Theirs is the GloryIn commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem 17–26 September 1944 RRP: £14.99OUR PRICE £8.00 with FREE UK POSTAGE Call Us Now On Freephone: 0808 178 8212Run Time: 79 minutes mins approx1 Disc |Year: 1946 | Black and WhiteDirector: Brian Desmond HurstCast: Stanley Maxted, Thomas Scullion, Allan Wood, Leo Genn, Geoff van RijsselThis film is a tribute to every man who fought at Arnhem and an everlasting memorial to those who gave their lives. This digitally re-mastered version of the classic World War II film tells the story of the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. The film was produced in 1945 and is unique amongst war films in that it was filmed entirely without the use of studios, sets or actors. Original footage is cleverly interwoven with re-enactments shot on location in Arnhem, featuring the men from the Airbourne Regiment who actually fought in the Battle. After sweeping through France and Belgium in the summer of 1944 the allies were poised to enter Holland. Field Marshall Montgomery favoured a single thrust north over the Rhine to attack the Ruhr with the aim of winning the War by the end of 1944.To achieve their objective the allies launched Operation Market Garden on 17th September 1944, but from the start the plan ran into difficulties. The paratroopers encountered fierce German resistance and suffered heavy casualties before finally being withdrawn nine days later. It was the biggest grossing UK war film for nearly a decade, focussing on the British forces and their fight at Oosterbeek and Arnhem. The director, Brian Desmond Hurst, was himself a veteran of the First World War, having survived Gallipoli where he had served with the Royal Irish Rifles. The producer was Leonard Castleton Knight, Head of Gaumont British News. The script was written primarily by Louis Golding with Terence Young who had been in the Irish Guards with the Guards Armoured Division with XXX Corps seeking to relieve Arnhem during the battle, hence the authenticity of the storyline. The veterans who starred in the film also collaborated on the script. Brian Desmond Hurst said, “The film is my favourite because of the wonderful experience of working with soldiers, and because it is a true documentary reconstruction of the event. I say without modesty it is one of the best war films ever made”.

Made in 1955, this was Carol Reed’s last film for the legendary Alexander Korda and his first in colour. Counter-balancing the whimsical tale of a young boy is the equally childlike romance of Sonia and her body-building boyfriend Sam, who is involved with crooked wrestling promoter Blackie Isaacs (Lou Jacobi).

A very rare example of an Anglo- Jewish film, it was partly shot on location in Petticoat Lane in London’s East End, at the heart of what was still a thriving Jewish community.

Memories of Working at The Rank Organisation Part 1, by Noel CroninI started my film career in 1962 at Rank Advertising Films in Park Royal, Cumberland Avenue; an industrial road with the huge Guinness brewery at the end, which gave out a marvellous smell! My job was that of post boy, for which I had to attend an interview. In those days a parent would accompany you, so my poor old over-worked Mum and I trekked from our home in Swiss Cottage to the wilds of Park Royal – it seemed miles away! Having had the interview, my mother realised we didn’t have the fare home, so we walked. Being a polite but shy young man, working in a full office was quite daunting, but I survived and was offered a job in the film let division, checking the reels of cinema adverts for damage or replacement ads. The film cans were colour co-ordinated; blue was Scotland, yellow was Yorkshire and so on. The cans were checked and returned via a company called FTS which had collection depots like Hans Place in London. Sometimes cans were placed in the corner of the checking room in a growing pile – this sadly was an indication of the start of the end for mass cinemas, as the pile was for closed cinemas.

Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. He will be contributing a series of memories to the newsletter over the coming months. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for The Rank Organisation and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on TPTV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades, and his work includes Home For Christmas (1990), Romantic Undertaking (1996), and The Ghost of Greville Lodge (2000).

