Over 350 entrants and supporters packed the Don Rowlands Centre at Karapiro for a ‘winter wonderland, Narnia-style’ themed dinner and dance where awards were announced. The judges of the Excellence in Business Award said about Capelli Hair Studio: “Clearly a business with a sense of direc- tion and vision. There appears to be a desire for the business to be at the forefront of the industry with a sustained focus on inno- vation to find ways to remain distinctive.” The sell-out event was run by the two Chambers of Commerce operating in the Waipa District (Te Awamutu and Cam- bridge), with major sponsor Waipa Net- works. A total of nine excellence award categories (including new categories Sustainability and Not for Profit Business) drew a large number of entries for this year’s competition. Yet again, text and email voting was incredibly popular with thousands of votes received for the publicly nominated Cus- tomer Choice category in both towns (Empire Espresso Bar, Te Awamutu and Red Cherry Cafe, Cambridge). YOUR LETTERS

Time to look after our penniesThere is an old saying ‘look after the

pennies and the pounds will look afterthemselves’. Of course now it’s dollarsand cents.

You can go down town with money inyour pocket, $50 or whatever thinking toyourself that’s plenty for what I needtoday, but where does it go?

Spend a little here, a little there andbefore you know it the only thing in yourpocket is your hand. Money is so easy to

spend, debt is so easy to accumulate and itis real nice to have or want things — a bigvelodrome, a new swimming complex, anew museum with an entertainmentcentre as well.

Just spend a few million and increasepublic debt and they are all yours.

Waipa has around 45,000 people, (onethird of the population of Hamilton) whoare lucky to live in one of the mostbeautiful, natural places on this planet.

Clean air, green fields, native bush, rivers, lakes, mountains, walkways andcycleways.

These things make us such a uniqueand desirable place to visit or live.

All we have to do is appreciate what wehave, control spending, keep rateincreases to an acceptable level andpeople will want to come and be part ofWaipa ‘the home of the lucky’.

VERN WILSON

How the mountain lost its mojoTo my children’s children’s

children.Once upon a time there was

a sad mountain namedMaungatautari.

The reason Maungatautariwas said was because he hadbeen invaded by evil pests, andthey had eaten up nearly all ofhis lovely bird, insect andanimal friends, who loved onhis his bush clad slopes.

On day a clever elf had the

wonderful idea of putting up aspecial pest proof fencearound maungatautari, andthe getting rid of all the nastypossums, rats, mice, stoats andferal cats from bushy slopes.

All the lovely native birds, insects and animals wouldthen be able to return toMaungatautari and live theresafely.

Very soon the elf and lots ofhis friends built a marvellous

fence, and got rid of all the evilpests.

The birds, insects andanimals returned and thrived.

People came from far andwide to see the marvellousfence and the beautiful birds, insects and animals in thepeaceful Maungatautari ref-uge.

The elves looked after thefence and watched out for anypests who tried to sneak

through it.Unfortunately, one day the

elves began to squabbleamongst themselves. Whilethey were arguing and squab-bling, the sneaky possums, rats, mice, stoats and feralcats. who were locked outsideMaungatautari, found littlechinks in the fence and theystarted to climb and dig andchew their way through it ...

MARY-ANN LAIDLAW

Who helps the struggling ratepayers? In his letter Rob Waddell

makes a weak attempt toexplain why every ratepayerhas to pay for the velodrome.

It would be safe bet thatless than 10%, but nearer 5%of the region’s ratepayersonly will use it.

The regional council hasno right to grant a smallgroup of people $6 Million.

Instead, it should be a loanon which interest is paid. MrWaddell and his matesshould underwrite the loan.

There has been so manyfigures quoted, how can we

be sure the Home of CyclingTrust won’t come back to theratepayers for more funds.

The trust claims theyhave $13.7 Million butremember Waipa’s $1 Millionhas four caveats on it, soreally they can only have$12.7 Million.

If by some chance they get$6 Million from the regionalcouncil, that would be $18.7Million. Where is the last $10Million to make up the $28.5Million.

