Transcript of DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, · Claudia Burcke Sheila Busacco. William Camp Lea Cappella. Deborah...

2015 was a great year for the Seneca Park Zoo Society. It was a year marked by continued growth and financial sustainability, new collaborations with like-minded partners, and an intensive strategic and master planning process with Monroe County.

We embraced new mission and vision statements that accurately reflect our daily work and aspirations:

Pamela Reed SanchezExecutive DirectorSeneca Park Zoo Society

Stephen BrownPresident, Board of Trustees Seneca Park Zoo Society

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

IN SHORT-HAND, OUR MISSION IS THIS: CONNECT. CARE. CONSERVE. Recognizing that much of the public is unaware of the conservation science that occurs at zoos, and the conservation research zoos support, the Zoo Society focused much of its efforts in 2015 toward better telling our story to our guests and to our community. On site, we installed new banners asking people to choose to save lemurs, Bornean orangutans, snow leopards, African elephants, North American river otters, and more. We also changed our interpretive programming to ensure that our guests regularly hear about the Zoo’s role in ensuring species survival, as well as what they, as individuals, can do to make a difference for the environment.

We also worked to create awareness of the importance of regional conservation efforts, through projects such as One Cubic Foot, a biodiversity assessment of the Genesee River which combines the art of photographer David Liittschwager with the science of DNA barcoding. One Cubic Foot brought together nearly 30 like-minded partners, including corporations, foundations, nonprofits, government agencies, and the Smithsonian Institution, all committed to the health of the Genesee River.

In 2015 we also successfully expanded our base of supporters; we launched a new elite level membership, Partners in Conservation, significantly grew our endowment, and increased our attendance, membership, and corporate support. Enrollment in our educational programs grew, as did the number of community members served by our outreach programs, and the number of people in the public who heard our stories through media coverage.

As the nonprofit partners to Monroe County’s Seneca Park Zoo, we are proud to support the County’s new master plan, which envisions ten years of improvements to your Zoo, including new world-class animal habitats based on ecosystems, and new guest amenities to enhance your visit and grow attendance and investment in your Zoo.

As we look to execute our mission in 2016, we are excited about continuing to expand our impact locally and globally. We thank you for your continued support.

MISSION: Seneca Park Zoo inspires our community to connect, care for, and conserve wildlife and wild places.

VISION: Seneca Park Zoo will be a national leader in education and conservation action for species survival.

• We surpassed our attendance numbers by 1.2% in 2014 for a total of 335,663.

• More than 40,000 school children attended the Zoo as part of our education program.

• ZooCamps had the highest enrollment numbers ever.

• Nearly 3,000 children were served through birthday parties, a 20% increase from the previous year.

• ZooMobile served 21,000 people through 358 programs during the course of the year.

• Our website was viewed more than 1.2 million times in 2015. Our social channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) saw a 29% increase in followers from last year.

• We launched Member Mornings, exclusive daily member-only animal encounters.

• Guests experienced animal encounters throughout the day at our new Nature Connection stage.

Your support helped us with our goal of supporting the health and welfare of the animals in our care and their relatives in nature. Our community of supporters in 2015 reached new milestones.

CARE

CONNECTWe are committed to providing our community with experiences that will connect them to wildlife and wild places. In 2015 we created opportunities to engage more people in a wide array of experiences.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT: • Zoo volunteers, including docents, general volunteers, interns, ZooTeens and

Board members delivered more than 22,500 hours of support for the Zoo and our programs! We would not be able to achieve our mission without our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.

• Our ZooTeen program expanded to more than 120 teens and leaders, delivering more than 8,000 volunteer hours sharing our message and helping to educate guests.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: • We launched our new Partners in Conservation membership program, offering

premium membership levels to our biggest supporters. Through this effort we increased support by 49%.

• We introduced the Head of the Herd membership loyalty program, thanking the more than 1,000 households who have been members for 10 years or more.

• Our Forever Wild Society has grown to include 56 members who include the Seneca Park Zoo Society in their estate plans. In addition, more than $400,000 was added to the endowment in 2015.

• Corporate sponsorships grew by 5% in 2015 and Foundation support was the highest the Society has ever achieved.

• Events continue to drive financial support and engagement. Zoobilation and ZooBrew in particular had their best years ever in 2015!

6. 7.

• We brought to Rochester One Cubic Foot, an initiative that brought together nationally renowned scientists and photographers with nearly 30 community partners to assess the biodiversity of the Genesee River, using art to connect people with science and the environment.

• Butterfly Beltway continued to expand; we built our first mega garden in partnership with the Nature Conservancy. More than 100 gardens were planted or maintained in 2015.

• We asked our guests to support African penguin conservation when they purchased admission, resulting in nearly $13,000 raised to grant to the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, SANCCOB.

• Our patrons in the ZooShop contributed more than $9,600 for elephant conservation, which the Society granted to the International Elephant Foundation (IEF). These funds help support specific initiatives aimed at putting a stop to poaching.

• Member gifts and a portion of ZooBoo ticket purchases were directed to support Health In Harmony, which manages a human health clinic in Borneo, adjacent to the 223,000-acre Gunung Palung National Park which is home to 2,500 of the world’s last remaining Bornean orangutans in nature.

• Fundraising from our annual Jungle Jog 5K and from Party Madagascar (organized by our amazing docents) resulted in more than $15,700 granted to organizations supporting conservation science and research in Madagascar, including Centre ValBio and the Duke Lemur Center.

• Through these partnerships and more, we have made a greater impact in 2015. Our conservation fundraising increased by 15% in 2015 from the prior year and has grown 306% since 2013.

We are a conservation organization at heart and had a great year driving conservation efforts both here at the Zoo and in the field.
