Information for applicantsDEAN OF LIVERPOOL
Liverpool Cathedral, designed by a novice 22-year old
architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was built ‘by the people of
Liverpool, for the people of Liverpool, to the glory of God.’ In
the words of the poet John Betjeman, Liverpool Cathedral is
‘one of the greatest buildings in the world.’ and it has been
an iconic part of the city’s skyline for over 90 years, and
continues to play a prominent role in the life of the people of
Merseyside and beyond.
Following Pete Wilcox’s appointment as Bishop of Sheffield, we are looking for a new Dean of Liverpool to direct the life and work of the Cathedral and, as a member of the Diocesan Oversight Team, share with the bishop and other senior colleagues in the oversight of the Diocese.
Liverpool Cathedral is ‘a safe place to do risky things in Christ’s service’. Prayer and worship are at the heartbeat of Cathedral life, and we are known for being a place of creativity and innovation. This means you are as likely to find events such as Cream Classics (dance music performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra: ( bit.ly/cream-classics) and performances of The Snowman ( bit.ly/liverpool-snow-man) taking place in our vast and impressive space as you are café-style worship ( bit.ly/cafe-style-worship) and, of course, choral evensong ( bit.ly/choral-evensong).
We are working towards two ambitious goals: to double the number of people who worship with us each week by making new disciples of Jesus Christ, and to raise £24 million to fund both urgent repairs and new projects by the time of our centenary celebrations in July 2024. To support us, our Strategic Plan (opposite) focusses on six mission activities built on four foundations.
Our next Dean will be central to seeing these aspirations come to fruition over the next seven years and beyond.
1 Dean of Liverpool
INTRODUCTION
MISSION STATEMENT
Multiplying Congregations
We proclaim the gospel of Jesus in such a way that new audiences are reached and new missional communities are formed.
Heightening Worship In the ordinary round of daily worship, and in our high-profile services, in traditional choral or more contemporary styles, we settle for nothing less than uplifting excellence.
Widening Enterprise
We continue to grow and develop our own retail and events business,
as an integral part of our mission.
Extending Wellbeing
We work with others to establish the conditions in which individuals and
neighbourhoods thrive.
Promoting Fairness
We seek justice and equity in human society, so that the needy are not forgotten and the hope of the poor is not taken away.
Deepening Discipleship
We enable individual followers of Jesus to grow to maturity in him, so that each can play a full part in the mission of God.

3 Dean of Liverpool
In our new Dean I am seeking a colleague who will
bring wisdom, creativity, flair and theological insight
not only to the Cathedral but also to our purposes as a
Diocese. In Liverpool, we say that we’re asking God for
a bigger church to make a bigger difference, and we
say ‘More people knowing Jesus, more justice in the
world’. Over many years our Cathedral has shared and
modelled these purposes, and our Dean has enriched
and supported them.
Liverpool is a wonderful city – vibrant, upbeat, resilient,
full of humour and courage. The person appointed as
our new Dean will contribute an open, prayerful, clear
Christian perspective to the public life of the city and
the region. Might that person be you? Please be sure
of my prayers as you consider that question.

Information for applicants 4
Following a wide consultation with people connected to the
life of the Cathedral, the appointment panel have identified
several areas of focus for the ministry of the next Dean:
1. Encouraging a vibrant liturgical life which will further enhance the Cathedral as a place of prayer and worship to point people to Jesus Christ
Prayer and worship are at the heartbeat of Cathedral life, and we offer diverse expressions of worship so that we can enable as many people as possible to encounter Christ. We try not to define ourselves by church tradition and provide a balance of traditional and contemporary forms of worship which we hope the next Dean will continue to support.
In addition to the services you would expect to find in a cathedral, we also have Zone 2 – a café church style service which takes place on Sundays at the same time as the Choral Eucharist, and Sepas – an Iranian congregation which has seen particular growth in recent years. Plans are also afoot to develop a new congregation to reach young adults. As a Child Friendly Church, we try to offer opportunities for children to explore faith with their families. The number of children coming to worship with us at the Sunday Choral Eucharist has reduced in recent years, and we are keen to explore how we can best engage with children and young people. As we develop multiple congregations, there is a challenge for us to create authentic opportunities for them to gather together for worship and fellowship.
Our music department is highly regarded, and despite not having a Choir School, we are fortunate to have outstanding boys’ and girls’ choirs. We also have a junior choir aimed at younger children which is an outreach initiative that also helps to prepare and recruit children for the cathedral choirs. A new Director of Music has recently been appointed and will be taking up post at the end of 2017.
We aim to foster a culture of excellence in all that we do – including worship and liturgy – which requires us to experiment, and is grounded in a strong culture of learning, reflection and support.
ABOUT THE ROLE
5 Dean of Liverpool
We hope our next Dean will help us continue to pursue excellence in our liturgical life and encourage us to innovate and experiment.
2. Leading the Cathedral in entrepreneurial, innovative and ambitious mission and evangelism to grow disciples and promote social justice within the city and diocese
The Diocese of Liverpool is asking God for a bigger church to make a bigger difference, and the Cathedral has a key role to play not only in being directly involved in mission, evangelism and social justice, but also supporting and resourcing other churches.
The Cathedral congregations have increased by 60% in the last three years, and we are well on the way to doubling the size of the congregations by 2024.
The Cathedral is home to The Joshua Centre – the focus for the vision of launching new congregations to reach new neighbourhoods and networks which is now about to embark on a ground-breaking project supported by Strategic Development Funding from the Church Commissioners. Volition is a back-to-work scheme for long-term unemployed people offering work experience, one-day vocational courses and training in job search and interview techniques. Several participants complete their work experience in the Cathedral, and at least one ‘graduate’ of the programme has been employed by Chapter. The Hope+ foodbank is a local initiative supported by both cathedrals in Liverpool and a number of other churches. The service goes beyond providing food, and helps people back on their feet through debt and housing advice, and support to refugees and asylum seekers. Our own retail and events business also continues to grow as an integral part of our mission.
We hope that our next Dean will be committed to making a bigger difference in and for Liverpool and open to using the space and resources of the Cathedral creatively to develop new worshipping communities and other ways to reach out to the people of the city.

