English

Using our class readers, we have been practising directed writing: a tricky balance of

showing you have read the passage but also using your own imagination! Below is just a

few examples of some of the fantastic work Rise pupils have produced for these style of

tasks:

As the sunlight started to rise, I planned to venture out into the streets and try to gather a few coins to get myself some food.

Writing as homeless teen, Link.

As I marched into the centre to complete my mission, I met two scruffy youngsters.

Writing as ex-military man, Shelter

Strangely, here was grey smoke flying in the air, looking like a grey cloud.

Writing as Bruno, a German child observing a concentration camp.

The sun was beaming onto my cave as I slowly got to my feet. Where was I?

Writing as Michael, the shipwrecked kid.

Oh, well, ummm…okay, we were on our way to Bolvangar and I distinctly remember a few men slumped over dead, littered with arrows.

Writing as John Faa Leader of the Gyptians.

Wearily, I dragged my shovel in the dust behind me as I made my way slowly towards the wooden shack, the blisters on my ankle rubbing painfully against my sweat-filled boot.

Writing as Stanley, prisoner at Camp Green Lake.

Science Music

Maths

All pupils at the Rise are ready to shine as they prepare for their class performances for our Christmas Celebration on 13

th December; we

hope you all enjoyed it!

Maths is quickly becoming one of our most popular subjects at The Rise with all pupils engag-ing in lessons. We have seen a large increase in pupils’ confidence since the introduction of our “Maths Stars” reward system. We have seen some really bright stars this term! We have been focusing on “averages” and “range” since October and using manipulatives as a support which the pupils have really enjoyed. A real highlight has been the pupils’ progress in data handling (tally charts, bar charts etc.) and we loved converting data into beautifully accurate graphs. Well done to all pupils that have made maths a huge success this term.

Mrs Tobias

Science continues to engage and amaze the pu-pils. Year 10 and 11 pupils have now started on the Early Entry Level Certificate. Opal, Emerald and Sapphire pupils have been getting up close to animal, plant cells, sampling techniques and looking at the structure of food webs. Jade, Am-ber and Diamond have been studying chemistry, making polythene from ethene molecules using molymods.

Miss Hutchinson

Miss Miller

This term we have been working on our badminton skills. Since last year our pupils’ hand eye

co-ordination has seen great improvement, allowing us to work on our tactical play. Primary

have also been extremely resilient in learning this new sport, however, there are now a few un-

usual looking decorations added into the Christmas tree in the hall – see if you can spot them!

We had great success at our first ever swimming gala this term. Our new swim team not only

won all of their individual events, but made it a clean sweep by winning all of the team chal-

lenges also making us the West London champions. We can’t wait for the finals in March at the

Olympic Pool, congratulations boys.

As a department we would like to say a big thank all those who came to support our mini foot-ball tournament against Spring West Academy. A huge well done to our goal scorer Cassius! The boys really showed us what it meant to work as a team, we were all bursting with pride watching them plan their formation and shake hands at the end of each match.

Lower primary class explored printing techniques creating gorgeous vegetable prints dec-orated with vibrant colours in pasta frames.

Secondary Rise artists expressed themselves creating personalised self-portraits.

Caterpillars Class

Monkeys Class

This Half Term Caterpillars have been learning all about different celebrations and stories

around the World. Our favourite ones were Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, Rama and

Sita, Remembrance Day, The Christmas Story and Hanukkah.

Caterpillars discovered Google Earth and love using it to look at the world and the places that

they know, especially home and where they have been on holidays!

Rayan is now eating new food from home. We are very proud, well done Rayan!

Our favourite trips were Cutty Sark and the National Maritime Museum and the Discover Chil-

dren’s Story Centre. We were very interested in the daily life of a sailor and loved taking part in

a sensory storytelling adventure! We enjoy reading storybooks on the minibus and singing all

the songs in the radio.

Monkeys term full of fun and giving!

It has been an amazing half term for Monkeys class!

Boys travelled back in time and experienced life at

Hampton Court Palace. They were especially

amazed by the beautiful garden!

It has been also a very busy half term for Monkeys who turned into Elves and helped Santa make Christmas presents. This year our boys choose to do something special for our community. They made a shopping list of essentials and then donated them people in need at the Riverside Vineyard Food Bank.

Bear Class

Opal Class

Everyone really enjoyed ‘Hounslow Bus Day’ where pupils learnt about travelling

safely and how to deal with challenging situations from various scenarios played

out by actors.

The class are very proud of their progress in maths. This term they have been learning about mode, median, range and mean and singing the maths ‘rhyme’ to remember these really helped!

Bear’s class have been developing their understanding of how Christmas is celebrated all around the world. They have participated in various activities including Christmas Jumper Day, rehearsing and performing at the Christmas Show as well as taking part in fun and educational tasks across the curriculum. We have been learning about the true meaning of Christmas and promoting positive atti-tudes towards each other in our everyday lives.

Emerald Class

Sapphire Class

This term in P.E we have been practicing our badminton skills using the large badminton

racquets and a balloon. When we were confident and able to sustain a rally we moved on to

using the smaller racquets and a shuttle cock.

We also welcomed Daniel in to Sapphire class this half term. He is a very welcome addition to the group and is settling in well.

We have had an amazing second part of the term. So impressed with the progress each and

every pupil has made academically but more so socially. Emerald class pupils are developing

great relationships with each other. I see them calling each other to account and supporting

each other during difficult moments as well. We have an ace swimmer in the class in Dayleigh

who with some of his peers won the Hounslow panathlon. They will now go on to the Olympic

park to compete against other schools nationally. We also have fantastic drivers in Cassius

and Jamie as demonstrated on our go-karting Adventure. Bring on spring and summer term.

