Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) will open between 35 and 45 Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores nationwide this year, down significantly from the company’s openings the prior two years. Additionally, the company plans to open 10 stores annually throughout Canada as part of a plan to eventually operate 100 stores in the country. The company has also chosen to expand in major metropolitan areas and new rural markets rather than infill areas where it already has a presence. The company recently closed a store in Milwaukee, WI; the first store closed by the company since the early 1990s.

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) will open as many as 300 Walgreens stores this year and 175 stores during 2011, with both years’ counts down from the 475 stores the company opened during 2009. The company will also revamp the layout of its drug stores, reducing inventory by as many as 4,000 SKUs and altering shelving plans to streamline supply operations and improve product availability for customers. During 2009, the company opened stores in AK to expand its reach to all 50 states and also opened its 7,000th store.

Stage Stores, Inc. (713-667-5601) plans to open 27 department stores this year, similar to the number of stores the company opened during 2009. The company currently operates 759 stores, trading as Bealls, Goody’s, Palais Royal, Peebles and Stage, throughout 39 states nationwide.

Nothing But Noodles (480-513-7008) will open a 3,918 sq.ft. restaurant at Cahaba Village, a retail center located along U.S. Highway 280 in Birmingham, AL, later this year. Canterbury Nails & Spa is also slated to open a 1,886 sq.ft. salon at the center later this month. The tenants will join Newk’s, FedEx Office, Alfred Angelo and Yogurt Mountain. The opening will be Nothing But Noodles’ first restaurant in Birmingham, and the company currently operates two locations in Huntsville, AL.

Aeropostale, Inc. (646-485-5398) will open 25 Aeropostale stores during its 2010 fiscal year along with between 25 and 30 P.S. from Aeropostale stores. The company also plans to remodel as many as 40 existing stores. The company currently operates 923 stores nationwide, throughout 49 states, and Canada.

Energy Kitchen, Inc. (888-662-2177) plans to open an Energy Kitchen restaurant in the Upper West Side area of Manhattan, NY as part of a plan to operate 50 health-oriented fast food restaurants throughout CT, NJ and NY in three years’ time. The company recently opened two Manhattan locations: a 1,800 sq.ft. restaurant along West 23rd Street, between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue in the Flatiron area and a 1,700 sq.ft. location along 2nd Avenue between 84th Street and 85th Street in the Upper East Side. The company currently operates nine restaurants, featuring a menu with no food item containing more than 500 calories, throughout Manhattan.

Casey’s General Stores, Inc. (515-965-6100) plans to open a total of 20 convenience stores and relocate 20 existing stores during its 2010 fiscal year. Additionally, the company plans to continue acquiring smaller convenience store chains in areas within and bordering its existing markets, having recently acquired a four-store chain in IA and a nine-store chain in MO.