The regional councillorswho voted to spend $61,500 to

consult the public andanother $50,000 for an inde-pendent consultant’s report, plus $38,000 on Deloitte’s duediligence report are pouring$149,500 down the drain.

The councillors who votedfor this foolish move shouldbe voted out at the nextelection — they are as pig-headed as the cycling projectproponents.

When a project is relianton 100% finance in grantsand donations, it is alwaysdoomed to fail.

MALCOLM HUME

Can claim besubstantiated?

A Letter to the Editor fromM.E. Wilson appeared in the Cour-ier recently.

M.E. Wilson claimed that theSouthland velodrome in Invercar-gill was a great success.

Can these statements besubstantiated, financially orotherwise. Or are they statementsgathered from previous pressreleases.

It is very important to getcorrect information.

Crew-cut at factoryWorkmates join forces for good cause

BY CATHY ASPLIN

TC120711CA01/02

WORKMATES (from left): Raewyn Morrow, Debbie Bird, Carol Hooker, Carmen Rush (above) nervouslyget ready for their hair to be shaved and (below) compare the results afterwards.

The middle of winter is prob-ably not the best time to shaveyour hair off - but that’s exactlywhat four local women have done.

Pop ‘n’ Good employees DebbieBird, Raewyn Morrow, CarolHooker and Carmen Rush decidedto have their heads shaved toraise funds for the breast cancerfoundation.

‘‘We have in some way all beenaffected by Breast Cancer throughfriends and family and want tocontribute towards raising fundsfor the cause.

After setting their target at$3000 the women left pink bucketsat various locations around town, staged sausage sizzles and gainedpersonal sponsorship.

In front of gathered friends, family and workmates they

completed their end of the bargainby having their heads shaved atthe Davies Foods’ Pop ‘n’ GoodFactory on July 1.

Debbie Bird says it wasinitially a bit of a shock to havethe razor through her hair, buthaving it all removed has resultedin a few bonuses.

‘‘I’m actually enjoying havingno hair and I won’t have to colourit again.’’

Raewyn Morrow says theyhave all received nice feedback.

‘‘People do a double take tostart with when they see no hair, but they are impressed when theyknow why, especially those whohave lost someone to breast can-cer.’’

Carol Hooker says people havetold them how brave they are.

‘‘Many of them have said ‘Icouldn’t so that’. Others says we

have shown courage and thatwe’re awesome.’’

The four workmates thankDavies Foods Operations Mana-ger Martin Kwan and other staffmembers for ongoing support.

They are also extremely grate-ful to everyone who has helpedthem successfully reach their tar-get.

‘‘We have raised just over$3000 which was our initial aim,so we’re really pleased aboutthat.’’

Further donations are alwayswelcome in person at the factoryor via the website (www.nzbcf-fundraising.org.nz).

When asked if they would do itagain, they were all quite ada-mant.

‘‘It’s a once in a lifetime thingreally - we can tick it off our listnow - been there done that.’’

WILL GRAYLING competing in the fencing component of the agrisports section of the YoungFarmer Contest in Masterton, with his fan club in the background and their ‘Where there’s a Willthere’s a way’ banner.

Will Grayling, winner ofThe National Bank YoungFarmer Contest, may havebeen representing AorangiRegion but he grew up in thisarea.

Will (25) is the son of Jimand Mary Grayling of O’ReganRoad, Ngahinapouri.

‘‘He lives in the SouthIsland at the moment, but isvery much a local boy. Heattended Ngahinapouri Prim-ary School and St Paul’s Col-legiate,’’ says mum, Mary.

She and her husband wereat Masterton to see their sontriumph in the contest andMrs Grayling says they couldnot be more proud of him.

He took out The UltimateRural Challenge after threedays of intense competition, collecting a prize package witha value of $85,000.

It all started on Thursdaywith the Technical Day atBrancepeth Station followedby the Practical Day at theSolway A and P Showgroundsand Saturday night’s Tele-vised Grand Final EveningShow on July 2.