Co-stars comedy stalwarts Bernard Miles, Leslie Phillips and Sid James. Presented as a brand-new remaster from the original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Overjoyed to learn that they’ve inherited a cinema in the north of England, Matt and Jean Spenser are subsequently shattered to find it’s less of a grand picture palace and more of a fleapit (with three equally decrepit employees). Can the couple make a go of it or will they be forced to sell up and watch the Bijou Kinema be redeveloped into a car park?

Yearning to escape from this depressing environment is pretty, ambitious Margery Graham; the victim of an enforced marriage, she is tied to a lazy, boorish husband and young daughter. Margery lives next door to her widowed mother who, in order to make ends meet, has taken in a lodger, Harry – a slick, unscrupulous salesman with a roving eye and a more-than- neighbourly interest in Margery. This sixties’ backstreets bedroom drama adapted from Nan Maynard’s novel is an unflinchingly told story set amid the sordid squalor of post-war London’s broken streets. There are a number of interesting characters, most significantly Ian Hendry’s compelling performance as the jack-the-lad charmer capable of turning from seducer to scoundrel and back again. Hendry and June Ritchie together create an interesting chemistry, and the film is potently magnetic when they are on screen together.Other relationships and marriages are portrayed; including extra-marital affairs and alliances, a gritty but fascinating glimpse into the hard lives of people who had no escape from their grey existences, reflected in the barren streets around them.A slice of British realism which is hard to resist, the plot intertwines the lives of a group of working class characters, with sub-plots and storylines which weave and interconnect, with inevitable and dramatic outcomes.

and Paul AnnettStars: Ann Mitchell, Fiona Hendley, Maureen O’Farrell and Eva Mottley with Debby Bishop, David Calder and Maurice O’Connell.A gritty crime series with strong female lead characters – and the career breakthrough which started Lynda La Plante on her path as one of television’s highest profile writers – Widows was a smash hit for ITV and was recently adapted into a major motion picture by acclaimed director Steve McQueen. Both series are presented here as brand-new restorations from the original film materials. Also included is the sequel series made ten years later: SHE’S OUT (1995), starring Ann Mitchell.

When their villain husbands are killed during an attempted robbery, three widows decide to finish what their deceased husbands started. One of the most influential dramas of the 1980s, Widows was acclaimed for its strong female roles created by Lynda La Plante, who went on to write Prime Suspect. La Plante had played small roles in The Sweeney and Out, and, frustrated with the way women were depicted for TV drama, she submitted a pilot script and was encouraged by script editor Linda Agran to complete the serial. In She’s Out, also written by La Plante, Ann Mitchell returns to her award-winning role as Dolly Rawlins, who has served an eight year prison sentence for her husband’s murder, and is now set to retrieve the six million pounds worth of diamonds that she stashed before she was sent down, in order to start a new life. However, her former cell mates have their own ideas...

WIDOWS airs every Wednesday at 9pm on Talking Pictures TV.

Spotlight on Jeremy KempBorn: 3 February 1935 Died: 19 July 2019

The English actor Jeremy Kemp, will forever be remembered as PC Bob Steele – one of the original cast – in the BBC TV series Z-Cars. His performances graced many television, film, stage and radio productions with his presence ensuring success followed him as a character actor, underrated by some critics but adored by his fans.

He was born Edmund Jeremy James Walker, on 3rd January 1935 to Elsa and Edmund Walker in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His father was an engineer from a family of

landed gentry who had owned estates in Yorkshire. He served national service with the Gordon Highlanders and progressed to lieutenant in the Black Watch. In 1955, he attended acting school at the Central School of Speech and Drama, taking his mother’s maiden name for professional stage use. His London stage debut was in The Chairs at the Royal Court Theatre. Three years later, he gained a contract with the BBC’s radio drama company and made his TV debut in 1958 as a police constable in The Frog, a Sunday Night Theatre production based on a play by Ian Hay.

