Students Travel to Sacramento for 2014 Ag Leadership

Thirteen students who are part of the Ag Leadership Class taught by Dr. Valerie Mellano and Dr. Peggy Perry were in Sacramento December 1 and 2 to meet with leaders. Their tour was facilitated by Dale Stern, Cal Poly Pomona alum who is a partner in an agricultural law firm in Sacramento. The firm provides advocacy and policy assistance to many of the agricultural organizations in California. During the two day visit the students heard about water law, employment and labor issues, recent enactments of significance to agriculture, pesticide drift cases and FSMA environmental regulations and recent developments of importance to agriculture.

They met with Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez and California Secretary of Agriculture Karen Ross. On the second day they toured Capay Valley, hosted by Jim Etters and Full Belly Farm hosted by Jordan Dixon.

ARI Showcase Highlights Ag Research

On November 6th, the Agriculture Research Institute (ARI) held its 14th annual Research Showcase. The format in-cluded a poster session and oral presentations by student and faculty from the four ARI campuses (Chico, Fresno, San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Pomona) along with the two new affiliate campuses (Humboldt and Monterey). Both grad-uate and undergraduate students gave presentations on ARI-funded research on projects being conducted by faculty from each of these campuses. A Q&A period followed each presentation and it was apparent that each student was well-versed in their topic. Agriculture in California is diverse and the research topics reflected this fact. Re-search topics presented ranged from alternative feed for dairy cows, aquaculture, food science and technology, food safety, development of vaccines to protect poultry to ge-netic engineering of plants to resist nematodes. A copy of a booklet containing abstracts of the oral presentations can be obtained by writing to David Still ([email protected]). The event was attended by 150 faculty, students and industry representatives. Dr. Gregory Parham, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Agriculture delivered introductory remarks to open the Research Showcase.

TakeNote

P L E A S E D U M P I T

Congratulations to all of you who are doing your part to get rid of the clutter in offices, classrooms, work areas and ag spaces. There is an old adage that is used by professional organizers, “if you haven’t used it in two years, you probably won’t.” Consider getting rid of old books. Papers that are important can be scanned and saved electronically, and equipment that isn’t functional can find a better home than on a shelf collecting dust. Once we get rid of the clutter, we can begin to envision how to use our spaces more efficiently. For instance, a new office was created when the store room behind the copy room was cleaned out. Who knows what other possibilities exist with a littler creativity and a filling of the garbage bins.

Help those dust mites find new homes…. not in our buildings.

If you don't use it

LOSE IT !