Along with the excitementof winning, Will said he wasfeeling very relieved aftersuch a gruelling week.

“It’s been a pretty challeng-ing week, there were sometough times but I stuck inthere. A lot of hard work hasgone into this and it’s great toget this result.”

Will’s fiance KimberleyTrue summed up the contestas ‘the true test of a man’ andcongratulated all sevencontestants for their hardwork throughout the week.

Nearly 800 people attendedthe Televised Grand FinalEvening Show at the Wai-rarapa College Auditorium, which was broadcast live onTVNZ 7 with delayed coverage

It didn’t look like it wasgoing to be Will’s night earlieron and even he was worriedthat the title could be out of hisgrasp after he made somemistakes in the early questionbuzzer rounds.

“I thought it was slippingaway several times — I got offto a rough start.”

In the end though, his all-round performance secured

him the win; he took out theAGMARDT Agri-businessChallenge after delivering apresentation on the supply ofcolostrum earlier in the week.He received an AGMARDTScholarship towards a careerdevelopment programmevalued at $15,000.

MASTERCHEF Nadia Lim who will be cooking up a storm withHarold in Te Awamutu on August 20.

It might be a stretch toimagine Life Education Trust’smascot, Harold the Giraffe, whip-ping up delicious gourmet farewith TV’s 2011 Masterchef win-ner Nadia Lim — but that’swhat’s on the menu in Te Awa-mutu College Hall on August 20.

‘Harold’s Winter Feast’ is afundraiser for Waipa KingCountry Life Education Trust, which provides a mobile class-room to over 60 schools through-out the Waipa King Country area.

Educator Nicky Wise andmascot Harold teach kids how to‘walk tall’, understand how theirbodies work and how to value andtake care of themselves.

Tickets for the event include athree course meal of entree, mainand dessert.

Chef, Nadia Lim will demon-strate the choice of two startersand desserts during the evening(under Harold’s watchful eye).

There’ll also be a ‘silent’auction and a live auction ofprizes on the night. Prizes gath-ered so far include a Lake Tara-wera fishing trip and lunch for 10lucky people with Sir Henry vander Heyden; coaching and around of golf with Gina Scott;beach house weekends atWhangamata and MountMaunganui; cookware fromStevens; and a range of excitinggift vouchers from other support-ing businesses.

Organisers at Waipa KingCountry Life Education Trust arelooking forward to ‘Harold’s Win-ter Feast’ providing an entertain-ing evening full of fun.

As always, the trust is keen toacknowledge its supporters whohelp raise the over $100,000needed to keep the mobile class-room on the road each year.

Trust chair Amanda von Biel, says that’s because Life Educa-tion gets no funding from theGovernment.

“Money raised from the busi-ness and wider community — andfundraising events like ‘Harold’sWinter Feast’ — are what keepsus going and allows the trust’swork to continue in our commun-

ity.”Tickets are available now —

numbers are strictly limited so bein quick!

The night gets underway at TeAwamutu College Hall from 6pmon Saturday, August 20. ContactMandy Rasmussen for tickets on872 0236 or 0274 930928, or [email protected]

Grylls quite at home in Cup winSatherley dedicates her victory to grandmother

HURRICANE MICKEY (Craig Grylls) gets home by three quarters of a lengthfrom Ourforeignminister (Mark Sweeney) in the Te Awamutu Cup.

TC120711CT08

MUD splattered Te Awamutu Cup winning jockeyCraig Grylls returns to scale.

BY PHILLIP QUAY

Former and current Te Awamutujockeys enjoyed plenty of the limelight atSaturday’s Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cupmeeting.

Former Te Awamutu jockey CraigGrylls won the feature event, the $17,500Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cup (1580m,)aboard Murray and Bjorn Baker-trainedHurricane Mickey who started favourite.

Grylls, nowadays based at Matamata, had not previously won the Cup — so hewas delighted to add the race to his recordof major victories.