His film career began with an uncredited performance in The Battle of the River Plate (1956) but it was not until Face of a Stranger (1964), a ‘B’ film in the Edgar Wallace series that he would gain a cinematic credit. Other notable film credits throughout his career include: Dr Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), The Blue Max (1966), Darling Lili (1970), The Belstone Fox (1973), A Bridge Too Far (1977), East of Elephant Rock (1978), The Prisoner of Zenda (1979), Top Secret! (1984), When the Whales Came (1989) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). His final film appearance was in Angels and Insects (1995).

He continued acting on stage throughout his career, including two successful seasons of classics for the Old Vic Theatre (1958-60). Although television and film would later fill most of his time, he returned regularly to the stage, notably as Aston in The Caretaker at the Mermaid Theatre in 1972 and as Buckingham in Richard III at the Olivier Theatre in 1979.

It was television that brought Kemp lasting fame and recognition. In 1962 he took the role of PC Bob Steele in Z-Cars – a role turned down by Michael Caine! He was an instant hit, but left midway through the second series, for fear of becoming typecast after 34 episodes. His television appearances continued to be popular, and he was in many shows from the ‘Golden Era’ of TV, including countless Play for Today productions for both the BBC & ITV as well as The Protectors, Colditz, Churchill’s People, Space 1999, Vikings, The Fall Guy, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Winds of War as Brig. Gen. Armin Von Roon; Star Trek: The Next Generation and Murder, She Wrote. He scored another huge success for his reprised role of Von Roon in the mini-series War and Remembrance. His final television role was that of Hissah Zul in 22 episodes of Conan for the 1997-98 season. He returned to Z Cars in 1978 for the last ever episode, simply playing a vagrant. Many from the original cast also returned as a respectful acknowledgement to the show that gave them their break, playing small cameos.

In his private life Kemp enjoyed ornithology and liked to visit the London Wetland Centre in Barnes, south-west London, when he was in the UK. He lived both in Britain and California but his health declined after the death of his American partner, Christopher Harter. Kemp retired from acting in 1998 and died on 19 July 2019 at the age of 84 – a sad loss to the acting world.

LOSTA tense drama telling the story of the kidnap of a child in 1950’s London.

OUR PRICE £12.99RRP: £19.99with FREE UK POSTAGE Call Us Now On Freephone: 0808 178 8212Run Time: 89 mins approx1 Disc|Year: 1956 |ColourDirector: Guy GreenStars: David Farrar, David Knight, Julia Arnall, Anna Turner(AKA Tears for Simon)Lee and Sue Cochrane are a happily married American couple living in London with their 18-month-old son Simon. Their idyllic lifestyle is shattered when one day the family nanny takes Simon out and briefly leaves him in his pram outside a local shop. On her return, the nanny finds that Simon has been abducted. Scotland Yard, led by Inspector Craig (David Farrar) and Sergeant Lyel (Anthony Oliver), are soon on the trail of the kidnappers, their pursuit leading them down a path of danger and intrigue.

The film makes great use of locations throughout London and the South East of England and the insight into life in 1955 is fascinating. The story confronts every parent’s nightmare: what happens when you briefly look away and find your child is missing when you look back? The climax is suitably dramatic.

A talent-packed cast includes many of Britain’s top supporting players, including Thora Hird, Everley Gregg, Joan Sims, Shirley Anne Field, Joan Hickson, Dandy Nichols, Mona Washbourne, Barbara Windsor and George Woodbridge. The script was written by Janet Green, and hints at the scripts she later wrote for the crime thriller/social problem films made by Michael Relph and Basil Dearden.

Spotlight on Patricia DaintonPatricia Dainton was born in Hamilton, Scotland on 12th April 1930, the daughter of the stage and film agent Vivienne Black. She was born a twin, and her brother George later had a brief acting career as George Bryden. Patricia’s school career ended when she moved to London at 10 years old. She studied for the stage initially at Toynbee Hall and then at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and The Cone School of Dance as well as a

spell of time with the Rank Charm School. She wanted to be a dancer and realised that she would need to gain as much experience as possible.

