitter topic, the performers reflect on what the community has achieved (or not) using social media. Featuring stories by Daniel Diaz, Julia Dobner-Pereira, Chloe Piazza and Shane Shane.

Pioneers Go East Collective creates music-performance that merges storytelling and video documentary. The collective explores stories that are not usually investigated, and which reflect social-political vulnerabilities and otherness.

Italy’s Motus Theatre returns to direct and devise Panorama, a new work in collaboration with the Great Jones Repertory Company. Contemporary philosopher and feminist Rosi Braidotti wrote about a “belonging open to Multiplicities,” proposing a post-nationalistic identity for all the populations of the world, focusing on the concept of fluid identity and nomad identity. Motus and Great Jones Repertory Company delve into the heart of this issue, interweaving their personal histories of identity, departure, and remembrance to create new existential panoramas in which migration is actually an intrinsic existential condition.

The companies have devised this work together, building performance up from interviews, improvisations, and associated research in pursuit of an answer to the core question: how can we move from the dominant force, - “we the people” - to the process of perpetually becoming – “we are the other”? Panorama is a dynamic and open exploration upon the human need to be in movement, in flux.

Combining a Dr Strangelove-inspired performance with a daring forum for public conversation, Unexploded Ordnances (UXO) explores aging, anxiety, hidden desires and how to look forward when the future is uncertain.

In our Situation Room, 12 audience members are invited to become a Council of Elders to discuss the global issues of the day, as the company weaves in satirical insights and humour. Adopting the characters of a bombastic general and ineffectual president, Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver of Split Britches lace this interactive piece with both playful urgency and lethargy, encouraging discussion about the political landscape. The pioneering theatre-makers see Unexploded Ordnances as a metaphor for the unexplored potential in elders and hope to uncover buried resources in us all.

Split Britches was founded 34 years ago by Peggy Shaw, Lois Weaver, and Deb Margolin in New York City. Since 1980, they have transformed the landscape of queer theatre with their vaudevillian satirical gender-bending performance.

La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club is excited to announce A Poster History of La MaMa’s Downtown Community — an upcoming exhibit that explores the history of the off-off-Broadway theatre movement through a selection of original posters from La MaMa’s Archives.

This exhibit documents the history of downtown theatre, the changing aesthetic vernaculars of theatrical posters, and the transformation of print technologies over the past 55 years. It includes posters from every decade since La MaMa’s founding in 1961, including the hand-painted boards that announced La MaMa’s inaugural season (1961-1962) and the digital print created for the theater’s 50th anniversary in 2011. Many of these materials are featured in Cindy Rosenthal’s forthcoming book, Ellen Stewart Presents: Fifty Years of La MaMa Experimental Theatre (University of Michigan Press, 2017).

EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSSARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGEEvery Friday, World Theatre Class students from Sarah Lawrence visit La MaMa to attend workshops with a La MaMa artist and to see a production in one of La MaMa’s performance venues.

TRINITY/LA MAMAThe Trinity/La MaMa Program utilizes the landscape and history of New York City as a catalyst for an intensive study in the arts. The semester is structured to provide full immersion in the New York City theatre, dance, and performance communities as well as other arts genres with the goal of fostering artistic, academic, and personal growth. Students participate in La MaMa artist workshops and internships.

EUGENE LANG COLLEGE, THE NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY FOR LIBERAL ARTSEugene Lang has had a close partnership with La MaMa for more than a decade. Theatre courses have utilized La MaMa’s Archives to enhance student curricula. Every year, Eugene Lang alumni gather at La MaMa to showcase new work that has been inspired by La MaMa’s rich theatre history.

SEOUL INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS Seoul Institute of the Arts is a leading arts institution in Korea, educating more than 2,400 students and creative professionals in 14 different artistic disciplines. Every season, La MaMa and Seoul Institute of the Arts bring Korean students to La MaMa for a four-month internship. In 2009, La MaMa and SIA founded CultureHub together.

SAFE HARBORS INDIGENOUS COLLECTIVEMurielle Borst-Tarrant | Director Safe Harbors promotes Indigenous arts and culture within the broader American theatre to combat stereotypes and support vibrant Native communities. It is a new effort to develop an ongoing dialogue with policymakers about how cultural and socioeconomic issues can be approached through theatrical performances, panel conversations, educational activities, and cultural events.

PROGRAMS AT LA MAMALA MAMA UMBRIA INTERNATIONALBetween June and August, students and teachers reside at La MaMa Umbria, a 700-year-old historic building that has been transformed into a work center and artists’ residence. It is located in the Umbrian hillside just outside the town of Spoleto, fewer than two hours from Rome. Immersed in the creative, natural, and regenerative environment of Umbria, culturally diverse artists live together while working on productions or participating in workshops to develop their artistic skills.

LA GALLERIAFounded in 1984, La MaMa La Galleria is a nonprofit gallery committed to nurturing artistic experimentation. La Galleria serves its neighborhood as a venue that encourages an active dialogue between the visual arts, new media, performance, curatorial and educational projects. Its focus is to offer programming that reaches beyond the expectations of traditional gallery and institutional exhibition-making, to a diverse and intergenerational audience. As a non-profit, La Galleria is able to provide artists and curators with unique exhibition opportunities that are largely out of reach in a commercial gallery setting.

THE DOWNSTAIRS LOUNGELa MaMa newest space located outside The Downstairs Theatre. La MaMa’s very own Nicky Paraiso hosts an intimate evening of music and comedy transforming The Downstairs into a paradise lounge.