‘‘I still regard Te Awamutu as my hometrack, so it was great to win the Cup.

‘‘He (Hurricane Mickey) loves the wettracks and he was right in his elementtoday.

‘‘He was travelling well throughout therace and had them covered in the final 200metres.’’

Hurricane Mickey has won 10 racesfrom only 31 starts and most of his successhas come on heavy tracks.

Te Awamutu jockey Lynsey Satherley

dedicated her win aboard D’Llaro in theRosetown Holden 2000 to her grand-mother, Angela Thomas, who died earlylast week.

‘‘It’s been a tough week and this is avery emotional win for me,’’ saidSatherley.

‘‘She was my biggest fan and keptscrapbooks with stories from the paper onmy wins and about a lot of things in racing.

‘‘My daughter is named after her(Sophie Angela).’’

Satherley was pleased with the outcomeof Saturday’s race after she selectedD’Llaro ahead of a number of other horsesengaged in the race.

‘‘I had a choice of six rides in this raceand fortunately I picked the right one.’’

It was Satherley’s first win sincebreaking her hand in a fall at the Rotoruameeting on April 15.

‘‘It’s great to get a win on the boardagain,’’ she said.

D’Llaro, who is trained at Cambridge byGraeme Lord, excelled on the heavy trackconditions.

‘‘He has really clicked now what the

racing game is all about and I expected himto be hard to beat today,’’ said Lord.

‘‘Lynsey has done quite a lot of ridingfor me and I am delighted to see her get thiswin, especially with what she has beenthrough this week.’’

D’Llaro scored by half-a-length fromTom’s Myth, one of the mounts thatSatherley was also offered.

Satherley’s manager, Simon Holmes, was pleased to see Satherley back in thewinners’ circle.

‘‘She does a lot of hard work anddeserves all the success she gets,’’ saidHolmes.

The other Te Awamutu-based jockey toenjoy success at the meeting was MarkSweeney who has been in outstandingriding form in recent months.

Sweeney was successful aboard theRogerson-trained mare, La Bella Signora, who is headed for the broodmare paddockthis spring.

Sweeney also finished runner-up in theTe Awamutu Cup aboardOurforeignminister, trained by Richardand Chris Otto.

Classic win for Darvill trained I’m IsaacBY PHILLIP QUAY

I’m Isaac’s ninth career winin the John F Grylls MemorialClassic at Te Awamutu on Sat-urday had more meaning thanany of his previous victories forTauranga trainer Peter Darvill.

It was the first time Darvillhad not only celebrated a win asthe eight-year-old’s part-owner,but also this time was recog-nised as his trainer.

Previously, I’m Isaac wasprepared for his race victoriesby Tauranga trainers BruceMcKeagg and Jim Pender.

‘‘Today I’m his trainer, breeder, part-owner andstrapper and it’s a great feel-ing,’’ says Darvill, who racesthe Istidaad gelding in partner-ship with his wife, Nola.

‘‘I thought he could turn hisform around because he hasbeen working well and wasvery fit.

‘‘I was a bit worried though, that the track might have beentoo heavy for him.’’

Darvill says I’m Isaac hasbeen a special horse for them, having won a few Cup racesincluding the Te Aroha Cup

and Wairoa Cup.‘‘The race means a lot to us,

too, because it is named afterJohnny Grylls who rode thishorse’s grand-mother, PherozFaith.’’

I’m Isaac will head next tothe $80,000 Taumarunui GoldCup (2100m) at Te Rapa on July30.

‘‘He had to go a good racetoday to clinch a start in theTaumarunui Cup and he’s donethat.’’

Darvill’s riding instructionsto apprentice, Maija Vance, were followed to a tee.

‘‘I told Maija to stay awayfrom the rails and that’s exactlywhat she did,’ ’ saysDarvill.Vance, who rode her50th winner mid-week at TeRapa, has been enjoyingimproved fortunes since shemoved from Ardmore to Cam-bridge a month ago.

‘‘I plan to make Cambridgemy permanent home now,’’ shesays.