Jade Class

Amber Class

We are very proud of each and every single one of our pupils in Jade class. They have achieved great results in both maths and science assessments this half term. The class have also enjoyed two incredibly fun, educational trips. The Crystal gave us valuable insight into sustainability, renewable energy, transport resources and living a greener lifestyle. We also enjoyed a thrilling ride on the Emirates Airline, high above the River Thames! The Tate Modern was our second trip. This vibrant gallery presented us with mes-merising works of art, we were particularly impressed with the swing installation. There is a positive atmosphere and great sense of camaraderie amongst the boys within the class, this is something that is strengthening with each day.

Amber class enjoyed their ice skating trip at the “cool” Somerset House

grounds in London drinking hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Diamond Class

We have been really pleased to see how the boys are remaining resilient with the academic demand of this year’s GCSE content. In English the class have been reading Northern Lights which has sparked off many discussions around the concept of having their own daemon. In CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) the boys have been learning about all aspects of doing the laundry.

IT

We have had another really busy but enjoyable time in ICT this half term. In the primary classes we have started our preparation for Christmas by creating electronic Advent cal-endars. I am also very excited that we have started teaching Computer Science, with Monkeys completing a coding and game design project. We have continued to use a number of websites and resources to support us in our learning.

In Key Stage 3 we have been learning about desk top publishing. We have been creat-ing leaflets about The Rise for future pupils and have concentrated on providing high quality information and lots of original digital photography. Jade have also started learn-ing what algorithms are and have been using specialist software to design algorithms for a range of control devices such as pelican crossings, trains and automated car park bar-riers.

In Key Stage 4 we have continued the Creative iMedia course. Pupils have started to use specialist graphic design software to create an advert for a realistic client.

There has also been a lot of excitement generated by the arrival of the Dash robots. These are for a project we will be doing next term called ‘The Friendship Algorithm’ this will use robots and artificial intelligence to teach social skills and improve communication.

Nataly Figueroa - Behaviour Lead

Positive Behavioural Support

This term we continued to implement Positive Behaviour Support Strategies to help pupils and staff members to create a vibrant learning environment in our school. We are commit-ted to ensuring that our pupils develop functional self-regulation and self-management skills. This term we are very pleased with the increased use of age appropriate social sto-ries to help reduce our pupils’ anxieties. We also continue to facilitate restorative justice and reflection sessions, where our pupils are taught to reflect on their own behaviour and to resolve conflicts. Our pupils have shown a mature approach to restorative practice ses-sions and we are very proud of the mended friendships and the honest conversations that have taken place!

Behaviour titbit of the half term:

Here is our ‘Quick guide to write a social story’:

Use facts and stay away from metaphors or abstract ideas.

Adapt it to meet different pupils’ needs (some pupils prefer having lots of visuals, others, just words)

Include information relevant to the sequence in which the event will take place and include what is

needed in terms of planning and organising

Clearly write behavioural expectations regarding the situation/activity.

Anti-bullying week:

In line with this year’s Anti-Bullying Week focus: ‘All different, All equal!’ we were very proud of the success of our anti-bullying poster competition. All classes took part and created amazing posters. Our school council selected winners and finalists, whose work was then displayed on our Anti-Bullying wall.

Kindness at The Rise

This half term our Kindness Trees have displayed some very special acts of kindness that

have made the community very proud.

Just a few examples:

Kevin – For giving up his golden time to help anther pupil complete their homework.

Danny – For giving up his seat on the tube for a member of the community when going ice

skating.

Emiliano and Tyren – For helping a member of public find their way by giving them correct directions on which underground trains to catch.

This half term we learned 4 new poses: Vrishasana – Tree pose Bhujangasana – Cobra pose Dhanurasana – Bow pose Balaasana – Child/Rock pose

In our class teams we also tried group poses like the Pyramid pose. It helps us develop our communication, co-operation, trust and its lots of fun too!

Knitting club was introduced this half term as part of Staff Wellbeing Friday. It is a very popular club and staff have been spotted wearing handmade scarfs and beanies.

Food Technology

Learning Outside of The Classroom

This half term we have been focusing in our theory

lessons on the ‘Eatwell guide’ and applying that

structure to our recipes.

In KS3 we cooked sausages three different ways:

oven, grill and griddle pan. We tasted different types

and looked at the various ways sausages are made.

To accompany our sausages, we utilised the oven

and hob to make mash and potato wedges.

Moving on from our quick meats, we practiced our

knife skills (cutting and spreading) with sandwiches

and toasties. These tasting sessions were particular-

ly popular.

In KS4 we progressed from a vegetarian kebab to chicken kebabs using a meat probe to check food safety. We continued using the pestle and mortar to conjure up a nut free pesto for our pizza style toast-ed sandwich. We explored flavours such as water-cress, mustard, pickles and basil as well as sampling regional cheeses and freshly made breads.

Whenever possible trips were tied into the schools syllabus. Trips this term have included Hampton Court Palace, the Cutty Sark, Tate Modern and the Science Museum. As well as this we have given some pupils the opportunity to take part in travel training which is agreat life skill for pupils seeking to become independent travellers. We have of course still had, and are planning, some fun, reward-based trips for our children that have included go-karting, Coral Reef, Jump Giants and Snakes and Ladders.

Thoughts for the Week Spring 1

As part of our registration every morning, we focus on our Thought for the Week and what this

means within our daily lives. Pupils are encouraged to discuss these and focus on what the

saying means to them. They have been chosen based on our core values of BE KIND; BE