She made her stage debut in Stratford-Upon-Avon and worked hard in pantomimes, reper-tory and productions in the London suburbs, where she began to get noticed in productions of Quiet Wedding, Babette, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Watch on the Rhine. During the war she also worked in productions with ENSA.

Patricia’s film debut came with a “blink and you will miss her” uncredited role in the Ealing film The Bells Go Down (1943) which starred Tommy Trinder. After the war she returned to films with two further uncredited appearances in Dancing with Crime (1947) and Uncle Silas (1947). Her first credited film role was a made for television film called The Boltons Revue (1948), where she was billed as ‘Pat Dainton.’

The Dancing Years (1950) was the break Patricia was waiting for, however, and this lead to bigger and better roles in the such films as Hammer the Toff (1952), Paul Temple Returns (1952), Tread Softly (1952), Operation Diplomat (1952), The Passionate Stranger (1953) and Witness in the Dark (1959) among others.

Patricia was also seen on television in two series. She starred in Sixpenny Corner (1955-56) as Sally Norton. This show was the first ever series to be screened on Independent Television and was about a young couple who ran a garage. Sadly no episodes survive. The second series was the less successful White Hunter (1958) in which Patricia played guest roles in two episodes. She was also seen in the Kraft Mystery Theatre series in two plays, which she would make into films; the aforementioned Witness in the Dark and The Third Alibi – which was filmed in 1961 – after which she would retire from the business and concentrate on raising her family with husband Norman Williams, an actor and later producer. As a producer, he is known for Piccadilly Third Stop (1960), The Shakedown (1960) and It’s All Happening (1963). Norman and Patricia were married in 1952 and had two children.

After The Third Alibi (1961), Patricia raised her family and later worked for WH Smiths in the book department for 21 years, quietly slipping away from the public’s gaze until she was rediscovered three years ago.

Patricia was tracked down by Talking Pictures TV director Sarah Cronin-Stanley during 2016, appear-ing at the Renown Film Festival that year. She also filmed introductions for feature a day of her films on the channel. Patricia has since made one more appearance at the Nettlefold Studios celebration in 2018, much to the delight of her many fans.

It became one of the most popular West End shows during the dark days of the Second World War, and this radiant film adaptation proved no less popular, with Dennis Price’s sensitive portrayal of the lead character winning great acclaim and Novello’s score featuring a string of melodies that swept the world. The Dancing Years is featured in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

In Austria, in 1910, a small band of army officers arrive at an inn on the outskirts of Vienna. It is home to Rudi Kleber, a gifted but impoverished composer, who is asked to play while they eat. Rudi plays his own composition and the officers immediately bid against each other for its purchase – but a woman’s voice outbids them; it is Maria, the lovely and brilliant star of the opera...

Talking Pictures TV with Craig Douglas Craig Douglas was a popular singer in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His chart-topper, Only Sixteen (1959), sold more copies in the UK than Sam Cooke’s original version. Other top twenty hits include: A Teenager in Love (1959), Pretty Blue Eyes (1960), The Heart of a Teenage Girl (1960), A Hundred Pounds of Clay (1961), Time (1961), When My Little Girl is Smiling (1962), Our Favourite Melodies (1962) and Oh Lonesome Me (1962). His early career bridged the gap between the end of the easy listening period, when the focus was on ‘crooners’ and the beginning of teenage pop music; his ability was to combine both styles. Douglas topped the bill on the Beatles’ first major stage show and also appeared in the 1962 film It’s Trad, Dad! with Helen Shapiro. He continued his career on stage until 2010, and appeared at the Amersham Rock’n’Roll Club on 11 December 2010, at an event to celebrate his work. John Leyton, Mike Berry and the Flames all took part, while Jet Harris and other celebrities attended. He recently appeared on stage at a Talking Pictures TV/Renown Pictures film festival in St Albans in 2019. He was interviewed and also sang, the audience joining in with fond enthusiasm.