‘‘I have been getting morerides and my weight is undercontrol. I can now ride at 53kgwhereas before I was strugglingto get below 56kg.’’

Waikato rugby coach gives TA thumbs upGibbes: Game was great from both crowd and rugby standpoints

TC120711CT02

WAIKATO No. 8 Alex Bradley tackles Taranaki wingerJackson Ormond ball and all.

BY COLIN THORSEN

TC120711CT01

WELCOME back Marty Holah ... the Waikato flanker takes the attack to Taranaki, supported by team-mates, from left, TobyLynn, Malcolm Barnes, Alex Bradley, Chris Middleton and Nathan White.

Take a bow Te Awamutu after turningAlbert Park into a sea of Red, Yellow andBlack in support of Waikato’s ITM Cuprugby team.

A chocker grandstand and field sur-rounded by parochial Mooloo fans helpedWaikato to a convincing 31-13 win over aTaranaki side including All Blacks AndrewHore, Jason Easton and New Zealand

Under-20 World Cup winning team memberBeauden Barrett at first five.

In doing so, Waikato regained the RyanWheeler Memorial Trophy, exclusively atstake whenever these two proud rugbyunions meet.

Waikato coach, Chris Gibbes says he andhis assistants (Scott McLeod and GregSmith) are ‘incredibly proud’ to be able tobring the trophy back to where it belongs.

‘‘We are very pleased with the effort put

in by the team at Te Awamutu.’’Taranaki captain Craig Clarke handed

the trophy over to his Chiefs’ team-mate,Waikato captain Nathan White at the after-match function in Te Awamutu Sports Club.John Wheeler, Ryan’s father, was in attend-ance.

Gibbes says he could hardly believe hiseyes at the size of the crowd.

‘‘To arrive at those grounds and see all ofthe Red, Yellow and Black supporters

braving the weather to support us, reallywas superb.

‘‘It was fantastic to be able to take an ITMCup pre-season fixture out to where rugbybegins — in the local clubs.’’

Gibbes says a huge thank you must go toKeith Parsons and the team at Te AwamutuSports for putting it all together.

‘‘Your support is much appreciated byeveryone at Waikato Rugby.’’

BITING off the hard yards. Waikato halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow (left) and TeAwamutu Sports’ prop Ben May move in to support a hard-working team-mate. Also pictured are Taranaki All Blacks Andrew Hore and Jason Eaton.

From page 14.After the success of

last Wednesday’s matchand last Monday’sschool visits, Gibbessays the Waikato RugbyUnion will certainly belooking to take more oftheir events out to thelocal clubs within theregion.

The coaching staffwere understandablystoked with the effort ofthe Waikato team.

‘‘To go from a toughloss to Auckland on Sat-urday night to a veryphysical, hard-foughtwin against Taranakifour days later showsthat we have what ittakes to handle the shortturn around this season, and the ability to field acompetitive team week

in, week out,’’ saysGibbes.

Stand outs for Wai-kato were former AllBlack openside flankerMarty Holah, in his firstgame since May for theOspreys in Wales, destructive No. 8 AlexBradley who scored abrace of tries, New Zea-land Sevens stars DeclanO’Donnell and FrankHalai in the three-quarters, and the secondhalf replacement pairingof halfback TaweraKerr-Barlow andStephen Donald.

Skipper Whiteanchored a Waikatoscrum that often hadTaranaki’s pack back-pedalling, while his TeAwamutu Sports club-mate Chris Middleton

impressed locking thescrum, in the first half, with former Te Awa-mutu Gwynne Shieldrep Toby Lynn. Boththese locks workedtirelessly at set pieceand in general play.

Gibbes made changesto the pack at halftimewithout losing anymomentum.

The coach warns thatTaranaki will betougher when the twoteams meet in roundtwo, having spent littletime working on theirscrum to date. Followingthe game here, Waikatohad another big week oftraining in preparationfor their round one ITMCup game against South-land in Invercargill onFriday.
