Priests in religious orders, who take the vow of poverty, used to write in their books Ad usum,” meaning that they did not ownthe book, but that it was merely for their use.I like that idea—and it helps assuage the guilt of usingso very many books! Dear friends in the Lord,

I’ve confessed to you in the past my love affair with books. I wish that I could report that storing 40 heavy book boxes in my office since my arrival four years ago—or the prospect of mov-ing them all into the new rectory next month—had weakened my inordinate attachment to the things, but… no. The list of new books I want to read and classics I want to re-read seems endless. I blame the addiction on my mother, who read to me every night when I was a toddler. (Parents, be-ware: you might be creating a monster!)

Goëthe wrote that one “should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” My first spiritual director’s advice wasn’t very different: always to be reading one good book on scripture or theology or spirituality, and at the same time—and some-times even more important—a novel, to make sure that the religious imagination remains connected to the stuff of ordinary life. That counsel has served me well over the years.

Friends and parishioners often ask me what I’m reading. These are the books at my bedside right now: The Guarded Gate: Bigotry, Eugenics and the Law That Kept Two Generations of Jews, Italians, and Other European Immigrants Out of America by Daniel Okrent is a sad story of the triumph of ignorance in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During that time immi-gration from Europe increased many-fold, and much of it was of Catholics and Jews from southern and eastern Europe. Parts of the political establishment feared being outnumbered by these “undesirables,” and eventually joined forces with the growing junk science of eugenics in order to jus-tify keeping lesser “races” out of America. I need not add that the book is a cautionary tale for us in the present day.

And in preparation for next year’s Holy Land pilgrimage, I’m re-reading From the Holy Moun-tain by William Dalrymple. In the spring of the year 587, the monks John Moschos and his pupil Sophronius embarked on a remarkable expedition from the shores of Bosphorus to the sand dunes of Egypt. Dalrymple retraces the footsteps of these monks, creating a moving elegy to the slowly dying civilization of Eastern Christianity and the people who are struggling to keep its flame alive. Priests in religious orders, who take the vow of poverty, used to write in their books “Ad usum,” meaning that they did not “own” the book, but that it was merely for their “use.” I like that idea—and it helps assuage the guilt of “using” so very many books! But it also means that I’m happy to share. If I write or preach about a book that piques your interest, just let me know, and I’ll gladly pass it along.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

Many thanks to Father Fred Wendel and Father Richard Tibbetts, who celebrate Masses for us this weekend!

Father Fred was IHM’s pastor 1998-2002,

and he just retired July 1.

Father Richard is the retired pastor of Holy

Cross Church in Tucker.

THANK YOU to the hundreds of households who have responded with a pledge to the 2019 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal! Our gifts to the Appeal each year support the countless works of faith and mercy that no single parish could ever undertake alone—like the formation of our future priests.

Our gifts also help secure the fiscal stability of our own parish, since any funds received over our parish goal return to us at IHM to help us meet the many minis-try needs before us and to retire our church and rectory construction debt.

If you have not yet had an opportunity to make your pledge, please be generous. For more information, and to donate online, go to appeal.archatl.com.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, ‘….tell her to help me.’ The Lord said to her in reply: ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and wor-ried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the

better part and it will not be taken from her.’”' - Luke 10:40-42 Few stories in Scripture better portray the fact that stewardship is an attitude, not an activity. Martha was busy, but Mary had the right attitude. Prayer and time spent with Christ are essential.

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? A bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in death the Christian steward-ship you practice in life. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Will. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to IHM become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at [email protected] or 404-497-9440.

GIVE BY TEXT! You can now make a contribution to IHM with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 404-948-4757. In the message just indicate the amount you would like to contribute. (Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount. Example: $25.) Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!

GETTING TO KNOW OUR CATECHISTS

Dora D'Andrea, First Communion Preparation

Where are you from, and how long have you been at IHM? I'm from Caracas, Venezuela and I have been at IHM for about 10 years.

What is your “day job”? I’m a Principal Engineer at the Department of Watershed Management, DeKalb County. I manage capital improvement projects for the Scott Candler Water Treat-ment Plant and for the County Sanitary Sewer System.

How did you first become involved in this ministry? When I signed up my children for the Gift program I realized they were looking for help. I met Ms. Alicia who welcomed me and my daughter with open arms and keeps inspiring us every year to be part of this great program

What do you find most rewarding about it? I’m very lucky to be pat of this ministry. I consider this the most important job I have because it gives me the opportunity to do something Jesus asked from all of us, "Spread the Good News." It is a special privilege being able to talk to children about Jesus and the sacraments and teaching them the meaning of life at their level of comprehension. Every year I learn much more than I give. When I see the chil-dren from the previous year greeting me in the halls, I feel very happy.