3. Championing the 24 for 2024 centenary campaign, engaging with potential benefactors from within the city, the region and beyond, and steering the potential HLF bid.
Our 24 for 2024 campaign was launched in July 2014 – the 90th anniversary of the Cathedral’s consecration – and looks forward to our centenary in 2024. The Strategic Plan seeks to ensure that the Cathedral will be fit for purpose for the next one hundred years. Our goal is to raise £24 million by 2024 – partly to meet the costs of urgent maintenance work on the building so that it remains a safe place for all who use it, and partly to increase the facilities (and therefore mission capacity). £18.5 million will be used to finance repairs and establish an endowment for the future and the remaining £5.5 million will go towards specific new initiatives. So far £7 million has been raised and a Director of Fundraising has been appointed to inject energy and professionalism to this challenge.
A significant part of the fundraising effort will be a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the next Dean will play a key role in steering the bid and working with important stakeholders in civic life to gain support for the bid.
We are aware that this is an ambitious fundraising target, and our next Dean will need to build relationships with potential donors and secure support from people who are influencers and decision makers.
4. Developing relationships and networks with people in the civic and cultural life of the City and Region and contributing to the developing social, economic and cultural agenda.
The Cathedral dominates the skyline of Liverpool, and there are people who were involved in building the Cathedral who are still alive and active in the City. This means that the Cathedral continues to be a significant part of the fabric of the city. We are privileged to be a significant cultural venue in the city, but we do not want to be just another concert hall or events venue. We are primarily a place of worship, and we are delighted that the many events which happen in the Cathedral give people a reason to come into a house of prayer.
The development of the Liverpool City Region and election of the first Metro Mayor has given new us new opportunities to engage in civic

life, and we are delighted that our Canon Chancellor acts as Mayoral Adviser for the voluntary and community sector.
Whilst many of the city’s civic events take place at Liverpool Parish Church, the Dean is a significant figure in the city (alongside the Bishop, the Rector of Liverpool, and – as a city with two cathedrals – the Dean of the Metropolitan Cathedral), and has many opportunities to build connections with people from all walks of life. Ecumenical relationships are strong, and we value the partnerships we have with other Christian denominations.
We would like our next Dean to be someone who will enthusiastically take up opportunities to develop stronger relationships with civic and community leaders so that we can better serve the people and communities in Liverpool, the city region and wider Merseyside.
5. Having oversight of the Cathedral finances, and working with Chapter and staff to ensure that resources are managed efficiently and the plans for a break-even budget are achieved
We have made significant improvements in our finances in recent years. During the last decade, we have reduced the budget deficit from £300,000 each year to £67,000 in 2016, and we have plans in place to reach break-even by 2019. More information is in our latest annual report and accounts.
We realise we cannot be complacent, and the Dean will need to ensure that Chapter and the Cathedral staff maintain a focus on the financial health of the Cathedral, and, with Chapter, hold accountability for ensuring the budgets are met.
6. Build on the strong relationships between the Cathedral and Diocese to enable the Cathedral to be a resource for parishes, and develop greater links with the diocese beyond the City of Liverpool
The Cathedral and Diocese work extremely closely together. The Diocesan Secretary is also our Chief Officer, and we share several ‘back office’ functions which give both cathedral and diocese financial and relational benefits.
9 Dean of Liverpool
We aspire to be a ‘resource church’ for the diocese, and are eager to support clergy and parishes in their mission and ministry. Each curate in the diocese has the opportunity to spend a day in the Cathedral as part of their training, giving them the chance to meet with visitors and preside at one of our daily eucharists. We also share resources, for example enabling parishes to set up their own Zone 2 style services. St Mellitus North West is based at the Cathedral and this gives us the opportunity to support theological education across our region. The Dean’s contributions to the life of the diocese through the Diocesan Oversight Team, Diocesan Synod and Bishop’s Council are extremely valuable.
Over half of the population of the diocese live outside the City of Liverpool. There is a difference in social and political opinion between the City and other towns in the diocese (e.g. 64% of Wigan voted leave in the EU referendum compared to Liverpool City voting 58% remain) and we would welcome the next Dean helping us to do more to engage with those parishes which are a greater distance from the Cathedral.
Information for applicants 10
First and foremost, our Dean needs to be a person of prayer.
We understand that leading a Cathedral community is a
significant challenge, and know that ‘you cannot bear the
weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by the
grace and power of God’. There is a national structured
induction programme to help newly appointed Deans, and
Bishop Paul has offered to fund transition coaching to provide
further support.
To be appointed as a Dean, you need to have been ordained for at least six years. Whilst previous Cathedral experience would be helpful, it is not an essential requirement for this role. We recognise that we all have different strengths, and the person specification on page 18 sets out the range of qualities we expect that the person we appoint will bring in order to flourish as Dean of Liverpool.
