Depression: Don't Take It To Work By Anneliese Garrison, RN BSN

What is Life? © written 10/22/2000

Alone in a crowdquiet in the mist of commotionI watch life pass by....

What is Life?As the people pass hurriedly byNo one stops to talkAs if they were shy--

I catch a glimpse of someone staringHe turns away as if I was daring....

What is Life?Out the window I gazeFrom my desk, I watch lifeBut what do I seethrough life's hurriedly haze?

I see a couple hugShowing obvious signs of love....

A child cries for a motherA hug a kiss and then another....

In a dark alley cornera tear is wiped away.

A homeless shelter...a blanket for warmthfood for their hunger.

This is life....As the people pass hurriedly by.....

Famous People With Depression

Abraham Lincoln (slept a lot)Lady Gaga (struggles everyday)Ashley Judd (considered suicide)Heath Ledger (committed suicide)David Arquette ( drank and displayed erratic behavior) after hissplit from wife.Catherine Zeta Jones ( recently revealed she is bipolar )To name a few. … We are not alone.

In the darknessof the sun,

In the shadowof the moon,

In the criesof my laughter--

Stands loneliness.

Which Iso

bitter-sweetlyembrace.

These are three of the many poems Ihave written over the years. I toosuffer from depression and when itgets a hold of me, sometimes I can bedown for an entire week!

I recently went to the Guidance Centerand asked the doctor if I could havehelp “getting over this hump”? He said,“No” I asked, “Why?” His reply wasthree-fold. He continued: “Numberone: you can't afford to pay your bill. And number two,” He continued,“What can we really tell you that youdon't already know? – Go to churchthat seems to work for you” – As heprescribed some antidepressants.

I was struggling and was trying toreach out for help. I was in deepdespair for about a week. I just lay inmy bed, didn't work, eat, sleep or evengo to church. My depression mademe feel lost and alone. Just like Job inChapter 30 verse 19 I felt like I hadbeen “thrown in the mud.”

A week went by and an elderlygentleman from the church called meand asked what was the matter. Italked for a while and then his advicewas priceless: “Snap out of it andbring some chocolate cake!” Well I didjust that! I made chocolate cupcakeswith yellow smiley faces and sprinkleson each. A support person or group isvery important when you are feelingdepressed. As I shared the cupcakesthat Sunday I remembered the Bibleverse that God gave me: “Greater isHe that is in me, than he that is inthe world.” 1 John 4:4 God can helpwith your depression 100% When youget depressed don't isolate yourselffrom others. They will remind youGod's got your back and cheer up!

Count Your Blessings

By Anneliese Garrison, RN BSN

I realize that thanksgiving may be a tough emotional time for you as it is for me, but God is with you. He is in your heart. We all have so many things to be thankful for despite our trials, tribulations and depression.

On Thanksgiving Day, look up these Bible verses again and look for the message that the Lord is speaking to you through this activity.

Count your blessings. List 10 things you are thankful for.

A merry heart does good, like a medicine but a broken spirit dries the bones. Proverbs 17:22

The Joy of Pets Inspired by: Layna Garrison, SD

We had quite an adventure this week. I hadto go out in the rain to get printer ink for this edition of Healthy Worship and had three blessings that I can partially attributeto Layna. I almost walked out of the store with free printer ink. The clerk asked me for my ID which I had left in the car. But the clerk in the Customer Service Department, was so engrossed in my service dog Layna, that she took no notice to the fact that I almost walked out with $56.00 worth of printer ink!

Well, I brought this to her attention. She accepted it and thanked me.Layna helped me trek back out into the rain. People are so busy and in

such a hurry, that they don't slow down oreven show kindness by stopping. This is where Layna helps me so much. Traffic always stops to look at her and wave me on. Thank you! A smile and a wave and a blessing – noted.

When we got back to the counter, the printer ink exchange went flawless despite me not having my original receipt and I even got an extra $6.00 refund and wished everyone in line a “God bless and Happy Thanksgiving”. With Thankfulness, blessing number two -- was in the books.

At our next stop, I went to the grocery store to pick up a ham and all the trimmings for my church's Friend's and Family's Thanks Giving Dinner. We were walking through the grocerystore spreading joy every where we

stopped. I was feeling so happy and was so thankful, that at this moment, my depression was not getting the better of me like it had the beginning of the month. Glory be to God and a big thanks to Layna!

At the check out, Dog food is always first then groceries. I gave cashier the ham to ring up and to my amazement they were having a special and the ham was free! Blessing number three was in the books!

Thanks God – Come-on Layna let's go home. Your the best dog ever! She ate her dinner and fell asleep beside me.

1. List 10 things you can be thankful for in your life:

Those of us that suffer from depression know how hard this can be. Make a list and put it where you can see it everyday. Then, when your depression hits, focus on this list.

2. Make an hourly-weekly schedule:

Put just the days of the week and the time hour by hour. When depression hits, it is debilitating. Sometimes, to the point whereyou can't get out of bed. Pray to God and fight it. Do the things on your schedule. Push through and remember, “This too shall pass”.

3. Make a list of things you like to do and make time to do them:

This can be several things you like to do. It can be a craft of some kind. It can be doing something for your own self benefit such as exercising, going to the spa, reading, spending time with loved ones.Anything you get pleasure from. Put this on your hourly-weekly schedule and you will find yourself feeling happy again.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 350 million people suffer worldwide from depression . It is the leading cause of disability. ---- January 28, 2015

4. Don't read or watch negativity:

When you know you are fighting the demon of depression, don't watch the news, or horror movies or hang around with negative, dramatic people. At this time it is extremely helpful to do morning devotions, spending time with God or inspirational meditation. Spend time with people who can inspire you and make you laugh.

5. Don't eat and drink out of emotion:

We learned this from the time we were infants. We cried and got a bottle. We criedand got propped up in our high-chairs with cheerios or cheese or some other delicious finger food. Don't do this. I know – that sugar tastes oh so good with our lack of enthusiasm for life but everything in moderation. Hard to do when you are depressed.

This is how addiction starts. Nobody ever says, “I want to weigh 400 lbs”!We are simply just trying to dull a pain andthen, our eating becomes a habit that turns into an addiction.

The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.

Exodus 14:14

6. Stay away from alcohol and mind altering drugs:

When we are depressed, we tend to self medicate. Stay in control of your mind so you can think straight enough to pull yourself out of this “bump in the road”. You can't drive straight – if you can't think straight both literally and figuratively.

Many opiods and illegal drugs and even alcohol, although legal, are depressants. It may make you numb so you don't have to feel the pain of your depression, but in actuality, these things are making your depression worse.

7. SNAP OUT OF IT AND BRING SOME CHOCOLATE CAKE!

Depression wants to make you stay away from everyone. It is great therapy at this time to hang with positive people that won't be getting into trouble. You are fighting your own battle right now. You don't need any more trauma or drama.

Many Thanks To Donald Smith:Brought these to church and the people I shared them with helped me smile again.

Thanksgiving Brussels Sprouts With Prosciutto and Walnuts

By Lynn Emenheiser

Prosciutto can be quite salty and well, expensive but 2 oz isn't much and can be found at most grocery store delicatessens today. A good substitute would be a flavorful bacon fried up crisp. My guess is the sodium count in this dish isn't astronomical.

This recipe is: Low in Cholesterol Low in FatPrep Time 5 Min

Cook Time 10 Min

Total Time 25 Min

Yield Makes 6 servings (serving size: 1/2 cup)

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup chopped walnuts • 1 1/2 pounds trimmed Brussels sprouts • 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed orange juice • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon grated orange zest • 2 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, excess fat trimmed and removed

How to Make It

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°. Toast walnuts on baking sheet for 8–10 minutes, stirring halfway through. Remove and cool to room temperature. Increase oven temperature to 425°.

Step 2

Slice large sprouts in half, if needed, so all are about the same size. Toss sprouts in large bowl with remaining ingredients. Spread on rimmed baking sheet in even layer.

Step 3

Roast for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway through, or until browned and tender. Toss with toasted walnuts, and serve warm. Source: Health.com/health/recipe

A high blood cholesterol level increases your risk of coronary artery disease. Lowercholesterol is usually better, but in rare cases having a very low level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol or a very low total cholesterol level has been associated with some health problems.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterolis also called "good" cholesterol. HDL protects against heart disease by taking the bad cholesterol out of your blood and keeping it from building up in your arteries. Your HDL cholesterol number is: ... Good (and able to help lower your risk of heart disease) if it is 60 or more.

LDL cholesterol levels should be less than 100 mg/dL. Levels of 100 to 129 mg/dL are acceptable for people with no health issues but may be of more concern for those with heart disease or heart disease risk factors. A reading of 130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline high and 160 to 189 mg/dL is high.

Foods That Can Lift Your Spirits

By Anneliese Garrison, RN BSN

When we are “feeling down” we tend to crave sweet, salty, and fatty foods. This why I must go to my favorite beverage, soda. But I not alone. But, saysDr. Talbot, “If we eat better foods like lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruitsand vegetables, and fish, we short-circuit the junk food cravings and havehigher energy levels and sharper mental focus.” This is not a complete list, Icould write so much more but you can always visit the forum or email me.Balance your mood and prevent depression by also eating the following foods: B12 and folate prevent mood disorders and dementia.. So what are these “good-mood” foods and what about turkey or ham?

What makes us feel depressed is the brain inability to produce enough serotonin. Keep this in mind and enjoy the rest of the article.

Turkey: Turkey is not that high in tryptophan, and it doesn't increase the production of serotonin or melatonin any more than pretty much every other meal you eat. You may feel happy and sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner, but it's not the turkey. It's the fact you ate so much and talked so much and your body had to digest and work more than it normallydoes on any other given day. Source: PsychologyToday.com

Ham:The Joy-Killing Truth: Conventional hams come from factory farms where pigs are pumped full of antibiotics. These hams are also injected with sugar, salt, fillers, and nitrate preservatives that can trigger low moods, migraines, and even swollen ankles, and "cankles" can make anyone seriously depressed! Source:rodaleWellness.com

"Smart" Carbs Can Have a Calming Effect

Carbohydrates are linked to the mood-boosting brain chemical, serotonin. Expertsaren't sure, but carb cravings sometimes may be related to low serotonin activity.

Choose your carbs wisely. Limit sugary foods and opt for smart or “complex” carbs (such as whole grains) rather than simple carbs (such as cakes and cookies).Fruits, vegetables, and legumes also have healthy carbs and fiber.

Protein-Rich Foods Boost Alertness

Foods like turkey, tuna, and chicken have an amino acid called tryptophan, whichmay help you make serotonin. But as mentioned, not enough put you in a better mood or make you sleepy. Try to eat something with protein several times a day,

especially when you need to clear your mind and boost your energy. This is why I mention number six on page four, Seven Activities To Turn Your Frown Upside Down. Good sources of healthy proteins include beans and peas, lean beef,low-fat cheese, fish, milk, poultry, soy products, and yogurt.

Your Body Needs Oxygen: Vitamin B12

Legumes, nuts, many fruits, and dark green vegetables have folate. Vitamin B12 can be found in all lean and low-fat animal products, such as fish and low-fat dairy products.

Get Enough Vitamin D

Normal levels for Vit D are 35 to 40 ng/ml and I had 5ng/dl. Five! Yep, I said five. A 2010 national study found that the likelihood of having depression is higher in people with low levels of Vitamin D. There isn't much vitamin D to be found naturally so I have taken to supplements, fish, egg yokes, fortified milk and orange juice and of course sunlight isa good source as well

Researchers don't know how much vitamin D is ideal, although too much can cause problems with calcium levels and how well your kidneys work. Source: webMD.com
